You have backups, right?
Speaking of which... took my first full system image of Astaroth yesterday.
Hm, I should probably do that for this laptop for ease of restoration
Problem is that system images are deprecated. I'd rather not have to use a third-party tool for backups.
00:52
(I was having issues keeping them consistant cause updating the remote copy was not working well. Ended up throwing some basic QOS settings on my router that seem to have done wonders)
01:09
Want to change your room lighting brightness because the drugs are wearing off and your mood is changing, but can't because your smart lighting hub is performing a firmware update. #FirstWorldProblems

1 hour later…
02:25
@allquixotic dude, I know you like backups so I backed up my backups
Ugh so tired

3 hours later…
05:35
@Bob games in a bit?
@Bob kinda got gntp send setup, though apparently the toasts arn't sticky
ah sorted
\o/
lol, I love that your use case is downloading ISOs
did you specifically select ISOs for an example (And actually download other things) or is that all you download with Qbittorrent?
@allquixotic livecds are good for testing cause they download very fast
and cough, Its entirely legal ;p
nice way to answer my question
05:50
also, erm, you don't expect me to share that I downloaded say "TVSHOW.YYYY.1080p.miscotherinformation.ext" do you? ;p
unless you use a VPN, you already do share that
well, true
there's "eh, no one's looking" and there "eh LOOK AT ME, I'm A PIRATE" ;p
here, I wanted to share it worked sooooo ;p
(also, I'm entirely serious about livecds downloading a lot faster)
and I think I've mentioned before I basically use this client cause of its rss feed support ;p
lol
@allquixotic proper answer on gitter ;p
06:25
Ugh... I've lost a whole window of tabs :|
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek there's an issue for that :P
Ah k
Works well enough for now I guess?
I need to get the matrix notification thing up too
But erf. I don't remember if I swapped it over to postgres yet and that and ttrss need to get updated.
Ah. That's what I did. Makes screenshots tricky tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek tricky?
Win prntscrn was what I did
Since it closed when I fired up the screenshot tool

2 minutes later...
9 minutes later...
09:04
lol
@ChatBotJohnCavil I love that one a little too much.
@djsmiley2k I added that one. Felt oddly approproate
ANd yes, I do believe it is
user226528
10:01
@JourneymanGeek I haven't seen a more useless backup app than Bvckup. Unidirectional file synchronization without compression, hashing, integrity check or recovery record...
@FleetCommand oddly enough, that's exactly what I need here
@FMLCat dont do drugs
user226528
@JourneymanGeek How do you mitigate potential data corruption? Do you have separate hashing app in place?
don't update firmware on on drugs
user226528
LOL
10:04
@FleetCommand haven't had issues so far, and its literally meant to sync backups of my backups
user226528
People have data corruption issue only once: Before committing suicide because of it.
user226528
I intend to prevent that.
in theory I can verify my (important) backups fairly trivially, since they're well... disk images
user226528
Great. So you do have an integrity checking measure in place. Good for you.
so, current backup model is system level images to a smb share or a local HDD.
I'm using bvckup up sync between 3 locations with different filesets on them
user226528
10:07
Also, I am a little outdated in the profanity front. (I don't use them either.) At what point it is okay to call someone a "sick f***" and expect not to get flagged for it? (My answer is "never", of course.)
(music's ... eh, it would just be a pain in the rear to rebuild it)
@FleetCommand never.
user226528
GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!
If you find someone needs to be called a sick **** you should be talking with flags
user226528
@JourneymanGeek Then I assume it is okay to bitch about the moderator that rejected the flag, right?
hmm
see, that's a leading question
user226528
10:08
Not here of course.
See, I literally have no context whatsoever.
user226528
Okay. Let's move on.
user226528
So, CocoonJS. It's neat, isn't it? (That's a trick question.)
10:23
@FleetCommand also in theory, assuming the original isn't compromised - it does delta copies, which, well, implicitly anyway checks for consistancy before/during a backup run
user226528
Acronis True Image already tricked me once with the promise of such a thing.
@FleetCommand hypothetically speaking...
I'd need my PC to die I'm backing up to die. Then the copy get corrupted. Then the second copy I made off the same master copy die. (And only the copies of the backups are done with bvckup)
I'm not aiming for bullet proof - I'm aiming for "make it unlikely"
user226528
Sure. Sure. I already said you've got the right tool.
eh. Its not about the tool, its about the system as a whole
.... joy
10:41
THIS EPISODE OF REPLY ALL IS SO WEIRD: gimletmedia.com/reply-all/116-the-process#episode-player (sortaaaaa NSFW)
apparently the building I have an interview at tomorrow is so new... its a construction site on google maps and streetview
user226528
Huh. I saw this in a movie once. The guy said the exact same thing. Only the interview was really in a construction site. That's good news for you though: Things that happen in the movies almost never happen in the real life.
user226528
Waterproof computer!
Bob
Bob
11:17
@FleetCommand See, IMO, the issue is calling anyone anything. Profanity isn't the issue here. Attacking another user is.
@FleetCommand No.
> Name-calling. Focus on the post, not the person.
@FleetCommand Your last declined flags are dated Jun 29 '17. What exactly is your issue?
I think it was elsewhere (another SE site), from what he said
Also, morning all o/
@bertieb He doesn't say what site ... or that it was not SU
He said "not here" which implies it was not a flag in RA
Ah yeah, I took that to mean another SE site, could be either
11:35
Note: mods does sometimes make mistakes. Calling them "sick ****" is not a constructive way to have a discussion addressing this, or any other topic. It is likely to earn the complainant a suspension for violating "Be Nice"
When users receive a mod message for violating "Be Nice" and respond with more abuse we usually laugh hysterically respond with a longer suspension ...
aye
I think he flagged someone for calling someone else that, and his flag was rejected
Buuut again I shouldn't be speaking for other folks :P
Was was just my impression from the scrollback, given his reaction etc
11:52
@DavidPostill or nuke it.
@bertieb and that's why it's a bit of a trap.

