Does/can windows 10 installation create a log?

i'm trying to install windows 10 on an old laptop and it just takes an infinite amount of time after the restart. Showing the circular thing and the blue squares. No error message.

you have to choose "startup settings" to get to safe mode but that option is missing.

I tried booting off usb though to get to winre.

so maybe that's why that option isn't there.

The shutdown 3 times worked when I tried win10 off a usb stick with win 10 64bit.. I just tried a usb stick with win10 32bit 'cos I wanted to see if it halted at the same place, and it did.. though this one won't go to winre after 3 shutdowns

just found u can open a cmd prompt during a windows 10 installation

unfortunately no thought has gone into the windows 10 installation program.. it doesn't show a progress bar

(as far as i can tell based on this install).

after it says getting ready and restarts the computer, it shows the circle and just takes a long time.

@Bob it says "windows cannot complete installation in safe mode" maybe an issue with the hard drive controller motherboard side, since it is a new hard drive I just tried. I got a cmd prompt open during the windows installation and I saw the installation was so slow that it had only installed about 200MB in 15min of showing the loading screen, that was the pace of the installation.

@Bob it's a vostro 1700. Prior to that new hard drive in the vostro 1700, I tried a hard drive with windows 7 on it that was in a vostro 1710 and it worked initially then suddenly didn't even get as far as starting windows I then put the hard drive that was from the 1710, back into the vostro 1710 and it worked. Also in the past it had a n older hard drive in there with Windows 10 installed though windows 10 ran slowly.

so that laptop seems like it might be temperamental with hard drives.
