@rahuldottech this is what I have, though I paid less (3.59usd, and when I bought only 20cm was available)
actually IDK if this is 20cm
nope seems more like ~25cm
I should get a proper measuring thingy
I have one strapped to the lid of my laptop, see picture from yesterday
actually the method I used was quite open to bad data so... off to gimp and pixel sizing!
Bob
Bob
@Avery I have basically the same thing, 'cept from Amazon :P
Costs more, but... less chance of dodgy :P
eh, it works.
Bob
Bob
@Avery I've had enough trouble with these kinds of thing that I'd make a distinction between "seems to work" and "works reliably over sustained transfers"
15:17
I used it for extended periods of big data transfers as a drive I own is dying and it works perfectly
Bob
Bob
ya, not saying it definitely won't, but just not my first port of call :P
the first thing they sacrifice is QC. I remember buying a few USB cables, which worked fine. bought more from the same seller, and one out of ten worked at all
if the price difference is greater, though...
*grumbles about $50 adapters locally*
actually, speaking of. how long does shipping usually take for you, @Avery?
actually I checked
by checked I mean this
I have a 20cm one, yeah, at least the cable part.
With the heads it does come to 35cm tho
@Bob avg 14 days after shipping for china post registered mail
avg 20 for china post air mail
Bob
Bob
@Avery business days?
no
it depends on seller though
Bob
Bob
mhm
I've seen anywhere from 2 weeks to 5 weeks
then there was that outlier at 3 months...
15:25
i've had packages that took 40+ days to arrive with china post registered mail but also had orders that arrive in 6 days with china post registered mail
Checking reviews help.
> An iPhone is a smart purchase because you know you’ll get excellent hardware that won’t slow down in years, you know you’ll get excellent software that will be supported for years, you know you’ll get excellent customer service that will help you for years, and you know that iPhone you bought will retain its value for many years. iPhone’s hold their value very well and they sell easily. You can get quite a chunk of change back if you ever choose to sell your iPhone in the future. Android phones in comparison do not hold their value well, they depreciate in value quickly and are more harde
I've got to admit, there's at least some truth to this
@rahuldottech what if I enjoy fighting with my device
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech I... don't buy devices to sell.
@Avery For whatever reason, the majority of the population does not
Bob
Bob
It's not even a consideration.
15:26
@Bob I don't either
I'm talking about the other bit
> An iPhone is a smart purchase because you know you’ll get excellent hardware that won’t slow down in years, you know you’ll get excellent software that will be supported for years, you know you’ll get excellent customer service that will help you for years, and you know that iPhone you bought will retain its value for many years.
well
iPhones do slow down
Android phones rarely ever last more than two years
and software is not really excellent
@Avery It isn't for us geeks
it's very restrictive
15:28
It is pretty darn good enough for the general public
and it doesn't make sense for non-geeks
@Avery Oh, it does
if all you do is get online and send snaps and whatsapp and instagram and facebook then you don't need a phone that costs 2000usd
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech ...rarely ever?
how so?
and good luck going outside with your upper class friends while having an old iphone as it'll lose the coolness factor the moment next one is announced
15:29
@Bob Especially the mid-range ones
They don't. No updates, no crash fixes
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech soooo. you're comparing the longevity of a mid-range android phone to a mid-range iphone, right?
ohwait.
@Bob No
What I'm saying is
OPO is still maintained
and it is years old
and it was a high end phone
it just comes down to knowing what phone to buy
As far as non-geeks are concerned, apple is wayyy more streamlined
Oh, got a new iPhone? Log in to iCloud and BAM, everything is there already
Bob
Bob
@Avery tbf it's not even that, pick any major brand's flagship (~ iphone price range) and it's typically fairly well supported these days
15:30
yeah
Bob
Bob
samsung, sony, lg, ...
also like
@Bob Yeah, except when it explodes. That kind of stuff doesn't inspire confidence in the general public.
there's no android flagships that cost upwards of 2000usd
(I'm saying 2000usd because that's what iphone x will cost in turkey, TY taxes)
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech yes, except when there's a battery defect that has absolutely nothing to do with the phone manufacturer nor the operating system
15:31
@Bob We get that. Good luck explaining that to the public. When they get a phone, they expect it to work reliably. And who the hell can blame them?
Bob
Bob
@Avery eh, note8 is up there
oh and
let's not do us/theming please
@Bob it's 500usd I think
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech funny thing about that. s/icloud/google/
@Avery 1500aud rrp here
I think iphone x was supposed to be similar?
