Why does updating apps on IPAD is downloading so slow?
sooooooooslowwwwwww
because apple
That's easy answer. I expected hard cold truth kind of answer.
@Boris_yo It's becoming extremely popular in dev and marketing roles.
The "excuse" is "well, employers don't have to spend so much on those stupid vacations, extra hours, health plans, so they will be able to pay you SO MUCH MORE".
The true outcome is they offer those positions with shitty pay. Obviously.

So the rumors were true... anandtech.com/show/12003/…
AMD integrated graphics on Intel processor? As hard to believe as this may be, it's real.
we were just looking at the monthly contract costs for the iphone 8 and X
£60 per month

lets hope that doesn't become a thing
@Burgi It already is

@ThatBrazilianGuy They cut costs. People get less pay. People can spend less. They cut costs again. And so on... Capitalism will slowly destroy us.
@FML sue them for copyright

@Burgi Can't, posting it on SE made it copywrong

17:25
So... just got my Kill A Watt meter.
Idle load is about 62W, which is much higher than I thought.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Can you take your knowledge online and take jobs from there? RentACoder, Upwork? What other skills do you have? Graphic design?
Okay, code::blocks is actually not bad at all
Peak power draw is about 500W.
80 PLUS Titanium power supplies must have 90% power efficiency even at 10% load. 10% load testing is not required for anything below Titanium, but typical efficiency is in the ballpark of 85% for 80 PLUS Gold supplies.
Off power is about 5W, mainly from RGB lighting and attached USB devices.
The old gaming laptop idles at 28-30W, which is more than I expected.

17:57
@Burgi Getting wet? Pretty likely, considering water hovers around in the air every time you spill a drink, cough, sneeze, or pee. Or do anything with liquid really. Since you can't wipe it up or anything...
@FML Yeah, but afaik, the water won't get absorbed by the paper either, it'll just bounce off
I could be wrong though
Continuous peak power on the gaming laptop under torture test workloads is 192W.
user226528
18:13
"FML"? Huh. Well, I say this is definitely an upgrade over your last user name.
The Bifrons netbook, on the other hand, idles at just 4 W (battery charging stopped, 40% brightness).
Load power is about 7-10W.
So, Astaroth is far more power-hungry than I thought it would be.
At least I can switch off the whole station while the system in sleep and still resume as before, since hybrid sleep is enabled.
18:29
@ThatBrazilianGuy That sucks :/
18:49
@rahuldottech stuff still absorbs in space, however water on non absorbing materials can 'bounce' or splash it, causing it to seperate into smaller amounts
@djsmiley2k ah
the best things are hydrophobic things...
wehn it eventually laods :/
See you guys next week month year...
@rahuldottech It would've truly sucked if I was in a tight budget. I was extremely lucky in that the moment I really needed a job, it kinda just fell on my lap with nearly no effort on my part.
I saw the job posting on twitter, of all places. I use twitter maybe twice a year.
The average candidates per job opening was like 80:1 IIRC. I studied about 0 days, one of the exam subjects I read the contents on the bus going to the exam, and I scored 9/10 or 10/10.
I was so certain I wasn't going to have any passable grades, I performed the exam completely calm.
19:08
@ThatBrazilianGuy o.0
@Boris_yo I did that for a few months in 2010. It pays a not-terrible amount, but you have to spend literally hours per day looking for job postings, triaging the nonsense, convincing the job authors, competing with other freelancers... It's exausthing.
Is that 1 TB?
@Boris_yo 1.7 GB. Brand new Windows 7 Install.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Oh you're good then. Just a few hours.
Why, do you ask? Because that's the license tag in the PC case.
(cont. about freelancing) the site I used back then, freelancer.com, now charges monthly memberships on top of a percentage of your earnings. F@#$ them!
19:10
@ThatBrazilianGuy What other skills do you have besides development and progamming?
They charge freelancers membership fee now?
Dafuq...
@ThatBrazilianGuy nice - when i got my job, i corrected the text in the exam
;D
@djsmiley2k You sound like you put them to shame...
it was a really old test to be fair
and it was written by people who didn't have a clue
I actually helped putting together a newer test
just before leaving the service desk (hopefully forever)
@ThatBrazilianGuy Bishes... Why won't employers and freelancers share that fee at least?
19:14
I might go through and visit them tomorrow
The most basic plan lets you offer your services 15 times per month. That's not enough for a single day.
also I made a little bit of a mess with a stupid system at work, which caused rather a lot of problems
but my ... non-boss senior collegue seems to have covered for me, for some reason
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol so a site selling service X to customers Y, limits how many times X can actually occur? Nice.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Depends on project you successfully applied for. If that's $10,000 project then isn't it worthwhile?
@Boris_yo sorry, you'#ve visited 15 web pags today, come back tomorrow</your isp>
@Boris_yo To be honest, I don't consider myself a proper developer / programmer yet. I have basic understanding of a lot of things, but not deep understanding of much.
@Boris_yo You can try 15 times. Not picked up any time? Wanna try more? Sorry, pay us.
19:17
@ThatBrazilianGuy this (with some exceptions)
@djsmiley2k That's 15 bids. Not page views :D
yus but the ideai s the same
ok, you made 15 GET / requests
@djsmiley2k They charge the freelancers and the also charge whoever hires the freelancers. They win every time.
the fact that 8 of them timed out? not our problem
@ThatBrazilianGuy the site will die, others will appear
@djsmiley2k Actually they bought a few competitors.
19:18
more will appear
maybe you can make one
and they'll buy it
The whole freelancer.com/odesk/etc model is unfair to freelancers (Don't get me started on fiverr).
and you can be rich too
why?
can you make a site that isn't?
@djsmiley2k You jest, but you don't get rich working, but exploit ahem leveraging* the work of others.
See Uber, AirBnb, etc
oh i know
that's what i was saying
make your own site, become successful, become billionaire
easy right
It's a big challenge. To say the least.
I could, dunno... Start a pyramid scheme? A church? All churches here are exempt from taxes!

