12:05 AM
Slept 14 hours and still fee lethargic. I think I went a bit overboard on those sleeping pills
Oh and I literally have zero memory of the last four messages I wrote last night or why I wrote them. O_o
Which is weird because looking at the dosage chart that was just one tablets worth, I usually take two to sleep. That not 4x the normal dose it's 1/2

Unconscious != Asleep

12:21 AM
@Dog you're taking the next step in hoomin/feline evolution, apparently

Dog
@allquixotic yeah I have no idea what that means
@MichaelFrank TWSS!

@Dog wow

Dog
I think that like many drugs it's a lot better absorbed and less degraded if it goes straight into your blood through your mucous membranes than via the stomach and its various chemicals designed to break stuff down and neutralise it

Still... pushing pills into your nose is probably not the most appealing way to medicate yourself.

12:40 AM
Cause many drugs are designed to be delivered a certain way over time.

So.. slowly pushing them into your nose then?

Bob
12:54 AM
@MichaelFrank That there is a Micro-USB B

@Bob Yea, but it's the USB 3.0 version.

Bob
@MichaelFrank yeees? :P
(I was sure I said that in my message, but ... apparently not)
Is the image actually rotated by 45° or did you just not care to take the time to align it with reality? — Daniel F 7 hours ago

Heh... Who crops an image like that??

Dog
@MichaelFrank I don't
@JourneymanGeek These aren't
Also I was getting pissed off with Windows having removed the advanced display settings dialogs where you can set your monitor resolution and refresh rate... turns out out they hadn't, the buttons just looked like they weren't working, because the dialogs were appearing behind the stupid new Settings app and thus not visible until you closed it
But on the plus side, they at least now admit the resolution you set in the modern settings app is fake

1:17 AM
fake resolution?

Dog
1:31 AM
Yes, fake.

1:45 AM
So 1920x1080 is not my real resolution?!!

Dog
@MichaelFrank If your monitor isn't 1920x1080, then no

2:29 AM
lol "You guys seriously had a discussion about my questions and never tagged me? I'm reporting another CoC violation." -EC in meta
apparently trolls are weaponizing the new code of conduct

linky? :P

Oh, that guy.

> EC

2:50 AM
@allquixotic you do realize we are totally having a conversation about him without tagging him right? :p

3:03 AM
Practically I think the best way to deal with this is, well, as if it was any user
if they feel we're violating the COC, they're free to bring it up to the CMs
If they have a co-hesive arguement other than "I feel victimised cause my obscure OS questions are closed" we'll listen. (and I did close all the pure ROS questions for the interests of consistancy)
interestingly I don't want to ask my windows 10 insider questions cause I'm not sure if they belong here soooooo

anyone not using powershell but command prompt instead?

lots of people? ;p

ok why?
I am because of speed mostly
and no need for the featurse

Why not? If you're running super basic stuff and its good enough its good enough

Yeah that is why I still use it mostly
the command inconsistency is annoying
in fact I call cygwin whois from command prompt lol
Started trying to learn electron very interesting
night time here bye

3:14 AM
Good chat!

3:46 AM
is there a way to get this to work in command prompt?
doskey sudo= runas /user:a "cmd /c \"$*\""
such that the output will be displayed in the same window?
it works but the window shows up for a second and then well dissappears
Different question is there a way for the sudo at minimum to pen in the same direcotry?
doskey sudo= runas /user:a "cmd /k cd %cd% & $*"
this works
although it is displayed in a new window oh well

@JourneymanGeek is that against CoC?

1
A: How do I deal with file downloads?

max630You don't have to use the query syntax to use the script. Even you don't make any additional configuration, merely accessing https://example.com/fetch.php/file.txt url would call the script, providing you the file path as a request parameter. Further, you can set up request rewriting (apache, ii...

Dog
Powers hell is blue. Command promo is black. Saves p owah

@allquixotic not as far as I know

4:01 AM
@William Me. All the time.
I spent a ridiculous amount of time learning cmd and each and every undocumented trick and technique
Not gonna throw that all away
Plus, it's a lot of fun, figuring out how to do stuff in cmd through hacks

@rahuldottech okay how do you nested quotes in command prompt?