AUD is closer to CAD than it is to USD
1500 aud is 1201usd
Bob
Bob
@Avery well, 900-950usd msrp apparently
15:33
still much less than what iphone x will cost here
ps @rahuldottech check this out
Bob
Bob
iphone x is 1500-1800 (256gb) rrp in aus
yay for live numbers
Bob
Bob
granted, there is no >64gb note8
@Avery whatisthat
Bob
Bob
which is odd... you'd think they'd be happy to charge more for a minor storage upgrade :P
15:35
@rahuldottech I have a discord bot called avebot
I used to have this bland site for reasons, but I added live stats coming directly from the bot yesterday
it's p cool imo
@Avery technically, it should be "... x people on y servers..."
Bob
Bob
@Avery how much does the note8 cost over there, anyway?
@rahuldottech aaaaaa
High Sierra GM!
4999try
iphone x costs 6999try
15:36
@Avery just get the iPhone 8 Plus :P that's what I'm doing
the X is overpriced and not even that good (lots of breaking changes, no touch ID, bad UX)
Bob
Bob
@Avery oof, that's a big difference
@allquixotic oh yea, did you see above - I got the 960 installed :D
@allquixotic why even buy an iphone, just get an OP or pixel or smth
@Bob Samsung 960 Pro?
Bob
Bob
not that it affects everyday perf much, but moving away from TLC for my main drive is nice
Bob
Bob
15:38
@allquixotic yup
yesterday, by Bob
user image
@Avery heh, he actually likes apple gear ;)
Bob
Bob
probably the best I'll see, short of Optane :P
I mean
I see no reason to go with 8
when 7 looks pmuch the same and 6 does too buy also has a headphone jack
and like, it's a phone. I don't need all the crazy power 7 or 8 has, hell, I don't even need 6's all processing power tbh.
Bob
Bob
tbh I spend a lot more time on my phone than on my pc
I do too, especially on schooldays
but it's not like I can run an IDE on a phone
Bob
Bob
15:42
oh yea, @allquixotic, did you have a desktop mac?
@Avery also, AveBot has handled
I WROTE THOSE AT 4AM
And it's probably better if you replace "people" with "users"
@Bob the last time I had a desktop mac was a Core 2 Mac Mini with 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HDD, at a time when Core 2 was the latest available Mac Mini (so, 2010?)
@Avery lol, it's okayy
15:44
I briefly had a 15" MBP with Touchbar and Radeon Pro 460, but I returned that for a full refund
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech soooooo users are not people? :D
3
^ star that pls
5
the only Mac I have is a 13" Skylake MBP with Touchbar, Core i7-6567U
@Avery Alsoo (last one, I swear) "answered to z commands"
oh and my mom has a 13" Broadwell MBP without Touchbar, Core i5-something (Iris graphics)
@Bob No, but it sounds weird in the context
Bob
Bob
15:45
@allquixotic oh, you did end up on a touchbar one?
how's that working out for you?
@rahuldottech refresh
@Avery perfect :D
@Bob Yes, I bought the Touchbar 13" not long after it came out, then hesitated a long time (way after the point of no returns), got the 15" thinking I would upgrade to that, then got pissed off that my brand new 15" got superceded in the market with Kaby Lake MBPs and returned it :D
Bob
Bob
I wonder if said touchbar might've been more effective above/under the screen (vertical) rather than above the keyboard (horizontal)
@Avery "Licensed under MIT" :P
15:46
I don't especially like the touchbar, but it works fine, and it's pretty convenient for changing volume and screen brightness, but is it better than keys? meh
@rahuldottech you know what? I'm giving you repo access
the only fun thing I did with it was run nyan cat on it
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ... ... I suddenly had an impulse to buy a macbook just for that
I'd say the touchbar is a wash, but the 6567U is quite good, and basically identical (at least in GPU perf) to the 7567U Kaby Lake model, so I'm basically using the best available Intel GPU
@Avery haha, I'll take a look and fix all the english-y stuff after exams
15:48
it runs SWTOR in a Parallels VM on low detail at 1440x900 at around 50 FPS
60 FPS native Windows
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I rather like touchscreens on modern laptops
Bob
Bob
but the fingerprints do get annoying
yeah
screens get dirty
Bob
Bob
hm. I should see if there's oleophobic sprays
@allquixotic gaming in a vm? risky :P
15:49
@Bob risky?
