cat fish!
GDPRfish
hi GDPRdino
hmm
is it a good idea or bad idea?
what?
17:18
GDPR
I'm not an idea; I'm a cat
not just a cat.
ok, you caught me; I'm a cat cat
less cat or more cat?
less is better than more, so less cat
17:34
less $(which cat)?
@Zanna "/dev/gdpr/accept_yes/bin/cat" may be a binary file. See it anyway?
lol
gdpr affected filesystem standard?
@Zanna I'd tell you, but you have to accept my privacy policy first.
oh no thanks
maybe we could apt source cat instead and it would be more readable
@Zanna It's okay; I'm used to rejection. My privacy policy is rather egregious anyway.
@Zanna Sure, go ahead. You'll just get EDQUOT (Disk quota exceeded) after a while
17:41
maybe I'm invading your privacy a bit by trying to read you
You don't read the cat; the cat reads you. That's how this works. Trying to read the cat is like trying to have an API call you somehow, only in reverse. ... OK, bad analogy; forget that callbacks exist.
Frustratingly, the most feature-complete alternative to cat is dog. I'm pretty salty about that.
$ cat /dev/fd/0
hi
hi
do you read me?
do you read me?
o_O
you have a floppy connected with raw ASCII text on it?
haha file descriptor 0 is STDIN
OHHHHH I missed that /
/dev/fd/0 would be a file descriptor; /dev/fd0 is a floppy disk
17:46
oh!
@Zanna you're invading his privacy... bit by bit
/dev/fd is a symlink to /proc/self/fd anyway, at least on my system
you know, back in the days when floppies were common, I really wonder how common it was to accidentally interact with the floppy disk when you meant stdin and vice versa
@rahuldottech ew I don't do invasions
@GDPR hahaha
@GDPR that reminds me
I'm finding it really hard to find floppy disks
17:48
you want some?
Which I need for my archaic synthesizer
oooh :)
I found one of the old "flat" ~600K floppies with the original Duke Nukem game on it, purchased from the GEWA store at Goddard Spaceflight Center by my mom in circa 1991, in a crate while cleaning out a room recently
(this store)
user226528
@Zanna I looked and I looked. Couldn't find any. Ended up buying a USB floppy emulator drive. Gotta get it fitted though
aww
when I was in high school, floppies were all we had XD
what about when you were in elementary school?
user226528
What is a floppy emulator drive? Floppy emulator, I understand. But "drive"?
OH NOES
GDPR IS UPON US
user226528
17:53
LOL
@ThatBrazilianGuy Do you accept the privacy policy?
Do you????????
user226528
ROFL
@GDPR here they call it primary school. I guess they had floppies there too. But we didn't have many computers. At home I had a ZX Spectrum. Its programs were on casette tapes
Excuse me sir, do you have time to accept the new policy and terms of privacy
I see. Now we have established the spectrum based on what technology was available when we were in primary/elementary school.
Zanna: Casette tapes on ZX Spectrum
GDPR/allquixotic: 600K "big" floppies connected to early DOS PCs or Apple II GS
Rahul: the iPhone 4S (the n00b)
17:56
I had one of those:
See the label: 64 KB
You connected it to the TV
In my base, a b & w CRT
@ThatBrazilianGuy Painful. That's only 10% as much RAM as the amount that would be enough for anybody!
Files were saved to a cassete tape
Sometimes they were even read from the tape!
@ThatBrazilianGuy only slightly more reliable than drawing with your finger in the sand, right?
@GDPR hahaha XD nice to be young. But I'm not jealous. My life got a lot better over time
I have to get dressed and go interview for an internal position within the company that requires an experienced AWS expert; I'm only a mildly experienced AWS hobbyist, so this should be fun
@Zanna mine has stayed about the same except for being older and slower and getting muscles aches and cramps :P
when I walk, sometimes it sounds like the sound effect of a skeleton walking in video games
which should tell me something about what's inside me
18:00
I thought cats were all like flexible and stuff
OMG GUYS, YUCK, THERE'S A SKELETON INSIDE ME
XD
I think my best year was when I was about 23
it's been flat at best, and sometimes worse since then
@Zanna To be honest the less reliable I remember were those 1.44 MB floppies back from the 386 / 486 era in the early to mid 90's.
I remember buying many boxes and throwing out 7 out of each 10 floppies
@GDPR Are you taking TOWMN's meds?
@ThatBrazilianGuy old home-burnt CDs are usually toast by now, too
@ThatBrazilianGuy no, I don't eat/drink after other cats
18:03
@GDPR iPhone was launched when I was in first grade
@GDPR I refuse to believe it, while also refusing to check said CDs.
Hey all...since we can't post bounties for Meta questions I'm here to raise awareness for...