1 hour later…
user226528
13:21
@DavidPostill Re messages 42922577 and 42922674. The target of that certain piece of profanity was not a mod. And the rejected flag isn't mine; I just witnessed it. And wasn't it you who said "never dig up a drama after it is ended?" So, what you doing digging one up? Journeyman Geek's answer was totally conclusive.
user226528
If you want to know what's the deal here it is: Where I grew up, a person who uses such extreme instances of profanity is stripped of all rights. (Not officially, but unofficial stuff are sometimes more scary.) I won't be surprised if the murderer or such a person is not prosecuted.
"And wasn't it you who said "never dig up a drama after it is ended?" I don't recall ever saying that.
user226528
@DavidPostill Then search it! We keep records for a reason.
user226528
Okay, I came here for a computing reason... I forgot. Grrr.
@FleetCommand If you want to make a claim you should substantiate it.
@FleetCommand Where you grew up is not really relevant. And what has murder got to with anything? The drama is coming from you ... ;)
13:32

Q: Upgrading My Personal PC

JoshuaHello i bought this pc in 2017 September expecting high performance in basic FPS games such as CS:GO but i misinterpreted the specs i was provided with. I only achieve 100 fps in a CS:GO competitive and want to raise this significantly Is anybody able to recommend parts i should replace to be abl...

