how about CPU activity for the past month?
@Nick there isn't anything built-in on your system that would keep track of CPU activity for that long of a period
you could probably install a program to start capturing that data, but right now I guarantee your system doesn't have anything gathering that data out of the box
long term CPU usage isn't a useful metric anyway, imo
application usage might be. I'm still not sure if I use sublime, vscode or atom more
Might be able to get some interesting stuff out of the "app history" tab of Task Manager
Check Options | Show history for all processes for it to be actually useful

Q: Why is my memory at 65% usage when I'm not running any programs?

MartinI don't know why my memory is showing 65% usage even though I'm not running any programs. And sometimes it's stuck. My laptop specifications: Acer Aspire VX 15 OS : Windows 10 x64 lastest update RAM : 24GB DDR4 2400 SSD : 512GB HDD : 1TB CPU : corei7 7th gen 7700HQ 2.8 Graphics ...

Zombie processes strike again!
I love how responsive this guy is when asked for more information.
Wish we had more askers like that.
@allquixotic perfmon can do it, and is built-in, just not enabled by default
browsh is quite lulzy
needs firefox, but it does, in theory, let me run SE over a ssh connection
Mobile chat works too. though no autoscrolling I suspect

So, out of curiosity, has anyone here experienced a circuit breaker tripping when running a game or other intensive workload on their PCs?
Jun 15 '17 at 20:27, by bwDraco
Two circuits service my bedroom (one is shared with the bathroom, the other is not well determined, though I do which one of the outlets is separate), so I do have a means of load-balancing in the event I have multiple devices demanding lots of power.
Finally matched all circuit breakers to outlets and other devices in this house.
It turns out Astaroth is on a dedicated circuit \o/
Bob
Bob
Eh. You and your puny American power :P
lol
20A circuit, in fact.
Bob
Bob
2.4kW, in other words
but IIRC the sockets and plugs are rated for 15A
Two sockets in one duplex outlet.
FWIW, circuit breakers are not supposed to be loaded at more than 80% continuously, which is 16A or 1920W.
The outlet assembly is, on a whole, not really rated for more than 15A, and that's probably a combined rating.
But it does ultimately mean that I can expect to get a full 15A at all times on that outlet without an elevated risk of a fire.
04:39
@Bob what's the maximum wattage (or as AvE would say, pixies) for your power? I know the voltage but what's the amperage
for a typical mains socket
04:51
@Aibobot +1809????
Bob
Bob
05:09
@allquixotic Typical mains is 2.4kW per socket (10A @ 230V nominal though 240V usual)
typical MCB is 16A min for a GPO circuit, though some are 20A or 25A (which means more GPOs can be put on the circuit, but the wiring must suit)
Bob
Bob
UK does 13A per socket IIRC
2.4 kW seems to be the limit for both US and AUS - I wonder if there's some kind of magic number where above 2.4 kW it's lethal or something
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic well, no, US is more like 1.8kW
ah - right - bw has a 20A socket which is much higher than standard US
usually we're at 15A 110/120V
05:11
@MichaelFrank I mainly use aibo for testing
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic he has a 20A circuit, with one or more 15A sockets
ahhhhh
@Bob yup, and there's a higher amperage socket option
Bob
Bob
we have 16A circuits with one or more 10A sockets
and our circuts are designed for pretty high overall wattage
Bob
Bob
05:12
'course you can get 15A+ sockets but they're very unusual
@allquixotic I think US settled on 15A because 10A on 120V is just not enough and 20A is hard (on the wires and contacts)
AU settled on 10A probably because it's a nice round number :P
idk where the brits get 13A from... maybe they found 3kW as a nice round number
20A is pretty common in corporations though it uses an incompatible plug - it's used for the beefier UPSes, for one thing
I wonder what an IBM mainframe uses for its pixies