And big churches' bigwigs become politicians.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Move to Estonia. You will get paid 1500-2000 Euros per month. They desperately need devs/progs that they import human resources from abroad and issuing work visa.
@Boris_yo Hm. How is the cost of living in Estonia?
> Official languages: Estonian
Ma ei räägi eesti keelt :(
Rent 200 EUROs / month. Bread 0.70-0.90cents, milk 1L 0.80c, bananas 0.80c, ice cream 2-4 EUROs, 20 eggs 2.50 EUROs etc. Meat and milk are not expensive.
10 EUROs per day will suffice. If workplace has meals on them, then 5 EUROs per day if not less.
> milk 1L 0.80c
That's... cheaper than here! 0.o
But I don't speak estonian =/
@ThatBrazilianGuy We have milk for 1.40 EUROs in Israel.
@ThatBrazilianGuy English should suffice.
19:33
@Boris_yo You live in Israel?
It's Estonian, Russian and English there.
Yes.
@Boris_yo Hm. Tell me more about it... Where can I find job listings for Estonia?
Discover what working in Estonia means on YouTube: youtube.com/results?search_query=work+in+estonia
I will read about it.
Gotta go, appointment with the doctor.
Bye
19:41
I should sleep
Goodnight, folks.

20:05
i bought my girlfriend a chromecast
So, @BenN, I'm kinda shocked at Astaroth's power consumption. It's making me want to just put the system to sleep even if I'm away for a few minutes.
At least I have ways to keep power use in check while gaming, but still...
Ideas?
she was sceptical but i showed her how to cast spotify, youtube and netflix from her ipad...
I know virtually nothing about hardware, sorry :(
as a result, apparently i am the best boyfriend in the known universe
I'm already using an 80 PLUS Titanium power supply FWIW.
20:08
just need to figure out where to download and print my certificate saying so and i'll update my cv... ;)
@Burgi You may need to generate one... Have her noterize it as the official registrar of girlfriends
hehe
Must be nice to be appreciated!
there were.... "benefits"
Like free medical and dental care?
20:11
@allquixotic, any hints on managing power usage?
I fixed HKCU corruption, GPU driver corruption, internet connectivity (about 6 times), keyboard connectivity, and a few other dribs and drabs for parents or people at work over the past month and barely got a single Thanks
@CanadianLuke if you can call that dental care, probably so
@CanadianLuke loosely defined as "medical"
but guys who are taken apparently live longer, so I guess medical care qualifies as well
@bwDraco 1. don't own a "Ti" GPU
oh wait
@bwDraco its a desktop, right?
20:13
Yes.
why are you worrying about power consumption then?
Custom build; see specs here
eat as much yummy electricity as the socket can provide
@Burgi because he does his computer like this guy does his car
Because, among other things, my room has a tendency to trap heat, and electricity in New York City is very expensive.
20:14
everything has to be customized and optimized "just so"
fair enough
20:40
1. move out
2. \o/
weait
waiit
it's like 4C outside
so by that guess, it must b e like -20C in new york right now
FIRE THAT SUCKER UP
I have the same problem; I close my central heating vent and use my computer exclusively to control the temperature in my room
on a cold winter's day, the computer can generally keep up with the cold outside, meaning my room needs well under 1 KW to match the heat loss from the insulation to the outside
on blisteringly cold freezes I sometimes need to supplement it with a space heater, but that's rare
So... some experimentation with GPU power saving by lowering power target. For some reason, the performance is dramatically lower dropping from 50% power target to the minimum 44.6%. Turns out the memory (which is Micron's new 12 Gbps GDDR5X) is a power hog - dropping it to 11 Gbps gave back some 100 MHz to the GPU core at the same 44.6% power target.
@djsmiley2k problem is, unless you're making like $120k USD per year, it's extremely difficult to move out while a single person in the US. It depends a lot on the area, but if your living expenses are in the top 50% of the country, you're going to be eating Ramen every day if you have a room to yourself, otherwise you'll be sleeping in a bunk with 2-3 other guys
(using Assassin's Creed Origins, so not the most reliable test - will do some FurMark testing in a bit)
@allquixotic same in the UK, was kinda a joke :/
i feel @bwDraco's pain tho
in the summer this room is terrible
in the winter, i need the PC to RUN HOOTTTER
20:46
We get caught in a nasty catch-22: can't afford to move out, and no girl on the planet is interested unless you have your own place
