@JourneymanGeek Okay, fixed a bit. The rest looks good, or it's something the mods want to take a shot at (deleting and closing)
lol
what is that I don't even
Well, it is a real question, I'd say
There is not enough info to derive an answer ;p
Vodafone. Worst support call menu structure ever. I requested to talk to a person and then was sent into the selection menus.
15:12
@DanielBeck What kind of person do you want to talk to?
@JourneymanGeek It'd be off topic anyway – this way, I don't even have to think about it :)
@OliverSalzburg The helpful kind. Please?
@OliverSalzburg A real person, preferably in the same, or neighbour country with the same language
@DanielBeck You have selected "Sales". Press 0 to continue

Q: What is this Perl script used for?

AlBouaziziIn our system, someone is trying to execute a perl script I don't understand. What does this script do? I'm attaching part of the script below. SUA_Discovery_version="1.6.1" DoLog "phase=discovery" DoLog "SUA_Discovery_version=$SUA_Discovery_version" SUA_Fail()

Hm.
If someone is trying to execute a script, its too late
Arn't you glad you had an incident... oh wait, you don't?
@JourneymanGeek Really don't understand why he doesn't post the full script.
@slhck: I'm more worried that 'someone' is trying to execute a perl script
@JourneymanGeek Yeah
15:23
If you know who it is, take him aside, dark room, a little gentle persuation ... with bright lights... and... solved! You know what that script does!
haha
Evening @Sathya
evening @slhck
for anyone interested:

With the recent “REP-OCALYPSE” that happened over the weekend, we thought it was a great time to do another podcast – so come join Joel, Jarrod, and Josh as they talk about some of the recent changes to the site and the motivations behind them.

JOEL: This is not necessarily a podcast, but it might turn into something useable, perhaps in the form of a podcast, maybe. The goal is to talk about all of the questions that are getting closed, aka REP-OCALYPSE NOW.

Part One: there has been closing and deletion of very popular old questions going on lately. Are we happy with how this is going? What are the other options? …

It's actually difficult to get the damn invoices. I don't believe it.
15:37
Hm?
I didn't notice when Vodafone stopped sending paper invoices in April 11
Now I registered on their website to get them as PDF
But it only goes back to 10/2011.
Aaaand calling them once again.
huh, only half a year?

Q: How can a site run without Internet?

Chethan S.I came across this site http://www.desimartini.com/allaboutrajni.htm which requires me to disconnect from Internet to see the action! I am surprised as the site has quite an amount of content and seriously doubt if it can cache everything to my browser in few seconds. Can someone help me in under...

I want to upvote this just for that picture
@slhck 5
15:39
Even worse.
Okay, bbl – gotta study for my Multimedia Retrieval exam. @DanielBeck, you wanna do the test for me? I can make those Vodafone calls for you :P
@slhck Just finished them, sorry. Have fun!
:(
Okay, screw that, I found a Super Mario meets Portal game.
@JourneymanGeek lol.
@JourneymanGeek what's that?
@slhck I hate you.

@JourneymanGeek ah
@slhck Buggy. Half a second freeze every time I jump :(
@DanielBeck Works for me … unfortunately!
Hello wonderful people
Question for you, do you guys cover hardware questions?
Oh,nevermind :P
But we have this question over at GamingSE:
@Wipqozn depends..
-1
Q: What is everyone's opinion on using magnetic tip screwdrivers on computer?

doctor_roxoJust ordered a new gpu and psu and was wondering if i can use my stanley screwdriver(only the inside where the bits are inserted is magnetic) or if i should just go buy a regular non-magnetic screwdriver?

Obviously not fit for SE in it's current form
but if it was adjusted to ask if there were any riskw ith using magnetic tip screwdrivers on a computer, would it fit here?
15:57
Hm, kinda meh for us as well.
I think we have a dupe already?
One that BorisYo asked
47
Q: Can Screwdrivers With Magnetic Tips Cause Damage To Electronics?

Boris_yoWhile it is convenient to pick screws with magnetized tips i wonder if the magnetism can cause any damage to electronics?