@Bob has always hated me for this

@rahuldottech by they way your question do both
direct link and force download link using javascript

@William escape with ^?
In what context? As an argument?

@rahuldottech yeah couldn't get it work in the example above for some reason
like this
doskey sudo= runas /user:a "cmd /k cd ^"%cd%^" & $*"
I managed to drop the "" and it works but don't like it

4:05 AM
@William use `\` to escape instead
(backslash)

ahh yes
powershell made me think command prompt did it differently I guess not
@rahuldottech got to go to bed but please read my answer. It is definitely possible what I have posted.

@William okay, I'll check it out

2 hours later…
5:50 AM
Just released this
@Bob Feel free to take a look at it and poke fun at me whenever you're bored

Bob
@bertieb Ok, honest question (and not singling you out or anything, you're just the only one in chat) => how was this question unclear (in the first revision)?
It... seemed perfectly clear to me.
@rahuldottech My eyes are burning. The indentation...
Like, if nothing else, format it consistently -_-
You're using the filename as unsanitised input in quite a few places.
e.g. printing it to (HTML) output without escaping HTML special chars
e.g. appending it directly to a path to move the file, which allows a directory escape
oh there we go, there's an OWASP for that owasp.org/index.php/Path_Traversal

6:09 AM
@Bob I'll fix it, I was programming on a tinyyyy screen
@Bob eh, file names in general can't have angular brackets, but I'll fix it
@Bob file names typically can't have slashes or HTML chars, so not sure if this is really a big problem
I'll sanitize it anyway.
Ah, apparently angular brackets are allowed on POSIX
TIL

Bob
@rahuldottech File names can't have them, but nothing is stopping me from constructing a HTTP request that tells you the "name" of the file is ../../../../../../etc/passwd and you'll happily accept it...
The core of the problem is you are trusting user input and blindly concatenating it.

6:28 AM
@Bob okay, I'll get on it in a few minutes
@Bob also, this isn't a public site, only the owner and trusted folks are expected to upload files, so...

7:10 AM
@Bob All your concerns have been fixed
(I think)

Morning

8:04 AM
morning
@rahuldottech how is bhutan?

8:19 AM
@Burgi It's great. I love it. The only downside is that Ice Cream is hard to find in the really tiny town in which I live, and that there are a lot of leeches here during monsoon
@Burgi Also, check this outtttt github.com/rahuldottech/psst

8:41 AM
Hey folks. Bit of self promo here. I recently wrote a book on Docker (published by Apress) targeted at people who're new to Docker or making their way around Docker. Book's available on apress - apress.com/in/book/9781484237830 and on Amazon. If you do buy the book, please review it or send me the feedback. Thanks!

9:16 AM
@Sathya yeah i asked if it was available as a docker image
have you got a linkedin post about it? i'll share that with my network

@Burgi oops
@Burgi this is the post.. not sure if you can see this linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6429591795356786688

done :)

9:57 AM
@Sathya That site is weird

Hello everybody. I've been told you might be the right people for showering me with opinions on my PC build (the chat at HWRec is hardly alive and we don't tink this was an OK question for that site). Do you people think this is a good place to ask?

> It seems that you're in Bhutan. We have a dedicated site for Bhutan
Then takes me to the spain site
@Zachiel You can ask...

@Sathya 404

@Zachiel You gotta be logged in

@rahuldottech oh ok
>_> I hate amazon wishlsts, they come packed with names and addresses... It'll take a while to copy my build.
Seagate ST1000DM010 HDD (1 TB, 64 MB Sata III) 38,7€
Tp-link TL-WN881ND wireless board 16,5€
ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS mobo 83,7€
AMD Ryzen 5 1600X 3.6GHz 168,6€ (2667 Mhz)
LC-Power LC600H-12 PSU 600W 39,1€
KingDian sata3 120GB SSD 30€
HP 24o 24" FullHD 1ms monitor 110€
BitFenix NOVA case 45€
Asus DUAL-GTX1060-O3G video card 3GB 2 fans 233,2€
2×Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4 RAM 8GB 102,9€ for both (2666 MHz)
So, is tere something that's blatantly bottlenecky here?
I will use the PC for some gaming, but I'm more interested in keeping this PC for a whil than getting to select the higher graphic options of everything.

