@Bob no? O_O
Bob
Bob
o.O
one sec
@allquixotic chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118?m=41856606#41856606, and the four messages down
@allquixotic If you feel like trying it, I'll buy you one. Call it a Christmas present :)
@Bob O_O
I appreciate it, but the range and earcup shape is probably no good for me... I might buy them to "try" them (like I did the Arctis 7, which I returned because it sucks) but no need to get me a pair.... though I appreciate it :)
I could use a list of non-BT proprietary headsets, because I'm only aware of a very small number of brands
Sennheiser, Corsair and Steelseries, for the most part
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Hm... range-wise, you did say the Siberia was alright
also apparently there's a new VOID Pro
newer model than mine, supposedly with a much improved mic
the Siberia is marginal
Bob
Bob
ah
this has almost the exact specced range
probably some certification thing
00:18
the Beats are by far the longest range headset I have, more than sufficient. Class 1 FTW
I wonder if Apple W1 is the only true Class 1 chipset
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Eh, offer's open if you want it - range aside, I'm personally happy enough with the comfort to recommend it for that :P
I might get a pair from the local Best Buy, spend my gift certificates I earned by spending on Black Friday and for Xmas, and try out the range and comfort
how's the sound quality?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I'm happy with the audio output - often use it for music. Input (mic) you've heard me talk, and it's maybe not that great (esp. compared to a desktop mic like you have) but works well enough for voice chat - and is supposedly better in the new Pro version (same price?)
Not entirely sure how I'm supposed to judge mic quality though, I can only compare it to a old-ish Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB headset and a Microsoft Lifechat - I'd say it beats both :P
That Logitech headset was one of the greatest I have ever used.
as long as it's GEFTS
Good Enough For TeamSpeak - I made that up just now
Bob
Bob
It is over-ear, which is why I didn't directly add it to your hwrecs question since I think you asked for on-ear
but it's also rather different from the over-ear you said you didn't like, so...
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Unfortunately I wouldn't expect anything close to your class 1 range, but I don't think I've heard of anything short of FM-based headphones that can do that :S
@allquixotic I wonder if you could get 802.11-based headsets with acceptable latency :P
Bob
Bob

01:29
@Bob PSP!
Also I read that as Outrage.
against my better judgement, but because its too darned funny and topical... (and if anyone is actually offended, let me know! No hard feelings...)
@JourneymanGeek lol
I hate Trump and his anti-consumer policies :(
Unrelatedly, other than bandwidth related issues....
Does this load for anyone? docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/smbshare/… I can't seem to get it to open ._.
nvm, only vivaldi
I'm rabbitholing
01:46
So.. it took Astaroth 8 minutes 17 seconds to batch process 50 photos on my current workflow. That's just under 10 seconds an image. (Ryzen 7 1800X at stock, memory at 2933 MT/s with timings 14-16-16-36.)
Don't recall the exact level of performance from the old laptop, but I kinda recall it was somewhere in the ballpark of 16-20 seconds an image.
Anybody here with experience doing batch photo processing, especially on 8C+ CPUs?
(using RawTherapee, which is very FP32-heavy and scales almost linearly with core count up to at least 8C/16T)
@bwDraco Did you ask on the photography.se chat?
I'm not sure if it is particularly lively over there or not, but this seems like a perfect question for them.

