"In addition to the standard PC disk partition scheme that uses a master boot record (MBR), UEFI also works with a new partitioning scheme called GUID Partition Table (GPT)"
so both
Bob
Bob
> The boot manager must also support booting from a short-form device path that starts with the first element being a hard drive media device path (see Table 86). The boot manager must use the GUID or signature and partition number in the hard drive device path to match it to a device in the system. If the drive supports the GPT partitioning scheme the GUID in the hard drive media device path is compared with the UniquePartitionGuid field of the GUID Partition Entry (see Table 18). If the drive supports the PC-AT MBR scheme the signature in the hard drive media device path is compared with
That's from UEFI 2.7 § 3.1.2 Load Option Processing
> If an MBR partition has an OSType field of 0xEF (i.e., UEFI System Partition), then the firmware must add the UEFI System Partition GUID to the handle for the MBR partition using InstallProtocolInterface().
@Burgi gotg?
Bob
Bob
5.2.1 Legacy Master Boot Record (MBR)
@djsmiley2k guardians of the galaxy
Bob
Bob
> A legacy MBR may be located at LBA 0 (i.e., the first logical block) of the disk if it is not using the GPT disk layout (i.e., if it is using the MBR disk layout).
@jiggunjer It looks like MBR support is required
11:04
So it has to have a table.
Bob
Bob
10.3.6.1 Hard Drive
> EFI supports MBR and GPT partitioning formats.
> The Hard Drive Media Device Path is used to represent a partition on a hard drive. Each partition has at least Hard Drive Device Path node, each describing an entry in a partition table.
@Burgi nope, cannot find.
it actually wouldn't surprise me now if some uefi systems could boot from a superfloppy fat32, but it just isn't required in the standard.
Bob
Bob
> Partitions are addressed in EFI starting at LBA zero. A partition number of zero can be used to represent the raw hard drive or a raw extended partition.
Hmmmm.
@jiggunjer Feels like a superfloppy could legally be "a partition number of zero"
by definition a partition is defined in a partition table.
else it is a single volume drive
Bob
Bob
11:09
@jiggunjer Yes, but "a partition number of zero" can be the "raw hard drive", i.e. the entire drive
I think that's what Windows does, actually
yea, it does
@jiggunjer In Windows \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\Harddisk0\Partition0 refers to the entire drive;\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\Harddisk0\Partition1 starts the actual partitions
best i could do:
Bob
Bob
i.e. Partition0 is equivalent to Linux sda while Partition1 is like sda1
Bob
Bob
aha! @jiggunjer 13.3.2 Partition Discovery, yup:
> This specification requires the firmware to be able to parse the legacy master boot record(MBR) (see Section 5.2.1), GUID Partition Table (GPT)(see Section 5.3.1), and El Torito (see Section 13.3.2.1) logical device volumes.
does a superfloppy count as el torito
I thought that was for iso 19960 or whatever optical media filesystem
Bob
Bob
11:23
@jiggunjer no, I was just pointing out that MBR support is required :P
I swear I've had this conversation before with someone else
@jiggunjer anyway, for removable media, it does not say any partition scheme is required
> 13.3.4.1 Removable Media
> Removable media may contain a standard FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32 file system.
> 13.3.4.2 Diskette
> EFI bootable diskettes follow the standard formatting conventions used on personal computers. The diskette contains only a single partition that complies to the EFI file system type.
> Diskettes include the legacy 3.5-inch diskette drives as well as the newer larger capacity removable media drives such as an Iomega* Zip*, Fujitsu MO, or MKE LS-120/SuperDisk*.
> 13.3.4.3 Hard Drive
> Hard drives may contain multiple partitions as defined in Section 13.3.2 on partition discovery. Any partition on the hard drive may contain a file system that the EFI firmware recognizes.
It only mentions partitions for hard drives
hm...
> 13.3.1.3 Directory Structure
> For removable media devices there must be only one UEFI-compliant system partition, and that partition must contain an UEFI-defined directory in the root directory.
idk then
@JourneymanGeek at the bakery?