10:13 AM
@Zachiel Just... share the wishlist. It'll be wayyy easier to check specs

@rahuldottech There's my friend's name there and addresses. I'll just post single links instead.

@Zachiel Uh, paste them elsewhere (such as gist), and then share the link here, then

@Zachiel kingdian is a bit of an odd choice.
I've used mine pretty heavily but the one I have is an early Dramless drive
Other than that, eh, looks mostly decent. I'd go for a slightly more name brand power supply these days

https://pastebin.com/X5TazviS

the 1060 will probably happily run most things at great settings at full HD

10:24 AM
the storage seems far too cheap

@Burgi looks about right for the brand

@JourneymanGeek the seagate drive?

@Burgi oh
I meant the SSD

I was aiming at lowering the price but halving the RAM, going to i3 (same generation) or getting a 1050 were only around 50€ less and I've been told it's not worth it.

@Zachiel the 1060 is a solid option
Ram's overpriced right now sadly

10:28 AM
About the SSD, I've heard well from a youtube review and my friend, who trusted them, tried it (no problems since but it's a sample of 2...)

@JourneymanGeek My house in Bhutan right now ^ :D

@JourneymanGeek Should I only get one 8GB bank now an wait?

awww
@Zachiel I think 2x 4gb isn't a bad idea

@JourneymanGeek yussss

@rahuldottech awww
@Zachiel is there a "regular" non gaming kingston option?

10:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek 2×4 (same brand) is at 99€ I'm not sure that's a good deal
@JourneymanGeek let me see
hm, wait, wht do you man non-gaming? The Ryzen 5 wants DDR4 and the frequency is the same as the processor.

err
you don't need to match ram and processor frequency
and faster ram's useful for integrated graphics and such but often you're not going to get much difference with slower clocked ram
which might save you a bit.
oh. you're going with 2x8. I misread. ._.
@Zachiel forget what I said about 2x4. But the rest is fine.

@JourneymanGeek keep in mind that I'm going for a 3GB video card

Oh wait. I'm going with 2×4 actully, I forgot we changed tat

your ram amount is fine(I prefer 16 but 8 is enough), but you can save a bit with slower clocked DDR4

10:38 AM
there's this
single 8MB board
a bit slower if I've been taught correctly

eh, 8gb ;p
and practically not by much
That's what I'd do if I was building a computer now (though folks might disagree)

@JourneymanGeek whoooops
@JourneymanGeek I'll be afk for a while but I'm definitely going to read it later.

10:53 AM
hmmm
'Load to my last message' seems to be broken now :/

11:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh, you meant the slower clockd DDR4

11:33 AM
> There are no fundamental changes and no change to intent or meaning – they have just been brought up to date.
wtf is this.
>_<
We changed stuff, but nothing changed!

@djsmiley2k you tell me, is it from a privacy policy?
If so, read it as "we basically changed nothing, but the GDPR European laws wanted us to formalize our usual policies in a different way"

@Zachiel it's from our HR
stuff about locking screens amongst other things.

@djsmiley2k just like the COC :p

Yah

11:50 AM
seriously wtf is wrong with customers?
they want to know if our hosting company's data centre is ISO compliant

@Burgi most probably: some other company is bragging about how their one is and how bad it is if you don't use one that is.
(This happens so often with burglar alarm providers that it's almost funny)

Bob
@Zachiel For the SSD, go Samsung 860 EVO. Best bet.
If you want cheap, consider WD Blue, maybe WD Green.
(WD Green is a bit meh, but has its place as a HDD upgrade)

@Burgi Just say it is, not like they can check //shrug

Bob
KingDian... @JourneymanGeek was being overly nice calling it "odd"
Maybe substitute "odd" for "very weird"

@rahuldottech can't really do that

12:04 PM
@Burgi If they ask for proof, cook something up in MS Word, save as PDF, and lo and behold! Proof!

