@MichaelFrank Doesn't VNC or such work, albeit with some finagling?

12:30 AM
Odd... it's not downloading 1809.
I'll give it some time.

@bertieb if you need to finagle, it's not really proper lol

Yea true :P

12:56 AM
So far, so good. Build quality is excellent; there's next to no flex and very few devices I've worked with have such solidly-made power or volume buttons.
Alrighty, let's install core apps. Firefox and Adobe Reader come first.
A few drivers will be needed; these will come later.

1:27 AM
sigh
Forgot how to configure Firefox Sync to use a custom server.

1:39 AM
Figured it out. Syncing...

2:22 AM
Alright, got everything synced up in Firefox and all my add-ons set up. Installing the rest of my usual utilities.
I'll probably do printer drivers next.
Biggest drawback is a lack of ports (only the Surface Connector, a single USB Type-C port, and a headphone jack), but that's not a serious problem for what I'm using this thing for.
CrystalDiskInfo (to monitor the disk), BatteryInfoView, 7-Zip.

2:41 AM
Huh. Performance is actually better than expected. Certainly not as fast as Ryzen-powered laptop, and it does lag a bit under load, but it doesn't really lock up for any extended period of time.

3:07 AM
One last thing... let's install Cinebench R20 and see how the Surface Go performs.

3:23 AM
...338 multicore, uncooled. Let's do this with the device actively cooled.

3:56 AM
356 cooled. I guess there's just not much throttling happening on a pure CPU load...

4:17 AM
@bwDraco which surface did you get?

@rahuldottech Surface Go, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD.
It bears the name Furcas and will be my go-to device for content consumption and basic productivity. My laptop will still be used for heavier tasks.
It's surprisingly capable given the slower Pentium processor.

4:49 AM
Ah. Have fun.

I'm reusing much of my existing peripherals for it, including a Hexgears X-1 mechanical keyboard. I may get a Type Cover for it later on.

So guys... my old Lenovo netbook is quickly becoming inadequate due to a combination of low memory and a slow processor. I've been looking at the Surface Go, but the Pentium Gold processor inside isn't vastly better than the Celeron N3350 in Bifrons and there aren't a huge number of options that are as good (from a build quality, portability, and value perspective) as the Surface Go. I want it to be a convenient third device that is simple, light, and inexpensive.

Hm. Do you guys find these claims credible? news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20060106

^ Start here, @rahuldottech

@bwDraco okok

5:13 AM
And as I read the Times, it's pretty clear this is just the right size. The biggest compromises are performance and battery life but neither are severe limitations and the processor is fast enough to make web browsing a pleasant experience, even if it can't load dozens of tabs at once.
Don't get the 4/64 model, though. The memory is a serious limiting factor on the unit I tested at the store.
The $399 price tag may seem alluring but it will perform much worse than the 8/128 model.

Another website using the shitty inconsolata font
@MichaelFrank @JourneymanGeek

Of note is that I've had a Wacom Bamboo Ink active stylus for a while but it saw next to no use on my main laptop. It should get more use on this tablet.

@rahuldottech yep. Absolutely possible.

Hmm
@bwDraco it's for the fools
Or rich persons with very light workloads

yesterday, by allquixotic
if I was Emperor of the Internet, everyone would have a symmetrical gigabit pipe, the IPv4 Internet would be set to turn itself off in five years starting today (with no way to stop it or delay it once the timer is set), all digital electronic devices manufactured by any semiconductor company would refuse to function in any capacity when located inside a country without explicit Net Neutrality safeguards codified into law, and it would be a criminal offense to file spurious DMCA takedowns
Where can I vote for @allquixotic for Emperor?

3:54 PM
Well... the more I use this tablet, the more it's growing on me. It's bloody evident that this is exactly what I needed to make reading the Times enjoyable again.
Microsoft nailed it.

hi, anyone familiar with ubuntu? i got a problem superuser.com/questions/1443804/…
could not install ubuntu in a windows 7 lenovo t460p laptop

4:49 PM
@athos This is not the place to spam your questions. Everybody in this room already reads the main site ...

5:06 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Hey, TBG's back! :D

I have never had a corndog.
@ThatBrazilianGuy hiya! How've you been?

Hmm. So the Surface Go has a battery that is internally specced at 26.1 Wh. Mine's at 27.1 Wh (104% of design capacity) out of the box.
Most new devices have batteries that start marginally over spec (they rate it a bit conservatively to account for sample variation), so this is not unexpected. My laptop was like this, too; IIRC it started at 102% of spec and is now down to about 96%.

1 hour later…
6:29 PM
...hmm. The memory is LPDDR3-1866. Windows reports the form factor as a "row of chips", i.e. soldered.
As for real-world battery life, Firefox is still not great, but I think it's gotten better in version 67.

6:47 PM
Yey @ThatBrazilianGuy is back

7:22 PM
one question:v why not?

7:52 PM
Hmm. The Surface Go 8/128 uses a Toshiba BG3 BGA NVMe SSD. The retail Toshiba RC100 drive is based on this BGA part and therefore uses the much shorter than usual M.2 type 2242 form factor. (Most M.2 SSDs sold at retail are type 2280).
The 120 GB RC100 has a warranted endurance of 60 TBW.
(fundamentally, this means that the RC100 is a single-chip SSD, only that it's packaged in M.2 for consumer installation)
This 60 TBW rating is therefore a good indication of what to expect on this tablet's storage.

@Nick Why not what exactly?
@bwDraco the fact no ones talking to you about any of this, indicates people probably don't really care.
not saying it's disruptive or any of that crap, simply people don't care.
This kind of.... dissection of a machine, is the perfect thing on a review site or a blog, not a chatroom.
