Hey guys, how long do you think CHKDSK /r /f will take to run on an 500GB ssd (with ~150GB free)? Should I wait to do it over night or will it just take ~30 minutes? Thanks
@Ber depends on your CPU, RAM size/speed, quality of the SSD, whether it's SATA or NVMe, and the efficiency of the chkdsk algorithm
meow.
if you're not doing a full surface scan it should be done in less than an hour, probably
boingboing.net/2017/11/26/chinas-bike-sharing-bubble.html
I like how the bikes are somehow colour coded.
(also, not a fan of the "drop it off anywhere" bike sharing schemes but that's another story)
Ber
Ber
@allquixotic Its a laptop with i7 7700 (two cores), 8gb ram, SATA, (running win 10 chkdsk)
00:55
7700? Check the model number.
That does not appear to be a complete model number.
Are you sure this is a dual-core processor? I'm guessing you meant "i7-7700HQ", which is 4C/8T.
Ber
Ber
@bwDraco Woops, I mis-remembered. I just checked, and its actually a i7 6600U (at 2.6 ghz)
Oh, okay. That makes more sense.
Ber
Ber
@bwDraco yeah i WISH it was 4c/8t
This should be a pretty fast processor nonetheless, as laptop CPUs go.
@Ber Nod.
8th generation mobile Core processors (Kaby Lake Refresh) are available in up to 4C/8T at the same lower power consumption as the more common 2C/4T mobile processors.
But that's new stuff that Intel's coming out with to tackle some stiff competition from AMD with their Ryzen Mobile (Raven Ridge) processors.
All of these parts are specified for 15W operation.
So... it shouldn't take an excessive amount to complete. On SSD-based machines, CHKDSK is typically CPU-bound, but it still shouldn't take more than an hour, and probably less.
Ber
Ber
@bwDraco sweet, good to know it wont take too long
01:08
hm.
I am debating buying a TS 100
banggood.com/… (fairly cheap, very fancy soldering iron)
That looks like a poorly reskinned AliExpress. o.o
It reminds me of the time a Chinese company put up a webstore that looked identical to our own online store.
They'd ripped the entire thing off, except they added in a bunch of actually useful features.
It might take a while to get through to Apple on the phone, but they're very efficient once they pick up.
banggod is somewhat reputable
01:24
That stock photo looks like the model is holding the hot bit...
for once. no
tho the smoke and lack of solder concerns me
but ugh
my cheap and cheerful soldering irons have worked well so far
also I kinda have very messy tools, and only solder a few times a year
I should get an electric iron as some point. My current one just runs off butane.
0_0
@MichaelFrank the advantage with something like this is you can set temperatures (like with a proper soldering station)
Exactly!
and with this model, you can actually upgrade the firmware to... play tetris.
I kid, more finegraned temperature controls
01:33
That sounds... useful.
unlike their other product....
this. Is the most overengineered screwdriver I have ever seen
blah
I am trying to talk myself out of ordering one.
I could pretend to be the Doctor with that...
lol
Damnit mr frank. TALK OUT OF. NOT TALK INTO.
I wonder if it has a speaker... if you can customise the firmware, you could probably give it the signature 'sound'... ;)
lol
.....
You sir. Are making a good arguement for bad ideas.
01:40
Okay, so it's $130NZD. I'd rather get a quality set of manual screwdrivers. Like this!
(also I'm half certain none of my existing, and very excellent ifixit bits will work on that)
lol
those are precision screws
Although I'd really prefer an Impacta with a torx bit on it...
Oooh yea, that's a nice looking kit.
That , a common cheap bit driver (for when the electric is out of batteries) and my black and decker electric screwdriver's basically got me covered for everything.

hmm... user has developed a sudden issue when opening pdfs with editable fields.
They no longer display anything in them until she hovers or clicks on them.
03:17
@MichaelFrank try a PC restart
then try checking for updates, sfc /scannow, check for PDF reader updates, and lastly, GPU driver
Yea, the internet seems to think this is solely cause by Preview.app on a Mac...
03:30
oh you didn't mention Mac
does it work in Adobe?
Sorry - this isn't a Mac.
But my quick search online pointed to it being an issues when the pdf is filled out in Preview.
That isn't the case here though.

@Bob Fox's latest words of wisdom...
> you can customize literally everything with a text editor as long as you realize that you are going to be maintaining a fork from then on and i’m not going to answer your pleas for help. good luck, have fun.
06:30
this seems neat, especially if it'll work on the 20 dollar SDRs. I wonder if multiple monitors would mitigate that by making more noise ;p
06:42
well or the fact that you literally need the antenna at "peep over the screen" range
07:30
this seems cool
also ridiculous in the best way

Do anybody know why this code don't work in my this post?