@Bob that would be a horrible thing to spray on a cat; they would never be able to get their fur to feel just right again
(just had that random thought)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic well, not in terms of damage or anything. just... idk
Bob
Bob
oof, $15 for 3ml of coating liquid
@allquixotic a bit of a weird thing to try, maybe :P
then again, I've not tried VM gaming since c2d ~2010
@Bob they optimized the hell out of it in Parallels on Mac
somehow the overhead is much lower than I'd expect
Bob
Bob
16:11
soooo. they're still at it :P
@Bob I no longer care :D
I'm an AT&T wireless user (1 phone per household member + 1 backup/emergency hotspot), no Verizon Wireless, and FiOS for all home internet
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic oh, you dropped verizon wireless?
guess that makes sense, what with the fibre connection :P
Alright so I shredded that part of my laptop... And it's actually hard to tell.
16:27
@Bob yeah, those grandfathered UDPs don't have much value anyway, they're basically 100 GB/month capped plans and now there are true unlimited plans
*which you won't get DC'ed from as long as you don't roam too much
Bob
Bob
I just bought $50 of oleophobic coatings
*waits a month*
@Bob they have medicines for oleophobia, you know
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic or watch 4k video, apparently
@Bob nice
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic they have 480p-only and 720p-maybe-1080p on the unlimited plans now
16:29
They don't work. I bought a few dozen dollars worth before.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic detergent? :P
@CircusCat I feel like there's better ways to mutilate your laptop without creating a lap mutilation hazard
I just now regularly replace shitty bad fitting screen protectors on my S7 to get a consistent oleophobic coating
oleophobia must suck if you live in a town where most jobs are in the oil refining industry
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat welp. guess I'll find out for myself soon :P
16:30
@Bob I'm away from my normal homeless home so no access to my usual tools
it's like being arachnophobic and living in a town where most jobs involve letting spiders crawl over you
@Bob which brand did you buy?
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat Edge. Curved Edge. Screen protector? What screen protector? :(
I mean it works it just lasts like 5 days before it wears off again.
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat Uhh... Proteger and Fusso.
16:31
@Bob lol even the flat ones are bad.
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat The glass ones worked pretty well on my G4, though some cheaper ones failed on the slight screen curve
Bob
Bob
oof
The only ones I've found that fit the curve well are ones with shitty tape adhesive and gluing them with LOCA works but is a bitch to remove.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic So, Australia? :P
16:32
@Bob lol
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat Which brand did you use?
@Bob ah I used the Fusso stuff. Was going to try a different cheaper no name brand off eBay but just switched to screen protectors instead
Bob
Bob
The only three I could find were Proteger (JA), Fusso (JA) and Dynaflo (US)
@CircusCat I'm buying both off eBay :P
No one seems to sell the Dynaflo ones anymore :\
Best test for oleophobic coating effectiveness... Spray bottle of water or IPA
Bob
Bob
Fusso is on Amazon. Proteger is eBay only.
@CircusCat Water, yes. Apparently IPA removes the coating :\
But yea I just tested mine (no extra coating over 1.5yr old stock) with water and it completely failed, so I'm buying some.
16:34
actually I haven't literally canceled my VZW yet, I'm on hold with them now to recover my password, then I'll port over a number to AT&T, then cancel
@Bob not the original stuff
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat Oh, a local company still sells Dynaflo ones... might try that later if the others fail.
The coating that comes on factory fitted screens and oleophobic screen protectors isn't removed by IPA. I dunno about the coat it yourself stuff.
Just finding proper oleophobic screen protectors is a PITA as it is. Tried three different types on my Z5C, none have a proper costing. 3/4 on my S7 do though and 3/3 on my S4 did.
The Estuff Titanshield is the best I've found so far for oleophobic coating quality but it's expensive and hard to get hold of and the wrong type.
Urgh. And Opengur is broken.
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat Yea, I think it shouldn't be, but manufacturers tend to recommend against using IPA because of that coating.
My Xperia still has most of its coating.
Well, water is beading on it anyway.
@Bob interesting. Never seen a manufacturer mention it myself.
Bob
Bob
16:44
@CircusCat Apple's the most well-known example.
@Bob I just use IPA because I still have a spray bottle of IPA I bought in Australia. I don't have a water spray bottle.
Bob
Bob
lol
@Bob well that explains it. I never buy anything apple.
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat I haven't really IPA'd my screen, but I use it often to dry out the USB port after water accidents.
