how do I stop windows from fucking rebooting whenever it wants
I have disabled this many times yet it still fucking does it
win 10
shrug question for the main site. Also LANGUAGE!

Q: How to *disable* automatic reboots in Windows 10?

mpenWindows 10 lets you 'schedule' a reboot for later. I want to disable it. Evidently Windows scheduled itself for a reboot last night when I wasn't looking and just closed everything I had been working on the night before. I reboot on the regular; I don't need Windows to do that for me. Can I di...

There's a handful of alleged solutions there, not sure if they'll all work nowadays
I'll take a look thanks
I wonder if the notepad trick still works ;p
bush hid the facts?
00:42
IIRC I had a solid solution on my other machine, but that might have only worked because it's Pro
ive got ultimate here
All I did was make it not download updates without my consent using Group Policy
There's also "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" (Microsoft.Policies.WindowsUpdate:NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers_Title) but they might have killed that in 1607; I kept it on just in case it does something
There's no windows 10 ultimate AFAIK?
Correct
oh, pro then
00:49
there's home, pro, pro workstation, enterprise and education
there is now a new version
windows 10 smashed up edition
01:07
@JourneymanGeek You missed Pro Education, Enterprise LTSB, Mobile Enterprise, Mobile, IoT, S and Team ;)
See also: the enormous chart on this MSDN page

01:27
man, they've put out a lot of different editions of Windows over the years

01:45
@rahuldottech fwiw ash I have an entry in the hat contest :p
why do people write int printf instead of just printf sometimes
or printf("%d"); //int
@CoderCat int printf as actual code?
or int x = printf(...)?
int printf ( const char * format, ... );
@CoderCat that's the declaration of a printf function; it's not an invocation of printf
oh
what is format?
01:59
@CoderCat just the name of a variable; it can be omitted and the behavior is the same
oh ok

Q: Longer range wireless headphones for gaming

allquixoticI am looking for a pair of headphones and/or a Bluetooth transceiver or base station that matches all criteria in at least one of the criteria groups below, as well as all of the Hard Requirements. Please note: This request is not only about Bluetooth; I am open to considering non-Bluetooth wire...

@Bob @JourneymanGeek FYI headphone friends
I'm afraid the answer is "you're SOL"
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic What was wrong with the headphones that do have the range?
Oh missed some of the cons
Sounds like... almost there?
> Pairing with Bluetooth transceivers like the Avantree Priva III, Creative BT-W2, etc. is a nightmare. Extremely difficult, takes 5-10 minutes of repeated trial and error. My Bluetooth environment is unfortunately clogged with a few devices that constantly are in pairing mode (and I can't ask their owner to turn them off), which "steal" the transceiver from my headphones.
if that weren't the case, then the Beats (your favorite brand!) would actually be perfect
that's kinda why I had NFC in one or two of the criteria groups; I was like, "if I can get a Class 1 transmitter and headphones that both have NFC, I'll be set!"
Bob
Bob
I should probably go mow the lawn before the clouds all go
bbl
@allquixotic that sounds broken
your environment, I mean
you should go pair those devices and start broadcasting questionable sounds over them, preferably at max volume