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic our higher-current plugs are mostly backwards (downwards?) compatible
lol
I can check
btw @Bob just so you know, Hyper-V guest accelerated graphics only works on Win10 Pro guests
I upgraded to Win10 Pro and instantly got like-native graphics performance in this guest
looks like a standard kettlecord
Bob
Bob
05:16
you can plug a 10A device into 15A, 25A, 32A sockets
'course that's probably bad cause if there's a short in the device that cable is gonna melt
@allquixotic I suppose that's fair enough, not many people run Linux for the graphics engines :P
@Bob well, I was more comparing Win10 Home guest to Win10 Pro guest.
Linux guest => nope, Win10 Home guest => nope, Win10 Pro guest => yup
your supposition that Hyper-V probably has the best Windows guest performance was spot-on, as far as I can tell
it's really, really good.
I'm not gaming in the guest, so I don't know about the performance there, but it's responsive and fluid
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic o_O
@allquixotic tbf vmware is also responsive and fluid
it's just vbox that's poor
05:38
unsurprisingly, the feature of Windows that puts security services behind Hyper-V (isolated from the host OS) is incompatible with VMware
I decided I'd rather not disable that :P
using chocolatey to grab packages I need in the VM. it's so easy \o/
Bob
Bob
05:52
@allquixotic IIRC it is in 1803 (or the next one?)
@allquixotic There are 220V sockets in the US for use with electric clothes-dryers, with some supporting up to 30A.
@bwDraco yeah... though I'm not quite sure why ours isn't natural gas powered, as natural gas through a pipe is a more efficient means of transporting energy that gets used as heat, compared to electricity
coal -> electricity is better for work and fossil fuels directly combusted on premises are better for producing heat
esp because it's very efficient to transport natural gas, just requires a pump on one end
The NEMA 5-20R receptacle (similar to the ubiquitous NEMA 5-15R, but with a T shape in the neutral slot) is most often found in commercial environments but is sometimes seen in places like kitchens for use with high-power appliances.
Normal 15A devices will fit in the 5-20R receptacle, but the neutral connector of 20A devices is horizontal so that it will not fit in a 5-15R socket.
Code actually requires NEMA 5-20R in kitchens for new construction; this is to accommodate certain high-power appliances like toaster ovens and blenders.
06:08
@allquixotic or CHP - which some european countries do, burning fuel onsite, using it to generate power and 'waste' heat
yeah that's probably the best
@bwDraco yeah we have several of those
@bwDraco funny story, we can't run our microwave and toaster together, it trips the 15A circuit :D
but the range top electric stove is on another circuit, so that's fine running concurrently with anything, it's probably 20A or even higher
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I mean the ability to run any hypervisor with it
or maybe it was just with hyper-v, idk
Hmm... It looks like 20A receptacles aren't required, but 20A circuits are.
The circuit for the two appliance branch circuits must be rated at 20A. The receptacles (outlets), because these circuits are multi-outlet branch circuits, do not necessarily have to be 20A as far as I can tell. Same in the bathroom; 20A is required for the wiring but that is because the circuit is multi-outlet; the receptacles themselves can be 15A. It's been covered before that it is acceptable to install a 15A outlet on a 20A circuit. — KeithS Apr 19 '12 at 18:51

huh - Chrome in a RemoteFX-enabled Win10 Pro guest gets no hardware accel and scrolling feels like uncompressed VNC over ADSL
Edge in the same guest with the same config feels buttery smooth, 99% as good as the host

I guess there's a fine line between moderation and free speech (altho with any private entity free speech MMV)
Even the Fine Bros (who deleted critical comments at the height of the licensing/franchising/branding controversy) still have > 17M subscribers
Besides, who reads Playboy for the articles YouTube for the comments?