Bob
@Burgi Which ISO? :P
ISO9001?

@Bob 27001

Bob
Oh, that fun one.
Have fun with the checklist auditors!

@rahuldottech i think misrepresenting ISO certification carries some hefty fines

Bob
@Burgi Not to mention the, y'know, fraud and probable lawsuit from the customer.

12:06 PM
@Burgi ffs, is there even an ISO cert for datacenters?

@Bob exactly

@Bob @Burgi I WAS JOKING

Bob
@rahuldottech Given the, ah, culture (*cough*schools/unis using pirated windows*cough*) over there, it's ... a bit hard to be sure :P

wasn't the indian PM done for faking accreditation documents fairly recently?
i remember @DavidPostill doing some research on it

@Burgi I think that was an MP, and a long time ago? idk. Don't keep up with politics much
@Burgi Ah, no. That was Pakistan
@Bob Surprisingly, that's gone down quite a bit
And half my school PCs now run Ubuntu, so...

12:09 PM
the other half were gifts from microsoft
because enclose
enbrace
extingish!

hey we had acorns at school
look how well that went
what on earth am i meant to do with my 1.6MB RISCOS formatted floppies now?

@Burgi AUCTION 'EM OFF

Bob
@Burgi You probably should've thought about that before storing them with your magnet stash ;)

@Bob hehe
> In South Africa, the 3½-inch [...] was generally called a stiffy
yes i am still a child ;)
> ADFS 1.6M. This format can store 1.6MB of data.
High-density floppy discs (1.44MB IBM type) must be used
found it!
not sure how they managed to get 1.6 out of 1.44

12:36 PM
@Bob Only the port, not the ip address. That's what the FR is requesting, the ability to set up the ip address.

oo ooo I did an escape room at the weekend

1:02 PM
neh good morning

wtf lol

Dog
2:17 PM
@Bob you're stuck in an lxd loop
@JourneymanGeek not for long

@Dog ya, waiting for it to drop

@Bob Not really, because you didn't notice that the unifi controller bind all ip address, which a lxd container wouldn't be able to avert.
ie. you want the controller listening on port 80 and the redirector for the capture portal on the same port, but different ip. One of them wouldn't be able to effectively bind the port since the other service already binded it.
Which wouldn't help since the AP redirects the clients in guest mode to an specific url.

Bob
2:36 PM
@Braiam I "didn't notice" because you didn't mention it.
Good luck.
I could suggest a very simple reverse proxy (and the redirect using hostname option) but you'd probably come up with another reason that won't work, soooo.

@Dog lxd stahp ---> hangs forever? :D

Bob
@Braiam Actually, reading that again, a container would work perfectly fine.
Inside container: unifi binds *
view from outside container: container's IP addresses are bound
Put the capture portal on a different container.
@allquixotic That actually happened a lot pre-3.0 :\
--force is useful

2:55 PM
i am here to keep my chat stats alive

Bob
@allquixotic ^ !!no.? :P

3:20 PM
urgh
what's that site which gives you neatly formmatted explaination of a command line...
ah explainshell.com
but there was another, which gave you an ascii image

3:36 PM
@Bob lol
!!learn mexino <>https://i.stack.imgur.com/CLO2l.jpg

@allquixotic Command mexino learned

!!mexino

what symbol is this?
if i copy it out of excel its a Y

3:39 PM
@Bob Can't do, controller and portal are all on a single process. I know, it should be able to, but the program even starts its own mongodb instance by default, instead of connecting to a remote one.
@Burgi I think is tau
mm.. nope
it's psi

hmm... its from tables for loading weights
i wonder if it means pounds per square inch?
which wouldn't make sense because the rest of the table is in metric

4:05 PM

@XKCD i don't get it

> This explanation may be incomplete or incorrect

Dog
@JourneymanGeek News is as various fabs are gearing up production and moving towards overproduction next year, prices will start declining soon and continue declining well into 2019. Quite how far and how fast... not sure
So just did the math, over the last three days managed to make $620 on my trades and lose $832. If it weren't for that dumb intoxicated derp-order on LSD that lost $140 I'd have broken even and made +$100

4:54 PM
@Dog ya, trying to put off a new build as long as possible ._.

