2:05 AM
Huh, MS renamed LTSB to LTSC
> No support for the modern Edge browser
No support for Cortana
No support for Windows Store
lmao I see all of these as positives

2:59 AM
lol

SO, random question
Say you have a config file that's self documented.
(so each block says what it does, and comments out the bits you don't need)
Do y'all just keep the bits you need, or the whole thing 'in case'?

depends on my own self estimated level of expertise with the tool and the general complexity of the tool
if I'm generally an 8/10 or better with the tool, I just rip that stuff out

oops
I'm not on Matrix

Built a second router - apparently the tools in armbian for setting up wifi nuke your dnsmasq config (booo!)

3:06 AM
and if the tool is really complicated I might leave the comments in even if I know it really well.

I can do it from scratch but I figured I'd just do it minimal
Oh, there's comments all right
#For god's sake, the naming on this interface is a pain. I'll just shove it into br0 so I don't need to write it out
ya, that makes sense

Bob
3:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek I keep the whole thing.
Preferably, I include a new config that overrides parts of the default.
I'd rather not modify the default directly.

ah, yeah, that's a thing

Bob
That's partially for my own sanity so I don't have to merge too much crap when the default is updated.

In theory I back up the default and last known good config

Bob
Partially so I know what exactly has changed.

except when an easy to use tool nukes all of it by accident cough

4 hours later…
7:38 AM
Someone I know is keeping a husky in Delhi
Holy crap that's so cruel
It's ~45°C here nowadays
Wtf man
And it's a pup! They need lots of exercises!
"no but I keep the AC on all day so it should be fine"
Ugh I'm so mad
So I'm doing research, and most sources claim that huskies can adjust to warm temps
But in Delhi it's extremely hot for more than 6 months a year
Winters is about three months most years
I still don't think this is healthy for huskies

8:00 AM
@rahuldottech Done. Not really sure what else to say though ha

@rahuldottech keeping humans in that heat is cruel!

@rahuldottech huskies have double coats
they actually do a good job at thermal regulation unless you cut their fur
NEVER SHAVE A DOUBLE COATED DOG

8:15 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah but still. 45C for over half the year seems cruel
@Burgi as someone who just has to go across town at peak temps in five minutes
I AGREE

do they have air conditioning?
Do they carry water?
(actually I don't, but I used to)

i think india is a bit like europe and the US in the late 80s or early 90s. "oh we can just spend our way out of any problems"

@Burgi or any newly rich state

that is a fair assesment

Apparently IT firms in Chennai are having work from home... cause of water shortages...

8:28 AM
isn't that the place that got wiped out by the typhoon?

not wiped out, but pretty bad
but its a state capital/major city

they must be suffering with collapsed infrastructure

that assumes it was good to start with

9:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek Most of my config files should be git-backed up by etckeeper
so there should be 'known good' revisions kept
I haven't gone so far as to test that theory though
(yes yes, untested backups and whatnot)

@bertieb maybe these are fresh builda
Builds

Well, you shouldn't need to keep any old revisions
in that case
because the old revision is surely the default?

Yup. But there's always a default config file

9:48 AM
Welp
Circle Pay is going away
(cc @djsmiley2k, if that's how you get your Prolific payments)
> Why is this happening?

Circle believes that the future of finance will be built on open blockchain technology and that global payments will become reality through fiat tokens and stablecoins such as US Dollar Coin (USDC).
Uh-huh
"We think the future is blockchain, so we're shutting down our useful service next month"

yeah
lol

Something doesn't quite add up there

i think pressure from traditional banking services may have something to add to this.

Maybe "We realised how easy it is to launder money through our app and wanted to shut it down before we had the NCA knocking at our door"
Yea
Could be
Oh well
That's me cached out
errrr
cashed xD
I guess I should blame caching

10:10 AM
:/

Hey, it's beer money?
if you cash out

aye
i mean I can do the 'to bank' transfer, not a problem
/me wibbles

Ah okay
How's the rain been down there, btw?

Constant, but not amazingly heavy.
it has rained tho for like 3 days now.
few more and I'll build a boat.