@bertieb my girlfriend does :(
@Burgi My deepest sympathies

Can shortcode senders be spoofed?
Because my operator doesn't seem to accept spam reports about shortcodes

that'll cost you a fiver

i find sending messages to shortcodes costs a fortune

there's something fucked up about Hyper-V
reliably, when I try to start Hyper-V, my entire system freezes, but when I do anything else it's fine
like, permanently freezes, mouse stops, etc.
13:13
Hi, I have once desktop PC which is not turning on. Althouth PC turns on, Fans are running, monitor power lights are blinking and doesn't display anything. What could be the problem?
I don't have external video card. only built in Graphics.
Checked unplugging and re-plugging power cables as well as VGA cables.
also RAM.
unable to open BIOS.
@Pandya have you tried a different screen?
@Burgi Yes,
any beeps on power up?
@Pandya i take it that the 2nd screen doesn't work either?
Actually the problem is not found recently, we experience the problem occasionally for more than an year and it goes away after sometime!!
can I ask a question on these problem on SU?
sounds like a bad cable or the screen is set to look at the wrong input?
you can but it is very broad
13:27
Hmm.
@Pandya It's askable, but might get people VTC as 'too broad'
(ninja'd; what Burgi says)
Btw, what happens if we don't attach VGA at all?
CPU should work normally, right?
yeah
well, here one thing is that we don't have power on Keyboard when we faces the issue.
So, I can make sure about the problem without monitor at all.
faulty power supply?
13:30
So, assume VGA and monitor doesn't affect the problem, now what could be the cause?
there is literally too many possibilities here
are the drives and fans spinning up?
@Burgi Yes
any indicator lights on the case?
by case you mean cabinet?
no i mean the PC tower
13:32
Yes, there is one green light on mother board.
@Burgi I've checked the power cable, now one possibility is to check with another SMPS (PSU)
its starting to sound terminal tbh
Btw, I'm sure the PC will turn on after sometime (may be after several hours) and will run for days without any problem but the problem arrives occasionally -- this looks funny but do you have any idea on this condition?
overheating?
as i said, the problem is too broad
of processor?
maybe?
13:36
@Burgi oh ok
If the CPU was overheating, would it not thermal cutoff itself? (switch itself off)
does your location have stable utility power?
I guess the answer is 'maybe'
@bertieb yes, but I am still not sure about overheating since PC can run without any interrupt of overheating for hours and currently (in present case when the problem arrived) when I am trying to turn on, the PC was off for a day.
have you tried a different wall socket?
13:38
@Burgi Yes.
swap out the PSU then
if that doesn't work the problem is with the motherboard somewhere
Hey, braking news: PC turned ON just! (and working like charming) now will run without problem of power supply, overheating etc. until I off.
i bet it is the PSU
@Burgi ok. I'll consider to have one PSU in spare so-that I can check and verify.
Thanks for your several valuable suggestion.
ugh
sourcetree is adding an extra / to all the pull request URLs
anyone else come across that issue?
14:13
never done PRs with sourcetree personally
14:52
@Burgi lmao haha
@allquixotic You mean touchpad, last I checked no Macbooks had a fingerprint reader option
@allquixotic I believe the Razer comes with 4K wide-gamut and touchscreen options for the display as well (i.e. probably comparable to the Retina on the MBP), but you can't get that and 144Hz at the same time.
Also is it one 4TB SSD or two 2TB SSDs in the MBP?
@RegularGDPR then you haven't checked since before 2016
all touchbar macbooks have TouchID built into the power button, and it's really accurate/fast (I have one)
@allquixotic Probably. I've been homeless since 2016, so Macbook Pro's haven't been on the top of my concerns list
15:07
@RegularGDPR and yet you know all about Razer :P
A couple other manufacturers (HP, Dell) have announced laptops with 4TB NVMe but both use 2x2TB drives. But Apple have also had soldered SSDs in the past or could be using a pre-public-release-exclusive
@allquixotic JMG keeps banging on about it! (Also, it was one of the main contenders when I bought my Alienware 15R3)
@RegularGDPR one 4 TB SSD as far as the block layer of the OS can see; might be 2 x 2 TB chips in some kind of controller-level hardware RAID-0 but you wouldn't be able to see that in the OS
A couple manufacturers have announced 4TB single NVMe SSDs, and Samsung's had one leaked too, competition is really hotting up now that 3+ fabs have of 3D TLC V-NAND in mass production
@allquixotic That's actually pretty cool. Fingerprint sensors on PCs are consistently inconsistent, and almost always come as an "option" that can't be selected with other options I need.
@RegularGDPR yeah, and it's not one of those IBM "Nananananana" ones (that's a reference to an IBM commercial from years ago) where you have to swipe your finger
you just gently place it there like an iPhone
@allquixotic I'm not terribly against the swipe ones on laptops/PCs. They usefully double as an additional set of directional inputs (up down left right scroll, etc), whereas on phones they're just awful (e.g. Samsung S5)
My on old Fujitsu business convertible for example I could use the swipey fingerprint reader as a makeshift micro touchpad when in tablet mode and the actual touchpad was hidden (this is after I broke the touchscreen and had to use pen only input in tablet mode)
In fact that laptop/tablet/convertible had a linear touchpad scroll bar next to the screen too, and a circular touchpad scroll wheel next to the main touchpad, for a total of 5 capacitive touch inputs. Using more than one at a time made everything laggy as hell though, as if they were all hooked up to a single PS/2 controller
15:38
@RegularGDPR that was your own choice
iirc you were planning to stow away to australia
@Burgi No, that's next year
why australia?
Technically if I hadn't moved out when I did, my flatmates were moving out in a couple months anyway, so I'd have been left in a 3 person flat when I'm not even on the lease...
all the wildlife tries to kill you, its dusty and VERY hot
@Burgi Because I'm about to become too old for the 1-year working holiday programme, and last time I was there for a week I managed to draw up a to-do list 3 months long already
15:55

