12:00 AM
@rahuldottech watching.
I'm genuinely worried about how you managed to reach a vlogbrothers video from 25 Oct 2013.
Anyhow, it's a good topic. A thousand thousand seconds.

yeah ok I'm not sleeping tonight
2

12:17 AM
(Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana via Steam In-Home Streaming)

@rahuldottech I haven't slept either. I neither finished nor even started the work I postponed sleep for.
C'est la vie.
A million seconds is 277.78 hours. That's 11 and half days.
Let's revist that time shall we: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118/2018/9/4
So, tom scott was live with nerdcubed...
^this is probably the video @Burgi mentioned
Also, @JourneymanGeek got a bath that day.
No record of that since.

12:34 AM
._.
Cause my bathing habits are on a need to know basis...

can you run a linux command from a windows host using virtualbox?
I recall a guide doing it the other way but not this way

Dog
Err you can run a Linux command from a Windows host using Windows...
The other way is actually harder since Windows doesn't have a native remote shell.
@bertieb That's what SHE said!
Right before calling the police

12:52 AM
@William unclear what you're asking. Accidentally triggered global thermonuclear war.

lol
yes I believe you undestood me correctly
okay interesting
@Dog do you mind sharing the command?
guest control looks correct

Hey friends I need some heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

okay what type of heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

So I have this barebones FreeBSD install running on a Virtualbox VM and a file on it
How do I take it out

fun question I upload stuff like that

12:57 AM
vbox storage is a vmdk file

how large is this file must be pretty large
why don't you just plug in a thumb drive

and drag it over

512 KB why aren't you uploading it to a server somewhere?

12:58 AM
All it's got is a FreeBSD CLI prompt

do you have mount?
surely you have mount?
umount/mount

I just found out I killed the network somehow.

save the machine stat

I do, but vbox is ignoring my USB devices. =/

state
okay well obviously had copy it out

12:59 AM
Can't save state, 2.6 Gb free on the host :'(

serial might work but you need packages to send data over serial
no network? no usb? uhh

1 min ago, by That Brazilian Guy
I just found out I killed the network somehow.
I think I'll nuke and restart
It's a NIC driver I compiled for pfSense

yeah if you are doing that I am probably no help
my understanding is more elementary

Best bet might be install ssh server and scp the file
I have nearly nil FreeBSD knowledge
I'm going blind here

well if you have network access the sky is the limit
with out that yeah I have no idea
I mean encode it using audio beeps maybe

1:02 AM
I'll nuke and restart and then I might have network access in 15 or 30 min
!!xkcd 349

Currently at stage 2, I think

copy and paste the virtual machine
if you can
and then you shouldn't progress to stage 3

@ThatBrazilianGuy this is why I'm plotting to build my home router on linux ._.

If I had money and an easily available compatible hardware I'd try DD-WRT or a similar.
But playing driver lottery is really, really annoying.
And the very cause that led me down this path
Turns out this issue I've been having for months of significantly slower internet over PPPoE might be caused by a freeBSD realtek driver.
I have compiled the latest driver
BUT IT IS LOCKED IN LIMBO RIGHT NOW

1:08 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy oh - from scratch ;)
@ThatBrazilianGuy realtek sucks in any OS

Hm. What if... What if I create a FAT32 vbox storage, attach it to the VM, mount it, copy the file there, then mount it on the host?

I get enough headache from getting ubuntu to work
don't you have another computer where the usb ports work with Vb?

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy You're running a router on vanilla BSD?

@Dog No, I have a pfSense box with possibly outdated realtek drivers.

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy My student days were the ones during which I travelled the most

1:12 AM
And a barebones FreeBSD VM where I compiled latest realtek drivers.

Dog
@ThatBrazilianGuy Oh, pfSense is nice, but quite hard work

And then killed the network somehow.

Dog
Can you not just..... kill off the Realtek?

And can't mount a USB drive on vbox
@Dog just what?

funny question what is the most powerful raspberry pi sized device that you guys might reccomend?

Dog
1:13 AM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Get rid of the Realtek thing that you're trying to scrounge drivers for
@William Ironically, a smartphone

so like a google pixel running Ubuntu?

Dog
Fck, that reminds me I need to renew my domain

I would ideally want it capable of running ubunt server

Dog
Heck there's phones that run Ubuntu out of the box

@Dog Well my pfSense runs off a MiniITX box with dual realtek builtin.
I can remove the NICs but that would require a hammer.

Dog
1:16 AM
Phones are mostly ARM linux though, if you're wanting to run Ubuntu it sounds like you probably aren't wanting to deal with the technicalities of not running x86
@ThatBrazilianGuy ...

