11:04
@Bob Photos !! Love to see how that happens
Bob
Bob
11:17
@HackToHell There's a PSU blocking one side and a large metal frame/plate blocking the other. I can just barely see it, it feels like it's upright, and the diagram indicates a slot shaped.. connector.. it appears to be Slot 1 though.
I knew the PII used a slot, but never knew that about PIII :\
@Bob My PIII did not have Slot I
I had Socket 370 iirc
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell I probably have an older one here then
According to Wikipedia, the Katmai (0.25 µm) PIIIs used Slot 1
Those were the first, the ones following (Coppermine (0.18 µm) and later) used 370 :\
lol
mine's a slot 1 as well
@Bob: sounds a LOT like the one i had
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek IBM 6564 S7A?
viglen of some sort
was from a british university
I'm trying to see if i have specs of it anywhere
but ya, large passive heatsink
Bob
Bob
11:26
@JourneymanGeek Large? This heatsink looks rather inadequate..
Though considering it's a PIII, I have no idea what's adequate :P
Bob
Bob
I'm gonna go dig for the manual
lol
uploading pix now, yanked it out of the old girl
Bob
Bob
Hmm.. I remember seeing the manual somewhere, but can't find it now. Typical.
Did come across 3-4 driver CDs
Bob
Bob
11:33
Along with a floppy containing CD-ROM drivers xD
its a lot larger than early series PIVs even
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's a nice large heatsink
ya, built like a shit brickhouse ;p
also
Most of the systems i build have a motherboard diagram inside the case
its the way it should be done ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek This is the first I've seen in years
It saves so much time if you actually intend to work on the system at all ;p
Bob
Bob
11:37
Here it is
I don't know if I should bother taking the PSU out, the CPU is blocked by it
that looks the same as mine
Bob
Bob
That photo shows more than I can actually see :P
what kinda PSU? A standard ATX one?
Bob
Bob
HIPRO
HP-M1454A3
not the brand ;p
Bob
Bob
11:39
lol
the size/form factor
Bob
Bob
Define standard ATX?
So, how am i supposed to map multiple domains with a single ip, i guess you have to use cname but how ?
intel did that already
;p
Bob
Bob
If you're talking about how it's mounted, it's nothing like any other computer here.
11:39
@HackToHell: virtualhosts on your web server
ahh
then unlikely ATX
@JourneymanGeek That's it? Awesome
and that case looks really cramped
@HackToHell: along with regular records
I don't bother with Cnames
Bob
Bob
imgur's timing out :\
@JourneymanGeek Meaning DNS mappings from domain name registars
its been having issues lately
@HackToHell: depends on what you can to do
Bob
Bob
11:43
I'm not convinced it's not the uploading app on my phone
@Bob: its probably imgur
been having issues with them all day
Bob
Bob
That thing in the middle is the PSU
Bob
Bob
The CPU is under it
Its ATX under a wierd thing i think ;p
cute
Bob
Bob
11:44
With about 3cm separating them
That causes overheating I suppose
they're using the PSU to blow air right into the heat sink
Bob
Bob
Seems like it
And it has a VIA chip ;)
or suck it out
oh, those are common
Bob
Bob
11:45
If it is ATX, it's too narrow to fit in my mid-ATX tower
thats the wierdest config i have ever seen
Bob
Bob
lol
Bob
Bob
O.O
as is that
Bob
Bob
11:46
I can't find the HDD
o0
is it... not there?
i see a unconnected IDE cable on the photo
Bob
Bob
Heck, I can't even find where the HDD is supposed to be
There's a lot of unconnected IDE cabled
It's a tangled mess (yes, ribbon cables can tangle)
not all of them may be IDE
there may be random header cables
or scsi, if you're so illfated ;p
also, pretty small board, mine has ISA slots as well
11:49
Does is have an ethernet card as well ?
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Yes
last PCI slot
newer ethernet card tho
Mine did not,had to suck it up using usb
Bob
Bob
middle here :\
11:50
(half sized, the older ones actually had a large processor for it)
Bob
Bob
I also have two or three spare PCI ethernet cards somewhere
lol
I think so do i
no use tho, everything has it built in now
Bob
Bob
Hm.. I wonder if I can use this as a fancy router, so I can finally fix the triple-NAT going on on my network.
Damn google dns sucks, it takes them forever to update their dns records
11:51
some cisco routers were pentium IIIs
Bob
Bob
Aha! I found an old HDD mounted on a sliding thing.. looks like it would fit in this case
That would be why I couldn't find a HDD mount, this looks.. different
And again PHOTO ! (Weird computers are awesome)
lol
I'm getting reminded of the original random hungarian
(there's a bunch of hungarians on G+, all of them are friends of an online friend. They have their own circle called 'random hungarians)
Bob
Bob
ooh
Maxtor HDD, 13.5GB
lol
thats small
Bob
Bob
11:54
it's got IBM labels on it, it's probably right
but sounds about right for that era
Bob
Bob
Made in Singapore ;)
lol
maxtor had a factory here
(actually so did seagate, and hitachi, and some company called hoya)
Bob
Bob
Hmm.. Maxtor and Seagate merged at some point
lol
we're down to three hard drive companies.. possibly 4, if simmtronics isn't someone's idea of a joke ;p
Bob
Bob
11:56
There's a little speaker in the front too :P
dude
the speaker is AWESOME
Bob
Bob
I wonder why they leave those out now
save costs i presume
thats the problem with modern computers
Bob
Bob
lol
Would have been negligible :\
I used to be able to tell if my connection was proper based off modem noises ;p
Bob
Bob
11:58
That's where I think the HDD goes
Now I just have to figure out how to insert it
ahh
it uses a caddy
Bob
Bob
I can't plug it in now :P
I don't think I've ever worked on a computer this cramped
god, that's the most crammed standard case i have ever seen
lol
I have worked on something worse
mini ITX + Pata...
but if you were going to, opening up everything and neatening it up sounds good
(and a quick prayer to $deity)
Bob
Bob
Just seeing photos of a mini ITX board scares me
the motherbard diagram shows ights for alert on LAN and wake on LAN o.O
huuh, a rocker switch?
One is labelled floppy write protect, clear CMOS, N/A and N/A. The other is not labelled, but has 8 switches. I wonder what that could be for..
Hey, this thing actually has a CD audio player in it! :D
Of course, the CD audio header is on the corner opposite the CD drive..
You wanna suggest Chrome for him? :D
12:15
Wait Xbox is a short form for DirectX box Oh ms ....

2 hours later…
13:56
@Bob: actually, he can use firefox with vnc
14:24
@Bob: mini itx boards arn't bad
some of the cases are horrifying
14:36
@JourneymanGeek Were on a shopping spree on Memorial Day?
newp
why would i be?
@JourneymanGeek Because it happens once a year. Discounts and all stuff... non-USA people use this as opportunity to import stuff from USA.
oh, naw
I hardly buy stuff from the US, unless i can't get it here or i don't want to wait
@JourneymanGeek You are not USA'er?
obviously not ;p
14:39
@JourneymanGeek Where are you?
singapore
@JourneymanGeek Maybe you told me this once. I don't remember.
@JourneymanGeek And I was on a killing spree (Unreal Tournament).
i was about to ask what game ;p
@JourneymanGeek I thought you would think in real life I perform killing spree. At least not yet without 200000mW wireless adapter.
only if you drop it on people's head
14:41
@JourneymanGeek And if 200000Watt? I won't need to drop?
@JourneymanGeek How about 200000MegaWatt? = Chuck Norris Kick!
@JourneymanGeek Do you read a lot non-digital books? This gadget seems nice:

http://www.focalprice.com/HJ215B/Eye_Protective_Portable_LED_Reading_Book_Light_Black.html
lol
I read dead trees, yes
@JourneymanGeek Why dead trees?
Ever heard about this innovative thing? I don't understand why would one need it if laptop can be used, smartphone with HDMI, DVD player etc.

http://dx.com/p/1080p-full-hd-android-2-3-network-media-player-w-2-x-usb-sd-hdmi-lan-optical-cvbs-audio-r-l-101829
14:57
cheaper i presume
heck, i wouldn't mind one of those if it was a little cheaper
@JourneymanGeek You are about TV Android gadget?
actually dosen't need to be, but i'd like a more grown up OS as an option
lol
I like hacking things
Wonder if this will improve my killing spree...

http://dx.com/p/stainless-steel-kitchen-knife-18-3cm-blade-103998
All these can't be knockoffs!

http://dx.com/c/consumer-electronics-199/memory-cards-111/sd-card-118
the reviews look horrible for the android box
they might be
ever heard of Bunny Huang?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I can imagine
15:02
@Sathya or @Studiohack - are you around
@Bob: If you went for a all in one board with sata (like the atom or hudsons) they're actually not too bad
techreport.com/discussions.x/22990 this case dosen't look too scary
even swallows up a standard PSU
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That looks quite comfortably sized, but a fair bit bigger than I was expecting of mini-ITX :P
lol
both my mini itx cases are the standard shuttle style ones
i've seen smaller, and bigger tho
or you could (for whatever reason) do a mini itx build in a matx or atx style case
Bob
Bob
I'm still trying to get that old computer to start. Finally found a VGA cable, got a keyboard and a live CD, but I can't figure out how to get this thing to boot off the CD
hmm
is the cd drive functional?
Bob
Bob
15:07
I hope I'm not going to need that old Win98 startup floppy I found xD
Bob
Bob
No idea :D
pIIIs should be cd bootable
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'll probably play around more tomorrow
I just hope the heatsink isn't too dusty, it's too cramped to clean without removing the PSU first
Don't particularly want to fry the CPU so soon
15:25
lol
ya
15:37
ack

Q: Hard drive shows as empty but still uses hundreds of GB

BlanktextI have a 1 TB hard drive. When I connect the hard drive and access it, I see that it is empty. But there is 686 GB space used and 244 GB free space (as it was before).

er
he posted "thank you, problem solved" without actually giving any details on how it was solved
Bob
Bob
Or worse, one finds a forum where the exact same question is asked, and then followed up by a post that merely says "found the answer, thanks" — Ether Sep 10 '09 at 19:19
it's a medical miracle.
Bob
Bob
Cool, chat inserts comments as quotes? :D
15:59
here @WilliamHilsum
it's cool - someone from gaming.se is helping me out! Only the usual! :)
@WilliamHilsum cheers then :)
sorry, hope it didn't alert you specially :/ I always feel guilty when I do this!
@WilliamHilsum no, no worries, I enjoy helping!

1 hour later…
17:33
Home \o/
What a week
17:55
just got two zune 30's in the mail and a z30 mobo
18:15

18:50
Who shaves here? Who uses Gillette brand?

1 hour later…
20:13
@Borisyo I do
20:39
@Luke Do you use Gillette manual shaver?
20:57
@Borisyo I use the 3 blade one, with the AAA battery to vibrate the blade

2 hours later…