@JourneymanGeek oh dear lord, didn't realize there was a song on loop on that :|
@Wipqozn ^----------- point them to that ;)
@slhck Excellent, thanks.
I didn't go that far
15:59
Typical bikeshed question :P
lol
wow, nearly all of boris' rep is from that question
lol
@Sathya: Its Rajini. What did you expect? ;p
If the earth's magnetic field, increases in strength and switches polarity multiple times, will all the HDD on earth be erased?
@JourneymanGeek you like him ??
it wouldn't matter
@HackToHell: not to the extent some people do ;p
but, tamil (All Indian) movies always have music, singing and fighting. -- ftfy, Sathya
16:02
ya, take away music and fights and the movie time shrinks 75%
Reminds me of that Heineken commercial
What would happen if all the magnetic drives on earth were erased ? ?? really curious
@HackToHell: if the magnetic field flipped
we'd all die ;p
also, hard drives are actually well shielded
you'd need a massively powerful field to get through that
assuming i get an insanely powerful field to do that and i erase ALL data, we get sent back to stone age ??
16:06
we'll all die ;p
:) certainly
Not stone, rather Flintstone-age in this case. :)
lol
naw, we'd probably go back to vacuum tubes initially
they're EM resistant
Heh.

Or just woofers. only M field though. :P
16:17
ooh
arstechnica.com/business/guides/2012/03/… this is interesting. I need to link it to @sidran32 when he's on ;p
Hi, is it appropriate to ask a question for shopping advice? I'm looking for a usb-bluetooth adapter.
lol
@kotekzot: deal extreme has a tiny 3 dollar one...
@kotekzot It's explicitly off topic (see FAQ).
well, asking here is ok
(on chat, that is) :P
16:19
I see, thanks. Don't suppose there's a SE site where it is appropriate?
All right, thanks.
@slhck I can see where he's coming from though.
@kotekzot Most shopping sites generally have a lot of reviews already, I suppose