 Photography Chat

All-things photography related discussion.
There isn't much activity, sadly.
02:05
MS's new docs site sucks
Seeing broken links amongst other things
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco in other words... not as good as expected?
cause I'd certainly expect more from a typical laptop vs desktop comparison, never mind generational differences
Well... not exactly. The scaling isn't 100% linear. One core is saturated while the rest are at about 80-85%.
@JourneymanGeek I bet it breaks a bunch of script blocks as well.
Nothing worse than having to decipher a script example because their CMS has interpreted # as markdown for a header instead of a comment.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco that sounds like it'll probably be even worse as you go up, if it's blocking on one thread
e.g. at 16 you might be down to ~60%?
@MichaelFrank docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/smbshare/… this won't even load on vivaldi
Bob
Bob
02:09
could also be a NUMA thing, who knows
On the Dragon, it actually hit 100% utilization, but that's on 8 slower hardware threads.
and there's broken links
@JourneymanGeek Not suprising, that's not a real browser. ;)
and it says "windows 10" but clearly the commands are for windows server
@MichaelFrank shrug its blink
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco sounds like either a 'too many cores' thing or a NUMA thing
though since it's 7 at 85% and not 4 at 85% maybe not NUMA
02:11
I think it's a core scaling limit.
Bob
Bob
and here you see why even this isn't really embarrassingly parallel :P
Yup.
I think I said something along those lines before...
Sep 15 at 5:19, by bwDraco
And despite RawTherapee's strong core scaling, there's probably little to be gained beyond 12-16 cores.
Sep 15 at 5:19, by bwDraco
(read: Amdahl's law)
A potential point for improvement is to process more than one image at once using fewer threads per image on high-core-count CPUs.
Given that each image is independent... there's no reason to not do that if scaling isn't linear otherwise.
That, however, would require more memory (and RawTherapee is already very memory-hungry) and memory bandwidth. This is alleviated by the fact that both Intel X299 and AMD X399 platforms use quad-channel memory architectures.
02:33
I seriously wish there was GPU acceleration support. The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti would make short work of this sort of processing.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Yea, proper batching tends to scale better (constrained by memory or disk rather than CPU) than multithreaded processing of a single item
Batching is, CPU-wise, embarrassingly parallel.
Multithreading is hard :P
Bob
Bob
02:55
@JourneymanGeek Next up: figuring out how to protect that mini pc from power outages :P
Hm. I could just hope that everything survives an outage.
Or I could buy one of those little 12V UPSes, which are either expensive ($100+) or dodgy (Chinabay)
03:05
Huh... I did not expect to get any hats this season...
I got a secret hat... but how?
03:16
@MichaelFrank there's been hats for doing anything ;p
unless you mean the mod boat hat hat
Whatever hat you seem to have on, I also have.
ya, that's for closevoting iirc
03:32
Oh that makes sense, since that's the only thing I've done today.
Bob
Bob
> The “best” example of this maintainability problem could be found in the old implementation of the printf family of functions. The CRT provides 142 different variations of printf, but most of the behavior is the same for all of the functions, so there are a set of common implementation functions that do the bulk of the work.
O_O
> These common implementation functions were all defined in output.c in the CRT sources(1). This 2,696 line file had 223 conditionally compiled regions of code (#ifdef, #else, etc.), over half of which were in a single 1,400 line function. This file was compiled 12 different ways to generate all of the common implementation functions.

03:51
"The term 'Install-WindowsFeature' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet," which is because i was told to use install instead of get
infact get nor install work
errrr
yup!
I think the docs are actually meant for server, but I'm hoping someone proves me wrong ;p
trying to figure out why the syntax would be wrong
well i can install any windows feature currently.
through powershell
this work for anyone if they choose windows10/2016?
install-windowsfeature fails for me too
you have to import a module
NM only applies to server
nope. no difference
also, The cmdlets work
04:00
i know you are suppose to be able ot add rfeature thorugh powerhsell
didnt work me ;$
If it were easy, I'd self answer ;)
dont get me the spray bottle out
lol its not working because these are dism commands
so i cant determine if the feature is suppose to work or not
lol
that's kinda XY I suppose
what I'm really trying to do is throttle SMB or connections to a specific IP
@Ramhound I might have something useful there
04:16
so you haver to user dism but that does nt seem right if your using RSAT
sorry typing on a surface type keyboard is impossible let alone on a bed
it indicates that manager role has to be installed which is server but the documentation on the cmdlet to limit seems to indicate you can apply it to a client
Based off his list...
C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:SMBBW