"Only 100FPS"
@FleetCommand so, the things with flags is, someone needs to take a look, and go "yanno, this is the right thing". Ideally, we need to be pretty much perfect but we arn't. But to be good enough, we need to look at context and decide on the best course of action.
Does the person need a warning? A suspension? Is this guy a troll who keeps coming back?
and that's why asking "what'll I do" is .... kinda impossible to answer.
also, I think the rule I tend to use is "sort it out in the family" or "what happens in vegas stays in vegas"
user226528
@DavidPostill Found it. Message from you on 6 April 2017, 10:26 AM UTC. It reads: "Please don't bring up past non-dramas." Next message reads: "Anything you need to know will either be said in the room or privately if necessary." Complementary message reads: "the general policy here is we deal with it, and it passes on."
@FleetCommand that sounds suspiciously like my wording at the last bit.
user226528
So, yeah. I was wrong. Non-dramas.
and yes, as far as root access is concerned, that's how we typically prefer to deal with things.
user226528
And I was wrong again, David didn't say it. Journeyman Geek said.
user226528
13:36
But again, I seem to have been right a great deal: I asked "deal with what" and the response was "pretty much anything". So, dramas, non-dramas. We move on.
yanno? I just realised I can still cast (some) flags ;p
@FleetCommand general policy here has been like that for years.
and its worked very well
user226528
Clearly.
user226528
Since I came here to ask a computing question and the deviation made me forget, I'd say you are dead right.
user226528
Alright. Let's move on.
13:51
@FleetCommand See the word "non" in there? non-dramas are the opposite of dramas :)
well, we try to turn our dramas into non dramas.
I still want to know how profanity leads to murder ...
user226528
Well, try reading Harry Potter.
@FleetCommand And the connection to where you grew up is? Are you a fictional harry potter character? ;)
user226528
LOL
user226528
14:00
I like you. Good mod, having a sense of humor, sometimes childish, and a slight resemblance to Jason Statham.
user226528
No.
user226528
But, boy, Voldemort would be in serious trouble if he somehow ended up in Final Fantasy world.
user226528
I mean he kills someone and the next day, he sees that person alive and well, walking down the street.
@FleetCommand I refer you to one of my standard comments
> I am neither psychic nor a mind reader and I don't like guessing games.
user226528
14:04
Well, when I tell you "try reading Harry Potter", it is probably because the answer would probably take as long as a book like Harry Potter.
user226528
And there is no cheating it.
Well I've read most of them (a long time ago) and I still don't get your point.
user226528
-"Hey, I wanna learn C#."
-"Try reading C# for Dummies."
-"I am neither psychic nor a mind reader and I don't like guessing games."
-"Irrelevant. Reading C# for Dummies is what it takes to know C#."
user226528
The point is that sometimes profanity can lead to murder. What it takes to know how is either reading the boring court cases, or luckily for you, reading Harry Potter, which is actually fun.
user226528
And then, since you live in United Kingdom, there is a difference between murder and manslaughter. Provocation can sometimes change murder into manslaughter and profanity's purpose is provocation.
14:09
not quite seeing where this is headed....
Hmm. I grew up somewhere / In that location someone who swears is stripped of all rights / The murderer is not prosecuted / Explained somewhere in a Harry Potter novel.
Does not compute
ooh, he's a time traveller from... Demolition man!
user226528
Okay, everything you said up to "does not compute" was exactly what I meant.
user226528
So, communication successful; message delivery failed.
lol. communication failed as I don't understand the message ...
user226528
14:12
Alright, FleetCommand triggering E_Exception_Argument_Not_Strong_Enough.
Bob
Bob
why is it so hard to find a SATA power extension cable
user226528
God, you said it!
user226528
The other day, I had to use two conversion cables instead.
user226528
I bought a Molex connector extension cable and a SATA power adapter.
Bob
Bob
@FleetCommand The PSU I'm working with doesn't have a molex (4-pin/peripheral) connector
It's one of those Dell PSUs :\
14:17
eww
I've worked with those
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill if they sold them here...
the only things I can find are those dodgy splitters, 20cm
user226528
> No sellers are currently delivering this item to the United States.
user226528
I hope you are not in U.S.
Bob
Bob
AU
but yea, I'll probably just have to daisy-chain splitters
ugh
the last splitter I tried was so bad it couldn't reliably deliver power to a single drive
user226528
14:19
This is how I did it:
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill I'd sooner buy a new PSU than pay that much for a cable :P (which also includes a data connection I won't need)
a new PSU probably isn't the worst idea either
pretty sure there's a cheapo-probably-won't-explode for ~$40
@Bob the new PSU probably will be a lot less painful
Bob
Bob
14:22
@DavidPostill ya, that's too short :P
I appreciate you looking but I'm reasonably sure I'm chasing a unicorn here
@JourneymanGeek until it burns the house down, I guess
@Bob ehhh
Bob
Bob
I wonder what the cheapest PSU I can get is
I've never had that happen
shocked? yes. Had one blow up, yes.
I think the cheapest one I saw here's an andyson ;p
but but
Bob
Bob
14:24
that sounds like a very bad idea
@Bob shrug you haven't specified how long the cable needs to be ...
Bob

the only things I can find are those dodgy splitters, 20cm
:P
@JourneymanGeek I'm almost tempted to buy one just to open it up
lol
@Bob to be honest, the shitty ones look better than the ones I used to get
yanno those oldschool grey tetnus traps
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek at least those didn't waste money on paint :P
Bob
Bob
14:27
@DavidPostill tbh it was more a gripe over the difficulty
or ventilation for the magic smoke to escape quickly
Bob
Bob
A Corsair-branded (granted, dodgy still) PSU can be had for $42
That's ... acceptable
user226528
Dodgy, because it avoids being looked at.
Bob