3 hours later…
05:11
@Bob Ok, but isn't the design of the devices a bit broken if they can basically be DoS'ed by a single device that leaves itself in discovery mode all the time?
@allquixotic my experience with wireless headphones involves... washing machines failling down chairs?
@JourneymanGeek lol
Unrelatedly, the last bit of reputation to unlocking a new privilege feels like it takes forever ._.
On any site ;p
06:08
@djsmiley2k It's installed through Shield Studies: support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/shield
To prevent this from happening again, clear the Allow Firefox to install and run studies checkbox in Options > Privacy & Security.
Shield is normally used for testing new features (maybe @Bob will know more about it), but somebody at Mozilla thought it was a good idea to use it for marketing purposes.
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k (cc @DavidPostill, @Ave, @bwDraco) should be noted that although the addon does get auto-installed, it's not active unless someone manually goes to about:config and toggles extensions.pug.lookingglass. It's basically an easter egg.
I suspect Mozilla, despite rising revenue, is still looking for more money. It's giving me the impression that they are desperate to compete against Chrome and to get as much money as it can before Google kills them. (The default search engine is now Google once again, and Mozilla is in a legal battle with Yahoo/Verizon because they terminated their agreement with them.)
Bob
Bob
Also "installs adverts" is a bit strong, considering it was effectively invisible unless someone goes and toggles it, at which point it ... messes with webpages in a way that's not even remotely related to the thing it's supposedly advertising unless you're already familiar with it :\
Mozilla's trying not to rely too much on Google. They could drop them at any time precisely because they make a competing browser.
@Bob It's treated as a user study and is enabled on a small subset of Firefox installations.
Bob
Bob
That said, it was a stupid PR move, considering how media likes ot run with this kind of thing.
@bwDraco Hm? No.
The addon is installed via the shield channel. The addon is not automatically activated, afaik.
06:17
I've since pulled out of Shield Studies. Normally, I allow telemetry because it helps Mozilla improve their browser (and I have used their public telemetry data in the past), but I can no longer expect Shield to be used solely for research or testing purposes if it's being used for marketing.
Again, this smells of desperation for revenue, despite a healthy-looking balance sheet.
It's like someone asked at a meeting, "Are there other ideas for strategic partnerships that are consistent with our mission? We can't rely on Google, since they can pull the plug at any time."
I think the biggest issue is that all the other major browsers are developed by commercial entities. Firefox is backed by a nonprofit whose primary revenue source is a direct competitor. Since Firefox cannot become a commercial product and Mozilla has little in the way of products or services that can generate revenue directly, they have to resort to alternative revenue sources.
Mozilla's financial position is an extremely vulnerable one, with a single point of failure. If Google pulls the plug, they will not last very long.
Bob
Bob
Looks like browser.display.truth was the original config setting, which I really can see being used as an easter egg.
@bwDraco Do we have to turn every conversation into "company X is failing because not enough money"?
I think someone thought it would be funny/cool
Bob
Bob
that is what Hanlon's Razor suggests, yes
Yeah.
> Hanlon's Razor
Bob
Bob
06:32
Considering it was a TV series, I suspect the intention was to preload the addon, then some future episode could go "toggle that option!" and hey it worked!
Why do I keep assuming bad faith?
Bob
Bob
Especially since browser.display.truth (no longer the pref key) sounds TV-y
This is why I get in trouble in chat.
also, the show actually has reasonably realistic hacking
And a dog.
Come to think of it, it was probably a mistake, and it was probably implemented incorrectly or the dev failed to consider the consequences.
Bob
Bob
06:34
Without evidence, I don't believe anyone's stupid enough to push an addon that flips the word "fuck" of all things
> Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
that's what it did?
So... do I need a mod warning?
Bob
Bob
06:34
not only is it confusing (and not obvious enough to be marketing, uproar aside), but it's so freakin' obvious
After all, this is the primary reason I get in trouble in chat.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco It DIDN'T DO ANYTHING unless you go and turn it on
!!s/trouble/annoy people/
@JourneymanGeek After all, this is the primary reason I get in annoy people in chat. (source)
06:35
and people get annoyed all the time
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek There was a list of "Mr Robot-related" words. "fuck" was in the list.
@JourneymanGeek This time, nothing serious happened, but it happens often enough that it's actively disruptive.
Bob
Bob
I highly doubt anyone was stupid enough to go and vertically flip such a common word, enabled by default without warning.
@bwDraco as constantly navel gazing for ages after that.
@Bob sounds like a hilarious prank
Bob
Bob
Problem here is twofold. The enabled state is nonobvious (because it's using a custom config key, the "addon enabled" system state is different from the "addon actually activates" addon state). And people end up getting confused over the nonobvious state.
