If your rep suddenly jumps up for no discernible reason, stay tuned to the Stack Exchange blog
lol
as opposed to cheer wildly?
01:51
@random Woohoo! Rollercoaster, I like SE... :)

Shog9 on March 05, 2012

If you’ve been around Meta Stack Overflow the past few days, you’ve seen a fair bit of conversation sparked by the recent changes to how reputation is calculated:

To be clear: reputation values are not changing, every action in the system is still worth the same amount. Here’s what will be different:

Your reputation will be correct at all times

Deletions will have a much more immediate effect on reputation, not waiting on a recalc (but reputation sync takes up to 5 minutes on a delete/undelete action; as to not block the user’s response thread, it’s offloaded to a background queue) …

03:11
I hope it doesn't cause rant about getting reputation... :D

Q: I had reputation automagically appear on Programmers.SE

Anthony PegramI have 130 unexplained reputation that just appeared this evening on Programmers.SE that I cannot account for. My reputation was at 444 prior to the change in reputation policy to do more frequent recalculations, and was at 398 yesterday prior to me deleting an answer with a +16 net rep score a...

Does a different set of RAM sticks result in processor overheating? :|
sounds stupid, but ever since I swapped the RAM sticks, my laptop's been running hotter than ever. I can't even play ME3 for more than 15-20 minutes without the laptop shutting down :|
@Sathya If you want an odd suggestion: "Update to the latest NVIDIA drivers"
If you have NVIDIA, they are fairly optimized for ME3.
But on the other hand, it sounds like you have done something wrong with inserting the RAM sticks. You might want to open up your laptop and double check your work. Perhaps get the fans cleaned out and all that...
@Sathya: If you have two RAM sticks, just make them change place might help. And a memory / stability test...
04:52
@TomWijsman I don't have nvidia
@TomWijsman no stability issues, already tested them. Fan's fairly clean, cleared out some more, not much change
@TomWijsman perhaps.. I'll reinstall the sticks. Also got a can of compressed air heading my way

Posted a blog idea in Trello. I want to do a "personal experience/review" type thing of Windows 8, complete with video of me writing it (so people can see it in action).
Of course this requires me using Windows 8 a bit more to get more comfortable using it. :P I am, but could be more :p

Q: How can I create a RW-Everything script to disable C-states in my Intel i5-2320 Processor?

Orion44My Intel i5-2320 Processor whines when it is in an idle state due to the Piezoelectric Effect. My OEM BIOS has locked me out from disabling this feature. Due to this, I need help creating a script in RW-Everything that can run when Windows loads to turn this feature off.

this question scares me in so many ways

also, piezo effect dosen't happen with just anything

@OliverSalzburg If you're reporting bugs to MSO, freehand circles are mandatory.
"If there's a visual anomaly associated with the bug, then post a screenshot, circling the portion that offends you. Applying a tasteful drop-shadow to your screenshot is optional; drawing the circles freehand is mandatory."
08:15
Thank you for the link @JourneymanGeek.
Nice. Questions list paging breaks when you enter page numbers in the URL instead of jumping between pages using the links at the bottom.
lol
@DanielBeck I favour greying out everything thats not important ;p
also, freehand circles must be red
this is the new sketchy beta theme
long live sketchy
08:30
@Sathya Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...........!!!
It doesn't even look beta-ish
I know, I thought that it was the new-theme for the site
@Sathya It could be though. Poker's still sketchy.
RPG and Christianity as well.
@DanielBeck Robert mentioned it's for Jewish Life and Learning only for now

Q: Your New Beta Theme

Robert CartainoYour site looks a bit different today. The design changes are a "sneak peek" at the new Stack Exchange Beta theme. Yes, we are getting rid of the 'Sketchy' look and replacing it with a more-polished and finished design for sites in beta. We chose Judaism SE to premiere this new theme because we ...

@Sathya So ... I need to register at Judaism.SE to downvote a network wide theme change? Nice.
08:39
I don't think it's too bad.
Didn't like the sketchy theme.
@slhck Nobody complained when it was gone though. Site graduation was also visually an important milestone. I can already see people complaining that they liked this beta theme better than the final one.
@DanielBeck Heh .. probably.
The Long Path Tool spam is becoming obnoxious again.
Must've flagged at least five of them until now.
got an example?

@TomWijsman What are you saying by this?
2
A: "$" is silently removed from links used in comments

Tom WijsmanIn links, $ should be replaced by %24. The intent should be to make the link conform to all RFCs, not break the link because of a single RFC.