@JourneymanGeek but... it costs more! o.O

Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek also it doesn't really look dodgy yet

Ooooh! This one looks like one of those things I that spend one hour thinking I definitely want: megabuy.com.au/corsair-cc-9011052-ww-spec-03-case-p551315.html
And if you are too broke to spend $11 I give up.
@DavidPostill or whether its worth the effort
Bob
Bob
14:32
@DavidPostill lol, that might actually be an option
today's carp question:

@FleetCommand brctl says otherwise
user226528
We have network bridges and bridged networks!
user226528
Plural.
Bob

@JourneymanGeek Here's a proper old PSU:
user226528
14:36
@Bob Fine, I submit to the wisdom of brctl
@FleetCommand I suspect he is referring to a bridged router.
@Bob I have one of these in my spares box I think coolermaster.com/powersupply/elite-power/elite-power-400w
@Bob You really have that many failed PSUs? :)

dear lord
slashdot is all a hulu about programmers
first it's junior programming jobs don't exist
then it's 'why isn't basic on every phone/tablet'
then it's 'silicon valley programmers can't find love'
lul
/. ain't what it used to be
17:42
well, yeah that too
then it's 'programming is too hard'
it's more approachable now than ever before
@bertieb /. not ./

you can write working code, IN YOUR BROWSER.
lol, no it's not
@rahuldottech Cheers, but gimme time to edit, man :P
Maybe the stupid 'everyone needs to be a programmer' of the last 5 years, has already dried up all the junior programming jobs? XD
17:44
Working on command line my brain autocompletes a dot and a slash to the more commonly used one :P
hehe
that fatboyslim song that goes 'slashdotdashdotdashdotcom' or whatever
I always used to hear it and start thinking (in the club) "is it ./ or /.?"
I would literally be like:
hmmm
I need a plugin for the google image view button :D
right click → open image in new tab?
it isn't a link
@djsmiley2k there is one
Doesn't need to be a link, any <img ..> will do

it's not img either
there's no url any more
go check

ty @rahuldottech
Is this only for some images?
a github as well is nice
@bertieb nope
did u miss the news
they changed it because getty images were kicking off about copyright
Because for a random* selection of images in GIS open image in new tab still works for me
17:53
so now the 'view image' button in image search is gone
*(not random)
hmmm ok let me try that
I did not miss the news :P
yesterday, by bertieb
I was a bit confused by why Google image search had changed earlier today, didn't realise it was to appease Getty
ah hah, nice
@bertieb amusing fact, more people will now use google image search, who had never even heard of it before
Ah, that reaction jpg you say
17:55
Or never realised what it did
There are people who don't know about GIS?!?!11one!
(I mean, I know there are, there are people who use Yahoo to search for Google and whatnot)
lol
So yeah, well played getty, you idiots.
But yeah, I'm surpised Google caved on that one
@bertieb Bing's number one search is "Google"
My point exactly
Although I reckon that's quite possibly a holdover from when Ballmer was still CEO
17:56
@rahuldottech The wonders of being a address bar search engine, on the worlds largest browser that comes preinstalled on the worlds largest installed base O/S eh?
And since we're one the subject we can't have a mention of him without any one of the fun videos

*cough*
@bertieb LMAO
Or, the remix, natch
To be fair to Steve Ballmer, I think he was pretty self-aware of these things
Witness
But yeah, I reckon it's all an attempt to get him to throw another chair
@rahuldottech take the whole thing with a pinch of salt, in context
on preinstalled O/S's
in the lifetime of computing, how many devices has windows been installed on?
I think it likely still outstrips everything else, even android and apple together maybe
@djsmiley2k Eleventy muh, billion?

Gore was Bill Clinton's running mate in their successful campaign in 1992, and the pair was re-elected in 1996. Near the end of Clinton's second term, Gore was selected as the Democratic nominee for the 2000 presidential election but did not win the election. After his term as vice-president ended in 2001, Gore remained prominent as an author and environmental activist, whose work in climate change activism earned him (jointly...