06:37
@Bob An add-on that is installed automatically, even if in a disabled state, causes people to panic.
Bob
Bob
So people are discussing it being "enabled" because it's listed in the addons list as enabled ... even though it's not really "enabled" because the custom key is the first thing checked in the bootstrap.js loader
@bwDraco right after a release that made major changes that broke many people's addons ;p
I think this is much ado over nothing. The media like to blow things out of proportion because it attracts viewers, and therefore advertising revenue.
This is another case of "because money".
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco I can see why some people are panicking, not helped by fairly typical "take a story and run with it" media. The only reason I'm trying to emphasise it wasn't actually doing anything was cause you said "It's treated as a user study and is enabled on a small subset of Firefox installations.".
Money causes so many problems, yet the world won't function without a medium of exchange.
Bob
Bob
06:40
Nor was it implemented incorrectly, afaict. The config checking barrier looks fairly solid.
@Bob So... as an RO, can you consider an official warning or a kick-mute the next time I assume bad faith when a plausible good-faith explanation exists?
...let's talk about this in the mod room.
Bob
Bob
I'm not kicking anyone for that. Nor warning anyone. That would be overstepping what I consider to be my boundaries.
@Bob Woah, are those lines between the checkers actually straight?
Bob
Bob
@BenN looks like it! if you cover up the rest of the image :P
@JourneymanGeek my er-x also does hairpin nat :D
Bob
Bob
06:49
hm
I'm currently winning that RAM bid
not sure if that's a good thing :P
incidentally, if anyone has a spare DDR3L 8GB SO-DIMM, I'll buy it
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek too bad NUCs don't seem to have >1 RAM slot :(
@Bob my Beebox does!
Bob
Bob
everyone has spare 4GB
no one has spare 8GB
Also supposedly dosen't take more than 2gb sticks (I have 2x4)
Bob
Bob
06:51
@JourneymanGeek o.O
@Bob I have a couple. The Dragon is no longer in active use and I can remove the extra 2x8GB if you want it.
@Bob I don't even remember seeing anything with 8gb sticks ever.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek what CPU?
The problem is that it's going to be expensive to ship from New York to Sidney.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco yea, come to think of it that's probably a bad idea :P
06:51
@Bob N3150 I think
cherry trail
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ah, decent
the one I'm going for is N3160
which should be more or less the same, slightly higher clock
@Bob I literally just run two apps on it, and sometimes a browser
I did install opera 12 on it the other day tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I find even apt upgrade is painful on slower CPUs
@Bob runs ok for what I use it for
Bob
Bob
*cough*dedibox sc/xc*cough*
06:53
other than the occational system breaking when I upgrade....
but that's fedora
Bob
Bob
though part of that is probably cause the zfs modules need to be compiled
probably ;p
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco yea I'll probably stick to 4. Thanks though.
@JourneymanGeek I think my own laptop is 2x8 actually
haswell, iirc, so would be pre-ddr4
Bob
Bob
but I'm still kinda using it so don't really want to cannibalise it yet :P
06:54
I think Athena III is skylake (and presumably 1x4) , Athena II/Artemis is 2x4 as is phoebe
I'd have to use Priority Mail International, which would cost me some $35. Hardly worth it to ship $135 of memory.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco yea, shipping either direction US <=> AU is crazy
I swear it'd be cheaper to send it via China
Bob
Bob
like, I think I can send a 1kg box to China for $5, and China to US probably isn't much. Problem is I have no idea how to write Chinese (nor Chinese street addresses) soooooo :P
also it'd probably take anywhere from 2 to 24 months
lol
@Bob Funny thing is...
we use a cheap, backalley courier to india
literally you walk into a phone shop and go "I need to send a letter to india"
Bob
Bob
06:58
@JourneymanGeek yea uh, guess how the $5/kg parcel works :P
;p
is it slow tho?
Bob
Bob
local news agent with the price on a piece of A4 stuck to the window :P
haven't got a clue!
I'm convinced that my DX shipments are stuck due to singles day ._.
and they arn't tracked either ._.
Bob
Bob
wasn't that, like, a month ago?
yup ;p
apparently the local delivery places they use are still backlogged
and dpex is pretty terrible
Bob
Bob
06:59
@JourneymanGeek there's that time I ordered a bag of laptop screws. A month later I ordered another two bags. Two weeks later I had two bags. 4 months later I had 3 bags.
@Bob sounds about right ;p
good thing is at this point I'd have everything I need to order...
other than maybe a 3d printer.
;p
Bob
Bob
lol
lemme know if you find a good one
(tempted to)
Bob
Bob
I could probably use one too
naw, I'm looking at single gantry one
simple/cheap
Bob
Bob
07:01
@JourneymanGeek simple/cheap is good
I don't need great precision
granted, I think I can build the thing I want off stuff off daiso and the art store ;p
Dammit, @Bob. You beat me to it.
but ugh
I don't really want to spend money + no real space
I'd probably end up building a small workshop when I've moved out ;p

