welp. I've almost forgotten what it's like to use an Android tablet. (Just updated my Nexus 9.)
The low memory is whst really holds this thing back. NVIDIA's Denver core in the Tegra K1 is internally a 7-wide VLIW design with Transmeta code-morphing technology so it's a really odd beast.
Code morphing did see a revival in the NVIDIA Denver core first used in the HTC Google Nexus 9 tablet (whose Tegra K1 SoC has two Denver cores). Internally, it's 7-wide in-order VLIW. NVIDIA calls the code-morphing technology "dynamic code optimization". It basically translates and optimizes ARMv8-A code at runtime for the underlying core and caches the result in a dedicated block of memory. Under ideal conditions (e.g. repetitive, predictable code), it performs almost like desktop Haswell; in less-than-ideal conditions, it may not be much faster than Cortex-A53. — bwDraco Mar 23 '17 at 13:51
I own a Nexus 9 and use it quite extensively; in most lighter single-threaded tasks, it performs quite well, but it suffers from poor performance when asked to do lots of things at once. Having only two cores and not liking unpredictable code (where the optimized versions are not yet cached and need to be compiled first or don't fit entirely in the 128 MB cache) noticeably hurts complex workload performance. The processor internally has a ARM decoder as a fallback for code that isn't translated and optimized yet but it's very, very slow. High clock speeds (2.3 GHz) somewhat make up for it. — bwDraco Mar 23 '17 at 13:55
FWIW the Nexus 9 was the world's first Armv8-A Android device...
...and that goes to show how old it is.
I kinda want to get the new Galaxy Tab S4...
@rahuldottech I would rather make myself a mug of Death Wish Coffee.

anyone come across this in logical comparisons?
> When doing logical comparisons involving variables, always put the variable on the right side and put constants, literals, or function calls on the left side.

it's a coding convention, for some languages
I believe it's so if you typo the comparison, you don't overwrite the constant...

@Burgi It makes sense, it's what I always do.
Wait no
It's the opposite of what I walways do

if ( true == $the_force ) {
    $victorious = you_will( $be );
}

I always do ($var == val)

$x == 4;  // Returns true

$x = 4; // Whoops, $x is now 4, returns true.

8:59 AM
@Burgi ew. That looks wrong. Just. Ugh.

@rahuldottech see why.
It looks wrong because you've learnt to do it the other way (as have we all)

> if you omit an equals sign (admit it, it happens even to the most seasoned of us), you’ll get a parse error, because you can’t assign to a constant like true. If the statement were the other way around ( $the_force = true ), the assignment would be perfectly valid, returning 1, causing the if statement to evaluate to true, and you could be chasing that bug for a while.

Maybe languages should just insist on having it the other way around, and we'd accept that fact.

And like
Logically it makes sense
You're checking if the value of a variable makes sense. So obviously it should come first

The reasoning behind doing it the other way, makes sense too
as I've pointed out.

eh, C compilers (and C#) will at least warn you

@rahuldottech use a switch for this example

Bob
If you really want an assignment in a condition you need to double parenthesise itit

@Burgi I only use switches if there's the need for more than one else if

Bob
9:04 AM
if (foo = 1) <== warning/error

@djsmiley2k The code would still be broken
Even if it runs, It will exhibit unexpected behavior

Bob

@Bob interesting, that's good.

> This applies to ==, !=, ===, and !==. Yoda conditions for <, >, <= or >= are significantly more difficult to read and are best avoided.

Just. Let it be.

@Seth Rahul is one of the few people to dislike PHP
:-P

@betrieb I know a lot of people do. I still don't really get why. I still haven't been able to understand why the language is bad (though I do realize and acknowledge it does have a few things that are odd). More often I'm getting the impression that people are sick of "bad" php programmers - of which there are a lot because it has a low barrier of entry in comparison to most other languages.

It's been a while since I used PHP, but there are flaws as well as bad programmers :)

@Burgi I don't work for a "company" in the traditional sense, and even then I find random packages of branded crap from over the decades

@Bob while languages like Python do have a rather low barrier of entry (though indenting by white space is ... interesting in itself) the thing PHP grew with is free webspace availability. There were and probably are no free/few webhosts that offer python compatibility.
It's not that I disagree that there is a lot of horrible PHP code and that PHP has some rather "interesting" properties that also invite you to write bad code. It's just that I think that for a lot of applications PHP is a sufficient tool especially if it comes to web design.