@Dog that is correct I would want an x86 device idealluy

Dog
I ran pfSense off a laptop with a built-in not-Realtek NIC.
@William Intel Compute Stick?

@William the raspberry pi sized thing is a bit of a bummer

I can make it larger

Dog
High-end modern smartphones are probably more powerful, but also more expensive.

1:19 AM
honestly I just don't want to lugging around 2 laptops

NUC class machines then

Dog
Eh, you won't get much more than an Atom or at best Core-Y performance but that's enough for most things.

@Dog but aren't most packages arm now a days such that if I get ubuntu running on my phone it should probably run just as well if not bettter?

Dog
Fuck, I don't know the difference between Core-M and Core-Y anymore... ffs drugs have broken my brain.

@Dog better than a raspi

Dog
1:22 AM
!!tell 46741975 facepalm

@Dog something either went over my head or is very suttle

If you want something that's got more ports, there's these chinese industrial PCs with laptop class hardware and 2-4 ports
@William phones are not very flexible platforms
++ IO

Dog
@William I'm a cat
@JourneymanGeek Eh, hardware and connectivity wise they're better than most PCs

@Dog you trade off mobile networking for... er...

Dog
1:24 AM
Software... well uh depends what OS you run

I suppose you can go OTG and hang many many things off USB?
software is basically written per platform
actually that's a very similar issue with many consumer routers

I want a way that I run ubuntu next to windows with my laptop such that suspend and resume work properly
I was thinking of 3d printing a box to put a raspberry pi type computer in tapped to the back of my computer

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Well you get WiFi, NFC, Bluetooth, IR, FM, analogue audio, USB, and HDMI connectivity, as well as touch, hard-button, visual, and audio input and output. It's actually quite versatile.

if its just linux, those slimline atom boxen look like a better bet than the dongle pcs

Dog
1:28 AM
You can use it as a light switch, or even a lighting controller. Or a wireless IP motion sensor, audio recorder, text display, audio alert system, room temperature and humidity sensor, barometer, GPS receiver, motion/orientation sensor, etc.

one of these days I'll switch back to ubuntu
but right now with school I can't

Dog
It's got cameras, ambient light sensors, IR rangefinders, capacitive sensors, magnetic sensors, etc. Quite a lot of useful stuff.

linus on youtube held up a pretty powerful computer the size of a SSD computer
I don't have much faith in my phone
considering how much it crashes

Dog
Old Android phones can be used for anything from a mousetrap trigger to a weather station. Or a drone controller, communications relay, crash detector, electrical meter monitor, and a shit ton of other things. Even a shower temperature controller.

1:34 AM
have you done this?

or in the case of the old galaxy note, a one shot water heater.

becasue I have installed & made minor custom ROMs and they are a pain
can't imagine installing ubuntu on a phone will be any easier

@Dog I have a plan related to this. It's gonna take me a long while to get around to designing and making it, but I think you'll like it.
Details will be disclosed later

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Tbh, try hard enough and you can probably trigger a battery explosion through software on most rooted phones.
@rahuldottech I doubt it, I don't like anything.

Hmm
I need more IRL friends, to drag me out of this spiralling whirlpool of debt, drugs, and depression.
2

make sure they aren't spendthrift, depressed potheads.

1:58 AM
@Dog I think that's the first sensible thing I've seen you say in a very long time
I hope that you'll follow through and get decent friends

Dog
2:28 AM
@rahuldottech Yeah but I gotta establish my own internal worth as a person cat before that can happen, which I'm finding difficult, given my lack of supportive parents, social net or peer group

@Dog YOU CAN DO THE THING!
also cats don't need external validation
I've never heard anyone say "Good Cat!"
oh man
there are extremely loud snoring noises from the other vendor's desk

Dog
Scotland has a fairly good safety net for taking care of it's dejected hoomins but the system doesn't work quite so well for its despondent cats :-(

.... the dude is making noises like he's dying

3:10 AM
hm
I might need to ask a main site question
for some reason since we switched domains my work PC has been switching off the themes service automatically

you mean like uxtheme patcher themes?

no, the standard stuff
Not sure whether its some strange GPO thing or something crashing

Dog
Wonder where @Bob is. Not heard from him for a while.

so I'm probably going to get this ebay.com/itm/…
its only 35 dollars

oh should be fun
they're a bit janky I hear

3:18 AM
yeah on second thought
its only 1GB

well they're cheap cause its an older model and they never sold well

Dog
Huh. Ozzie Vodafone only has "5000+" mobile sites? UK Vodafone has 15,000+ and they suck

but the price kinda makes it interesting

I should probably upgrade to W10 first
and try WSL
yeah terrible idea

heh
my dad runs windows 10 on a core 2 duo with a gig of ram ;)

3:25 AM
I have one specfic app(mathematica) that I know doesn't run on W8 so I have been holding out to upgrade
I'm guessing it won't wrong on W10 also but I am not sure

Bob
@Dog floof

3:47 AM
okay having a weird issue

4:31 AM
@Dog Best of luck. Don't give up. We're all rooting for you.

