ffs
the scope of this damn calculator i'm building has changed AGAIN
you're building a calculator tho
surely somewhere there is already one out there.
Bob
Bob
that's an update of that build from a few days back
any suggestions? (@JourneymanGeek, @bwDraco)
@djsmiley2k calculator is a grand term for getting an estimated price
@Burgi no libs for adding numbers together?
or is this just legacy crap making your life hell, as usual?
@djsmiley2k no....
why the hell would you import a lib to do basic maths?
16:13
@Bob i'm so jelly.
@Burgi then why is it so hard? D:
i didn't say it was hard
sorry, i'm just used to sane development praticies.
i said the scope had changed
also i need a spelling lib ;D
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k speccing it for a friend
16:14
then i'm jelly of them.
@Bob no traditional HDD?
If gaming rig then yeah.... more storage?
if not, then y such high processor?
/me loves a fast proc
Bob
Bob
@Burgi yea, something we talked about but he might add later
@djsmiley2k tbh i5 would've been fine but he wanted to go big :P
yea, mostly gaming
16:30
@Bob Looks good but you might want more storage.
If he can afford it, a larger SSD will better prepare him for future games, but he could just add an electromechanical drive for media files to free up space.
(says someone who has a pair of 1 TB SSDs in his desktop :P)
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco there's enough ports and bays to add a second SSD too, if necessary. for context he's running off a 256 GB laptop at the moment
with a bunch of portable drives for media storage
If M.2 NVMe is an option, I'd prefer that - it's the natural next step up for system responsiveness.
Oh man, shame my turtle bites
else i'd put him on my head for a 'turtles all the way down' hat
Though technically I could strap a plastic box to a hat, wear that, pop him in
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco at almost 1.5x the price, it's most definitely not worth it
any benefits would be negligible anyway, outside of benchmarking
and I say this as the guy with the 960pro...
I was thinking 960 EVO.
(yes, Astaroth boots from a 1 TB 960 PRO, which is expensive AF)
Bob
Bob
16:45
@bwDraco 960evo is the one that costs 1.5x more than the 850evo
m.2/nvme is firmly an enthusiast thing that has barely measurable benefit in normal usage
heck, even in more extreme use cases it's hard to tell
mildly related, 8 TB archive drives are real cheap right about now: camelcamelcamel.com/…
@bwDraco Looks like 4 TB HDDs are still the sweet spot for $/GB
for standard desktop drives anyway; 8TB archives are cheaper for raw capacity...
Ouch.
@Bob Toshiba OCZ RD400?
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco not available
:(
The RD400 is supposed to be a solid, all-round performer with no major weaknesses.
Not as fast as the Samsung drives, but a top pick for more price-sensitive applications.
Bob
Bob
could be cheaper than the 850evo if ordered from amazon us, actually... hmm
Hmm. The RD400 appears to be discontinued. Uses planar MLC, if I'm not mistaken.
Bob
Bob
16:54
but that adds a fair bit of complexity
so maaaaaaybe an option
otoh, 850 evo is good enough and tried and tested
Yeah. The 850 EVO is a battle-tested solution.
(running a SanDisk Ultra 3D as the other SSD in Astaroth, FWIW)
The new SanDisk Ultra 3D (and technically identical WD Blue 3D) are great performers and some of the cheapest drives you'll find in higher capacities, but the warranty is 3 years and not 5.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Thanks for that suggestion, I've passed it on
TBH I think either would be exactly the same to him.
Warranty is easier on the locally-sourced Samsung drive.
@djsmiley2k turtles all the way up
lul
i could just put one of my cats on my head
the internet loves cats, right?
17:09
meow
Also a 'it'smadeofstars' hat
omg can someon please inspire me to figure out how to display things on my kindle
once that's done, i might actually get the other half of those projects done
such as 'distance to the wife', 'temps', 'clock', 'things in todo lists' etc
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco wait I had the wrong capacity selected it actually costs a lot more
cderp
2.1 is teething and his molars are coming through
this is not fun
18:08
OK, I have a better representation of myself with my hat
Not as good as my usage :P
But I like it.
OMG, I didn't see your update till now! That's awesome, @djsmiley2k
Hehe. Two of my four hats are disguises and two sort of match my current appearance. Can you guess which is which? ;)
bowtie and glasses for current appearance?
you're suited and booted.... for a 3D movie?
18:11
50% score
then the hat hat i guess ;D
Hint: I am bald and I don't own any bowties and hate wearing ties ;)
i winn0r
my beard growth has always been weird... that it grows in an almost perfect handlebar before it finally comes through on my cheeks
Mine is also weird now. My moustache is very dark brown and the rest of my beard is grey now almost white (as is the remaining small amount of hair on my head).
@djsmiley2k android has a built in tracking system now
18:20
it has for ages, that's what i mean
but i'll display the distance on my kindle on the wall
is it not a lock screen widget?
oh, dunno, nor care, not whatr i want
The latest version of LineageOS broke file permissions, preventing most apps from accessing user data. I'm trying to revert.
Dealing with these issues is not fun.
thats qute a major derp
18:34
19:04
USB 3.0 on this cheap laptop appears to be broken :(
It took me ages to download the image properly (it came up corrupted twice) and reflash the phone.
Things should be working normally again. Sadly, it means I am on the November 6, 2017 security patch level, which could leave my phone more vulnerable to attacks.
Hopefully, the LineageOS team fixes this soon.
forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/… (start from the second post on the page)
> After updating to LOS 2017-12-15 my internal storage is no more accessible by installed Apps.
Maybe it's a mount options problem, because Apps from the ROM and rooted Apps have access.
"Downgrading" to 2017-12-08 resolves the problem and internal storage is accessible again.
What matters is that things are working again.
I'll be watching that XDA thread to see if they can fix this. Chances are good it will not make it in time for the next weekly build, as the maintainer may not have recognized the bug yet; as many apps and features do not need file-level access to system storage to function correctly, things can appear to work normally until I, say, try to download something or open a file in Adobe Reader.
@CanadianLuke: Unpin this as it's expired.
Wow, I can't believe a mod is getting ordered around...
-.-
THERE! YOU MONSTER!
19:16
:P
Sorry - were you busy?
I pinged you because you happened to be the only mod or RO available.
cough
A flag would be waaaaaay too heavy-handed.
Could've pinned a message....
19:19
I'm not an RO or mod.
3
lol
PIN ABUSE!
cough, cough
Well, did I do anything wrong?
I'm not going to indiscriminately ping multiple ROs or mods, I just ping whoever happens to be active.
@bwDraco Yes, you forgot to say please ;)
lol
Sorry for the lack of manners :p
@bwDraco do you run lineage @rahuldottech ?
@bwDraco so.. the internal storage blows up right?
is this 'internal storage' as in SD card used as internal storage?
19:26
@djsmiley2k It's the "virtual SD card" for file storage.
so no
hmmm
k.
Something about the permissions broke, because root is able to access the files.
see that techincally could cause what happeend to me
I'd have to test my SD card to see if it's actually dead
19:43
Wat.
Well... old batteries tend to have higher internal resistance, so the current voltage level may indicate a deceptively high power level. When subjected to load, the battery suffers higher than normal voltage drop, which can cause the device to turn off without warning.
0
A: Battery drains suddenly from 18% to 5% , laptop hibernates

