I should have gone to bed earlier, but late night seemed like a good time to reconcile accounts

A: Disabling Windows 10 update forever, Embedded use

AveYo windows_update_toggle.bat Conveniently toggle Windows Update on/off from the new Desktop right-click context menu entry (status is written right next to entry). While Windows Update is disabled, Installing apps from the Store works! And so does Defender internal check for definition...

I think this strays into link-only answer territory; without the external script it's near-useless
(Besides that, it doesn't actually answer the question which was asked as far as I can see)
But I may be grumpy due to being up past my bedtime
So if someone else would like to weigh in, that'd be appreciated :)
If not no worries, review queues will handle it
In my grumpiness I assumed the whole thing was lifted from somewhere else, but a quick search for the phrases seems that altho it's quoted, it's written primarily here
I've seen some folks use > either because that's how they think replies should be written (cf email) or for emphasis
grumping continues

12:56 AM
They moved their answer moved from that Q to a more appropriate one (I think), but I still wonder about it

I mean, on the one hand its not much without the scripts; but then OTOH even good software-rec answers aren't much if the software disappears either...

...and there is practically no layover due to the late first flight. Onboard BR29 from TPE to JFK. See you in about 15 hours.
It's BR32, not BR29, but we're finally back in New York.
Taxiing into the gate. We'll be going through customs soon, so see you in a bit.

Though @rahuldottech could not make it to the HNQs, he made it to the starred list.
Congratulations mate....

2:47 AM
Got through about 10 minutes ago. Should be home in a couple of hours.

3:12 AM
._.
New flashlights are shipped. And what I really want hasn't ;p
and it'll probably be shipped by normal post and take two months to arrive

Bob
3:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek at least it'll probably arrive :P

Apparently intended to prevent device manufacturers from shipping uncertified devices with Google apps, but custom ROM users are caught in the crossfire. A special procedure is now required for these users.

@bwDraco which isn't any more painful than unlocking bootloaders on many machines

Yeah, but I haven't set up ADB on my main desktop.
I'll do it when I get a chance.

@Bob ya
but eh, would be nice to have a wallet I don't totally hate :(
I miss the one I lost.

3:40 AM
I hope custom ROM developers are able to deregister old IDs...
(because they're not shipping physical devices with the Google apps, they should be allowed to do so - this is meant to stop unlicensed device manufacturers)

@bwDraco I think its end user/device rather than per rom
so literally you run an ADB command, and register your device with google
and all's good

The problem is that it changes on a factory reset, and frequent factory resets are unavoidable during the development process.
Hopefully, Google and the custom ROM community will sort this out.
I hope we see a formal license agreement soon for custom ROM users and developers so that there's no more grey area.
Perhaps they should use device model number and the IMEI or SN instead if possible?
(non-cellular devices don't have IMEIs but they're still required to have valid, unique SNs under the Android CDD)
> SERIAL

A hardware serial number, which MUST be available and unique across devices with the same MODEL and MANUFACTURER. The value of this field MUST be encodable as 7-bit ASCII and match the regular expression “^([a-zA-Z0-9]{6,20})$”.
Hmm... that might not work if a device manufacturer skirts the rules by assigning the same SN to multiple devices. Things would break, but that possibility can't be ignored.
(IOW serial number must be an alphanumeric string between 6 and 20 characters long; not sure why they need to formally define it with a regex)

4:15 AM
My TV tuner card arrived. Apparently reception decided it just wasn't worth letting me know. shrug

!! Caaaaaaaaat
!! Is the bot dead?
!! Am I dead?
I'm sure I didn't kill that many brain cells last night...

Bob
4:32 AM
@bwDraco the factory reset will take a few order of magnitudes more time than this
heck, you could probably script it
adb + curl

...and I'm home.

4:49 AM
@Bob or an app that does a good chunk of the process...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, you'd still need to sideload the app

user226528
It seems @rahuldottech has reached the status of celebrity here. He is our version of Will Wheaton.

The bot keeps dying all the time. Why don't you guys put it on a Docker container and put a healthcheck on it and have it restart upon healtcheck failure?
Dockerize all the things!!!!
What, nail and hammer problem, you say? What is that?

