Rather interesting design. Notice how the backplate allows air to pass through.
XFX used a shorter-than-normal PCB and a cooler assembly that extends well beyond the PCB.
I don't like the position of the PCIe power connectors, though.
00:26
Hmm... yet another HDMI spec.
48 Gbps bandwidth. DisplayPort tops out at 25.92 Gbps.
Well... why isn't there more 10GbE gear if USB (20 Gbps as of USB 3.2), HDMI, and DisplayPort can operate at data rates far in excess of 10 Gbps?
Networking ought to follow suit. At least Aquantia's trying to bring multi-gigabit Ethernet to consumers...
Also, and I think I've said this before... how in Oblivion are they doing these sorts of data rates on copper?
This time, there's no getting away with UTP cables. 48 Gbps just isn't going to happen without STP.
@bwDraco What about Terrabit over copper?!
It's starting to feel like DisplayPort is lagging behind HDMI...
(I've been very late to the DisplayPort game and have grown used to DVI and HDMI for display connectivity – most cheaper monitors these days use HDMI while better displays support DisplayPort, if I'm not mistaken – the Dell S2417DG is the first monitor I've worked with that uses DisplayPort natively)
There are already HDMI cables validated for 48 Gbps operation, and they aren't absurdly expensive: prnewswire.com/news-releases/…

@bwDraco When's the last time you saw a 50m long HDMI cable?
Heh. Good point.
HDMI generally isn't used beyond 3m.
Hmm. So it looks like UTP is probably still okay for shorter cables, but 48 Gbps is really pushing it.
00:42
@bwDraco different uses.
You're rarely going to go long distance on a PC monitor. Its common on PCs.
and cheaper monitors probably use HDMI cause they're really TVs
I suspect the DisplayPort cable that came with my monitor is F/UTP.
I can't quite tell from the cable markings, though.
At least we're not dealing with the insanely thick VGA and DVI cable harnesses of yore...
00:56
hah
crap VGA is thinner than good DP
Oldschool VGA was pretty thick but a lot of contemporary cables are actually pretty skinty
maan.
I think someone at ars is really teed off at Ajit Pai (not that I think they are wrong)
@JourneymanGeek Again, Trump policy.
@bwDraco its kinda nice to be able to blame him

The argument is that net neutrality is bad for business because it limits telco business models, and we need big business for a strong America. America First!
but the core issue here is over a long period of time, ISPs have consolidated
and would rather squeeze as much out of their investment, than invest more, cause why bother?
Its easy to blame the current government, but festering wounds take time and neglect
You see, supporting big business is one of Trump's core political objectives.
01:06
But the network neutrality fight has been going on for years
Trump has, at best, his current term and the next (I kinda hope not, but its not my vote)
What then?

Tried replacing the CPU on Father's old Dell (Athlon 64 x2 5000+, 2.6 GHz K8) with the CPU in the eMachines system (Athlon II X2 270, 3.4 GHz K10)... it's a no-go. System gives a constant amber power light.
Tried doing this before on a prebuilt system?
(Socket AM2 was unusually permissive in compatibility, accepting AM2+ and AM3 processors, but whether the processor will actually work tended to be very dependent on the OEM)

I got disappointed after searching high and low on Google for how to use Group Policy in order to set a default printer. Almost every article I read assumed the reader had a print server available, or would deploy a local printer connection right from the Group Policy Management Console. Finally, I found the solution!… Read more » The post Set default printer (without creating a printer)

Q: Is it rude to wear a sari as a westerner to a wedding in India?

Keltie MurdochI am a Canadian woman and I will be attending a wedding in India in January. There will be Indian and Canadian people in attendance. I was wondering if it is rude (or expected) to wear a sari to the wedding. The two disrespectful situations I am looking to avoid are: Wearing western clothes a...