That the SE engine should escape links with $ properly?
That I shouldn't be able to take the URL that's displayed in my browser and add it to a link the way it is?
Because, frankly, I don't see why users not familiar with the term RFC should check if the links they post are 100% conform. Especially if the browser shows them just fine, and even Wikipedia uses them.
09:26
This 3D printer for $350 looks pretty interesting.

Q: Flagging posts that answer the question with something the OP has already dismissed

slhck Note: This is a follow-up on Is “Y” really a valid answer to “I want X, and tried to do Y, but it doesn't work”? — because I don't think this is sufficiently answered, or at least doesn't seem too consistent in its approach. Also, we can't add bounties here. Furthermore, I asked this on Ask ...

I felt that wasn't sufficiently discussed
@slhck +1
More if I could.
@DanielBeck Heh. Thanks.
What was the rule on editing out spam text? Not doing it to enable database searches?
@DanielBeck Not doing it, yeah
@DanielBeck sadly for actual production, it would probably have to be bigger and a lot faster, though I think we've already made massive improvements in the past few years
@IvoFlipse For actual production, you're buying 5-plus-digit-priced printers.
As for you flag @slhck I agree, I would have deleted it, but I'd prefer the original mod to respond first. Besides, it would ruin you're whole point ;)
@DanielBeck I knew, though I'd prefer if those 5 were like 10.000 instead of 99.999
10:06
@IvoFlipse This needs to be consistently applied. There's no flag weight anymore, but it's still annoying that these useless posts survive.
I've worked on a project where they wanted to 3D print orthotics, designed using pressure measurements and 3D surface scans
@DanielBeck I deleted 350 posts yesterday, I think you don't have to convince me :)
Sadly, raising our accepted percentage by even 1% would mean deleting over 1000 questions...
@IvoFlipse It's just that equally useless-for-production devices are often in the $2-4k range. I want to print chess pieces or something like that, not prototype for business.
I'm tempted to propose deleting any unanswered (as in no answers at all) questions older than 12 months
If you didn't get an answer, then either we don't know, don't care or you didn't take the trouble to make us care
@IvoFlipse Not sure this is a good idea. There should be a question score in the rules somewhere.
@DanielBeck Some of the ZCorp printers would be sufficient for that, though I believe their printed objects are rather brittle
@DanielBeck My problem is: say you come from google thinking we have the solution and there's a year old question, still absolutely no hint of an answer, what good does that do?
Its nothing to be ashamed of if your question can't be answered
10:10
@IvoFlipse Sufficient for what? Chess pieces? They don't actually mention their prices on the web site.
Off course, if SE stopped indexing these, that would probably be enough
I think those are also in the 12k range, so I guess its a bit overkill :P
If you were to give a 3D printer to a skilled graphical designer, I think you could simply open up a shop to sell small statues, like book holders and what not or D&D figures
@IvoFlipse I rather like answering old questions. I've done it a few times. Good, actually rather easy questions for rather niche topics that needed someone to use search or the Community bump to get enough attention.
Well then you'll be pleased to hear I did use a question vote filter (for now)
but questions from 2009 or early 2010 are essentially dead, especially if the OP hasn't been active for over a year
@IvoFlipse I think that'd be rather cool from a "uniqueness" POV. Having something nobody else has. I think many people would be willing to pay a lot more for exclusivity like that.
@IvoFlipse Okay, cheers ;)
10:13
If you can come up with some simple 3D scanning, like this one I did with Kinect, then people can even personalize things to some degree
having Ogre's walking around with your face for instance :P
I don't think I've fully understood the whole daily rep cap. I went to sleep with 3454 and having hit 200 daily rep. Now I wake up with 3494 and my log tells me I've gained 10 rep today.
@IvoFlipse The "extended family chess board".
The sky is the limit :)
There's a reason I want one.
In the States I watched a TV show where a chef made insane cakes (Cake Boss I believe), his job would also be easier if he could 3D print molds in whatever shape he needed
10:16
Not willing to pay €1500+ though, and I kind of have two left hands, so I'd rather not get a Reprap kit that takes weeks to assemble.
> Suppose that each of 400 people is equally likely to vote yes or no on a school funding election. What's the size of a standard deviation for the total number of yes votes?
@DanielBeck Seconded, that's one reason for not doing it (yet)
I feel stupid for asking, but I have no idea how to come up with the standard deviation :S
@IvoFlipse It's a coin toss. This should help.
200 would vote 0, 200 would vote 1, mean is 0.5 then take (value-mean)^2 for all 400 and sum that and take the average?
@IvoFlipse Questions like that always sound as if they had a psychological component to it.
Like "Oh, you didn't factor in that people are 3.42% more likely to vote "yes" in general!!!"
@OliverSalzburg I suck at economics, simply because I couldn't parse their questions. Given I had no trouble with Physics or Chemistry, you'd expect it has something to do with their questions
sigma_x=\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{n}
Hmmm so just 0.5 * sqrt(400)
10:24
@IvoFlipse Looks reasonable with smaller sample counts as well.
yeah the post above it does: sqrt ( n * p * (1-p) )
which ends up being the same as the second post

A: How to set Mac OS X's Default Compression Format?