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Eh, I've thought about setting up a watchdog before. Never really got around to it, simple as it might've been.

5:15 AM
We don't need more dogs, we've already got a quite competent one here!
Also I'm almost literally falling asleep. Bye, g'night'yall.

user226528
Finally! Freedom.

user226528
Well, at least freedom from not knowing what to do.

The star lord is back!

user226528
The who?

user226528
Do you mean the Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy?

5:24 AM
That was sorta the joke

user226528
I know. I am kidding you. ;)

user226528
I myself said above that you are our Will Wheaton.

user226528
@rahuldottech Do you happen to know what "Bikina" means?

@FleetCommand bikini?

user226528
@rahuldottech No.

user226528
5:27 AM
It is a Spanish word for a very sensitive and passionate person.

@FleetCommand then I don't

user226528
A very sensitive and passionate person who cannot afford trusting others from the genuine fear of being hurt.

user226528
Know anyone with that specification?

user226528
Hint: That was a rhetorical question. You do.

@FleetCommand I do
@FleetCommand uh...?

5:30 AM
@Bob yup
but I already sideload things.

@FleetCommand Are you trying to make a point here?
Because I don't get it

@rahuldottech he never actually makes a point

user226528
@rahuldottech But you said "I do". It indicates that you perfectly get it.

user226528
It is not complicated. Only some people fool around and pretend not getting it. You didn't.

I mean... Yeah I know someone who fits that description. But why did you randomly bring this up outta nowhere?

user226528
5:32 AM
Randomly? 😮 You are the Star Lord now. It isn't random.

I'm completely lost here

user226528
I see.

@FleetCommand can we try not to confuse people, accidentally or on purpose?

user226528
Yessir.

user226528
5:35 AM
@rahuldottech Alright, let me tell you something simpler: The Streisand effect. It is the phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely.

user226528
Example: Look at the top starred comment here.

@FleetCommand I get it, except that your example is all wrong

user226528
It is? Englighten me.

Wow, I love the star wall this morning...
This one?
Yes! The star wall is lovely!

5:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek pfft :P
@FleetCommand I didn't really send that message to get people to stop starring the other message about my virginity
It was just an expression of ridicule and exasperation

@rahuldottech well, that probably kinda should have been removed earlier

user226528
Was the consequence of it getting more publicized intended or unintended?

But we're mostly human, other than the ones who arn't.

@FleetCommand Neither? I mean, when I sent that message in all caps, I expected that to be starred too

user226528
Then, it was intended.

5:39 AM
If I really wanted the message off the star wall, I would have pinged @JourneymanGeek or a room owner

yup!
And we'd probably obliged if asked nicely

@FleetCommand Why are we going so in-depth with it? It's just a bunch of humorous messages which I don't mind...
@JourneymanGeek When have I ever not been nice? :P

@rahuldottech oh, in general!

Even if its @Bob being a toilet, or @FMLCat's problems with chmod

user226528
5:42 AM
@rahuldottech Just to talk about something simpler than "La Bikina". By the way, next time you have a girlfriend, you can sing her "Besame mucho".

@FleetCommand so... next week?

Q: How do I work out if a USB-C cable is safe to use?

Journeyman GeekThere's a lot of press about how some USB Type-C cables are dangerous - as I understand it, they have the wrong resistor, and that causes the device to draw too much power. On the other hand, I'd like to get cheap USB A to C cables for stashing around the house. I also currently have a probably ...

9:18 AM
if a midi is a "sequence", what is wav/mp3?
"wave"? "stream"?

this might be better suited to an English language chat room

morning

Also, midi's literally notation for computers
The computer basically goes "I need to play b# on the trumpet" looks it up and plays it
Wav or mp3 is sound recorded and stored. Its like comparing sheet music to a recording.

9:36 AM
I know the difference, I just don't know what terminology to use.

10:33 AM
I just can't sleep.
(and the coffee was not on the front porch - it's either stolen or held by a neighbor)

ugh, lot of that going around lately

I'm just tempted to start up a game on my desktop right now.

10:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek not sleeping, or people stealing coffee?

(I've never lost a package ;p)
I've had some delayed by quite a bit, split up, and even mailed to the wrong name
but lost, nupe.

11:13 AM
@bwDraco could you pop round to the neighbour and ask if they have it?

Hey guys
I'm going to an art colony/town for a few days for a photography trip
So I'll be offline till around the 31st

I will. Had a chat with Amazon asking for more details, they simply refunded me without my even asking for it and told me to accept it as complementary if I did find it.
If anything, I'll just order again.
This is how you drive repeat business.
@Hiccup .wav (linear PCM) and .mp3 files contain digital descriptions of the actual audio waveform, so they should sound the same (notwithstanding speaker/headphone differences) no matter what device you play it on.
MIDI is a description of music, specifying what notes to play, when, what instruments, etc. Depending on your software, what you hear when you play a MIDI file can vary dramatically.
MIDI playback relies on a synthesizer, which contains a set of virtual instruments and puts together the actual audio from those instruments based on the data in the MIDI file.
Windows comes with a simple audio synthesizer (Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth) providing basic MIDI playback capability, although it uses low-quality instruments that won't sound as good as, say, a synthesizer using a high-resolution, studio-recorded SoundFont bank. This stuff used to be done in hardware by Sound Blaster cards, but with increased CPU power, synthesis can be performed entirely in software today.
Start here:

So... one thing I fondly remember tinkering with when I was a little dragonling: Sound Blaster cards, SoundFont banks, MIDI, and audio synthesis.
A synthesizer (often abbreviated as synth, also spelled synthesiser) is an electronic musical instrument that generates electric signals that are converted to sound through instrument amplifiers and loudspeakers or headphones. Synthesizers may either imitate traditional musical instruments like piano, Hammond organ, flute, vocals; natural sounds like ocean waves, etc.; or generate novel electronic timbres. They are often played with a musical keyboard, but they can be controlled via a variety of other input devices, including music sequencers, instrument controllers, fingerboards, guitar synthesizers...
Some pros still use dedicated synth gear, though.
If you want MIDI audio to sound consistent across devices, you can use software to render the MIDI file to WAV, MP3, or other audio format. This can be done with VLC media player, but it takes some setup:

A: Generate mp3 from midi

mikek3332002You can convert midis to mp3s using a batch file and vlc. As it states in the VLC wiki to play midis in Windows you need version 1.1.0 as well as a sound font. This version is currently in testing so can be downloaded from http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/testing/ Once you have set u...

Anyone concerned about this answer? In my research to determine who the author was, I was able to determine two things. The first is the author is making other communities aware of the script. The second is the user is the author. They are also submitting, additional answers.
I am concerned they are just using our community to get people to use their script They also don't make it clear they wrote the script.

Bob
@Ramhound I take issue with your comment:
Please do not submit multiple instances of the same answer. If your answer to an existing question, answers this question, flag this question as a duplicate. — Ramhound 5 mins ago
One answer may apply to multiple questions that are not duplicates.
Have you ever solved a problem and wanted to share your solution with the world?

Do you find an answer that simply links to another answer helpful though?

Bob
I'm not really seeing a problem here, assuming that the script does answer the question asked.
@Ramhound Since it does answer the question, and it can stand on its own ignoring the link, it's perfectly fine.

If the user wants to provide the script, and a link to the script, and make the second answer it's own independent answer I am all for that.
Comment deleted

Bob
@Ramhound I think here it's important to evaluate:

1. Are the questions actually asking the exact same thing? No. So not dupes.
2. Do the answers each answer the specific question? Yes. So not NAA.
3. Do the answers promote something commercial? Or some larger product vs a quick script? No. So it's not really something that requires disclosure. On the contrary, if it were someone else's script they should probably say so.

11:44 AM
I was just worried the user was spamming us.