Considered getting a Mac Mini with OSX Server on to play around with - they do education discounts but £500 for the most entry-level mac? I'd think I'd rather bugger the legalities and make one of my laptops into a hackintosh.
@tombull89: thing is, research isn't hard
@tombull89 Yeah, totally understandable. But in an office :/
lifehacker does a guide on exactly what hardware works
Heck that'd be weird, to have a site for shopping suggestions. Should be named Flame-zone.
All day long discussion on nvidia-vs-ati, WD-vs-Seagate, intel-vs-amd.
16:21
haha
in The Comms Room, 1 hour ago, by tombull89
@LucasKauffman I want to do it legit, I really do, but it's not easy.
ATI is AMD ;p
in The Comms Room, 1 hour ago, by tombull89
It's just to tinker about with on the weekend when I've got the time, I can't justify dropping £500 on a basic machine.
Don't be silly, everybody knows nVidia, Intel and Seagate rule the schools.
so...yeah.
16:22
Well, different context. :P
@tombull89: if its for testing though... the company that raspberry pi uses for hosting has OS X dedicated servers, and its not very costy
@kotekzot Now now, Don't start it here.
I was joking.
Well, see ya.
@JourneymanGeek Really? The must have got some special discount for that.
apparently they use mac minis for everything
16:24
Anyone got a Raspberry here yet?
700 orders per second! Now that's a number to crunch.
no, waiting on my next break, since i need to put in an order for caps from RS ;p
@Bibhas: They underestimated demand
and its a nice little toy computer ;p
@JourneymanGeek Well, yeah. Even I want one.
"Can i have it when you're done? I'd like to give it to my little girl to play with"
16:27
:D I wanna play with it myself. :P
lol, was quoting 13th warrior ;p
I'm wondering if i can run an IRC server on one
I think you can, pretty easily.
@JourneymanGeek You already have a ubuntu box running all the time right ?
Could use it as an ultra-low powered webserver.
ya, but its not used for much
I can replace everything on it with static pages, or a tuned LAMP stack for low memory use
16:29
Apache eats up a lot of memory
I'm somewhat interested in the idea of a self contained irc server tho
mysql is worse
@Bibhas Yeah, you'd have to run ngix or jetty on it.
how is nginx + nosql combo?
depends on what you run
right
16:31
i'm currently using dokuwiki, so i don't need sql
what does it use?
oh flat file
ya
easy to back up, dead simple
and my wiki is primarily for my own use anyway
16:47
@JourneymanGeek I saw it earlier. Pretty awesome. I was wondering when Windows was going to get on the live bootable removable media train. :P
XD
its one of the promised features
Coolies
So I'm using Windows 8 on my desktop. Working from home at the moment. :P So far, I haven't found myself sacrificing productivity. :)
I'll prolly look at it once i come back from military training
16:49
Military training? Thought you were done with that.
the learning curve isn't too bad
lol, I have a 12 day reservist thing... right smack in the middle of my school deadlines
Ah, wonderful
Which is wierd, its not at my 'home' unit, nor somewhere where we usually have training
I thought that your military requirement was done a while ago though :P
Heh
and i'm a particularly pointless vocation
there's 2 1/2 years full time
and between a week to 12 days a year
16:50
Ah, so you're done with the full time part.
nods
yes
i don't fit in my uniforms any more T T
How do you do in the military, considering your struggles? Was kinda curious about that.
Aww :P
badly ;p
I actually convinced everyone i was a complete and utter idiot
Wow :o
16:53
At least in the US there's exceptions for people who have mental issues and can't serve. Though we also don't have mandatory service requirements. :P
Unless they enact the draft, which is kind of a special case
I'm a storeman
Its like
obsolete and outsourced
unless they change my vocation, which would be messy too..
16:54
Ah
reinstalling Acronis since it's got issues with Win 8
why not just us the native backup?
oh.. i need to check if that exists ;p
and what new toys that has
Because Acronis is awesome :P
It's what I use
I can image a disk and install it onto completely different hardware
true
but thats rarely an issue for me ;p
Is Norton Ghost still alive?
I used to see people use it even before I got a computer.
Hello people of the internet!
17:10
Hi there, mortal. :P
Wow.
I managed to not get back VAT for half the business invoices I paid in 2011.
I'm pretty sure my accountant will think I'm an idiot.
And I'm pretty sure he's right.
17:26
Has this already been posted here? An overly dramatic report of a computer virus in 1988:
Starring a geeky Amish Van Helsing; virus hunter!
That preview warrants a click
Wow
That dude changed a bit ;D
@OliverSalzburg Wow, indeed!
Good to see he's still in the field. :P
@DanielBeck How did you do that?
17:31
@slhck Incompetence? Or what do you mean?
@DanielBeck Haha, okay, you said it. No, but isn't that kind of automatic anyway?
@iglvzx That part's the best.
@slhck I file VAT once per quarter. I pay the VAT I receive, and get reimbursed for the VAT I pay. Now, the former is easy. But since it's a small business in my name, and I just buy stuff I need for it, sometimes the invoices aren't available when I file.