MiguelIf you know Objective-C, you could try using SIMBL to inject your code into the Finder. After you install and configure it, attach to the Finder process (as r...

That's another one that's just awkward :S
I always hated those "looks like an answer, but is missing the step right before 'profit!'" answers.
I would assume 4!, which is 24, but if they need to satisfy transitivity, then I have no clue
10:28
@IvoFlipse It's 4! and the transitivity bit is just redundant.
It just means an ordering is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and not like Rock-Paper-Scissors
> About which of the following attributes of a computer would someone likely have SPATIAL preferences?
You got to pick: processing speed, screen size, special keys on keyboard and battery life
He said: Screen Size would probably be spatial. You'd have an ideal size for the computer. Speed would probably not be -- more speed is better. Battery life would not be -- more battery life is better. Number of special keys would probably be spatial as well -- we all like some, but no one would want eighty more
That's BS, pick a higher Processing speed and you'll have less battery life. You can't have both, hence you have to make trade offs, isn't that like the whole point :P
Ah well, I scored 8.25/12 Good enough for me :P
In case you're interested, this is for Coursera's Model Thinking course
@IvoFlipse What's a SPATIAL preference?
Hot |---1---2-----------3--| Cold
Say you like cold drinks, you prefer 3 over the rest, because its closer to your preference
10:36
Ah I get it.
Your example's off though
That explains why I didn't get the question right ;)
You like cold drinks, but shouldn't be below 2 degrees Celsius or so.
Hehe, perhaps
The computer answers are consistent with "I want some, but not the extremes".
Would anyone be interested in getting a Raspberry Pi? If possible at all?
Or something similar
10:39
@IvoFlipse Sure.
Any idea if we can even order them somewhere, I reckon their first batch is already sold out
And I wondered this morning where those 50 or so rep came from.
@DanielBeck What a butthurt that whole situation is
Are they serious though? Awarding 1000 rep for the "Firefox" answer to important programs?
Should only apply to topics with less than 8 or so answers. Otherwise it's just about polling.
@IvoFlipse They are going to sell through major resellers
So, no badges
10:44
@DanielBeck Please, don't start a counter argument, its bad as it is :P
@OliverSalzburg Like which?
@IvoFlipse Element14 to my knowledge
And another one, there was a small announcement.
They also said that that would allow them to supply continously.
Instead of their batch model they wanted to deploy earlier.
Interesting, it would be nice if we could hand out a couple
@IvoFlipse The "Historical lock" sounds a lot like what I once suggested on MSU, allowing posts to be marked obsolete.
Unfortunately, it's only entire topics, not answers as well.
@DanielBeck Perhaps we should be more pro-active about moving some of our golden oldies to the blog
But its unfair, I couldn't log in the first day until after work, so all the easy answers were already taken :(
@IvoFlipse Why? (It's a serious question)
10:50
@DanielBeck So we can delete them
> And since it’s Women’s day, we’re all going to wear ethnic attire. Colours for the day are pink and purple
ugh
@Sathya ethnic attire?
@DanielBeck yeah
It seems I need to look up the definition of ethnic.
we generally wear what's um, western wear to work
western wear == formal suits/ shirts/pants
10:57
lol
Indian Ethnic...Dhoti+shirt or jibba kurta... i don't see it working in pink and purple
I know.. T_T
@JourneymanGeek Weird, pink and purple usually goes with everything.

I am native geek

@OliverSalzburg Which one?

First time, so I'm extra-proud ;)
Nice answer.
Thanks. Incidentally, I also got that badge for that answer :D
@OliverSalzburg I was sure a comment about that would come.

