Someone's making 10GbE Thunderbolt adapters for <$300
Finally giving my laptop a method to connect to my server at >1G
Saw that earlier today. Problem is, Thunderbolt is rarely found on desktop motherboards.
And not a lot of laptops have it, either.
Course I could just chuck a TB3 adapter in my server, and run peer-to-peer TB3 10GbE for cheaper, but that makes it sorta hard to connect up my desktop if/when I finally get that set up again
It's mostly limited to premium laptops.
Jul 20 '17 at 22:54, by bwDraco
It's entirely technically possible, but the need for Thunderbolt is less acute on desktop platforms where you have access to the internal PCIe expansion bus.
01:14
@bwDraco ehh. it feels strange to have a high end option that's not found on desktops
...well, we have internal 10GbE PCIe cards.
Wonder if I could just get a two-port TB3 adapter for my server, and just have two P2P connections to my server and finally have some use for all these Thunderbolt ports that just sit around doing nothing the rest of the time
When you have access to the internal PCIe bus, there's no point implementing Thunderbolt for most desktop use cases, SFF systems excepted.
But then a >5m TB3 cable to go from my desktop to my server will probably cost as much as a 10GbE card.
Maybe twice as much if I buy it from Apple -_-
Huh. £39 for a 0.8m Apple TB3 cable... £39 for a 2m Apple TB3 cable
That's... a surprisingly non-rip-off price for the latter
Bob
Bob
why are you buying Apple-branded cables?
01:17
@Bob Just poking about on Apple's website for the lolz, to see how much of a rip-off they are
I'd expected Monster Cable prices
Oddly a Belkin 2m TB3 cable is £65 vs £39 for Apple's on on their website
Going up to 5.5m costs £149.95... eurgh
The only Apple-branded device in this house is an mDP to VGA adapter.

like for a big hard drive?
@JourneymanGeek For a 3.5" HDD, yes.

@FMLCat precisely
ah. I was like "why the hell does @FMLCat need a floppy drive caddy"
01:50
@FMLCat Sadly, we don't have strawberry ice cream cones here in the US (at least not under our equivalent brand, Good Humor).
@bwDraco Dude. CORNETTOS.
(Good Humor King Cones rarely get this cheap (~$1.50 for 4ct) in any local supermarket, even after accounting for their being slightly larger)
@JourneymanGeek Cornetto is not a US brand. We have Good Humor here.

@bwDraco You probably at least have Drumsticks

Bob
Bob
those are probably more popular here than Cornetto anyway :P
Yes, but we don't usually see Drumsticks in this flavor, either.
@Bob heh, we tend to get the fancy stuff these days. There's a local brand called udders with offbeat flavours...
peanutbutter, horlicks....
now I'm wondering if americans know what milo is.
I think we still have some on hand...
Heck, even Ovaltine is rarely found here.
Hmm...
Apparently, Milo is sold directly in the US market but it's not particularly common here.
The main brand of powdered milk beverage here is actually Nesquik.
FWIW, these are more of a niche product in the US than in most places.
(no VAT on most food)
Compared to other countries, our tax system just feels... weird. There's no federal-level consumption tax on most items, and any sales taxes are levied by the state and city. Here in New York City, it's 8.875%.
Michigan experimented with a VAT at one point in an attempt to replace several other taxes, but this proved unpopular.
02:13
The nice thing and the bad thing with vat is its fairly friction free
(so tempting for governments to raise, since "its just taxing spending, and its easy to lower if we want to increase comsumption")
I think we've gone from 3 to 7 %
BUT we have very low personal taxes

Well, I've got yet more cleaning up to do tomorrow. It's Chinese New Year's Eve.
All work will stop and cleaning equipment put away at 11 pm local time.
Consolidated lots of odds and ends in my bedroom. Now I gotta vacuum the room, remove dust, and do some more tidying up.
you guys can't clean over CNY right?
Not into Chinese New Year. As for me, work began on the 28th.
We're not superstitious, but we do try to uphold the traditions.
...it's a bit confusing here. By 28th, I meant the 28th day of month 12 on the lunar calendar, or February 12.