Now I collect everything for the yearly correction, and that's when I noticed I didn't file almost half the invoices I paid, i.e. I get some money back.
@slhck I love that they used the old E.T. video game when describing the virus's behavior.
That game was bad...
@DanielBeck Oh, I see.
@iglvzx Haven't played that. Actually, I wasn't even born at that time ;)
@slhck I mean, try to identify the business purchase of a screwdriver set or a computer book in between your other Amazon purchases.
17:41
@slhck I played it when I was younger on my dad's Atari.
By the way, the E.T. game was so unsuccessful that Atari had a mass burial:
The Atari video game burial was a mass burial of unsold video game cartridges, consoles, and computers in a New Mexico landfill site, undertaken by American video game and home computer company Atari, Inc. in 1983. The goods disposed of through the burial are generally believed to have been several million copies of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, a game which had become one of the biggest commercial failures in video gaming; and the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man, which had been commercially successful but critically maligned. Since the burial was first reported in the press, there have been ...
@DanielBeck Actually, this year marks the first time I have to do taxes myself, so I don't even want to think about it.
@iglvzx What the … if they only knew, they'd make so much money off that now :P
@slhck Haha. Yeah
17:57
gah, been horribly sick the past 3-4 days. been throwing up half the time, some kind of weird flu
@studiohack Oh no. A virus! Hope you get better soon.
@iglvzx MSE won't clean me out :(
thanks @iglvzx. too bad midterms are this week
@studiohack lol
I hate Kickstarter. I'm now at $500 this year for cool stuff I don't need :-/
@studiohack Welcome. :)
18:00
@DanielBeck what is kickstarter? motorcycle part?
@studiohack It is a fundraising site
@iglvzx huh
@studiohack kickstarter.com
It's a great platform for people to reach out and get support for creative projects
At least the USD is weak.
18:25
Crap.
I really need to return that credit card. I'm not responsible enough to use one.
Could someone shed a little more light on this part from the FAQ:
> A maximum of 40 votes can be cast per user per day, however, to reach the maximum you must vote on at least 10 questions.
@JourneymanGeek Ah, RW-Everything. I remember that being used to overwrite the SMBIOS do to fake Lenovo activation of Windows 7...
Like, if the maximum is 40, how would you reach it without voting on 10 questions?
@OliverSalzburg Questions with a lot of answers
Oh, so the questions part is what's important, not the 10?
18:27
I think voting on answers counts toward that limit. It is not clear
@OliverSalzburg Ask Meta.SuperUser. Maybe someone can point you to the exact requirements and logic behind the limit
@iglvzx I just stumbled over it while looking into the rep cap. I was just a little confused
The rep cap is what's really confusing me though
Like a second ago, I had 3696 with 212 today, which would put me over the limit. But now I'm at 3707 with 222 today. How's that possible?
@OliverSalzburg I don't know. :(
@OliverSalzburg You can recalculating your reputation: superuser.com/reputation
I'm not sure when a recalc is done automatically, so that may be why you are seeing discrepancies.
@iglvzx The numbers match with my current score.
-- 2012-03-06 rep +222  = 3706
@slhck Yes, I mean that if you place the link it will look like $ to you but the link the browser will follow has a %24. So, replace $ by the %24 in the href...
@OliverSalzburg Accepts and bounty are immune to rep cap limits.
It's 200 for votes only.
18:38
@DanielBeck Ah, that explains it.
Thanks
That's the reason `/reputation` includes the following lines:
> rep cap was reached via rep from upvotes *only* on 9 days
> earned at least 200 reputation on 13 days
@slhck Indeed, the Sketchy theme could look bad towards random visitors from the internet. I think the new lay-out could boost the activity a little bit...
@TomWijsman New beta site theme? Looks a lot like the Apple.SE theme
@iglvzx: Yeah, the buttons.
Developer ask to the Designer: Do you have some nice UI elements for the new beta site theme?
Designer to the Valued Associates: How do you want the UI elements for the new beta theme to be like?
Valued Associates to the Designer: Take the best out of everything.
Designer to the Developer: Take the buttons from Apple.SE, take Y from Z, ...
And then we have a mess of good looking things that don't match. Like when you find some freeware software that runs on Windows XP but uses the Windows 7 title bar and buttons, KDE Oxygen icons, and the Ubuntu font for the UI.
(I hope such as application does not exist. I made it up)
18:55
@iglvzx: Well, there are websites that are like that I think. So wouldn't be surprised if there were applications like that... :D
@iglvzx They're called printer drivers.
@DanielBeck Ahaha. :)
My link is the most recent snapshot, however
:)
Yeah, I first found another site that linked to that. Going straight to it would've been better...
And man... The active questions on Meta.SO are all rant these days. :(
@TomWijsman By Meta.SO you mean the one true meta site where all users and all questions should congregate to be distracted by freehand circles and unicorn images?
ninefingers on March 06, 2012