@bertieb, as I always I appreciate all of the time and effort you devote to the Suggested Edits queue, but I am a bit curious regarding the rationale behind approving this one:
The edit makes the post a lot easier to read
Styling makes a big difference
Rejecting edits to very old posts is normal if the improvement is negligible, but I'd say the revised version is significantly better
(I would have approved it too)
@Run5k I felt the improvement was significant - i in place of I is one that makes my own eye twitch! - enough that I felt it was a reasonable improvement. The post is old, but potentially answerable (solutions for new users if not OP).
@BenN, yes, absolutely. But when I first started reviewing Suggested Edits, I was very sternly mentored regarding approving edits to an older post. This one is actually 8½ years old and hasn't received any up-votes, comments, or answers.
17:06
Hmm, I hadn't seen such guidance - where did you find it?
@BenN, that was within previous chat sessions and Meta questions, almost two years ago.
Not formal guidance per se... more like firm "mentoring" from people who had lived within the SU realm much longer than I had at the time.
Interesting. I have a different philosophy of suggested edits - I'm trying to find some MSE guidance

Q: Minor edits of old questions

JustSidIt seems like some users make minor edits to old (and mostly) answered questions, editing things like tags, grammar and similar other minor details. So far this isn't bad and exactly what the edit function is for, but the problem I have is that it brings lots of attention to old and probably alre...

Of course, I would be glad to comply with the rules-of-the-road. I can easily recognize that those proposed edits were beneficial. However, I checked the question before I decided to approve or reject, and noticed the age, lack of feedback, and that it hadn't been bumped already.
Based upon what I had been taught before, I thought the consensus interpretation was to reject that type of edit. If I am mistaken, my apologies and I will adjust accordingly in the future.

5 hours later…
22:05
@bertieb, once again my sincere apologies if I have been working under a long-term misunderstanding regarding when to approve/reject edits on older questions. As usual, you are on top of things so thank you for correcting my mistake!

1 hour later…
23:10
@Run5k No apologies necessary- I think your considerations were valid and well-founded; in the absence of a strict quantitative rule it's a judgement call and different folks will draw the line at slightly different points in the same area. As ever you review with the review with the best of intentions; and I appreciate you taking the time to review the reviews, it's a noble endeavour :)