@allquixotic am i blind or is there no explaination?
@Dog stop failing
if u weren't derp, you'd be #winning

@djsmiley2k "monitor" ;p

lol

so not yet. But you might be visually impared too!

just wanted to confirm something wasn't hiding it from me :P

5:00 PM
wow, that's all the xkcd eggheads have gotten out of it yet
> Well I went right to Explain XKCD on this one. Nothing there yet beyond the cartoon. There may or may not be a real puzzle hidden here, but I ain't spending any time looking for it ... knowing Randall's propensity for messing with his readers' heads.

Dog
5:23 PM
@JourneymanGeek I'm just lucky I picked a warehouse deal/returned/refurbished laptop that had 32GB RAM just before the prices shot up
The options were 4K G-Sync with 8GB RAM or 1080p with 32GB... 4K would have been tempting, but the battery life gets cut by 2 hours
Also 1080p on a 15" display is already excessive
If the 4K wasn't G-Sync (or I'd known I could I could disable it with a BIOS switch) I might have actually got it, thinking I could upgrade the RAM later. Which wouldl have not have been a good result
As for new build, get something that uses DDR3? :_D

5:42 PM
naaw
no real rush
its more of an itch than an actual need to build a new PC

Dog
I still need to sell my old piece of junk
Aslo only took me five days to find Kraken's new trading engine, which was advertised in a giant bar on their homepage the whole time.... it looks pretty cool! Finally a website I can use in fullscreen
Largely because it combines stuff I needed four oddly sized windows for, into one page. And saves the srceen estate used by four title bars and shit.

errrm
@Dog a few modern browsers do tiled tabs ;p
I thing ff does 2. Vivaldi foes any arbitrary number

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Chrome isn't a modern browser by Firefox's standards
But really, a bespoke web interface that incorporates everything useful, is still way better than tiled tabs
Even if I could tile the tabs, I'd still get something like this:
Which still actually provides less information, in a messier manner.
Haha Dogecoin is still listed!

Dog
6:12 PM
It's even got my trades built in so I don't have to manually draw them like on third party sites
I think I need another monitor. And a displayport splitter

MST!
it's 2018. MST.

Dog
@allquixotic Yeah I should get a MST adapter... These are 2012 monitors...

Dog
(I'm assuming a terminal monitor on an MST chain doesn't need MST itself?)

@Dog I believe a monitor only needs MST support if that monitor is passing through another monitor's signal (other than its own) downstream to the computer

Dog
6:19 PM
Fuck that, nope! These monitors are from 2008 tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_lp2475w.htm

so with an N-display setup, always the one furthest away from the computer in the daisy chain wouldn't need it; the rest would

Dog
I'd need a splitter I think, since none of them support passthrough.
Also, how badly does that eff up the bandwidth? One of my displays (the 120Hz one) only supports 120Hz over DP, so I can't chuck that on the HDMI port. So I'd have three displays dangling off the one mDP out

to be fair, MST is still pretty buggy with modern hardware here (2017 monitors and 2018 Coffee Lake / Pascal laptop)
took a lot of finagling to get it working right

Dog
What mysterious laptop is this you've got? I know you have/had an Alienware, but is this a different one?

@Dog as long as the total pixels per second doesn't exceed what the GPU it's connected to can handle, it should be fine

6:20 PM
0_0
those are bulky

@Dog Razer Blade 15 (2018)
1070 Max-Q

Dog
(Cause IIRC the Alienware didn't have a Max-Q GPU)

yeah, I saved about a kilogram of weight and several millimeters of thickness, got a bigger screen with much thinner bezels but the same WxH footprint, and better non-gaming battery life, with more shader cores, higher maximum performance on A/C power, and bought aftermarket upgrades to the tune of 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB 970 EVO
in upgrading from the Alienware 13 R3 to the 144 hz 1080p 1070 Max-Q variant of the Razer Blade 15