5:13 AM
Like
Do people not have better things to do with their lives?
oh wait
it was a stupid test
arghh

5:29 AM
@rahuldottech I like how much attitude bots have these days
hey rahul, do you have working knowledge of automatons?

@Nick yes

@rahuldottech In the above automaton, given some binary input, what would be output?
or is that not how automatons work.

automatons push old people down stairs and steal their medicine

@Nick I actually have no idea what this is

I imagine 0000 giving output aaaa here.

5:33 AM
I thought you were talking about robotics and stuff. Which I do have extensive experience with.

@rahuldottech funny thing about audits is... sometimes I think they affect legit users more than roboreviewers

I could be wrong.

@JourneymanGeek How so?

@rahuldottech I personally find them annoying if I want to knuckle down and wipe out the queue
and I'm not a fan of the new "colour" indicators

what colour indicators?

5:37 AM
oh red dot and so on
as opposed to the blue box with numbers

not sure what you're talkin' bout

@rahuldottech oh the current review queue indicator is recent

Bob
5:55 AM
@Nick Sounds right.
FSMs are fun
until you need to deal with concurrency, at which point the best thing to do is cry in the corner while your carefully constructed understanding of the world burns down around you

@Bob there's no out arrow anywhere and I can't think anything returns anything until final state is reached. I'll die if someone asks me to build a circuit for this logic.
So, ok, I'm building a lexer.
It's been on my plate for a month. Tried learning it, many many times. I've actually just forgotten how to do it.

Bob
6:19 AM
@Nick oh wait, there's no output here
a is a state, not an output

Bob
this is for validation/matching

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU TRIED TO DO BUT I SAW IT!

Bob
it'll terminate/accept if you go 0 from b

@JourneymanGeek coo

6:22 AM
@rahuldottech Bot Overflow is thawed now
oops
that was supposed to be an edit

@JourneymanGeek ok. thank you, i guess.

Oh I meanr @rahuldottech

@JourneymanGeek lmao

@JourneymanGeek i didn't see. what was it?

@Nick It's a secret
@JourneymanGeek Shhhh

6:33 AM
Well whatever it was he tried to do

I've opened my first real issue on GH
^someone squatting a subdomain
That's weird. It sends me different places. Now it forwarded to lexiflynn.me
wait, that's where it pints to now

think i'll get some rest
see ya'll

good night
er, afternoon

4 hours later…
10:54 AM
HEY SO
I SLEPT FOR ALMOST FOUR AND A HALF HOURS!?

11:19 AM
@Nick I'm not sure if you understand how github pages work
If the dude's username is Lex-Luthor, the only github domain he can get is Lex-Luthor.github.io
Conversely, if your username is not Lex-Luthor, you can't get the domain, regardless of whether or not a user with that username exists and if they've got the repo.
The only github (sub-)domain you can get is <your-username>.github.io

12:08 PM
That proves my phone is using aptX with my PXC 550 \o/

12:27 PM
@rahuldottech not enough. Go back 2 bed

lol @ "2"

@JourneymanGeek lol

1:04 PM
le sigh
After updating VLC to 3.0.4 on Stolas, I get TDRs trying to play H.264 videos using the default (DirectX) renderer. It works with OpenGL, though.

@tereško linko?

(it's a video on youtube, and yes, they already closed the comments)

Bob
brb

@Bob you will want a beer

2:07 PM
tbh that dosen't sound like very much money

it not the parts that are the main issue (though, the choice of chassis is terrible and PSU is questionable), but the build process

@tereško I see filming from the top is current trend... Kitchen TV programs, fashion etc.

what enraged me the most: why are you putting in the CPU last ?!?

Guy works without anti-static wristwrap?

oh, he put on some type of strap, but never actually grounded it

2:20 PM
@tereško Looks like fashion bracelets.

yeah

I would install CPU before installing motherboard inside.