Using it on the screen a bit more now though, since wiping doesn't take off oil anymore
not that it matters; I think my coating is all gone now
@Bob I tend to find it lasts a few months on phones personally.
Bob
Bob
16:46
@CircusCat yea I'm well past that point
I'm also planning to put some on my glasses :P
That's on a good phone screen. And this is on a shitty lying about having an oleophobic coating screen protector:
@Bob oh I hadn't thought of that. But good idea. I usually get my glasses done with the coating at the factory but I'm missing it on one pair.
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat I'm not sure my normal pair has it... never asked
probably not considering the smudges :P
And that's on the cheap two for £1 screen protector on my S7. It's there, but inconsistent. Still works though.
It's so satisfying having a really good oleophobic coating in the shower, tilt the phone slightly and it's like it's got magical water repellent.
Water just bounced off it like there's a force field or something.
Bob
Bob
so looks like they agree with you about fusso wearing off
and the proteger one is likely a wash
bleh
maybe I should try the dynaflo?
how hard can it be to get a coating
17:03
Where's Psychogeek?
Halloey?
@Bob interesting. Never actually checked that many reviews but glad to see I'm not alone.
Laptop screens I'd expect to wear a lot more slowly than phone screens anyway (it doesn't get rubbed against shite in your pocket 16 hours a day after all) and the same with glasses.
@CircusCat What happened with coating?
I wonder what happens if you heat treat it yourself
@Boris_yo it never existed
@CircusCat On my old Nexus 4 I kept factory screen protector. Not really protector I guess but something that you are supposed to get rid of and replace with real screen protector. After year or two using smartphone it had same thing as your on photo.
I was reluctant to order new screen protector and mess with application so I left factory one on.
Anyone familiar with Meh and what they are selling?
17:20
> Step 3: You are drunk and do not drive home If you can sleep in their unused bedding, please politely ask your master. Thank you very much for your host
seems shaky
"ask your master" seems like uh
I won't comment on it.
Right so chopped up my laptop to fit a bigger drive in. Bit of a squeeze with the caddy, it fits but compresses to much for comfort, so I just blu-tacked the drive into the bay. Hope it doesn't come loose...
Seems like a bit to much space without the caddy
17:40
@rahuldottech I suppose I'm lucky then. Mine is at least 3 1/2.
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill that was an... interesting... message out of context
I was wondering whether to get a smart tv. It's not for me - I just use my computer. It's for my room rental.
I'm not sure if it's on topic on SU, but I've seen some questions about this.
If anyone here is knowledgeable on the topic, I'd be glad to learn about the pros and cons.
It's not on topic as it's opinion based
@Avery No, not that actual question. I meant the topic of smart TVs.
17:52
@FaheemMitha Smart TVs are not really on topic (unless it is connected to your computer)
@DavidPostill Ok.
Well, can I still ask about them here?
@FaheemMitha You can, whether anyone here can answer is another matter ...
What's your question?
@Avery Whether it's a good idea to buy a smart TV.
opinion based
off topic
17:54
I don't really know anything about the technology.
well I don't watch tv so
a guy I know who works in a Sprint call center said they had 960,000 requests to preorder the iPhone X on the day it was announced, and they are still experiencing very long hold times for chat and phone due to so many people calling
I use my computer to watch TV. But for a room rental, a TV is expected. I suppose I could put an actual computer in there, and it wouldn't cost much more.
unrelatedly, AT&T's chat system blocks SSNs typed as 123-45-6789 from the representative seeing them, but you can omit the dashes and it works ... wtf
lol
@allquixotic TBH the iPhone X is the first iPhone I'd actually be interested in buying
17:58
@allquixotic This is madness...
@FaheemMitha Smart TV is a convenience. You can watch YouTube on it, surf on the internet and mirror your smartphone/tablet to it.
@Boris_yo So, sort of like a tv with a browser included?
My bro has LG Smart TV with not regular remote. It has accelerometer or gyroscope or whatever that senses your hand position and acts as a pointer. Very fast to navigate and select what you need.
Sounds possibly abusable, if used for short term rentals. Is it easy to wipe?
I suppose there is a hard drive in there.
No hard drive. No need to wipe.
@Boris_yo Wow. That does sound handy.
@Boris_yo So no persistent storage?
18:01
Yes, make sure you get that remote. Makes life easier.
I didn't check thoroughly. I don't think there is a storage.
@Boris_yo ok.
@Boris_yo Does that remote have a name?
All these smart TVs appear to accelerate picture. The playback is very smooth as if those TVs turn 30 framers per second play into 60 frames per second.