Q: Tag Synonym request: [task-scheduler] vs. [windows-task-scheduler]

HanneleA pair of tags I came across on Super User - both task-scheduler and windows-task-scheduler exist, but as far I can see they're both the same thing: task-scheduler: a component in Windows that, like the unix cron daemon, allows scripts to be run at defined times. (questions) windows-task-schedu...

@TwistyImpersonator upboated. also, awesome that a FreshBooks lady is contributing on SU. You meet so many cool professionals in companies you've heard of on the network
"meet" - doubt I will ever directly interact with said individual lest they drop into chat
@GDPR Yeah, I noticed that too. Oddly I was just helping a client look for alternate accounting programs.
be back after I've rotated through four half-hour interviews that are likely to make me sweat ... assuming I make it through all four...
wish me luck :S
(and yes, when they say my company is an equal opportunity employer, they also accept cats that can properly fill out the application)
18:07
@GDPR Interviews? Changing jobs?
@ThatBrazilianGuy my current... you know what, Matrix, I'm not going to do that here
@GDPR best of luck!
@GDPR Ha!
I really wanna rant about... stuff too.
stuff is so stupid
@Zanna couldn't agree more
ب_ب
18:16
but other stuff is awesome and amazing...
@rahuldottech nice emoji! Are those Arabic letters?
I used to read Farsi, but I have forgotten most of it :(

user226528
I still can.
user226528
Once something goes into my permanent memory, it never goes out.
18:33
Jemery does all the best thingvs
PSN is down, PANIC
18:57
mmm
One... more.... item.... to... paste....
AND DONE
19:52
Having a brain fart. Can’t figure out how to spell the word suspectable as in”that part isn’t suspecable to EMI”. Can Anyone fill in the gaps?
"susceptible"
@FleetCommand that's enviable
I mean, in theory it's all in there, right? You just lose access to it
20:34
Quick Q: does HyperV require a server to dedicate at least one NIC for a VM to get an external Internet connection?
20:52
No
You can create a virtual switch that lets the host and VMs use the NIC
@cybermonkey No. What I've done in the past is to use a virtual switch and have it connected to the host's network adapter. VMs on the switch can talk to each other as well as access the Internet.
I had projects for a hacking class that required a pair of VMs to be disconnected from the Internet for security reasons but are otherwise connected to each other. With no DHCP server, I had to manually assign static IPs, but it otherwise only required me to disconnect the switch from the host adapter to leave the VMs on an isolated LAN.
(Metasploitable on one VM, Kali Linux on the other)
Occassionally, with only the Kali VM running, I would hook up the vSwitch to the host adapter to perform updates, then disconnect it and launch the Metasploitable VM to run projects.
21:08
I’m a law. paper flipping sound Check meowt!

@GDPR LOL
I'm literally laughing out loud, that's great
21:39
Bullshit. Someone born in the year 2000 would be 18 today, and would have been 4yo back on 2004 when ICQ was in its peak
So @GDPR how the interviews went?
@bwDraco Does this mean that I still need a DHCP server on the host or as a guest to give out IPs to the guest VMs?
Assuming there's a DHCP server somewhere on the real network, you're covered
His fine-tuning was only necessary because he needed the VMs isolated but connected to each other
@BenN There isn't unfortunately.
Ah, then you'll need to either set IPs or set up DHCP

1 hour later…
23:12
@ThatBrazilianGuy great!!!! :D
I am expecting an email soon saying I have a new job
Good luck!
Three cheers for continued employment!
Hip hip...
23:27
Chip chip...
CHIPPAY?

23:59
@GDPR YAY! NEW JOBS! PAY RAISES!
