1:00 PM
oh wait, it works fine on fsf.org, because Stallman insists on being able to turn off "non-free" JS

@JourneymanGeek it's a supermarket chain.

I don't really see how Vivaldi is any different from Chrome, since it uses the same renderer
is the appeal OOOOH COLORS?
the ability to make your tab bar diagonal at a 45 degree angle across the middle of your screen?

That's not a bad feature.

@satibel I am aware of that

the stackable tabs are great too.

1:04 PM
@allquixotic oddly yes. In theory my current layout could be replicated in that

and the general customizability
and innovation.

I don't get it.
funreaper.com doesn't work.
sites.google.com/a/funreaper.com/funreaper is up and online and that's what funreaper.com points to. Can someone tell me why it isn't working?

My eyes.
@Nick how is it being redirected?

@JourneymanGeek What? looks at the link. My eyes.

@JourneymanGeek Frameset
@Nick Broken html validator.w3.org/…
The blank first line may not help

1:18 PM
This is the highly sophisticated technical backend provided by Godaddy.

@Nick Well using a frameset is not forwarding :)

Activate your Windows before you blame GoDaddy for anything

@DavidPostill Tell that to GoDaddy

@Nick Why should I? It's not my crappy website ...

1:20 PM
@OliverSalzburg You're not the boss of me. I use ubuntu most of the time nowadays.
@DavidPostill xD true. Godaddy is not your website.
** burn averted **

actual reason:
sites.google.com/a/funreaper.com/funreaper/:1 Refused to display 'https://sites.google.com/a/funreaper.com/funreaper/' in a frame because it set 'X-Frame-Options' to 'SAMEORIGIN'.
same origin policy

@satibel It's still completely broken html regardless.

@DavidPostill @nick the doctype isn't HTML5

@Burgi What's that got to do with the price of fish?
@Burgi What's that got to do with the price of fish?

@DavidPostill its weird to make a webpage not in HTML5 these days

1:29 PM
It's HTML 4.01 Strict and fails validation.

@DavidPostill its weird to make a webpage not in HTML5 these days
also the SSL is broken

@Burgi everything is broken

its the images from iconarchive
does a funreaper kill fun?

Bob
@allquixotic Omnibar Awesomebar effectively is the default, and has been for years now... you have the additional search box but the main bar has allowed searching for that long.
You hide can hide the search bar, but you don't need to do anything else to activate searching in the 'main' bar - it's already enabled.
And, yea... I use the exact same Ctrl+T, search workflow. Have used it for the better part of a decade.
^ Bias lighting and a messy desk

@Bob as a fox do you make your desk messy so you don't have to rummage through the bins?

Bob
1:35 PM
@Burgi :(

thats what foxes do in the UK

@allquixotic what's an omnibar in regards to a web browser?

@Seth the top bar thing
where the URL is

But that's the same for FF and Chrome as far as I can tell or am I missing a feature? At least on WIndows.

the omnibar does search as well as the place to type a URL

Bob
1:38 PM
@Burgi Yea, uh... the 'omnibar' is technically a Chrome-specific name. And the search + URL thing ... I'm pretty sure I used that in IE8
*shrug*
Actually, correction.

Hm~ well at least my Firefox does that as well, though you still have the option to use "alternative" search engines using the actual search bar right next to it.

Bob
Omnibar is a Firefox addon. Omnibox is the Chrome name for it.
(Awesomebar being the Firefox name for it)
End of the day? It's an address bar.

That does search if it's not a URL or it thinks it's not an URl.

Bob
@Seth Yea, I did kinda say this has been a thing across all browsers for like 10 years.
It's literally older than Chrome.

hm~ must have missed that, sorry.

Bob
1:40 PM
Hm. Actually I should check if IE8 actually does that.

IE 11 at least does.

Bob
Ok, not IE8.
IE9 does. I just checked.
Hm. Not older than Chrome then.

IE8 has got an extra search bar like FF

@Bob still bright as hell.

1:46 PM
f.lux is great.
but what annoys me is that (indoor) screen brightness for me is
0%: usable >=1%: bright as fuck.

Bob
@satibel it's supposed to be bright... also, the camera autofocus messes with it a bit :P
the idea is to not have too sharp a contrast with the background
@Burgi FF has the bar but you can search from the main bar too

I mean the screen is bright
not the back lighting.