Bob
Bob
> A System Partition is a partition in the conventional sense of a partition on a legacy system. For a hard disk, a partition is a contiguous grouping of sectors on the disk where the starting sector and size are defined by the Master Boot Record (MBR), which resides on LBA 0 (i.e., the first sector of the hard disk) (see Section 5.2), or the GUID Partition Table (GPT), which resides on logical block 1 (the second sector of the hard disk) (see Section 5.3.1). For a diskette (floppy) drive, a partition is defined to be the entire media.
Hmph.
@jiggunjer So. Is your flash drive a "hard disk" or a "diskette drive"? :D
@djsmiley2k no. Moved further in.
Bob
Bob
I suspect in practice most implementations will just try all of 'em.
But yea having a (GPT|MBR) partition table is safer than not having one these days.
it's so stupid the definition of a partition changes depending on the physical shape of your storage.
storage and partitions should be purely abstract concepts.
what if you have a virtual drive consisting of flash, magnetic disks and floppies. Define partition plz UEFI.
my drive identifies as an attack helicopter
wtf is this @Burgi -- NO RESULTS
££££
Hmmm cozy club isn't one £
12:13
I have seven active tabs on this browser. Six of them taking around 12 MB of RAM each.
And then there's facebook, this behemoth, this... monstrosity, taking 2.5GB
Facebook is using nearly half of all my RAM!
yeah
it's bonkers, and I don't understand why it's 1. allowed to, 2. need sto
lets say I'm scrolling down my feed and there's a video
ok you might of cached it, but after I 've watched it, get rid
"Oh bt what if they want to scroll back to the top". I bet less than 0.000001% do that
i cick the F icon at hte top and reload the page.
I think the browsers should take control and just allow limits to be set on sites
Bob
Bob
12:49
@djsmiley2k and... what happens if it hits the limit?
user226528
13:14
@Burgi What about it?
@Bob BOOM!
13:31
@FleetCommand as a former wikipedia editor i thought you might like the analysis
14:26
Chrome def needs that.. ulimit settings.
I'd vouch for that.
TOTALLY
oh also hi guys, morning.
14:39
@Bob it feels like a lot of the memory usage is just unneeded caching
because 'gotta go fast'
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k more likely a leak. again, what would you expect to happen?
should the page just crash?
there's not really any nice way to deal wth OOM
btw, forcibly crashing pages is extremely poor ux
(see also: earlier ipad models would kill any app that took >50% CPU for >60s... good luck doing anything mildly heavy)
yah I know it's a painful problem
but it feels like if we don't crash the page, what devs are gonna care about their pages eating up gbs upon gbs of ram?
I wish I knew how to anaylise exactly why loading a page would use X memory
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k heap profiler in devtools
k, lookin at that now.
Bob
Bob
ah, they moved it under its own "Memory" tab
14:44
Ok I have no clue what I'm looking at :D
ah ok
I mean, this page, under summary, shows around 13Mb
Task Manager, in chrome (i.e. chromes native task manager) shows 109,732K.... 109Mb?
Bob
Bob
I'd say you could send me the snapshot, but there's probably private data in there
@Bob give me a secure way to give it to you?
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k facebook is 13 MB?
Bob
Bob
ah
nah, this page is much lighter
14:49
yup
but says 119Mb~
Bob
Bob
typical chrome :P
probably some amount taken up by DOM, renderer, etc
but this is my point
As a user, i seem to have no control, nor the ability to know what is going on
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k use firefox. about:memory :D
in all seriousness, overhead aside, a heap snapshot should show you where most of the facebook mem usage is going
[This will crash chrome](chrome://crash/ "don't click me!")
o_O
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k take a snapshot of facebook when it gets big
14:53
have to wait til I'm home
but the point statds
Bob
Bob
eh, typical chrome overhead
@djsmiley2k reopen chat and see how big it is
also, extensions
i refreshed it...
do i need to relaunch the entire chrome?
Bob
Bob
idk
or try one without extensions
just in case

Q: How to open Google Chrome with extensions disabled / turned off?