@Ramhound I looked at it and he seems to be tailoring the script to the answer for most part
its one of those pain in the arse edge cases - but I personally see no major issues. There's even a full copy of the script on one of the answers.
I think some of them got deleted

So here is my issue. Pastebin does not work for me. So the second answer, is a link-only answer, with a broken link and then a link to an existing answer. The answers should stand by themselves.
Does flagging a question require reputation? I thought anyone could do it?

errrrr
I think anyone can do it, but I don't remember

nope 15
wrong link
It's in the help center ;-)

ah
tbh I've never worried who can flag
maybe I should

Bob
11:56 AM
@Ramhound Then the suggestion could be to embed the script there too, but that could make keeping the answers up to date harder. TBH I've never really worried about linking to other SE posts.
Link-rot doesn't really apply to internal links.
@Ramhound Also FYI he seems to have embedded the script in the second answer.

@Bob - I always assume any answer is subject to be removed.

@Ramhound but any 10ker with a link can still find the information

That doesn't help somebody who can't see deleted answers. If they don't even know it existed, they can't ask us for it, only those that knew existed would remember.
Finding deleted answers by other people is a pain

Today, it is also found in Europe, Australia, North America, South America and some African countries. The wild water buffalo (Bubalus arnee) native to Southeast Asia is considered a different species, but most likely represents the ancestor of the domestic water buffalo. Two extant types of domestic water buffalo are recognized based on morphological and behavioural criteria – the river buffalo of South Asia and further west to the Balkans, Egypt, and Italy...

In a partnership with Strangeworks, Stack Exchange launched the Quantum Computing Q&A site at the SXSW Convergence Keynote in Austin, TX. During his Keynote, Strangeworks Founder and CEO William “whurley” Hurley discussed how quantum computing will forever change the computing landscape with advances in fields like artificial intelligence and next-gen cryptography. To say that quantum computing will fundamentally change how we think about computers is an understatement. …

@Ramhound @JourneymanGeek I also had reservations about the answer when it popped up up in an inappropriate question in review queue; I was a bit on the fence as to whether it crossed the link-only line but it seems for at least some the script has been edited into the answer now
Given the user took on board suggestions (deleted from inappropriate Q, edited to reflect content, included code) I think they're probably bona fide (or at least I would even more strongly err on the side of that than my default)
But a new user posting an offsite-linked script with what looked like a canned spiel tripped my spidey sense at first
Glad I'm not the only one to think that way at first, and that I took the time to respond etc and not simply flag-and-move-on

Hey, if you lost your mobile or your contacts, download FB data. They have them all.

it'll actually show up in Windows Update in April though, I'm sure - they have to prepare docs and support personnel and etc for it
so it'll be 1804 like I said ;-)

Soooo trying to get anywhere in the UK to anywhere else in the UK (if neither are London) by anything but a car is crazy expensive at Easter weekend... and probably other weekends too
Two student-y rail tickets from my end of the country to the other end (Cornwall) suggested 4 changes (plus a coach), 12 hours and around 550 quid :(

user226528
@allquixotic Actually, this time, they did exactly like the last time and the time befor that: They named it 1803.

Also, like previous times, companies on delayed branches won't get it till July.

7:59 PM
@DavidPostill Good thought, almost certainly! (did I mention the 13 quid car rental in here before? can't remember) The problem is the driving- 8-10 hours modulo Easter traffic there, similar back... End up driving for the same amount of time I would be spending there :-\

heh
get to coventry, you can sit on my roof as we drive down to brighton :/
while at the time it seemed like an awesome idea, i'm worried now how bad the traffic is gonna be

@FleetCommand Oh God, not another Windows update. I'll still trying to install the March cumulative update.
What a train wreck

@Michael what issues are you having with it?

user226528
Same here.

a lot of problems are resolved by doing a MCT sidegrade

user226528
8:10 PM
Installed on 31 machines. This one won't install.

user226528
@allquixotic MCT what?

@FleetCommand Media Creation Tool

When I perform a restart to finish the installation, after a couple of reboots, it says that the installation failed and it's undoing the update.

the mis-named tool that has the magic code to fix soooo many Windows problems without requiring a reinstall

user226528
@allquixotic Ah! Yeah. I get the ISOs directly.