@Bob I find you post here
Just one complaint, the size cannot use the unit samrtable..

yeah but hmc will steal the bounty with a vague answer
12:39
he doesn't say what paging file size has set
doesi t not use the paging file for stuff like this
@Burgi naw, I'd downvote it
if you put a bounty on someone elses question, who 'rewards' the bounty?
The bounty awarder, not the OP
I'd actually use aibobot there

@JourneymanGeek I'd wonder if @BenN knows anything about that tho...
It's the kind of thing he seems to know :D

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\MaxCmds
Applies to Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7, and Windows Vista
The default is 15. This parameter limits the number of outstanding requests on a session. Increasing the value can use more memory, but it can improve performance by enabling a deeper request pipeline. Increasing the value in conjunction with MaxMpxCt can also eliminate errors that are encountered due to large numbers of outstanding long-term file requests, such as FindFirstChangeNotification calls.

they appear to have not relaised, sometimes the managers implement metrics like that, to prove they need said headcount.
'We have 800 tickets to process, we need all the people!'
that said, managers ;D
lol
"We think your work performance isn't good enough cause you wear short sleeves to work"
"whut?"
@djsmiley2k if people are faking metrics to meet metrics...
OMFG! WHY U MAKE ME GOOGLE LOLICON?????
you googled it....
never google anything containing 'loli'

Rocket car?

haha
i like speed but i don't think I could do something like that
@BenN are Microsoft employing cows now?

how can I prevent an asker from following (in my opinion) wrong answers, while mine was down voted (I improved it afterwards) and lack of rep to even add comments?
@c11o You cannot, really
At most you can leave a comment on your own answer or edit it to include why you think the other answers are incorrect
@rahuldottech ok, so I did what I could, thanks
@BenN Hi guru. Do you use Linux?
Afraid not, sorry
Linux has a good option -h for show those size of file with a smart unit, such as GB,MB or KB automatically for better reading
But if I use (ls .\log.ico).Length, I just get a number result 78910 in Powershell
Actually I have made a ugly custom function today. I hope it can be improved and refined.
Ugly, but work
function fileSize(){
    $namemax=(((ls *)|%{$_.name.length})|measure -Maximum).Maximum
    if($args.Count -eq 0){
        $path=(pwd).path
    }
    else{
        $path=$args[0]
    }
    (ls $path)|foreach{if(([IO.FileInfo]($_.FullName)).Attributes -match 'Directory'){
        $len=(gci -File $_.FullName -r -fo -ea Silent|measure -s -p Length).Sum
        if($len -eq $NULL){
            $_.Name+" "*($namemax-($_.Name).Length) + ":"+"0 B"
        }
        else{

Ok, I need to buy bitcoin.
How do I buy bitcoin and then make a bitcoin purchase?
Do I need to have bitcoin software installed?
18:44
Ok, forget it, I think I found another solution.
19:27
Jeez... You picked a poor time to need to buy Bitcoin.
Why?
Is the blockchain offline or something like that?
Price is through the roof at the moment.
I tend to see bitcoin as a commodity rather than as a currency FWIW.
It's far too volatile to be usable for normal day-to-day transactions.
19:42
@bwDraco Aye, there's absolutely no way to have even the vaguest idea how much it's actually going to be worth when you need to spend it.
@c11o - You can always leave comments to your own answer. If your answer received downvotes then continue to improve it.

EKWB's long-awaited modular liquid cooling system is finally here: ekwb.com/news/ek-mlc-phoenix
23:36
@Bob Yeah. Looks very application-dependent.
Intel still relies extensively on product differentiation to get folks to buy more expensive processors. AMD doesn't have this issue and can be much cheaper than comparable Intel parts, but their best isn't as good as Intel's best. Also, AMD's MCM design with Infinity Fabric has limitations that can hurt its performance on workloads that require lots of core-to-core communication.
We really don't have a clear winner. Which processor is better comes down to what you're trying to do with it.
Bob
Bob
23:53
@bwDraco Even "cheaper" is debatable.
> For anyone that is about to shout, “$9,800 of AMD EPYC beats $20,000 of Intel Xeon in SPECrate2017_fp_base” not so fast. 4x $1,900 Intel Xeon Gold 6130 CPUs are $7,600 and handily beat 2x AMD EPYC 7601’s
'course, then you have more sockets (...only an issue if not per-core licensing) and mobo requirements, but at the same time you're not really at a NUMA disadvantage considering AMD's architecture