Heh :P

10:15 AM
its almost sunny here

we too have - touch wood - been pretty much spared the monsoon
cue "it's not raining in Scotland?" incredulity ;-P
It's true
Heather is wilting, thistles are drooping
Hordes of confused folk roam aimlessly, hoping for a portion of haggis made scarce by the drought
It's a fact little-known outside of zoology circles; but in times of low rainfall, the wild haggis burrows deep underground to access moisture from natural aquifers

sounds about right
are there calls to the police about a weird yellow glowing thing in the sky?

Heh
There would be
But thankfully it's super cloudy
So no mass panic and seeking shelter from the great unknown
yet.

Ave
10:33 AM
hey root access

Is it just me or does Paddy McGuinness look like Ricky Gervais if he'd been in the SAS?

Ave
what's the best way to graphically connect to a windows machine in same network, from linux?

Hey Ave

Ave
vnc? rdp? something else?

reminina?
(±spelling)

Ave
10:34 AM
remmina is just a client for many protocols
I'm asking which protocol to use
my usecase is video editing fwiw

Oh, right
I dunno, I've only ever used it to RDP to uni virtual desktop dealie

Ave
I have a windows pc for IDA and vegas pro alone, I'd rather not use it directly but remote in

And averse to using a physical KVM?

Ave
it's a laptop and I'll connect to it from a laptop

My experience with remote graphical stuff isn't that up to date, but I've found VNC slow in the past, and folks seem to rate RDP enough

10:50 AM
"Aw what a sweet dog. What's his name?"
"Karma. And she isn't a dog. Karma is a bitch."

RDP is the way to go

@ave iirc, there's a client for Windows RDP for GNU/Linux.

i just use good ol' mstsc

works here

11:46 AM
Hmm
Anyone here used a speed wrench?
Oh fudge
my washing machine sounds like it just exploded
brb
False alarm
I hope

big clunk sound @bertieb?
@rahuldottech theres a few

@djsmiley2k Kinda yeah
CRASH, CLUNK

12:04 PM
drum falling off the axis.
next comes the grinding sounds as it slowly dismantles itself while running.,
At least that's my uneducated (but experienced) guess

Hmm
I don't know if past-me activated the 10 year warranty
What a fool I am if I didn't...

how old is it?

12:23 PM
I feel really good today
I was able to help someone out
Feels good

12:43 PM
@bertieb so just like my mic…?

@JourneymanGeek Your mic exploded?!
I was so surprised, I apparently hit F11 and went full screen
I mean, the keys are right next to each other

@bertieb no . Just sounds like your washing machine
Ask @Bob

1:01 PM
Oh, right
Perhaps a different mic is in order? ;-P
Unless, of course, the crash and clunk sounds are intentional...

naw
actually haven't used it in ages

@djsmiley2k usually either 9 years, 11 months and 29 days or 10 years and 1 day

though presumably with BL3 and Wolfenstein young blood coming, I might do co op if I can find the time ;)

neither of those looked that interesting

they kinda scratch an itch for me. I loved the first 3 BL games, and apparently its more of the same
and I really like the wolfenstein reboot

1:20 PM
@djsmiley2k About 4 ish years?
Maybe slightly less

oh, then not like they can claim it's standard wear and tear

1:47 PM
So mine.... I guess it was in some kind of U shape, holding the axle for the drum
One day.... it jumped out, but managed to keep running
and it ran and ran and ran
but slowly it was grinding away all the other plastic bits inside D:

Bob
2:22 PM
@JourneymanGeek FYI your homeserver's still stuffed

My DNS is still stuffed
I have no clue how to fix that
sort of i donno.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek disable DNSSEC
ask namecheap support
but yea your entire domain is still screwed

disabled already

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's not disabled
Go poke namecheap support
we're well past the TTL and the DS record is still there
@JourneymanGeek did you even have it on in the first place?

2:39 PM
Yes

Bob
:\

rofl
See riot.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Unreliable right now.

I've sent the l1 the dnssec results from their own recommended page

Bob
Better to talk here or steam.
At least until you get your DNS issue sorted.