@Bob most indians are super cool about that
(also I was running around in shorts and a T shirt during my brother's wedding)

Can anyone find a question on SU for a "missing" file in system32 'cause syswow64?
I'm sure we have a few, and I want a dupe close target
ooh, found one
@djsmiley2k well ... he's using his private twitter account :D
@tereško lol
he also thinks we shouldn't have any privacy ;)
13:33
hmm ... used the wrong word
I meant "personal"
basically - get used to it
people use social networks for a lot of bullshit
some of those people can become presidents
and it's not like UK does not have their own share of "tweeting politicians"
you should be thankful, that nobody has infected your Queen with social media
opinions of 70 year old would pale in comparison with ... what .. 100?
@tereško Hmm.
> The official Twitter profile for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. (Fictional portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in UKRPG.)
that's a managed account

> An exhibition celebrating the history of communications technology got a very modern royal seal of approval from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who opened the gallery today by sending her very first Tweet.

The Queen sent the Tweet from the @BritishMonarchy Twitter account in front of 600 guests from the world of science and technology. They were gathered to celebrate the new Information Age gallery at London’s @ScienceMuseum, an exhibition that explores the technological breakthroughs that have transformed how we communicate.

aaaaand, that's a publicity stunt
Annnnnnnnd I just tweeted the queen 'Word up'
@tereško hehe
yup also amusing
We are so ahgast at some points of view these days
not realising that 50% of the worlds population still holds those same views
> Ever since it launched in 2009, the Queen's personal Twitter account has used the name The British Monarchy. However royal fans will no longer find the account under the same name as its handle has been changed to the very fitting The Royal Family.
@tereško You are just jealous because There isn't a Latvian royal family. ;)
Quick question, that surely must be on the main site, but i can't find it: In powershell, is there any easy way to use a variable in specifying the executable to run? e.g.: $(env:PYTHON)\python.exe -c "...". I want to avoid creating the whole command as a sttring if possible to avoid the need to have an additional level of escpaing in the python code.

@DavidPostill we even never had one
@tereško Exactly ...

Figured out the answer, definitely is either not on the main site, or is not easily found on the main site, so I will post a self-answered question for it later.
14:40
ugh..... work keep phoning me
this happens every holiday
@Burgi Erm. Your company has today as a holiday? ;)
i have today as a holiday
@Burgi Hint. Don't answer your work phone. If you don't have one ask for one. Don't give them your personal mobile number.
@DavidPostill yeah they've got my personal one out of my HR file
Hint #2 charge them a days pay for answering the phone on your day off ;)
14:48
i've asked that
Surely your HR file is confidential :O
(hahaha I know how it works with stuff like this)
tbh I'd answer my phone to my place, even on a holiday
because I'm dumb/loyal. or something
but at the same time, this place is awesome

19:02
So... I got a little extra money for the end of the year.
And there are two smartphones down from BRL 700 to BRL 500
So which one do I buy, Samsung Galaxy On7 or LG K10 K430 TV?
My requirements are:
1) Removable battery (both have it)
2) Decent price (both are OK)
3) Have an official (or decent working) LineageOS ROM
I like the size of the Galaxy 7, but I haven't had extensive use of it. I never heard of the LG model. Can't say much more
Not Galaxy 7. Galaxy On7
> LG is not a very benevolent manufacturer with the independent developer community. Unlike Sony, Lenovo / Motorola and Samsung, they make it difficult for unlocking their boot loader.

Fortunately, this type of restriction was never definitive for the effort of some of the brand's fans. And now, the LG K10, released in 2016, had its bootloader unlocked successfully. It may not be a smartphone. It may seem like something small, but it's certainly the first step to starting new tests.