@DanielBeck Felt kind of mandatory.
Preparing taxes, or looking at cat pictures with funny captions... hmmm...

lol
@DanielBeck: Cat pictures, naturally
@DanielBeck Cat pictures are so 2009
Plus, you probably get money out of preparing taxes.
haha, always makes me chuckle

this is pretty cool - one of the dragonfly bsd programmes found a bug in some amd processors
@slhck In case it's new to you: ifconfig.me/ip

@OliverSalzburg I know that service, yeah :) – the other one's easier to remember I guess
@JourneymanGeek That's too high for me
@JourneymanGeek advanced
@slhck AirPort is connected to Supersaurus?
@slhck Well, I'll have to pay less, but it's not like I get money back.
So there's still time.

@Iain: Neither are SU The caching one is more pro webmasters or something and the question on ethernet adaptors involves a set top box
IMO
@JourneymanGeek Home networking is on topic
Despite involving "electronic devices"
@DanielBeck: well, my concern is, the set top box isn't quite standard, so there may not be a right answer
And there's not really much information in the question
It was such a stupid idea to enable sound on all these VMs...
It's a Linux.
I'd grant that.

"Why unnecessarily??? Based on what are you affirming that? What would be a necessarily edit to bump old and unansweared posts?"
@DanielBeck: I mean it in the "STOP RAISING THE DEAD, YOU MADMAN" kind of necromancy
@DanielBeck Ugh …
Could someone support me in that comment thread?
@DanielBeck Done
14:24
Oh boy how I love these. I install an English Windows 7, run updates and, of course, get the Browser Selection because I'm located in Germany. Of course I don't care about the browser, so I click Internet Explorer. Only to be told "You can't install this version of Internet Explorer because your operating systems language is not supported".
I actually do edit in links, bit only in current questions
Someone needs to suffer for that browser selection. And it seems to be me
@OliverSalzburg: "Come and see the violence inherent in the system. Help! Help! I'm being repressed!"

(As an anglophile geek in denial, i utterly have to quote monty python occationally ;p)
also, i seem to think IE is already installed
it just forces you to pick a default

I should have never said something
he always misses the point entirely
@slhck Wow.
And. he called it a forum

Also what part of chat or Meta didn't he understand?

@JourneymanGeek It is, but if you click IE in that dialog, it tries to download the latest version (which is automatically picked as German). And that installer fails cause of the language incompatibility.
and, i rejected another tag wiki edit
@slhck: all of it? ;p

okay, cool
lol
stop fighting people ;p ;p
@slhck: He also misses the point of community moderation ;p
@HackToHell No one's up for fighting. There is a sort of etiquette here, and he's trying to ignore it.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, it's not like we have … 85k rep combined…
14:35
lol
precisely
@HackToHell I'm the last person who wants to fight over such trivial things, but unless the system allows others to monitor and (constructively) criticize such behavior other than writing a comment, then I feel I have to do that.
He can do whatever he want, but he's trusted to make his own (editing) decisions and be open to criticism.
And writing a comment is better than flagging
@slhck I did not mean that, it's just funny :D and it's kinda interesting how different people behave.
@slhck Oh no he takes it seriously :(
hmm, with respect to the tips and tricks tag..
people do not understand my jokes :'(
14:37
@HackToHell Yeah … I mean, could've taken one minute to come to chat, we would've explained rationally.
@HackToHell Haha, sorry :D
@JourneymanGeek What about it?
gonna take a look at it, does anyone think that creating seperate posts so we can organise (and edit) closed, closable and things that will do ok sans the tag and so on is a good idea
any edits can be done by other users with sufficient rep, or via comment
@slhck :) That's just sooo human, maybe he's pissed or drunk o_0 or just he does not like listening to anyone.
@HackToHell It'd bet on the latter.
There was another meta discussion once where he ragequit.
lol. Lost in translation as well
and maybe cultural things
@slhck Not permanently though.
14:42
@DanielBeck True that.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, like make a list of stuff to close / delete, that'd be good
Then just retag those that need retagging / fixing anyway
and leave the rest for tag burnination
@DanielBeck Have you seen this and this? :)
@slhck ...no?
@DanielBeck Okay, thought you might have seen it at some point based on the number of revisions.
I had upvoted the original answer though. Interesting posts.
@slhck Wow. He's been writing his answer for two days? He's crazier than any of us.
@DanielBeck Haha.. He's even giving away all his rep by editing too often.
14:51
@JourneymanGeek haha, not bad – post it on meta!
@slhck Hahaha
Priceless
let's see how many flags it takes to automatically disappear

I don't know whether I got in, it disappeared when I submitted the flag.
@DanielBeck Yeah, it automatically disappears then when the threshold is reached.
I once flagged a comment and – poof – it was gone. Something old about "wrong site, ask there!"