t_b_bGoogle Chrome is crashing when I try to open it. I'm assuming that it's probably a bad extension that's causing the problem. How can I start up Chrome with all extensions disabled / turned off?

15:18
will play when at home.
For some promotional shots, I just tried to get Chrome to stop auto-completing anything
That seems like an impossible task
Even in Incognito, with Auto-Fill and Auto-Complete disabled in your profile, it will suggest completions
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg new profile!
@Bob Don't get me started... :P
don't click in boxes
@djsmiley2k That's tough when you want to record a sign-up process
15:30
I'm presuming you tried: Under "Passwords and forms," uncheck "Enable Autofill to fill out web forms in a single click.
@djsmiley2k Yes
:/
Sorry, can't help more. busy ;D
I spotted a msitake in the firewall rules at work \o/
it may explain why nothing was working the way it should of....
(well, not nothing but some things)
I already got through it anyway. We decided to fake it in Photoshop
yeah using a new profile would work
15:51
> Sony has added the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs to its Open Device project, allowing you to build and flash your own versions of Android™ N onto those devices.
Interesting
@Avery However, it introduced new issues that were causing too much friction at the time
As in, the new profiles are English, as my OS is in English. But I needed German. Which is annoying to adjust and even impossible in a Guest profile
wtf....
i was looking at prices for parking at liverpool airport when i go pick up my GF on monday. its about £7 for an hour, but they say "pre-book for up to 70% off!"
so i went and looked at that.... its £70!!!!!!
why woul anyone pre-book if its 10x more expensive?
16:27
@Burgi Maybe that is per day
maybe
i've found a free car park 5 mins walk from the terminal
17:18
@Bob even with these options? i.imgur.com/AC3LBMW.png
ignoring what i checked/unchecked in that image.. the options of
"add fixes for old bioses"
and possibly also "use rufus mbr"
Anyhow I tried installing windows 10 from MCT.. to USB.. I started the installation, came back home and found the laptop had shut down or gone into sleep mode
and when I try turning it on it just takes ages to load windows 10 and never loads
It just shows the 4 blue squares that make up the windows 10 loading screen and the white dots that circle below it
18:02
£7 an hour is what i'e seen some 'normal' car parks charge :;
@Burgi prebook, have your car stored 'safely' in a field for a week or two while you're away
18:49
is there a way to log which processes send COM/DCOM requests that result in svchost.exe -k DcomLaunch launching a child process on their behalf?

I keep getting IE randomly opened with an attempt to load an ad website ever since I played agar.io and my screen went black after accidently clicking on their "buy coins ad" that keeps popping up over the play again button. The IE is started by this svchost process which only has DCOM, plug and play, and power.

nope virus scans didnt work I tried 6 different engines
I tried using google, it didnt work :(
I tried disabling dcom server launcher to make the problem go away ;) and windows wouldnt boot up haha.
Hey Tom are you from europe? :)
@djsmiley2k their website suggested otherwise but it appears so
19:48
wtf is wrong with me?
i went to the shop for some bits, queued up, got distracted and walked out without paying
i ran back in immediately obviously
@Burgi Oh dear :/
super embarrassing and i probably can't go in there again for a month or so
i was thinking about getting my car washed this weekend and next thing i know i'm stood outside holding my bag of shopping looking at the car in a confused way
the woman at the counter was fine with it and was laughing at me
apparantly i mumbled something about the car wash and walked out
@Burgi Don't normal people have their shopping in a basket and then put it into a bag after they have paid?
@DavidPostill she'd filled my bag for life and handed it back to me full to give herself some room
@Burgi hahahaha.
19:55
i think we were both a little distracted
@Burgi TWTASTTB :)
@DavidPostill um...? That's What....?
@Burgi ... the actress said to the bishop
of course :)
I think I might finally have a job
19:58
wooohooo
being what?
I'm arguing about the contract which has some stupid clause about "we require full flexibility as hours may be anywhere within operational hours for the ..." and they originally said "Fixed shift, 0800-1700 Monday to Friday"
Operational hours being 8am through 10pm
is it in liverpool?
