i've been drinking beer, does that count? ;)

If we change from a monarchy, they'd have to change all our money again. :|

Bob
lol, that's a good point

aren't you changing your flag?

Bob
we just started printing a new note design

No, we firmly did not want to change flags.
Even when they put the design that was left out of the pick back in.
Also, Laser Kiwi was not an option.

12:01 AM
lol

The Red Peak flag (also called First to the Light) is a proposed New Zealand flag that appeared as one of five options for voters to consider in the 2015–16 flag referendums. Designed by Aaron Dustin in 2015, Red Peak appeared on the government's official longlist of 40 alternative flag designs before failing a final culling of the field on 1 September 2015 to four options. After public disappointment with the official four-flag shortlist, a social media campaign was launched on 2 September that revived the flag's prospects and captured the attention of leading parliamentary figures both in...

Righty, past my bedtime as it's exam o'clock soon, nn all o/

i remember hearing ages ago that there was a movement to get NZ converted to a state of australia
that is a shit design
it doesn't even have the fracking kiwi or frodo on it

It also makes a swastika if you rotate it around one of the corners

@FMLCat i thought all kiwifruits were staunch republicians (source)

Damn lag

also quick question of a serious and personal nature (based on the fact that is valentines day tomorrrow). is NZ in the latest six nations?

Isn't Six Nations a UK thing?

idk

12:05 AM
Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England... France... ???

egg chasing does not consume enough petrol to retain my interest

Ahh, here we go:
The Six Nations Championship is an annual international rugby union competition between the teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

ah
this will explain the reason that my GF has barely mentioned egg chasing
she does want to go to japan for the world cup though
dude, seriously, i've even made fracking notes on the silly egg chasing
wasted brownie points
i should claim them back from the NZ government or something

12:21 AM
It's a bit racist to assume all new zealanders must be egg chasers don't you think?

12:42 AM
shrugs
i admit some of them might be ring chasers.... ;)

wait
egg chasing?

Phew

how is the soberity holding up btw?

@Burgi I think we're made a case for being "tired and emotional" not meaning an instakick ;p

C'mon man... why you gotta say that the day before Valentine's Day?

Oops.
(Newegg sold Raven Ridge APUs above MSRP, is refunding customers the difference)

Bob
2:53 AM
...eh
if people bought at that price, they were willing to pay it
there's absolutely nothing wrong here
apart from PR, perhaps

also those sort of refunds are pretty standard, if say, there's a price drop

Bob
@JourneymanGeek not really, depends a lot on the store

Yeah. Also, once again, Newegg's first shipment of Ryzen 5 2400G processors sold out within hours of launch.

@Bob I mean, its not a huge deal

Best Buy will honor the lower price if it drops during the return window.
B&H does, too.
I'm pretty sure a lot of other stores do similar price adjustments.

Bob
2:58 AM
> once again
though I do wonder what the actual # is

FWIW, I'm not surprised they sold out even at $190. It's the fastest desktop single-chip CPU+GPU processor they've ever made.

well, I suspect initial launches are pretty small

Bob
"sold out" could mean anywhere from "they had 1 in stock and it was sold out" to "they had 10,000 in stock and sold out" to "they had 10,000,000 in stock and sold out"
each of which tells a different story

AMD has been manufacturing Raven Ridge chips for mobile for the past several months.

Bob
I'm more curious to know how many were sold, if you're talking popularity
If you're talking inability to buy one, then ... yea, it's sold out
@bwDraco Then what's their production rate? And how many of those went to OEMs?

3:02 AM
It's back in stock now. I suspect it wasn't really sold out; instead, Newegg was probably holding back some stock to give later buyers a fair shot at getting one.
@Bob I think the initial production was fairly low, with a gradual ramp-up. There's only one OEM currently shipping a Ryzen APU.

Bob
I'm expecting a nontrivial number but not anything particularly high for a relatively untested chip (read: they weren't sure of demand so probably erred on the side of lacking supply)

(though retail availability of this one model of laptop was actually quite good; quite a few Best Buy stores had display units)

Bob
It's also not necessarily under the manufacturer's control.
Even if the manufacturer thinks it'll do well, if the retailer thinks it won't then they won't have much in stock.
So ... ya ... if talking popularity then 'sold out' could mean just about anything.
"Exceeds expectations" perhaps, for the HP fans :P

I'm not sure how many HP ENVY x360 15z units were sold. Accurate sales numbers are very hard to get.
(the "z" in "15z" is the important part - this designates an AMD system in HP nomenclature; Intel systems are designated "t" here)
...though it does not look like it's isolated to Newegg. Amazon is backordered on the Ryzen 5 2400G: amazon.com/AMD-YD2400C5FBBOX-Processor-Radeon-Graphics/dp/…
> In stock on February 16, 2018.