Bob
@satibel the screen's supposed to be bright too :P
if I wanted it dim I'd turn it down

I hate that 0% means actually 50% for the screen manufacturers.

@Bob heh, I have my screens turned down pretty low

1:55 PM
all of my screens are at 0% x)

the dell's on 32%
(same screen @Bob has ;p)

hey, I found the text mode on my second screen.
to actually dim the screen, I need to also put all colors to the minimum.
got to go, bye

2:26 PM
Morning
much beter sleeping today \o/

gOOD mORNING

the community around osticket are proper grumpy

lol
@Burgi TTRSS's support forums are the best/worst
I think fox, as awesome as he is, would likely get suspended in 2-3 posts

2:35 PM
@Burgi ow
also. that guy dosen't exactly seem to be a dev either, so he's just proper grumpy ;p

i think he is the community manager

._.
I'm starting to see why you think I'd make a decent one XD
(That said, not revealing anything I shouldn't, most of the ones we have here are great, if a little unobtrusive)

its something we need as our users are idiots but if its being rolled into an update i won't bother installing it myself

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ??

2:40 PM
@Bob gothfox. The grumpy chap who writes it

yeah so if they were going to add it to a patch in the next couple of months i wouldn't bother installing it but now its obvious that i will have to add it myself

@Burgi seems like there's better way to say "hell if I know" ;p

3:07 PM
@Burgi Why is bob trying to be african-american.

naw. that's a gothfox

we got nominated for that "offensive" design awards

"Yay?"

@Burgi uh, who are you there?

3:13 PM
o0

the bacon one was veto'd by the management here so the guy submitted it on his own

not getting that one

the parents have no faces
it wasn't one i voted for tbh

3:25 PM
the stepladder one is clever

not seen that one

not one of ours but i like it: chipshopawards.com/entries/8070

3:49 PM

Spam or just a weird question?

Yes

I'd just close and delete and see what happens
gut instinct says wierd question tho

Putting a link in the title is a bad start.

he mentions having a software engineering account. Yet is unreglistered here
I've actually heard of triz
and yeah, certainly off topic here ;p

Exactly. Very strange. He has a degree from Harvard. linkedin.com/in/jorge-daukantas-5bb56592

@Bob GamingSchedule? Mine: Free starting 8 hours + 15 minutes from time of sending this message. Non-free when I fall asleep. Nothing really planned for the weekend so should be free anytime.

Are quad-layer blu-ray discs the current best form of large-scale long term archival?

6:13 PM
no
hdds
or tape

Tape drives are way too expensive for personal use.

And mechanical hard drives are what I am currently using.

u said large scale

@djsmiley2k Sorry, I should have clarified. By "large scale" I meant something larger than the capacity of a traditional recordable DVD.

6:15 PM
@tereško lol
@NathanOsman rent space with 3 cloud providers~?
how many tb?

About 500 GB or so.
...which is why I was thinking quad-layer bluray.
I would only need 4 or 5 of them.

@NathanOsman yeah .. tape

is that including for redudancy, and multi locations?

I'm sorry, but that is the reality

Also are you gonna pull them out every year, and test them, fully?
I currently have my backup copied to google, and to ovh

6:17 PM
@djsmiley2k For the sake of this discussion, let's say yes :D

i just dont trust something untested

I have a NAS that is storing one copy here, so I only really need one additional copy stored somewhere else.

gdrive

They only give you what... 15 GB free? :P

ovh, soyoustart, backblaze

6:18 PM
Actually...
Backblaze was something I was considering at one point.

how much are you about to blow on blurays?

About $100 for the drive + discs.

S3? Glacial storage?

Backblaze B2 is cheaper than Amazon Glacier.
So, if I understand what everyone is saying correctly, bluray would be alright if I regularly test them and store them off-premises. Tape would be ideal but is prohibitively expensive for home use. And cloud storage is an option if I can afford the monthly costs long-term.
The other downside of cloud-storage is limits on uploading and downloading.

cloud gives herd immunity xD

6:21 PM
My monthly bandwidth cap (from my ISP) is 150 GB.