8:11 PM
it's not about the ISOs - it's about the specific code the MCT runs to do the upgrade
it's something special, unique, and different than the ISO method or any other method (including Windows Update)

user226528
What specific code?

it has a neat way of replacing any broken shit with the latest working stuff, without uninstalling any programs or settings

user226528
Oh, you mean the dymanic updates?

@djsmiley2k :o Good luck!
I used Google Maps' estimate based on the day and time
See, if I could trade public holiday this weekend for two days off next weekend...

user226528
Media Creation Tool gets a Windows 10 ISO and then installs the dymanic updates on it.

8:13 PM
You can use the Media Creation Tool to repair an existing installation?

user226528
In a way. I won't be bothering myself with the new update until July. I am neither a Wikipedian now (so I won't be writing about it) nor have any interest in early adoption or what does not constitute a major update.

user226528
I have to focus on installing the March cumulative update.

user226528
...which reminds me: I have an image to service.

The funny thing is, the update installation history says the installation was successful.
But when I click "Check for updates", it appears again and tries to install again.

user226528
@Michael Try running the Windows Update troubleshooter then. It'll reset your distribution store and the problem will probably go away.

8:18 PM
I also tried downloading the full 700MB installation file and installing that, but that failed too.
@FleetCommand I tried that. Didn't help.

@Michael oh yes
even using the MCT to install the same version as you're currently on
it's fixed about a dozen problems I wasn't able to fix via sfc /scannow, dism, or Windows Update troubleshooting steps on like 12 different computers, 9 or 10 of them not even owned by me and with a random smattering of software on each
it's got the magic juice, I'm telling you

Dang.

@bertieb yup that'd be good
Is google maps thinking about the fact it's easter holiday tho?

GOOGLE KNOWS ALL AND SEES ALL
(!!s/GOOGLE/Facebook/ etc)
Actually, it seems not
So add Easter traffic to usual Friday traffic...

user226528
@allquixotic The magic juice just crashed.

8:29 PM
@FleetCommand well, nothing's perfect :P
programs historically have taken far too many liberties with breaking functionality in the OS and just going "Oh, nobody will notice because there's no way any program would attempt to do X" (and then everything tries to do X and it breaks)
so many Windows installations are seriously degenerate and are beyond redemption - the only way to upgrade them now is to wipe and reinstall
but if my company can do an in-place upgrade from 1511 to 1607 (which I just did on my laptop) without reinstalling, given all the crazy wonky-ass software we use, you should have no excuses

user226528
Actually, it crashed because I went out of Wi-Fi range.

user226528
It was in download phase.

interesting

user226528
Of course, I can resume the download using Get-BitsTransfer

user226528

11:25 PM
...and my coffee magically appeared on my doorstep.

Sounds like Dudley's idea of a booby trap.

Package was sealed FWIW.
Absolutely no evidence that it was tampered with.

Seems to be a lot of that going around :p

Oh! I thought you meant a cup of coffee.

...and Death Wish Coffee order placed, due to arrive Monday, so it should be on the front porch when we get home.
Oh come on.
Why isn't it oneboxing?

11:40 PM
@bwDraco I had that happen before... https maybe?
@FleetCommand Wow, they've refined that website quite a bit since I last visited.

No, that's not the issue. Chat has been having problems with oneboxing lately.

going on 1 month and 2 weeks since I placed the original order for my replacement modular PSU to molex cable for my extra RAID card PCI slot impeller fan

Heh... these SSDs on AliExpress seem to be sold per KG...
@allquixotic That sucks :|

@MichaelFrank I'll have 2.39 kg of SSDs, please!
watches in horror as a guy in a warehouse saws an SSD in half

Hell... It's probably worth it since apparently " Package Weight: 0.06kg (0.13lb.) "

11:51 PM
yeah but how many SSDs would you get if you order 1 kg

Many.
Although I'm not sure what I'd do with 16666 and a (sawed in) half SSDs...

with retail packaging it could weigh near 1 kg per SSD... I doubt they would be that cheap just loose
unless they're super old and useless

No, I imagine the per kilogram listing is in error. :)
Still, an interesting thought experiment.