Bob
@bwDraco yea that'll be because Amazon didn't stock enough. They've obviously got enough of them stashed in a warehouse somewhere.

3:11 AM
It seems like AMD has not shipped all of their supply to retailers just yet.

Bob

@JourneymanGeek bleh. wouldn't that only work with specific providers, then?
@JourneymanGeek wait where does it say that?

@Bob one moment! Out of band sources
I did a bunch of research today on removing OpenID support on Stack Overflow (and our entire network). After seeing the data, I'm convinced it's the right path forward. More talking tomorrow.

thinking about that for a second, the irony is the fan noise would probably ruin said listening experience

> QNAP1 was found to serve up music with a similar level of rhythmic drive and image soundstaging as a good CD transport playing directly into our system's DAC. If anything, there was perceptibly more 'drive', in the sense of bass euphony and articulation, but this came with increased level which made the sound a tad bass heavy.

QNAP2 rendered the same song more tunefully. It was more organic and made more sense, the lines of melody and rhythm cooperating better. As well as showing better individual instrument distinction, the whole piece sounded tidier, tonally less messy without the roug

> That hint of glaze on QNAP1 also showed an impaired subjective noise floor elsewhere. In hi-fi parlance, QNAP2 had the blacker silences and deeper spaces between notes. If anything, this track highlighted a fundamental shift in timbre between the storage sources. This wasn't the gentle tweak of a DAC's digital filter option; we felt it was more akin to changing loudspeakers. System sound was improved as if the DAC itself had been upgraded, say from a £500 to a £2000 model.

this... kinda passes into the sort of thinking that suggests music sounds better when you're hanging upside down over a pit of spikes...

I think someone broke a thermometer
pretty sure it wasn't that hot...

I have a question that is (I think) too vague for the site, but pretty simple if anyone has had experience:
I'm considering getting a 4K monitor. I have checked and I know my MacBook Pro will support 4K, and I'm also certain my work laptop won't.
What I'm wondering is, assuming the cables can hook up at all, can the 4K monitor be used with my work laptop more or less as though it were a standard definition 1920x1080 screen?
(With lower resolution, obviously, but no other bad effects?)
Or should I just downgrade my expectations and get a lower-res monitor that my work laptop can fully utilize, even though it's below the capabilities of my MBP?

Bob
@Wildcard depends on the monitor but I think most are happy to stretch
@Wildcard what is this laptop?
would have to be pretty old...

@Bob well, I have a PoS right now, but I'm hoping for an upgrade soon.
The one I have is VGA only...speaking of which, is it even possibly to turn VGA output from a laptop into HDMI input for a screen? :D

Bob
@Wildcard uhhhh. you'd need an active converter

(I have an HP ProBook 6470b.)

Bob
7:56 AM
not cheap
if you had at least HDMI out it'd be easier

@Bob yeah, nope. Actually, I don't even know what year this laptop is, but it's at best a 2015 model. Probably 2013 or earlier. VGA only.
But, I am requesting a hardware upgrade...which I have decent hopes of getting. :)
Pretty sure the upgrade won't give me a laptop that supports 4K, but I'm hoping I'll have HDMI output, or at least DVI.
I don't suppose DVI output can be converted to HDMI input without an active converter, either?
Or can it?
@Bob this is really good news, anyway. So then when I get approved for the laptop upgrade, then I may spring for the 4K monitor and start using it right away for my MBP. That would be nice. :)
@Bob Actually, the price on amazon.com/GANA-Converter-monitors-displayers-Computer/dp/… doesn't look too bad. (I mean, by comparison with a 4K monitor.) Is that the range you were thinking of when you said "not cheap"?