Not my fault :P
And if you think that's bad, the upload speed is only 1 Mbps.

cant you get like a 1Tb drive...... ship it somehwere, done
i uploaded 1.5tb to gcloud on 3mb

@djsmiley2k Do mechanical drives retain data well for long periods of time (10+ years)?

dont talk to me about slow :P
yes

6:23 PM
I know SSDs don't.

well move proven than disks that arent even 10 yrs old lol

(But cost-wise, they aren't that great anyway.)

i remember the 'archival' optical cds of the 90s

Yes, I remember those too.

guess what happens when you find out 5 years later they dont workl??

6:24 PM
In the past, I've been using CDs and later DVDs for archival.
But their limited size is a problem now.
@djsmiley2k Hopefully, you still have the original copy? :P

@NathanOsman I still use them to store tv shows.

its only just over 100 DVDs

@djsmiley2k Yes, but then I have to supervise reloading the disc tray, etc.
That's a pain for 100 discs.

pffft time

6:25 PM
your making e xcuses lol
tape is best

Yeah... I get that.

hdd is next, then optical

What price would I be looking at?
Just out of curiosity?

but, kept at the right temps, no light, etc
for?

6:26 PM
@djsmiley2k A decent tape drive.
Nothing fancy or even necessarily fast.

@NathanOsman I honestly have no idea, they are a pain to maintain too, hense why i used cloud

Where does cloud fit into the order?

id say its with hdds, depinf how much you trust the hoster

Backblaze has been around for a while.
I might give them a shot then.

yeah they seem really good

6:28 PM
After all, it is a backup so if something happens, in theory, I should have the original copy here still which can be used to seed a new copy.

and just pick up an external too lol
exactly

@djsmiley2k Well I have the NAS.
...which is a backup for the internal drive anyway.

is the nas another copy?

Yes.

ah ok fine

6:29 PM
Well, for the important stuff.
There is lots of transient data I don't care about enough to backup.

reason i suggest an external is you can just leave it somewhere

Right. That's what the company I work for does (off premises external hard drives which they rotate).

6:43 PM
What's giving me a headache about cloud storage solutions for backups is encryption. :/ Optimally I'd be able to access individual files but that would potentially mean encryption of individual files.

rent server, run owncloud

owncloud is written in PHP though...

$2.30/TB/month for ovh archive

It's really, really affordable. But having encryption containers or archives would mean I'd need 50% free space. Putting it on my own server could be fun ... if I go for only the important data.

7:30 PM
I have a few servers but none have any significant amount of disk space.

7:55 PM
@Nick 185 TB tapes!!!

8:26 PM
O_O
| Google and Facebook have confirmed that they fell victim to an alleged $100m (£77m) scam.

8:51 PM
Interesting one for tonight... Bought a car a few weeks ago and it had a small device stuck to the inside of the windshield. Almost seemed like a transponder / gate access device. Has one wire running into the top of the car.... Not sure where it goes. It's totally unlabeled and opening it up even revealed almost nothing...

@SimonSheehan It's so the black helicopters can track you ...

Really bothered by it. I cut the wire and took it out because it was physically damaged and falling out... Just really wondering what it was
@DavidPostill hahaha. I do live right beside a military base too :)

@SimonSheehan Could be an external to internal antenna?
Or a GPS antenna

@Mokubai Perhaps a GPA unit that is no longer present, that's an idea

ask on reddit or something

8:56 PM
I may just do that, see what people think

that number is appently a gem xD
someone'll know
taxi thing maybe?

@djsmiley2k Unlikely on an impreza ;)
but yeah, something some reddit user might know instantly perhaps.

If you've got a heated windscreen, some of them block gps'
lowjack?

@SimonSheehan What's on the other side of the circuit board (if that is what it is)?

got a pic of the top?
scroll down to about 1/4 way down page
is it THAT thing?
Or one of these... ebay.com/itm/…
anyway, going to work
let me know if im right :D

9:58 PM
hmmm
So, not right then? XD

10:27 PM
@djsmiley2k @djsmiley2k I'll have to dig into things and find the other side of the cable.. that should answer things faster probably :P

10:58 PM
@SimonSheehan sure :D

@SimonSheehan does the car have an external radio antenna?

11:43 PM
it might of ;)

@JourneymanGeek Outside of the factory one for radio, nope.

11:59 PM
ah. some cars have internal ones on the front windshield