@Burgi Call centre monkey in L'Pool
@DavidPostill :(
at least its a start
tech support?
Exactly. Not tech support. With my experience I can be a team leader/coach/trainer in 6 months ... or working somewhere else
And it's something on my CV
It's always easier to get a job when you have a job.
20:06
agreed
I will take it anyway but I hope they will agree to fix the contract ...
is there public transport after 10pm, just in case?
@Burgi Yes. Would get home very late though :/
:(
I will see what they say tomorrow in response to my email.
20:21
@LPChip - "but if they aren't the user will get an error claiming they miss a certain file, for example: vbvm50.dll (Visual Basic 5.0 runtime)" this would only be true if vbvm50.dll wasn't in the same directory as the executable itself.
Windows has a hierarchy of locations of where it will search for a file before it says "I can't find it" one of the last locations is the system32 directory.
@DavidPostill - I currently work a flex schedule. However, we still rotate people in order to "be on call" in case something happens. We don't have to do that but due to the nature of the job, not doing it isn't really an option, although we could technically decline to do so.
Sounds like my situation is different though :-)
@Ramhound Yeah, call centers don't need agents to be on call in that sense ...
There is a big gap between "fixed hours" and "full flexibility"

2 hours later…
22:53
whats that mexican song?
sort of goes arrriba yabba mamba
google is failing me :(
also te new google assistant it terrible
might not be mexican but certainly latin america
i'll have to wait for my GF and hum it at her
and she'll say "omg, you mean <insert song name and artist here>. what is wrong with you for not knowing that?"
23:18
"La Bamba" (pronounced [la ˈβamba]) is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a top 40 hit in the U.S. charts and one of early rock and roll's best-known songs. Valens' version of "La Bamba" is ranked number 354 on Rolling Stone magazine′s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It is the only song on the list sung in a language other than English. "La Bamba" has been covered by numerous artists, most notably by Los Lobos, whose version was the title track of the 1987 film La Bamba and reached No. 1 in the U.S. and UK...
@JourneymanGeek thats it
i realise this probably makes me extremely racist
Naw
I have the exact same issue when trying to remember say, the title of one of indica's songs
@Burgi Are you sure you are not mixing up Speedy Gonzales (arriba) and the Flintstones (yabba dabba doo)?
lol
@DavidPostill its just how it sounds to me
i remember seeing part of a stadium tour video and there was this tiny guy with a massive guitar and the crowd screamed constantly
i must have been about 6 or 7 and our neighbour had satellite tv so he could watch irish horse racing shrug
any way i remember eating crisps and having lemonade and just watching this one song
Bob
Bob
morn
23:25
lol
Hi!
I remember "la babamba" and "ariba la lasa"
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Valokeilojen vampyyri? I have no idea where to even start pronouncing that
And for @Burgi translated lyrics :) lyricstranslate.com/en/la-bamba-bamba.html-1
@DavidPostill this will probably ruin it for me...
23:27
@Bob AKA the minibus song ;p
@Bob or ihmisen lento...
or that other one I cannot begin to remember
maybe i was younger than 6
and their finnish stuff is a lot better than their english self-covers
iirc we moved in 89
> I'm not a sailor,
I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain.
I'm a captain, I'm a captain.
I like how the other translation is totally different
23:29
> blah-blah-blah la bamba Blah-blah-blah-blah la bamba AY AY AY AY AY AY AYYYYY.....AY AY AY AY AY AY AYYYYY
JESUS F. CHRIST! WTF! WHO GIVES A RAT'S PATOOT!
i mean who had sattelite tv in the 80s?
our neighbour was a nice irish guy but he lived in a semi-detached house in a "meh" suburb of a poor (at the time) northern city
i should ask my dad wtf was going on there
its only now that i'm thinking about it that it seems weird
maybe he spent all his money on satellite tv and horses hence the crap house?
Hmm. Someone has misplaced their tin foil?