Bob
@Wildcard VGA only is probably older than that
2012 apparently... I'd still have expected HDMI by then

@Bob Yep, 2012 it is, judging from the pictures in this review (which match my laptop exactly): notebookcheck.net/Review-HP-ProBook-6470b-Notebook.86802.0.html

Bob
@Wildcard DVI just needs a passive adapter
@Wildcard laptops don't have DVI out. The decent ones will have DP out. The poorer ones will have HDMI out.
@Wildcard ... if it actually works, that's cheaper than I expeced

@Wildcard yes
Well kinda
most 4k monitors would be HDMI and DP
@Bob ugh, the temp gig I was mentiioning might be 3 months, not 6
:(

Bob
8:10 AM
:\
3 is better than none, no?

on the other hand, I suppose its "datacentre experience" and its a pretty big client
yup
(I have one that does 1080p with VGA and 4k over HDMI 2.0 and DP but its a slightly strange one)

@Bob the reviews look convincing enough to try it for $10. I'll give it a go. (Seems all the bad reviews give no details at all, leaving me to wonder whether those people thought it was HDMI to VGA rather than the reverse. The good reviews are detailed.)

(@Wildcard I have one that does 1080p with VGA and 4k over HDMI 2.0 and DP but its a slightly strange one). 4k on older machines... just isn't worth it. Definately would want an active converter

@JourneymanGeek right. For the work computer, I just care about the SIZE of the monitor, not the resolution so much. The built-in screen is horribly, annoyingly tiny and hard to get work done on. I'd be happy with a Dell P2717H if I already had one (I have the 24 inch model of the same exact thing at work), but I don't want to spring for that much for a monitor that's lower res than my personal MBP.

ah!
I'm running a P2715Q as my main one
its lovely

8:15 AM
Yeah, they're nice. Just, I would never have any reason to use it with my personal computer. So it would feel like a silly purchase.

hah.
I use it for silly things. I even have a post about it here.

Bob
@Wildcard As I said, most monitors are fine stretching lower-res input.
Can't remember one that isn't, actually.

I'd rather spend ~$550 and get a really nice monitor than spend ~$280 and get a mediumly good monitor. :)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.O wasn't it P2715Q?

@Bob Awesome. In that case I'll just jump, whether I can get a work laptop upgrade or not.

8:16 AM
er, yes

@Bob annnnnnnnnnd local laws.

Bob
<== same primary monitor as @JourneymanGeek ... I think
@Wildcard I'd test for you but unfortunately IIRC Win10 tries to use native monitor res even if you set it lower in settings
there was some way around it...

I'd test if I had an adaptor
I could even dig up a period appropriate system

@Bob well, fortunately for me, I'm using Windows 7 on my work laptop. Although if it gets upgraded, who knows....
@Bob yeah, I just thought I'd better check, since I have zero experience with 4K.
Like when HDMI first came on the scene and I had no idea that it could also carry sound. :D

Bob
Yea... changing it in Settings still sends 3840x2160 over the wire
But changing it in Display Adapter (driver) properties sends 1920x1080 over the wire
so I can confirm the P2715Q is happy stretching a 1080p signal over mDP
looks terrible, but that's probably just my DPI scaling still at 150% :P
but it does mean subpixel rendering doesn't work so well

8:21 AM
@Bob How can you tell?

Bob
@Wildcard monitor settings tells me :P

@Bob Sorry, what does "subpixel rendering" mean? That's not like anti-aliasing...?
@Bob :P

Bob
bottom left
ClearType is Microsoft's implementation of subpixel rendering technology in rendering text in a font system. ClearType attempts to improve the appearance of text on certain types of computer display screens by sacrificing color fidelity for additional intensity variation. This trade-off is asserted to work well on LCD flat panel monitors. ClearType was first announced at the November 1998 COMDEX exhibition. The technology was first introduced in software in January 2000 as an always-on feature of Microsoft Reader, which was released to the public in August 2000. ClearType was significantly changed...

@Bob Thanks!
@Bob Ooh, interesting. That was one of the two 4K monitors I was looking at! Didn't realize at first (I think you edited in the Q in your first message).
@Bob The ones I was (am) considering, are the P2715Q, and the U2718Q.
It's hard to really get a sense of what's different between them.

@bwDraco that took awhile to fix :/

8:26 AM
@Wildcard thinner bezels and wider dynamic range
the U2718Q is newer ;p

Cool. So, no hard spec differences like different ports or one rotates and one doesn't?

err,
ports look the same

I like thin bezels, anyway. ;)

the P and U line both have dell's insanely flexible mounts
I actually think the P2715Q has more USB ports

@JourneymanGeek where did you find the exact port info, anyway?
@JourneymanGeek oh?

