The "excuse" is "well, employers don't have to spend so much on those stupid vacations, extra hours, health plans, so they will be able to pay you SO MUCH MORE".
The true outcome is they offer those positions with shitty pay. Obviously.
80 PLUS Titanium power supplies must have 90% power efficiency even at 10% load. 10% load testing is not required for anything below Titanium, but typical efficiency is in the ballpark of 85% for 80 PLUS Gold supplies.
Off power is about 5W, mainly from RGB lighting and attached USB devices.
The old gaming laptop idles at 28-30W, which is more than I expected.
@Burgi Getting wet? Pretty likely, considering water hovers around in the air every time you spill a drink, cough, sneeze, or pee. Or do anything with liquid really. Since you can't wipe it up or anything...
@rahuldottech stuff still absorbs in space, however water on non absorbing materials can 'bounce' or splash it, causing it to seperate into smaller amounts
@rahuldottech It would've truly sucked if I was in a tight budget. I was extremely lucky in that the moment I really needed a job, it kinda just fell on my lap with nearly no effort on my part.
I saw the job posting on twitter, of all places. I use twitter maybe twice a year.
The average candidates per job opening was like 80:1 IIRC. I studied about 0 days, one of the exam subjects I read the contents on the bus going to the exam, and I scored 9/10 or 10/10.
I was so certain I wasn't going to have any passable grades, I performed the exam completely calm.
@Boris_yo I did that for a few months in 2010. It pays a not-terrible amount, but you have to spend literally hours per day looking for job postings, triaging the nonsense, convincing the job authors, competing with other freelancers... It's exausthing.
Why, do you ask? Because that's the license tag in the PC case.
(cont. about freelancing) the site I used back then, freelancer.com, now charges monthly memberships on top of a percentage of your earnings. F@#$ them!

I have the same problem; I close my central heating vent and use my computer exclusively to control the temperature in my room
on a cold winter's day, the computer can generally keep up with the cold outside, meaning my room needs well under 1 KW to match the heat loss from the insulation to the outside
on blisteringly cold freezes I sometimes need to supplement it with a space heater, but that's rare
So... some experimentation with GPU power saving by lowering power target. For some reason, the performance is dramatically lower dropping from 50% power target to the minimum 44.6%. Turns out the memory (which is Micron's new 12 Gbps GDDR5X) is a power hog - dropping it to 11 Gbps gave back some 100 MHz to the GPU core at the same 44.6% power target.
@djsmiley2k problem is, unless you're making like $120k USD per year, it's extremely difficult to move out while a single person in the US. It depends a lot on the area, but if your living expenses are in the top 50% of the country, you're going to be eating Ramen every day if you have a room to yourself, otherwise you'll be sleeping in a bunk with 2-3 other guys
you can be ugly, fat, and stupid, and have an apartment, and you'll be fine
you can be attractive, slim and smart and live with your parents and you're basically screwed (or the opposite of screwed; I don't know, depends on your interpretation of the word)
if you're concerned about heat buildup in your room, probably the best thing is to stop running Furmark, and optimize idle speeds, then don't actually use the GPU for anything :P
or have a way to turn it completely off while it's plugged in and use GT2 on your CPU
It's a powerful card with a lot of complex electronics, GPU and memory and various other DACs and stuff
@bwDraco Yeah, but your netbook is designed for efficiency, your graphics card was designed for brute force with efficiency being a bonus
Compared to older cards I'd consider 10-15W to be damn good
@bwDraco The question becomes how much more would you be willing to pay to have them develop a 99% shutdown card? How much longer would you mind waiting for them to release it? How much slower would you mind it adapting to heavy loads?

At this point, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Apple is just playing catch-up with the Android competition, so these keynotes are starting to feel like smoke and mirrors.
One of my earlier messages paints a much grimmer picture, considering that Samsung is aiming straight for Apple's heart:
