@bwDraco You have at least one dead link in that answer. ;)

Q: How to close the question that you had answer already?

Lahiru Madushan I have a question about my Super User post: Windows 10 Creator Update Version 1703 I have get the answer i was expected so how can i close this question?

Is it a cultural thing that they want to delete their Q/A after they get it answered? Like a cat covering their poop....
it's a common thing I've seen a lot on SE
@allquixotic Interesting example...
02:18
@allquixotic I think a lot of folks don't get the big picture behind SE
@JourneymanGeek SE is for answering questions for me.
@MichaelFrank Big Picture - basically build a big ol knowledge base of everything
Answering questions ... is kind of part of the process
@JourneymanGeek OH yea, I totally know that.
Do you think the big picture is lost to most regular users though?
02:47
@MichaelFrank Corrected. I'm not sure how an invalid link (related to chess FWIW) crept into the answer...

3 hours later…
05:46
Okay, so turns out that if my server has to deal with 2mb of transfers a second, it'll add up to 5.2 TB a month. Holy crap.
05:59
ooh, got my tiny kickstarter phone
Bob

06:32
@JourneymanGeek which one?
@Bob the jelly
@JourneymanGeek whoa! How is it?
Fun fact:The macbook pro only has USB-C ports, but the iPhone X ships with a lightning to USB-A cable, so you need an adapter to charge an Apple phone from an Apple laptop.
@rahuldottech screen quality is bad, but its tiny

@JourneymanGeek dead already? huh.
Well, its pining for the fjords

A: Are more mobile app review or moderation features coming?

Kasra RahjerdiTo put it bluntly, no and no. New feature work on the apps has pretty much been frozen for the time being. Even if/when feature work resumes, I don't know if we'll ever reach a point where we're implementing moderator features, unless the narrative around the apps change dramatically. I've bee...

Me: Oh, so you like tech?
Girl: Yeah, I do some stuff...
Me: Tell me something about yourself.
Girl: I keep meticulous backups.
Me: *gasp* *nerdgasm*
This never happens :/
dude you already have a GF
@Burgi This was just a hypothetical conversation
My GF is amazing at coding, btw :)
Bob
Bob
This is what happens when you floof up a MBR2GPT
and then realise a live restore tries to convert your MBR backup to GPT too. dammit acronis
so, offline restore it is
09:14
why @Bob
How hard is it to master Linux? My IT friend from Eastern Europe says that if I will be Linux god I will find a lot of job opportunities...
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k hm?
He said that Linux is a shitload to learn...
@Bob what did you do to your mbr?!
@Boris_yo master it? lol yeah, that's hard
i've been doing linux related things for 10 years plus
it's not hard to bodge stuff tho!!
@djsmiley2k Bodge = Patch?
@djsmiley2k Is it so open ended that it's that hard?
09:26
@Boris_yo if you want to learn, choose a end objective such as 'I want to run a DNS server' and learn how to do that
don't go 'i want to learn linux'
@Boris_yo a badly thought out fix
@Boris_yo days to learn, a lifetime to master
@Boris_yo its like learning to run
@JourneymanGeek Is knowledge of Linux among system administrator's obligations?
a baby could do it. Its a little tougher to beat hussein bolt
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k I gpt'd it
@Boris_yo its useful, but depends on what sort of sysadmin you are.
09:31
@Bob erm, why D:
Bob
Bob
no one is a master of linux. not even Linus himself

@djsmiley2k I'll be moving to nvme soon. might as well gpt it
actually the gpt bit worked like a charm
@Bob very wise master, very wise.
@Bob fair enuf
10:10
A moderator might want to look to see if anything strange is going on with this question: superuser.com/questions/1249930/… a brand new user asks a question then is answered and accepts that answer 23 minutes later from a brand new user which states exactly what he basically didn't believe. (in other words he said it was his isp, and he then accepted an answer, that said it was his ISP)
honestly op is msft I don't know if they'd do something like that but then again everyone can be an idiot, so...
@Bob linus is by no means master of linux haha
iirc he brushed away debian because "too hard to install"
WOAH!
I should invite him to install arch or void.
loving the new look @Avery
Thaaanks, it's based on a real life selfie and was drawn by this lady.
10:14
huh... tumblr is blocked by our firewall...
i'll take a look at home but i like it :)
@Avery op says they are msft.
I mean I check AD but I can't see anyone lying about that
What is with the stock market being going up after Florida and Texas is with hit with two of the biggest hurricanes in like in awhile?
yeah my portfolio had been under S&P for days now
So everyone hates Florida and Texas?
I mean the international fund is what really gets me, it the highest its been all year.
So basically the world hates Florida
10:29
@Avery AD?
active directory
@Ramhound yes
What Active Directory are you going to check?
if they didn't revoke it yet I can actually see the people in microsoft through my student partner account's address book I think
o_O oooh
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound oh my. That sounds very familiar :P
@Avery Funny thing, that... I find debian the easiest to bootstrap :P
@Ramhound Oh, and welcome back! Hope you weren't hit too badly?
@djsmiley2k so, now that have a working system again...
MBR2GPT was excellent. Worked just fine.
Problem 1: I did it on a live system, so instead of reusing the boot partition it shrunk the OS partition and added a new ESP
Problem 2: I tried to restore the old structure (entire drive, really) via Acronis but ... Acronis tried to do it on boot, but it only changed the BIOS bootloader and the next boot went the new UEFI path and failed to run the restore.
Problem 3: I tried to restore again but since I was currently booted via UEFI, Acronis wanted to convert the restored system to GPT. Bad Acronis!
Problem 4: Tried the same thing from a boot disk, but accidentally booted via UEFI. Guess what?
So... eventually got an Acronis boot disk going via BIOS boot, restored the old system, ran MBR2GPT via a boot disk (the same one, actually) and here we are. Proper GPT/UEFI system, no wonky partitions.
10:39
I have been here the last 5 days....
@Bob I had the exact opposite problem with Aconris
I could not for the life of me get it to convert to GPT for me
I had to wait until my hdd crashed which of course meant my image was out of date, go figure
But I was using one of the older versions (was current at the time) whch was using the Linux environment not the winPE
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound oh, must've missed you
@Ramhound It seems to do it automatically for boot drives to match the current boot environment :\
@Ramhound pretty much, although if you think about it the USA is the richest country in the world and in theory shouldn't need to rely on a charitable fund especially when there are tiny Caribbean islands that have effectively been annihilated
You need to aim better
To be fair....I live in Florida and outside of the insurance I pay...wouldn't expect donations outside of my own community.
I don't live on an Island because of the risks.
Just saying :$
It doesn't meant I won't donate to help those in need.
I really hope I can pick up a SNES Classic.
11:03
the fonts look a tiny bit horizontally squashed...
(phone @Bob and I were talking about earlier)
Is it Friday yet?
Bob
Bob
11:18
@JourneymanGeek lol. it's vaguely like this one
I have one sitting next to me. Think it cost $45
(originally $90?)
@Bob a fair bit smaller tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek is that supposed to be good? :P
oh the one I have is this one pdadb.net/…
its a little smaller than 2.5 inches
Bob
Bob
a bit better than the original
ah I have no clue what I did but notifications work \o/
11:50
@Ramhound it's nearly my friday?
12:04

ok that was weird
but why is it given in metric then changes to imperial, then back again XD
Sounds... british
lol
firstly.... ALL ENERGY IS REUSED.
> The Q.rad is a system with high inertia and produces a high quality “soft” heat, as opposed to electrical convectors. The heat produced is homogeneous and stable, distributed evenly throughout the room, ensuring maximum comfort and a gentle feeling comparable to that of central heating.
u wat
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k High inertia means it changes slowly. Which is ... the opposite of what I'd expect of CPUs
Yeah, I thought aluminium cooled relatively quickly...
12:21
there is a passive cooling system that works by passing electrical charge through the heatsink
erm
Do you mean peltier coolers?
thats it!
that's actually due to the ... peltier effect? like a thermocouple in reverse
12:38
erm, peltiers aren't passive...
most definately active cooling.
no moving parts though and are exactly what i was thinking of
user226528
Oh, wow! Photos apps in Windows 10 has made a great improvement!
user226528
Previously, it made albums for me from time to time and chimed, "Oh, look! I made an album for you!" I had to delete it manually. Now the album that it creates for me (:rolls eyes:) is kept where I can conveniently ignore.
user226528
Now I can open the app once a year (or even less often if I fancy) and give Microsoft a finger!
o_O
@Burgi hmmmm mechnical?
12:51
you could passively cool a core i7
At what point do they thermal throttle?
As in a solid lump of aluminium a radiator that's 'safe' for contact (for kids) is 43C
Well the idea is you go for massive thermal mass and surface area.
> maximum surface temperature of 43 deg C
Now, I'm not a physicist, but the surface area of 3 cpu's spread over the entire surface area of those black metal boxes, makes me think they're going to be a lot cooler than 43C.
That is the idea...
a CPU at 100C, x3, isn't goin to warm up the whole thing that much.... and also won't most of the heat concentrate around the cpu?
13:07
@djsmiley2k Some people consider "passive" as in no fans. Some people consider passive as in no noise.
@djsmiley2k 100'c
@djsmiley2k That entirely depends at what point the metal boxes reach thermal equilibrium
A good cooler is designed to distribute heat quickly and evenly over the entire surface so the CPU won't reach 100'c until the entire cooler is also 100'c all over
@CircusCat some people are wrong :D
@CircusCat a 'perfect' cooler?
I doubt they exist ;/
The entire thing weights 27Kg, so there's a fair bit of metal in there
@djsmiley2k Yeah but it really depends on thermal equilibrium
The thing says 500w. That's a lot to convect passively.
And heat transfer rate goes up (exponentially?) with thermal gradient, so...
I don't think it's exponetial, otherwise glassblowing etc wouldn't work
the heat would just shoot down the pipe/stem thing.
13:17
May just be linear proportionally then. Either way, central heating systems often heat the water up to 60'c or even 80'c.
Because 43'c water would take forever to heat up a room. Then again people don't tend to leave those running 24/7 like a "HPC server" would
hmmmm yus
It's possible they have a perfectly calibrated design with the exact optimal thermal conductivity to maintain a comfortable skin temperature while the CPU churns away at 80'c+ (They can also adjust the thermal throttling temperature in BIOS/firmware, if they're smart)
my central heating is 65C iirc
If it were me designing it, that's what I'd do.
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k that's... not how heat works
13:21
@Bob Ahem
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat hm?
Looks like the hot bits are hot to me
Bob
Bob
@CircusCat I meant it's not enough to look at just the temp of the CPU
So it won't get hotter at the cpu, before the outside warms up??
13:22
Max temp 63.3'c while the CPU/GPU run at close to 100, and most of it's concentrated around the CPU
Bob
Bob
though I completely forgot the context was those weird room heating things, sooo... :\
@Bob haha :) ok I let you off
@Bob Me too! At first :-D
I mean, I'm not stating facts, I'm asking :/
@djsmiley2k But you're right. In real life scenarios, i.e. non-ideal "perfect" heat dissipators, the whole device won't warm up to the CPU temperature and the heat will mostly concentrate around the CPU, for a while.
But you can also see the vents on that image are pretty hot despite being far from the CPU, that's a good heatpipe doing its job
13:25
Is that the bottom of a laptop?
Yes
The bottom of my laptop to be precise
Bob
Bob
hm
I probably shouldn't watch kitchen nightmares while eating
afternoon
13:50

Anyone know what triggers the memory warnings on Windows 10? I always thought they were load related, but I just found out they aren't.
Kinda weird
Bob
Bob
When used as a verb, eighty-six, eighty-sixed, 86, 86ed, or 86'd is American English slang for getting rid of something, ejecting someone, or refusing service. == Meaning == According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, "86" is a slang term that is used in the American popular culture as a transitive verb to mean throw out or get rid of, particularly in the food service industry as a term to describe an item no longer available on the menu, or to refuse service to a customer. The Merriam Webster dictionary suggests the term may be associated with the word "nix" ("no" or a more general prohibition...
o.O
@WilliamMariager Look at your commit. You're probably hitting the commit limit.
See the "Committed" section?
Bob
Bob
Hm. Odd.
Indeed.
I wonder if it's any indication of a fault.
Bob
Bob
I can't pull my usual "don't turn off the page file" :P
13:53
Or just Windows doing something weird.
Bob
Bob
Typically not the case.
The other possibility is driver-locked memory.
Hmm, I'll dig a bit if it happens again.
bye
Thanks for the help :)
Bob
Bob
13:57
@WilliamMariager Other weirdness I've seen is a lot of RAM taken up by PTEs (Page Table Entries), usually when something reserves a loooot of memory (but never commits much)
RAMMap will show PTE usage
From there, Process Explorer will show the reserved amount, under Private Bytes IIRC?
Hmm, could it happen if something had a very high memory usage and then got reduced again without a restart?
It might still have the memory reserved I guess.
Bob
Bob
@WilliamMariager I'd also keep an eye on Commit - I think I've encountered cases where the low memory warning was shortly followed by the commit-consuming process crashing.
That's usually what we call a memory leak :P
@WilliamMariager If you're talking without a process restart, then sure. Memory leak, or just poor cleanup. But once you close the process the OS should, absent an OS or driver bug, reclaim all the memory it used.
Bob
Bob
OS bugs in that area are extremely rare.
I'd look at dodgy processes first.
The reason I was asking is because I'm working with InDesign and it's a hog. Auto generating documents into the hundreds and then closing them.
Oh wait. I think I had procmon running ...
It must've filled up and crashed
Just as you said, it shows the warning but before I check the memory has been freed again.
Bob
Bob
14:05
@WilliamMariager That would do it :P
@Bob USD 125 for 2.45-inch screen with 240 x 432 and no mention of microSD slot? Nah. Can get better less worse stuff for that price here.
By the way @Bob, that Australian phone you mentioned the other day, IIRC it was carrier locked, wasn't it?
I have no idea what this is about, but there's no way I'm not starring this:
Bob
Bob
@WilliamMariager You can set backing files under the File menu in procmon.

@ThatBrazilianPony Wait, which one?
Vodafone ones aren't locked at all.
Ah, I'll keep that in mind. I've only ever used it shortly where I often clear it.
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianPony Huh. I see a slot in the photo :P
Was using it to debug how InDesign did path lookups when trying to swap images with scripts. For some reason it would fail. Turns out the path, which can only ever be a local system file, has to be url encoded. :P

Yeah. They don't mention it on the specs page, just on that image.

Could be poor command-line parsing.
Which makes me more surprised that URL-encoding even works.
Could be poor command-line parsing.
Spaces were accepted, but # had to be encoded.
@Bob The only one you posted a link here, can't find it in the history +_+
Bob
Bob
@WilliamMariager odd.
@ThatBrazilianPony ...I think I linked a couple :S
Yeah. Working with InDesign has been a challenge. Not to mention everything is happening through a COM interface and documentation is poor to non-existing.
@WilliamMariager # is for comments!
lul
14:10
Hehe
Well, I have to kinda blame my client too. Who uses # in file names?
@Bob One which was listed for about 79 AUD IIRC and you said you could get it cheaper in a store.

Just got an email offering us to sign up for an extra (paid) one-time job overseeing a national exam. As it is a national exam, applying to this job has a lot of red tape. The web page where I sign up has twenty paragraphs of text.
20 paragraphs of text that convey nothing and the gist of it is "read the attached rules". Which are not attached.
I call the phone number on the bottom of the site and they say "oh it's not ready yet". WHY SEND THE DAMNED EMAIL THEN!
Just another day at Bizarro U
Oh, the "apply here" link opens a form that is live. I wonder what happens if I fill it.
you become a winner!
Guys is it possible to create this kind of animated presentation in powerpoint as shown in this conference
you could of linked closer to the animation
but I would of thought so yes
maybe
oh mah gosh
i just thouught about quantum entanglement and what you can do with redudant networks
mutlipath which knows if the other route has 'already recieved the packet'
14:47
I sent him an email to grant me license for the reuse of his contents. He didn't reply till yet. I find it really cool to show presentations like this so I'm wondering if i can use these effects in powerpoint. It almost looks like a playing video until you look closer
Either the JSConf organizers might have made it animated using some animation tools or it is actually a slide show effect i don't know
oh it's only a pdf download, hmmm
@djsmiley2k I saw it. They are static images. It is just a sequence of slides with no moving object like in the video.
was going to suggest you can at least see how it's done
Maybe they are not interested in giving the source so they uploaded as pdf
@defalt Sounds an interesting presentation.
14:59
@ThatBrazilianPony The topic or the effects?