Q: Why does Chrome sometimes download a PDF instead of opening it?

RgrthatWhen I go to certain addresses of PDF files, Chrome downloads the PDF instead of opening it using its built-in PDF viewer. The page is then blank white. There is no problem with my Chrome settings: I try addresses of other PDF files, and Chrome behaves as expected (I have it set to use Chrome's ...

Hot network questions
user226528
@DavidPostill Hi. Are you aware of a Firefox add-on called "Clippings"?
11:21
@FleetCommand Nope. Why do you ask?
user226528
@DavidPostill Well, a long time ago, you recommended me a very tedious way of keeping text clippings for run-of-the-mill commenting in SU. Not longer after that talk, I was introduced to Clippings. I am now extensively using it for Wikipedia purposes.
@FleetCommand Hmm. Will take a look. I don't find AutoReviewComments tedious to setup or use though ...
user226528
Nah. Of course you don't. We are superusers. We revel in doing tedious stuff and don't find them tedious at all. 😉
user226528
For example, one of recurrent job responsibilities is to run to the secretary's office and restart the print spooler service to help put up with HP printers' idiosyncrasies.
Well clippings doesn't support the $SITEURL$ macro which allows me to use the same comments across all 171+ sites without having n * 171 clippings - and that is what I would call tedious ;)
user226528
11:35
Well, I guess one man's meat is another man's poison.
@FleetCommand y u no script this
if not printing in last 20 minutes, restart spooler!
user226528
@djsmiley2k 20 minutes? Are you kidding? 😮 It is a secretary. She's printing every one or two minutes.
user226528
Also, you do realize that the script needs to run with admin privileges, right?
adjust minutes then
and that's a problem, why?
user226528
Nevertheless, it doesn't need scripting. Windows already supports trigger-start services.
user226528
11:45
The real problem is that the Fax service depends on it.
user226528
And I am not going to restart the Fax service unless I really have to.
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k o.O
Any issues?
At 20 C room temperature.
Wondering what should be internal temperatures at this condition.
user226528
Your goose CPU is getting cooked
12:13
@Boris_yo well i don't know what your machine is
but that's a hot cpu and gpu, maybe
mine is 55C at 14C room temp
Dang...
Could be thermal paste got old?
it could be many things, including it being a laptop
I don't know, because you've not specified
Yes, it is a laptop.
then it looks pretty standard, without knowing what gpu and cpu it is
@Boris_yo imagine me going 'my car idles at 900rpm!' -- no one can tell anything from this statement
@djsmiley2k No. Mine is Dual-Core. Quads have thermal conductivity issue with cooler's piping.