@Boris_yo Interesting.
The one I used is first on the left.
@Boris_yo Thank you.
18:04
It's like Nintendo WII nunchucks...
You move and cursor moves.
@Boris_yo No idea what that is.
I mean you move hand and cursor moves that way.
A video game, no doubt.
@Boris_yo ok
18:22
> We are currently experiencing higher than normal call volumes.
The 24/7 status of all cellular providers in the US for at least 1 week after a juicy new iPhone is released
Bob
Bob
18:49
@allquixotic IME it's the 24/365 status
There's no end to new smartphones, hardware... Consumerism is an ongoing phase where products must be pumped continuously to keep it up and video game developers must be pushing boundaries and raising the bar for hardware (smartphones) to maintain demand. Are software developers and hardware makers in cahoots? Who knows...
@Bob nah; I did several phone transactions with Verizon and AT&T mid-year (May? June?) and never got that
@Boris_yo Yes, they definitely are in "cahoots" -- software developers are always writing new software that just barely fits within the performance profile of the latest hardware to justify buying new hardware (and software) :)
This is called change; without it, we'd all be using desktop systems with 360 KB of RAM with no laptops or smartphones

@allquixotic Yeah but game developers could have games optimized today that would still run okay on older hardware?
Or on specs lower than they advertise for.

@BenN my automated deploy scripts are in powershell :D
:D
I use remoting
21:01
Very nice!
21:24
basically my powershell scripts involve: mvn package, then use remoting to copy some WAR and EAR files around to different servers, then net stop / net start some Windows Services (WebSphere Liberty)
each step is optional (oh, also includes an optional git commit with an Automated build commit message :P) and I get to decide which servers to push to, too
I should probably write one powershell script with command line options, but instead I wrote several top-level scripts that call a number of lower level worker scripts depending on how much needs to get done to meet the top-level goal
You could probably merge it all into one file without much more work by just making the lower scripts into functions
You could specify whether to do certain tasks with switch parameters
As an added bonus of using a param block, you get tab completion on your script file
hey, I don't actually know this (I should), but on a Windows Server that's usually headless unless I'm RDP'ed in, when I create a new remoting session as my logged-in user (it uses SSO to automatically authenticate me as my user account), does it run my commands in a session with GUI interactivity, or does it use session 0 or headless something?
and does the behavior change depending on whether I'm currently RDP'ed into the remote server or not?
I don't actually know, but I would speculate that it creates a new session (possibly as the BATCH type?) and runs some process there
I'm pretty sure the behavior would not change based on the RDP state
21:30
ahh
session ID used, and whether GUI interactivity is allowed or not, makes a big difference in the design of the system I'm implementing :o
Alternatively it might not create a new session at all, and some service might magic a token into existence for you and spawn a new process in session 0
In any case, I would suggest not relying on it being a GUI-enabled session
then I'll just have to login manually and start one of my services from the command line as a non-windows-service
Does this program need user interaction, or does it just rely on there being a desktop for it?

2 hours later…

23:38
AARGH, cereal is getting so expensive!
We don't usually buy cereal, but one box we bought (Kellogg's Raisin Bran Crunch Apple Strawberry) had a regular price of $4.99 for 14.5 oz.
Now, this is a premium cereal, but I really don't like the odd box size.
@FaheemMitha apparently quite a lot of them suck. Also, tend to monitor what you do... so do your homework first.
Personally I just stuck a spare NUC with openelec on our TV
If they kept the old box sizes of, say, 18 to 20 ounces, the price would be untenably high. I would not pay $6.99 for a box of cereal even if the box contained more product than what we see today.
Aug 25 '15 at 23:08, by DragonLord
Keeping an old, large package size and raising the price instead of shrinking it and keeping the same price (as is common practice) would eventually lead to very high prices that would turn all but the wealthiest consumers away ($10 cereal box, anyone?).
Your thoughts?
At the far high end, Kashi cereals are sold in boxes as small as 9.5 oz yet can cost almost $5 a box.
Most Americans cannot pay $10 for a box of cereal, hence the shrinking box sizes.
I don't really like the way food prices are going.
It is so hard just to make ends meet these days...
23:56
Hello all
I see it's the usual suspects ...;)
Hello
Do you know anything about making previously bootable drives boot again?
oh and about the cereals: they can be shrinking sizes to fight obesity and the content doesn't really determine the price. As with EVERYTHING, it's labor costs that are the biggest piece of the costpie.