$2K will just about buy you one of the new NVidia cards, right?
Didn't I hear they're planning to keep the 1080 at it's current MSRP through Christmas
Or somesuch?

Bob
@tereško ...is ... is that "anti-static bracelet" just a random wristband?

:D
that's where I understood that I will need a beer with it
or, well, wine was what I had at home (for emergencies)
it's a damned shame that they closed the comments :(

2:25 PM
@tereško What air flight simulator was that video game?

Arma, I think

Bob
@tereško ...is he just tossing in random words that sound about right (to him)?
that's not how you choose a PCIe slot
oh god
I'm done
PSU short circuit in contact with the case
all of my wat
nope, not watching any more

@Bob you will miss the thermal paste bukake, if you do not watch till the end

Bob
@tereško ...you have my curiosity
I'll skip forward lol
wait. the CPU cooler
jesus. why's that going in first?

:D

2:29 PM
They disabled comments because they cannot deal with arguments?

Bob
get those mittens off the CPU pls
I tried so hard to not touch my CPU at all when installing it lol
don't want skin oils on the contacts, don't want skin oils on the heat spreader
@tereško oh no. oooooooooh no. NO. !!no. WHY

@Bob I think that wont really matter all that much, since his AIO does not have fans

Bob
so he looked at the nice neat pre-applied paste
and decided it wasn't enough?
@tereško lol. found one of the threads on Reddit: "They're even missing one of the thumbscrews from the cooling system, so it's not properly tensioned against the CPU.
"
@tereško the PSU is a HX850, a perfectly good (if rather overkill) one ... installed with the fans facing the wrong way :S

yess

> Lo siento, no hablo inglés.
This is why we need more language education.
We need people to be able to effectively use more than just English.
If we seriously value diversity, we need people to be able to speak other languages.

14 hours ago, by That Brazilian Guy
Hey friends I need some heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

lol

Friends, I still need some heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

> eeeeeeeeeeeeee

So I have this VirtualBox VM with its NIC set as NAT and a 10.x.x.x IP
I need to SSH into it from the host.
How do I set up VirtualBox?

Boy oh boy. I haven't used the VBox shared folders feature in a long time.

2:48 PM
It's quite stupid but I was up until 1 AM and my brain is kinda stalled.
@bwDraco Shared folders need guest addons, which are either Windows or Linux. This guest VM is FreeBSD
14 hours ago, by That Brazilian Guy
So I have this barebones FreeBSD install running on a Virtualbox VM and a file on it
I'll just try "bridge" and see if it works.
YAY IT WORKS
IP in the same subnet, ping, SSH, yay!
But now ssh root@IP asks for a pwd. Root is pwless...
I ran passwd, now root has the really safe pass of root, but ssh rejects it :'(

Hmm... try creating a VHD image and formatting it as FAT32. Windows can mount VHD images natively, and VirtualBox supports them.
Not the newer VHDX, though.

Nah.
Googled "shell sshd[17263]: error: PAM: authentication error for root from [IP]"

That's kinda what I did to transfer data from and to Hyper-V VMs.

PermitRootLogin yes and... I'm in.

@ThatBrazilianGuy lol @ "really safe pass"

2:58 PM
Now to re-download FreeBSD source, the drivers, and re-compile them.
It's easier than trying to mount a (whatever-filesystem-FreeBSD-uses) .vmdk file on Linux.

> driver lottery

RA are you okay...? Need some help? I think we need to have a talk or two.

I'm assuming $0.25/GB here... that's $14.4M of storage.

@rahuldottech Yeah, but the latency is on the order of minutes to hours.

3:06 PM
Hmm... $68 a pop on Amazon. That's not far off.
Also, you need to be able to read the cards. That takes time.

I know, I know. Latency will be terrible
I'm going offline for a few days
Exams
See ya

I'd use a bunch of high-capacity, high-endurance SATA SSDs and SATA to USB adapters if I somehow needed to move PBs of data.
(assuming that 10GbE is not an option, of course, in which case I'd just use SMB)
For the amount of money needed for the disks, 10GbE is going to be the cheaper and easier option.
Because I could get a pair of Aquantia AQtion NICs and a Cat 6 cable for well under $200.
I don't think a crossover cable would be necessary, but not 100% sure about the features the AQC-107 supports...
(the NICs themselves are $90 a pop)

3:24 PM
Yay, driver compiled over a SSH connection!

3:35 PM
In any case, a Cat 6 crossover cable is cheap if it is indeed necessary...

3:59 PM
And I compiled against the wrong source. Yay.

4:50 PM
Driver module loaded.
Let's see if the PPPoE issue is gone.