!!/wiki Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival (simplified Chinese: 春节; traditional Chinese: 春節; pinyin: Chūn Jié) in modern China, often called the Lunar New Year in Asia, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 Jan and 20 Feb. In 2017, the first day of the Lunar New Year was on Saturday, 28 January, initiating the year of the...
> On the days immediately before the New Year celebration, Chinese families give their homes a thorough cleaning. There is a Cantonese saying "Wash away the dirt on nin ya baat" [年廿八,洗邋遢], but the practice is not restricted to nin ya baat (the 28th day of month 12). It is believed the cleaning sweeps away the bad luck of the preceding year and makes their homes ready for good luck. Brooms and dust pans are put away on the first day so that the newly arrived good luck cannot be swept away.
This has been the largest, most comprehensive cleanup I've gone through since we moved into this house.
We don't follow the traditions that closely, but this is one thing I do take seriously.

Anyway, I get the joke.
@bwDraco good question - if it remains as a profitable venture, it makes more sense to tape out more efficient, process specific cards...
if it does not, you're going to get high end, used card flooding the market at some point.
which is bad,
you might have that happen anyway
A graphics card buyback program can stem the tide, allowing graphics card manufacturers to make a bit of money back by refurbishing and selling the cards through official retail channels.
ehh.
As a gamer and PC builder? I think the two best options are cheap ASICs or the cryptocurrency market imploding.
08:34
Unfortunately, they can't pay top dollar this way, which could limit the number of potential sellers. Perhaps higher rates for those who are selling large numbers of cards would help.
erm, those guys are the problem
(it's mainly the fans that would probably be replaced on a refurb card, and fans are cheap in bulk)
@bwDraco dosen't really make business sense. they'd still need to test and recertify the cards

@djsmiley2k Ironically, the way I see it is it's great for gamers and not particularly useful for "pro" work
@FMLCat Nod. It's just the kind of things you'd expect from the max performance setting anyway.... so why not just fix that?
'This goes to 11'
Admittedly I don't do a huge deal of pro work like CAD, FEMS or Photoshop, but I'm perfectly used to and don't really care at all about micro (or macro) stuttering when doing that sorta stuff
Heck I'm used to FEMS tasks taking hours and Photoshop stuttering all the time cause I'm out of RAM, but that was before I made the leap from 8GB => 32GB
It's only gaming where micro-stutters and utmost performance makes any difference to me
13:43
nod
@djsmiley2k Tbh I didn't even know about max performance mode till now
the only other time i can imagine it making a difference, is working with live media
but most of that is gamers too ;D
I once set up my own cluster at home using four old laptops to run HFSS tasks across 8 different CPU cores... back before 6-12 CPU cores in a single socket were cough "affordable" cough
hmmm
I setup ~30 computers in our class at college, to be a render farm for me on blinc or blink, or whatever it was called
most of them crashed and overheated, but it was awesome to see
Well yeah, you can always cheat and use work PCs >_>
I mean my job at one point was to manage the supercomputing cluster so ...
We did also have a test project at one point to pool all the idle classroom PCs into a Hadoop cluster but never really made it mostly because politics
My other job at one point was to build cloud-bursting into our local supercompute cluster so it can automagically expand to theoretically unlimited cores via EC2 or Azure when the local resources were full... By which point compute jobs that were taxing on 8 CPU cores were kinda below my pay grade :-P
When someone came up with a job that needed 8 hundred cores, that's when I started getting excited
13:53
0_0
now tht sounds fun
Not that I could do anything useful there really
other than maybe build some monitoring around it
@FMLCat when I did, we actually used older machines for PS, and stuff like rendering probably isn't realtime. Totally a gaming feature ;p
@JourneymanGeek Exactly... most taxing jobs I've found that require "ultimate performance" weren't really real-time.
maybe music production but that dosen't need a ton of processor power
its more IO hungry and even then....
Mind you, we did have a 40Gb/s nanosecond latency network fabric for our cluster for y'know, ensuring absolutely minimal latency but I still wouldn't have cared about microstutter when everything runs remotely via SSH
13:56
My point is, can you think of any reason why they add an 'extra' mode, rather than just make these changes to the 'Max Performance' mode?
Music production does indeed require real time low latency but as you say, isn't particularly CPU hungry... I managed that just fine on an Athlon 64
got a job interview monday. I actually have no idea who the client is, only that its a 6 month contract
@djsmiley2k This mode goes to 11
I already said that :P
Exactly why I repeated it :-P
Guess it'll be useful for "pro" hardware benchmarking as well