bwDracoTypically, this is caused by an aging battery. Your claim that the laptop is new is questionable because the system has an older (Haswell) processor and is running Windows 8.1 rather than Windows 10. (Perhaps it was new old stock?) An older battery tends to have high internal resistance. This me...

Apple's policy of trying to keep stuff like this hidden from the user sometimes does more harm than good.
I realize that it's important to keep things simple, but when they impact device performance, there ought to be proper disclosure.
1. Sure fine, but why lie about it for the last ... 5? years
2. My 5 yr old S3 battery didn't have issues.
which just again leads me to think apple use the cheapest shoddiest parts they can get by with
(I don't think it was always this way)

morn
@bwDraco what cheap laptop?
anybody good with httrack?
I set it only to grab jpegs but it still grabs index.html etc
id also like it to automatically rename two files of the same name
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill so apparently the word mod summons all of you
I simply don't have the time to learn to use something like wget
22:52
@CoderCat -*html
ill try that
I just typed +*.jpg and +*.jpeg before
Yea, the manual doesn't seem to specify if you need a . in there...
but '-*' '+*jpg' should get only jpg files.
@BenN ever come across this?

Q: Can't connect to Linux via SSH from PowerGUI

Daniel GonzalezI'm trying to connect to a linux host from Windows via SSH. I can successfully connect from the Windows PowerShell console with the next command: New-SSHSession -ComputerName ubuntu-018 -Credential (Get-Credential) But when I try to run the same command with the same username and password fr...

23:07
Hm, I have not
this still wont work
it gets jpegs but not all of them
-n: This gets all nearby files (all files shown on a page), rather than only those on the domain name, which is HTTracks default behavior.
use that with the weird thing ur using
> You need the html so it can find the jpegs
filter:
-* +*.htm +*.jpg +*.jpeg +*.html +*.asp +*.jsp +*.cgi
so you can't
xD
also which ones is it missing @CoderCat
23:24
they are all called full.jpg
but I only get 9 images called 300x300.jpg or 600x600.jpg
oh right
you need it to save them as like -1.jpg, etc
reading online it shouldn't overwrite existing files
I do wonder why you can't use wget tho
it said something about SSL which is way over my head
i doubvt that's the issue but
if you're grabbing abc.com/a/image.jpg and abc.com/b/image.jpg
they should be in seperate directories
k, you're going to need to share either the command your running, or something, for more help
because right now, it shouldn't be overwriting files
> Example : httrack www.all.net/someaddress.html
+*.zip will allow you to retrieve all zip files that are linked on
the site.
YOu're not trying to grab all of steelport are you?
whats that
here is what options I have set:
Bob
Bob
23:40
hm
I should get a SAS card
search domain (instead of top level domain or site)
navigate up and down
wildcards: -* +*.htm +*.jpg +*.jpeg +*.html +*.asp +*.jsp +*.cgi
are the files just called x.jpg?
not x.jpeg?n=2323rt232 etc
just x.jpg
@Bob you up?
Gitter
23:52
wow
@Bob Bifrons, the cheap Lenovo netbook with an Apollo Lake Celeron and 2 GB of RAM.