then the girls there suck
The biggest turnoff isn't being ugly or fat or stupid; it's living with your parents
@Burgi's girlfriend was happy with a chromecast!
you can be ugly, fat, and stupid, and have an apartment, and you'll be fine
you can be attractive, slim and smart and live with your parents and you're basically screwed (or the opposite of screwed; I don't know, depends on your interpretation of the word)
well I guess I remembered why I left this room in first place
sorry @rahuldottech
20:48
@djsmiley2k true, but a Chromecast does not a home make
Yup. Power-limited performance measurably improves when I drop the memory clock.
if you're concerned about heat buildup in your room, probably the best thing is to stop running Furmark, and optimize idle speeds, then don't actually use the GPU for anything :P
or have a way to turn it completely off while it's plugged in and use GT2 on your CPU
It was just a brief test.
@allquixotic There's no IGP on Ryzen.
oh right
And GPU power consumption at idle is pretty low.
20:53
well then...
Hmm... GPU-Z is reporting 5-6% TDP power at idle, about 15W on a 280W card. That's not trivial.
@bwDraco Seems reasonably trivial to me...
15W is more than twice of what my netbook draws under normal use conditions.
It's a powerful card with a lot of complex electronics, GPU and memory and various other DACs and stuff
@bwDraco Yeah, but your netbook is designed for efficiency, your graphics card was designed for brute force with efficiency being a bonus
Compared to older cards I'd consider 10-15W to be damn good
@bwDraco The question becomes how much more would you be willing to pay to have them develop a 99% shutdown card? How much longer would you mind waiting for them to release it? How much slower would you mind it adapting to heavy loads?
Hmm...
Yeah, you have a point.
Don't have exact power numbers for my father's old desktop, but will take a closer look in a bit.
21:07
It's all compromise. Everything in the tech world is.
Well, Bifrons (the netbook) can take minutes to do things Astaroth does in a matter of seconds.
They're completely different classes of systems.
@allquixotic Already saw that.
holy moly... red+blue

So the rumors were true... https://www.anandtech.com/show/12003/intel-to-create-new-8th-generation-cpus-wit‌h-amd-radeon-graphics-with-hbm2-using-emib
21:12
@allquixotic Gives Intel an excuse to dump their somewhat lacklustre GPU cores and outsource the development.
Pity.
@bwDraco Idle power consumption of an old ATI is around 50W (with multi monitor setup): tomshardware.co.uk/…
Wow.
It's okay on single, but wow. Multi is bad.
The graphics card on Father's machine is a Kepler card, namely a GT 640.
And I suspect that K8 processor is crap at saving power.
@allquixotic it helps if you have a car
@bwDraco 640 is apparently quite good, nice chart here showing all the idles for quite a range: techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GT_640/26.html
A GTX 480 was beefy at ~50W idle
21:20
The GT 640 is a pretty good card from what I can tell, but the platform's base power consumption is probably crap.
Anything from the Kepler generation on is generally very efficient at idle.
(Fermi was infamous for being very inefficient)
Holy Carp! That's only single monitor, on a multi monitor the 480 draws 127W at idle!
I'm happy with 10-15W idle. It's fine.
21:40
@Burgi a bit
this leads to a more general conclusion that your Credit Rating is a bit more than just a credit rating :P
if only SE rep counted
i admit once you hit the big three zero, having a car rapidly loses appeal to girls your age
I hope the Intel/Radeon SIP makes its way into a Macbook
that would be a cool upgrade for me

At this point, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Apple is just playing catch-up with the Android competition, so these keynotes are starting to feel like smoke and mirrors.
One of my earlier messages paints a much grimmer picture, considering that Samsung is aiming straight for Apple's heart:
Sep 17 at 3:02, by bwDraco
The moment Apple is no longer able to assert a significant technological advantage in their latest flagship product, they will no longer be able to demand the sorts of prices they currently can, and investors will rapidly sell off their AAPL stock.
22:53
@Mokubai which they randomly do - they did have atoms with powervr for a bit.
@JourneymanGeek At the time, Intel's IGPs were far less mature and just could not scale down that easily.
@bwDraco or up in this case
Problem is, Intel has had little success with Iris.