@JourneymanGeek Anger due to the fact that Net Neutrality is the easiest to fix. I didn't even have to be fixed till like a day ago. FCC Idiots.
@rahuldottech well from a certain point of view
they've gotten exactly what they wanted
@JourneymanGeek Which is not what people want
and since its by an unelected official and congress is controlled by the party that appointed him - there's little that can be done
Well until people start setting pirate ISPs with wet string or something
but but
its something changable.
and something that people feel affects them

@JourneymanGeek just found this aliexpress.com/item/…
Broadwell-U, anyone? :P
Bob
Bob
hm
so it comes down to 3215U or N3160
Broadwell-U or Braswell
I'd lean towards the braswell for this
but I'm all about ludicious main machines and low low low powered main machines
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Any particular reason?
considering price is about the same
grabted, the braswell one comes from a more reputable seller...
@Bob and lower TDP
Bob
Bob
14:58
hm. the Broadwell-U has a surprisingly high TDP
Bob
Bob
and doesn't do AES-NI?!
what?
I'm... shocked
this is 'only' going to control your APs right?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek as a first use, yea
might end up chucking more on it over time, but nothing particularly heavy
every time I see someone link to cpuboss I die a little inside
Pondering the second lan port.
Bob
Bob
15:03
@JourneymanGeek they both have two LAN ports
the broadwell-u is hdmi + vga
the braswell is dp + 2x hdmi
Or the need for it at all
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek well... it's not like the boxes with only a single port are any better or cheaper
unless you're suggesting one of the embedded atoms?
Bob
Bob
hm
15:05
actually not really sure why I need a 4 port one either ;p
could move over an existing gigabit switch I suppose
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea uh... don't try to use it as a switch
like, seriously - get a proper switch, managed or not, for LAN switching
cause bridged ports are hell on the CPU (and performance)
@Bob I'm sure I had a good reason, which I don't remember now
lol
Bob
Bob
even though the x86 CPUs should handle it, they'll probably run a bit hot
@JourneymanGeek they're good if you actually want extra networks
@Bob was going to throw it on a i3 model
Bob
Bob
and you need at least two ports if you want to route properly
jamming two networks on one port is a bit of a pain
especially if you don't have VLANs
15:07
@Bob my network is "simple"
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea but even in the simple WAN + LAN case you have two
I'm only using 3 for my moderately complex network
ya, but a 2 port one's probably easier
Bob
Bob
(granted, an extra VLAN'd network on one of them)
@JourneymanGeek yea, but I think the only diff between 2 and 4 port is the 2 port ones tend to have more USB ports
right now, I'm kinda using one port off the router for my NAS and one to the homeplug setup
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek do you want them to be on the same LAN?
15:11
not really bothered
ideally I'd just go to a switch and out to all the rooms over ethernet ;p
also seems like a fun project ._.
lol
I've not done anything like that in a while
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek If you do, use a switch. If you don't, use a router. Not that hard :P
@JourneymanGeek ordered the braswell :P
8GB RAM + 128 GB SSD
might as well go for the full kit
well, that was a quick (and totally unexpected) repcap o.O
nice ;p
got 25k on MSE ;p

Not sure if this is the place to ask but I have a specific folder in which I put stand alone executables. But when I windows search they aren't found ( windows key -> type to search ). Added it to indexing but with no effect. Anyone have some advice?

@Sidar How long have you waited?
Indexing can take a couple of minutes.
2 months

I've done it a while ago, just reminded me it never worked
Bob

You can try asking on the main site, but check if there's an existing question

ill check
Bob

you could also try rebuilding the index just in case
yeah just did that, no effect
Bob
Bob
where is this folder, anyway?
e:\Software\
e being my secondary drive
Bob
Bob
probably not in an exclusion then
15:34
meaning that there are specific spots that are xcluded?

@Sidar nah, default only excludes users appdata (because it includes user profiles around it)

djsmiley2kOk so the 'correct' approach is to not give these users sudo, but it seems like this is one of those situations you can't avoid giving the users this access (Lets say you did stop them running shutdown, they might just rm -rf /* instead) However, to stop them running specific commands via sudo, ...