2:41 PM
@Bob they requested 6-8 minutes to check

Pretty standard for NC support

Bob
@JourneymanGeek if they need more evidence ask them to nslookup/dig against 8.8.8.8

posted that already
@Bob 6-8 is magic
@Bob got a higher level support guy now

@JourneymanGeek Just wait till you have to fight the Tech Support Boss

@bertieb I think I just shibboleeted

2:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ah, that's handy 👍

3:12 PM
hello, is this the right place If I wanna ask about what is wrong with my fresh EC2 instance

@HristoHristov we tend to prefer people use the sites for questions - you're free to complain though

@JourneymanGeek they must recognise you

3:27 PM
> A thin slice of yellow plastic with a prominent black strip
mine was paper
or rather, thin card

@JourneymanGeek I would ask there, although it's more of a discussion question. I'm not sure if it's gonna get flagged

@HristoHristov well, the norms on 'asking questions' here are a bit strange
But well, I'll bite, what's going on?

3:42 PM
Ah I just got some urgent work. Never mind me, I will try with this issue some other time

3:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek Draco lives in NY, not me. Interesting read tho
I've been to NYC 2 or 3 times (3, I think) but never rode their subway system

@allquixotic its grim
i prefer the london underground and that is pretty squalid

4:40 PM

1 hour later…
5:45 PM
Ow ow ow
I got my braces tightened today. And now I'm in paiiiiijn
My dinner is probably going to consist solely of ice cream
Which is also something that helps with emotional pain, heh.

6:32 PM
I imagine NY underground is like in the game 'The Darkness'

you've played GTA4? its like that
if the graphic engine in cyberpunk 2077 is as good as they showed in the E3 trailers it'll be the new yardstick

7:02 PM
> Hello,
End of the Google Pay P2P service
We are announcing the end of Google Pay P2P, our peer-to-peer (P2P) payments service, in the United Kingdom. Starting from 6 September 2019, you'll no longer be able to send and request money through Google Pay's P2P service in Gmail or on pay.google.com.
@bertieb I'm thinking a law has changed?

7:12 PM
I wish I could put my Visa on Google Pay, and not carry my wallet as often...
But my bank doesn't allow it

7:46 PM
ow ow ow
my teeeeth

8:10 PM

Q: Emailed Excel workbook appears broken after being attached

Canadian LukeI have worked a bit with an email attachment issue, and can now send attachments through email, through a script. When the email comes in, I double-click the attachment, and Excel 2016 opens, with a dialog reading: We found a problem with some content in 'attachment.xlsx'. Do you want use to try...

8:46 PM
You appear to be cursed.

i have that issue emailing excel spreadsheets to OSX users

That sucks. I want to automate sending that document
/disable "clippy.exe" /force

eh wtf
why is my eth0 interface down on my ubuntu vm

Don't know, you didn't give me access to it yet

:D
heh they offer gentoo iso's now
> About these ISO images
Gentoo & Gentoo based distributions.

These are currently unsupported as we have no one on staff that is a masochist.

9:25 PM
So anyone else had their buyvm vm been randomly restarted and had no networking?
eth0 and eth1 are down :/

9:54 PM
wow friday night is a terrible time to ask for help eh :D

mila kunis is hot

10:21 PM
@djsmiley2k I'm with el cheapo Contabo

Anyone looking for a mic?
Decent deal on that one, at the moment.
@djsmiley2k I think you were?

@MichaelFrank Funnily enough
After discovering my XLR cable/connector wasn't fu... fudgy
I'm not surplus one XLR cable
trying to figure out if I can somehow justify a second mic
what I'd use it for
etc
Oh, it's 3.5mm
Boo-urns

11:22 PM
@allquixotic naw. OS/2 lives!

I failed to show up to class one time and this is the true story I told my teacher.

I was in my electronics lab and the power supply kept making this horrible buzzing/grinding sound. I'd smack it and it'd shut up for awhile before doing it again. Now, you're thinking this was my alarm clock and I was dreaming about being in the lab. And you're quite right. The thing is, in this dream I was a gigantic grape with arms and legs and a face. So once I realized that it WAS my alarm clock and I needed to get to class I was still enough in the dream to think I was still a grape. And fruit doesn't

11:36 PM
@Bob nc escalated it further up