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Yes, very, which is why I was reluctant to go get them out of storage. Also why I specifically bought a 2KG 1080p IPS for my "travels"
@allquixotic Ah
Does it charge over USB-C?

don't think so

6:23 PM
nope, not at all... proprietary connector to a 230W massive power brick

the stealth does

Dog
@allquixotic Ick*

I'm still trying to talk myself out of getting a gpd pocket 2

Dog
I was hoping my Alienware would... it doesn't :-(

I'm hoping it'll be compatible with smaller ones using the same connector in the future

Dog
6:24 PM
The 15" Dell XPSs of the same generation did :-(

very few laptops do charge off of USB-C, and the ones that do are generally IGP only, or wimpy ass dGPU... a serious dGPU can't run full tilt on USB-C and manufacturers don't want to advertise "plugging it in will slow the rate of discharge", because that's not how people think of chargers

Dog
I mean sure, it's not going to game at full load and charge over USB-C, but an overnight trickle charge would still do

@allquixotic the blade stealth's the former, you can connect to a dock for gaming

they figure that if it can't properly charge (and decently fast) off of USB PD, then they don't bother

but that's good enough for me

Dog
6:26 PM
@allquixotic Tbh, a lot of iGPU only/whimpy ass dGPU laptops with only USB-C charging will still discharge while at full load with the charger plugged in, even the highest-end USB-charging laptops still only tend to come with 60w chargers

I guess if you shut off the nvidia GPU you could probably get an actual charge (at least a trickle charge, plus satisfying immediate power demands) off of USB PD with a charger supporting up to the maximum wattage of the spec (what, 100W?)
@Dog the 15" MBP with its pre-Vega GCN 2.x Pro board (Radeon Pro 560 / 560X) can charge off of Apple's standards-compliant USB-C PD charger, but I think it's 100W
and it will charge under load
I was really hoping they'd use the Vega M GH on-package-with-Intel-CPU solution for the 15" MBP and really pissed they didn't
it seems perfect for MBP... so why the fuck
also, the Radeon Pro 560X is still pre-Vega. It's Polaris with higher clocks, which I think might actually be 16 or 14 nm, but it's still nothing relative to Pascal

Dog
@allquixotic 100W USB-PD chargers are rare, especially third party ones. Lots of pass-through accessories for the Macbook also max out at 60w
The HP Spectre uses 80w at load, and comes with a 90w PD charger, which will just about barely charge under load. And that's a high end/flagship product -_-

@Dog the one with Vega M GL?

Dog
Flagship as in "Posh/shiny/expensive/executive flagship" not "performance.
@allquixotic Nah, it's got a whimpy MX150

@Dog and that's the only kind you'll see with USB PD style chargers until or unless the USB spec is revised to support more juice
I would say 200W minimum before guys like Razer, Alienware, et al. start bothering with that method of chooch for dGPU laptops with more than the entry level chip's worth of shaders and DRAM.

Dog
6:36 PM
@allquixotic GPU can handle it fine not sure if the HP monitors are DP 1.0 or 1.1... it's not specified but says HDCP, which is apparently only 1.1+
@allquixotic I mean I was impressed when Dell's first XPS with USB-C supported two-way power delivery on it's USB port but I didn't think it'll still be that rare in 2018...
That was a 6600HQ with a 960M. Power consumption well over 100w
> 3-way DisplayPort MST splitter £134.39 GBP inc VAT
Eh I could buy a new DisplayPort monitor for that. Or a USB VGA adapter. Which I already have but can't find

6:52 PM
how do the Ryzen+Vega APUs compare to Intel + GMA (Intel integrated) in terms of power consumption for web surfing and video? need to look up tests for that
also curious about their top-end perf, but willing to bet it's faster than GMA
there haven't been any changes at all to GMA since Skylake

Dog
@allquixotic Very efficient, and very fast
Well the CPU side is very efficient. The GPU side is... comparable. +/-20% but which way exactly I can't remember
Intel iGPUs have always been pretty efficient for low load stuff mind you so its hard to beat
Urgh, only 390 tabs and Chrome is this slow at launching? Bleh. I need a better browser