A novelty encourages the developers around a device that, curiously, has its followers even without having
"It may not be a smartphone" -> Google translate produced this phrase out of thin air. It's not on the original text.
Is... Is it Google trying to say something to me here?
"Don't buy it! It may not be a smartphone!"
OMG, what is it then? Is it... Is it a bomb?!
Is it a strudel?
Nah, Samsung has bombs covered
I never heard of the On7, so i can't give much advice... Although I really like my Asus phone
19:20
Sigh. I have until night to choose it, the price might change tomorrow. =/
Apparently neither have official Lineage ROMs. There are ROMs for the K10, but not this specific TV-powered model for the Brazilian market.
Why those goddamn Brazilians love their TV so much?! Damn you Brazilians!
Lol. I am disappointed that I can't find any custom ROMs with adequate abilities for my Asus phone, but the stock ROM does 99% of what I want
My big issue is not having root immediately (dumb me!), so I can't change the hostname, or view saved wi-fi passwords
Sigh. I really wanted one I could have root and install a custom ROM.
19:58
So, K10TV has better specs (octa-core, IPS screen, 8 MP camera, 1080p video, android 6.0)
While On7 has 1,5GB RAM instead of 1GB, support for 128 GB storage instead of 32 GB, and 3000 mAh battery instaead of 2300 mAh
And the On7 has unnoficial rooting and Lineage. There are tutorials on XDA and stuff.
Which is a big factor for me. Although it's supposed to void your warranty if you root it.
Which is an utter, total, complete bullshit IMO
I'm more inclined to buy the On7. But it uses that TouchWiz UX instead of a more pure experience.
Not sure if it's a bloated / slow UI or not
20:24
Well, my OnePlus 3T has been running LineageOS since day one.
A perk of having root is being able to keep the battery in good condition for longer thanks to access to low-level charging controls.
It's dead, Jim.
(voltage set to 3860 mV, plugged into a power bank almost continuously)
i try over and over again to make this laptop boot the usb key
it just... won't
so i let it boot into linux, mount the usb key, so it definately works
reboot, and boom, it starts booting from the usb key
21:14
k so..... that windows 8 on that laptop started working ;D
it's activated and all
so how do i upgrade it to win10?! :D
21:26
Buy Windows 10!
21:41
iPhone with Airwatch + Apple Watch = Every calendar items in Exchange duplicated 50x on the watch... D:
Ok, so I just bought a Samsung Galaxy On7 (SM-G600FY).
16 GB of storage, of which 4.2 are taken by the system and other 1.8 are taken by... "?"
And I can't decide if I want to root it and install an unofficial Lineage 14.1 ROM
(which, in practice, could mean giving up on the warranty or getting a big headache should I need it)
or if I want to wait one year for the warranty to expire
TouchWiz is weird!
80 Plus (trademarked 80 PLUS) is a voluntary certification program intended to promote efficient energy use in computer power supply units (PSUs). Launched in 2004 by Ecos Consulting, it certifies products that have more than 80% energy efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load, and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100% load. Such PSUs waste 20% or less electric energy as heat at the specified load levels, reducing electricity use and bills compared to less efficient PSUs. == History == Ecos Consulting (promoter and owner of the brand) and EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) develop...
I am reading this information correctly in that, a 700 Watt Gold at 100% would only be 609 Watts?
I'm not sure, but every device ever has a loss to heat and etc and you won't ever find a 100% efficient machine.
21:55
I do know that a 700 Watt PSU isn't going to do 700 Watts at 100% efficiency. This certification program is clear as dirt.
Context:
You just have to check if this seal means it's more or less efficient than the average (yeah I am too busy / lazy to read the wiki article)

morn
@Ramhound No.
A PSU is rated for its output power.
A PSU rated at 700W should be able to provide 700W out.
If it were only 80% efficient at 700W out, then the input poewr required to provide 700W out would be 875W in.
In practice, efficiency is a curve and 80 Plus just means it should be at least 80% efficient across that curve. It can be more efficient, so it'll probably be better than 80% at 'full' power.
22:39
I thought something was off with my logic. Power calculations have all been theory based, and I sucked at those, I am still confused the simplest problems from Circuits I :-)