Sometimes, every once in a while, a programmer feels like I do. VIM should be more efficient, more effective for editing text files yet I find myself reverting to the modern mouse-based approach more often than not.

A rather famous question on Stack Overflow asked for tips on how to be more productive with VIM – and he got one of the best answers I’ve ever seen. Not a list of tips but a working, detailed explanation from Stack Overflow user Jim Dennis. It’s so good, I am copying his answer’s raw source here, running it through the Markdown parser and copied it here. …

@DanielBeck First they complain reputation was removed, then they complain reputation stays, then they complain that reputation for historical posts should be done different, ... And that's just reputation. Also, a post complaining about the controversial posts on Meta.SO on top of that. And to get even more meta, a post about how the current s are bad and how discussion should be held instead. :D
@TomWijsman You should post a question complaining about the constant whining on MSO.
19:11
No, I don't want to participate in the rant. :(
Didn't look like it from here ;)
@DanielBeck Are you trying to kill him with downvotes?
Someone with blog editing privileges should fix that post at "</code> (backquote) command. Thus <code>"
Backticks were evaluated when they shouldn't have been.
@iglvzx Tom's the one who advocated posting every possible topic to MSO instead of MSU ;)
@Clippy "da</code> to cut or <code>ya" That post is seriously broken.
@DanielBeck: I want to but I don't know what the right revision is.
Clippy! Stop bothering me...
What happens when you reply to Clippy?
@Clippy Hello
19:18
Ah, These revisions are identical..
@DanielBeck: So what exactly do I fix? :D
y mark using the <code>`</code> (backquote) command. Thus <code>`z</code> will move directly to t
Do I replace the ` by a HTML character?
@TomWijsman Search for "<code>" in the blog post. All of those are wrongly created by pairs of backticks.
@TomWijsman Exactly.
&#x60;
&#96; is what I had, what is the difference?
@TomWijsman One is hex, the other decimal.
I'm talking non-sense there, indeed. It's just hex VS decimal. Fixed, does it look fine now? @DanielBeck
There are two instances of this issue in the post AFAICT, pretty much right next to each other.
19:22
Yeah, there were 5 occurences according to Notepad++; so that's indeed two pairs.
@TomWijsman No. There should be no backticks between the two characters of the da and ya commands.
"Then we can simply use d`a to cut or y`a to copy"
2134
A: What is your most productive shortcut with Vim?

Jim DennisYour problem with Vim is that you don't grok vi. You mention cutting with yy and complain that you almost never want to cut whole lines. In fact programmers, editing source code, very often want to work on whole lines, ranges of lines and blocks of code. However, yy is only one of many way to...

@TomWijsman Erm. Yeah. I'm learning as I'm reading. You're right.
@TomWijsman Hehe. That post looks like it was sprinkled with gray blocks
Now that section finally makes sense!
19:30
@TomWijsman What was that deleted message? :D
@slhck: Well, you seemed to have touched that blog post and it made an autosave from your revision (which had no modifications).
@TomWijsman I inserted the more tag into the latest revision, nothing else.
What went wrong?
Ah, it doesn't see that as a change apparently.
Well, it was complaining that the current revision != (auto)saved revision.
Just because we forgot that on some of the latest post
Hm, I see
Yeah, I'll try to think of it when reviewing. I forgot that too. Must've been not blogging for a while...
19:45
Oooh CompSci beta started
In the blog post: "This we can sort all the lines in our file using" -- shouldn't that be Thus?
Wow. Impressive how many of the 18 or so revisions of the original SO post (that made it CW) are single-character grammar/typo fixes.
Not by the original author.
20:02
@DanielBeck Corrected, I looked for incorrect words. But haven't really read into such details, also easy to look over I guess.
And that's why we should have multiple proof readers. :)
@TomWijsman Sorry, for this post I didn't have the time to go through it. I also thought since it was such a popular post it would have been reviewed already >_>
Saving my Office Product Keys in an OneNote private section must have been one of the dumbest ideas, lucky there exists tools like NirSoft ProduKey.
← useless tag alert
@SimonSheehan What?
oops. I saw it was listed as FAQ.. I removed the machine tag from one of them, and made the other virtual-machines.
@slhck Rage against the machine... tag!
20:11
@iglvzx Haha.. Stupid Windows Y U NO work? ?
@SimonSheehan Right… people tagging as virtual machine I guess :)
@slhck yep :) cleaning up the other 13 quickly.
This was a weird request, but I found a way:

Q: Converting SVG files to DOC

monksyHow can I convert an Inkscape SVG file to a Microsoft Word document?

Honestly, if you expect your SVG to edited by someone who only uses Word, then you should make your document in Word...
@iglvzx Sweet, lots of screenshots!
And done, there goes that tag.
@slhck Yeah. I'm worried that someone might answer before me while I'm planning out my screenshots. :P
20:16
@iglvzx You'd get the upvotes later ;)
@SimonSheehan Nice work, cheers!
@SimonSheehan highfive
Haha

Even cooler is the header on that page. Lots of fun! lol
@IvoFlipse I know you like to delete old stuff, so here you go: 1 2 3 4

@Raystafarian Cheers for fixing that answer, but it's plagiarized from this site
@slhck I figured it was from somewhere, but had no clue where
Googling the first sentence helps in most cases :P
I had to work to find the first sentence hahaha
Gonna flag it though, we don't encourage these kinds of answers.
haha
I don't understand the motivation behind these types of answers
20:55
Me neither. Recently had one that was copied from Microsoft
But there, the formatting was actually good :P
it's easier to just provide a link to it, that's hardly frowned upon
it's like.. you're doing too much work copy/pasting lol