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.16299.15

Image Version: 10.0.16299.125

Error: 0x800f080c

Feature name SMBBW is unknown.
A Windows feature name was not recognized.
Use the /Get-Features option to find the name of the feature in the image and try the command again.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log
ms moved to a new doc system i am guessing this is a mistake ssaying that it applies to windows 10
seems to be
DISM /online /Get-Features dosen't list it either....
Might be barking up the wrong tree
04:25
legacy version of the doc system indicates windows 8,(also) 1 and 2012R2 but i don't believe it
Bob
Bob
I would not be surprised if this simply means the cmdlet (which can target a remote machine via -CimSession) is available on Windows 10 but can only target Server. — Bob 55 mins ago
it's fairly common IIRC
bleh
I'll probably be asking another question about the actual problem soonish
04:50
what can powershell do that batch/vbscript cant
just shipped a christmas pressent tpo the wrong hosue oops
tell the ship to do a U turn
smartphones need more physical buttons and less pretendy buttons. for example screen zoom buttons, a tab key to select different things
not all web pages let the user pinch to zoom
05:07
Drive C running low space...
I wonder how to increase partition size.
I have no partition space left.
easeus partition manager
raid. or get a new drive
@CoderCat Doesn't Windows have integrated?
FDISK?
Why EaseUs?
more user friendly, possibly safer. runs in ring 0
fdisk is a command line tool and probably req
uires a format
How about Windows Storage Manager?
what about it?
you mean disk manager?
05:18
Yes. Disk Management
Shrink, Extend
You would have to delete an existing partition in order to extend the C partition
specifically the partition that follows the C partition
Delete? Are you sure?
If I want to shrink 20GB to make available for partition C I will have to delete/format F?
> The MIT researchers warned that this type of technology could be used to trick TSA’s own threat recognition algorithms into thinking that, for instance, a turtle is a gun, or vice-versa. Such hacks could also be employed by terrorists to disguise their bombs from TSA’s image recognition systems.
Ouch.

o.O just found this (cc @JourneymanGeek) dragonblogger.com/kingdian-s280-ssd-review-and-benchmark
That's scary.
Bob
Bob
also, no relation to @bwDraco? :P
No, not me.
See bwdraco.blogspot.com instead.
Not a lot of activity lately, though.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco was joking
05:25
@Bob shrug
I buy some cheap crappy tech
and they work well for the specific uses ;p
26.5 sec to desktop. Pretty impressive.
....
@Bob my dad runs one as his daily driver
actually
How's the QD1 random read performance? That's probably the biggest factor here.
on an old r61 with a gig of ram on windows 10
That's hitting a decade now?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek hey, I was looking because I wanted to get one!
05:27
@Bob Its "reliable"
as in "hasn't died yet"
Hmm... Planar MLC. That stuff is hard to find these days. No wonder why it performs well.
@bwDraco here's the joke
they have no choice but to use it
the kingdian I have has no ram cache
and early cacheless controllers did not support TLC
if you shrink the partion then the partionwill be after the existing partiton'
my pc is made out of stone
> ECC (Error Correction Code): Supports BCH 66-bits/1KB ECC.
05:29
what you want to do can ONLY be accomplish by deleting the partition extending the partition then creating a new partition,
That means it can't be TLC NAND. TLC needs LDPC. BCH will not cut it.
@bwDraco its MLC
rofl
If it's MLC, then I'm not surprised it outperforms name-brand TLC NAND drives.
WE HAS HAD THIS CONVERSATION BEFORE
Mar 23 '16 at 5:58, by bwDraco
A few of the Kingdian models do seem to be using JMicron controllers, though.
around there
The S280 uses an SMI controller.
Those are generally better than JMicron.
Wait a sec...
Seems to be variable BOM. The newer ones appear to be using TLC NAND.
It is not DRAMless, though. Disassembly reveals a Nanya DRAM chip on the board.
Looks like some Chinese-fabbed NAND (part number HTHA16S2T1-10). It's surprising that it performs this well.
Bob
Bob
05:38
@JourneymanGeek @bwDraco Looks like KingFast might actually be a good choice :P thessdreview.com/daily-news/latest-buzz/…
idk what the prices are now though
I cannot find any solid info on this part - but chances are good this is planar MLC. Chinese fabs are slower to adopt new tech.
There's no sign of SLC buffering, which would be a dead giveaway for a drive that's not using planar MLC NAND.
Then again...
Aug 21 at 15:23, by bwDraco
Finally, some TLC NAND from someone other than Samsung that doesn't slow down when you write too much to it! http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wd-blue-3d-sandisk-ultra-3d-ssd,5134.html