8:28 AM
ah no
both have 4
my bad
tech specs
oh
some older P2715qs don't do 4k60 over HDMI

@JourneymanGeek Aha, thanks.

(but that's a nice thing about my secondary monitor ;p)

@JourneymanGeek I have the U2417H... has one HDMI (hence the H), but is the 24" super thin, almost no bezel monitor, whereas the P has awful bezels and isn't quite as pretty to look at
Ultrasharp would be my first choice if you hve the money

@allquixotic my other monitor is very ugly ;p

@allquixotic $50 difference or so. Hmmm.
@allquixotic this review rather tends to scare me off of the Ultrasharp: amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R241SKYJ7DUVA0/…

8:35 AM
@Wildcard ehhh
caliberation devices vary
and if you're super serious, you need to caliberate the caliberator every so often.
My old workplace did grading, and they quite literally insisted on a specific model of caliberator.

Thanks, that actually helps. And I see that guy is a photographer, which makes a difference.

photographers will freak out over the smallest imperfections in a monitor

for most mere mortals, eh. ;p

kinda silly imo (although perhaps they "need" that for their "job", can someone actually perceive such differences enough to impact their work?)

@allquixotic in fairness to photographers, a couple reviews further down there is a wedding photographer who gave it 5 stars and said, "Sure, there are more accurate monitors out there, but for a hefty premium with diminishing returns."

8:39 AM
hah!
@allquixotic in my old job, they needed seriously consistant colours
not accurate. consistant. So you would have 4-5 different people working on the same thing
@Wildcard I can tell you, with the default colour settings, the P2715Q's... very nice ;p
all I did was turn down the brightness to about 32% I think

Cool. I think I'll go with the Ultrasharp. U2718Q. I like the look of it.
Thanks very much for the help and advice! :)
@JourneymanGeek what's your secondary monitor?

@Wildcard a crossover 289K

??

@Wildcard cheapish korean 4k/TN monitor
7
A: 28" TFT for under $350

Journeyman GeekI was assuming you're pretty much going to have to get a TV at that price, and you might be running at a lower refresh rate. You're going to need to do some comparison shopping for your local market, but currently retailers seem to be selling off the 35 inch SE39UY04 at around 350-400 USD - see ...

I have a review here

@JourneymanGeek Thanks!
I didn't even know about hardware recs, but I think I got better advice here than I could have gotten in that format anyway.

8:48 AM
@Wildcard they're kinda genericish, so you might end up finding something with similar specs from another vendor.

Bob
@Wildcard Pretty similar but the U has a better contrast ratio, faster panel response time, and higher colour accuracy. Of those, you'll probably notice none of them :P
The P was the first Dell 4k, I think. It was a kinda-UltraSharp-but-not in branding.
U is properly UltraSharp-branded

@Bob there was an older one actually
the P2715q was kind of the first one that was worth getting ;p

Bob
heh
@Wildcard I kinda followed in @JourneymanGeek's pawsteps :P
He was the one who suggested a P2715Q for me

@Bob Oh?
Aha.

Bob
Then I got annoyed at having one 1080p and one 4k, and picked up an Acer CB280HK cheap
@Wildcard If there's one thing chat's good for, it's hardware recs where you're not too sure of the specs :P

8:54 AM
@Bob :D

Bob
btw, @Wildcard, if you're going to be dealing with different resolutions: superuser.com/questions/1119204/…
too bad I only found that after ditching the 1080p monitor

@Bob Good to know, thanks!
Hmmm...that makes me think. I'll only have the one monitor, but now I'm wondering if it will be sensible (or even possible) to set up KVM switching between my work computer and my personal, so they can both use the same monitor.
Eh.
Probably more trouble than it's worth.
Especially when my Mac display is pretty darn nice already.

morning i feel terrible

@allquixotic Sorry I missed the earlier conversation... Yes, I calibrate all my monitors. Yes, I'm working with a TN display for my photo work. Is it ideal? No, but the important part is that it's good enough, and better than working with an uncalibrated display.

@Burgi becuase you spent £2k on flowers?

Modern TN displays are actually pretty good with keeping the color shift in check when you view the monitor off-axis. Of course, you want IPS or AHVA if maximum color accuracy is required, but the monitor I chose is a compromise between color accuracy, size, gaming performance, and price. I do not have the money or desk area to run a professional monitor alongside a gaming monitor.