But if you are using a keyboard with autocorrect, it should change your words on the fly.
07:36
...CUE crashed on me while using one of the macro keys on my Corsair K95 RGB Platinum o_O
> Corsair Utility Engine has stopped working
Wat.
This was after hitting the G1 key (a macro key configured to speed up a common action in my photo post-processing workflow).
Restarted CUE. We should be okay now.
08:23
@CoderCat no sea key?
that's mah lyfe.
So apple admits they deliberately slow down older phones, with a maybe plausible reason..... why did they deny it for years then?
And why is it such a severe problem with iphones, my 5 yr old s4 wouldn't randomly shutdown
08:51
morning
what on earth has happened to the cold weather?
its back into double digits again!
09:11
@Burgi you in the UK?
we must have a related weather system here in the US, except for the arctic systems that sometimes come down from Canada and freeze our butts off. here in the mid-Atlantic region of the US, the temperatures are way up, too
@allquixotic i am
It's almost like the whole planet is just... warming up
@djsmiley2k as much as I agree with that, I don't believe that short-term weather patterns can be directly attributed to climate change yet - it's entirely reasonable to think that we could have a very cold year; we might even have a ridiculously cold decade if we just stray from the sun a liiiiiiittle bit
TLDR, yes we're having a big impact on the climate, but the changes we're making won't be seen in the regular til decades from now, and it's really what we do (or don't do) in the next 25-50 years that'll either preserve or kill our weather patterns' stability
we need to not talk about any individual "cold winter" or "hot winter" or whatever as being "climate change" because that gives climate deniers ammo to say "Nothing's wrong!" when we have a cold spell, even a cold decade, which is entirely possible
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Funny thing, that. It's cooled down a lot over the last two days over here :)
peaked at 38 yesterday ~noon, and now we're sitting at a nice 22
though that's probably just because it rained yesterday arvo :P
@Bob arvo? I recall asking you what that meant before but I forgot
Bob

not a bad time for me, but I'd feel bad about distracting you from your job interview :P
it's in 10 hours
Bob
Bob
09:24
...sleeping? :P
oh wait it's probably early morning over there
@allquixotic yup
hehe
I don't remember a proper cold winter here, since like 1990 tho
oh plz lord let this laptop upgrade correctly once these win7 updates are done :/
it's 4:26 AM
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic IIRC it's observable now as more days with extremes appearing, but the extremes themselves are not noticeably worse, and there's still plenty of 'normal' days. oh, and there's extremes in both directions too
@allquixotic is that a "I woke up ridiculously early" or "I'm nocturnal now"?
'course, as a cat, you're nocturnal by default :P
@Bob I slept 6 hours starting at around 8pm after being sleep-deprived the previous night and having a busy extroverted day that drained me
woke up, watched some Youtube
salivated over laptops then decided better of it
Bob
Bob
lol
09:28
if I get the new job which should come with $, I'll celebrate by satisfying my wants
Bob
Bob
if you're up for sins, I am too - but probably only for about 2 hours :(
@Bob that'll just annoy me because we'll have to stop just as things are getting interesting :P
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic on that note, good luck with the interview!
probably around the time that the AI sends a huge attack force that I have to work hard to repel from a fortified system
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic lol. I'll be more active in about 4
09:29
I use FF full-time on Windows on my main desktop now, because if Mozilla isn't trustworthy then what's Chrome lol
Bob
Bob
hm, 1.84 was the last update
@allquixotic lemme guess, that fuss over that extension again?
@Bob yeah, I don't care about it personally
I actually like Mr. Robot
Bob
Bob
the one that everyone exploded over because maybe a dozen people actually realised it didn't activate?
@allquixotic it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overblown
Lunduke is being pretty FOSS purist about this, which surprises me, because he's usually a little more pragmatic
Bob
Bob
it was an easter egg that you had to dig into configs to actually activate, and did nothing otherwise
if anything, it was far more visible than an easter egg baked into the core browser
09:32
also he's sponsored by System76, which is basically a Clevo repackager that charges you about $150 extra per SSD vs. what you can buy on Amazon, pop open the back of the laptop and install by hand
Bob
Bob
I swear 90% of the fuss is manufactured by inaccurate reporting
if anything it's (much) less intrusive than the Pocket integration
I just remove Pocket every time I see it
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Pocket's actually owned by Mozilla now :P
@allquixotic if you're still up for sins in ~4-ish hours?
@Bob probably not - I'll be focusing on learning by then, for sure, or asleep
@allquixotic Google is very open about the fact you're the product tho
Bob
Bob
09:38
ok
@JourneymanGeek Loads fine for me in the UK with FF.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic weekend's probably a better idea anyway :P
after you have the new job and all :D
