erf. Perils of being a mod. Agreeing with a comment flag that its not nice and the comment.
As promised last night... starting NetBeans.
22 hours ago, by bwDraco
I'm just not familiar with modern browser internals. I really need to get back to studying JS...
01:05
Try to be nice to others, please.
o/ @JourneymanGeek
To quote a Taylor Swift song "Now, sit in a corner and think about what you just did" ;p
Also, that was actually pretty funny
I was really unsure on that one.
01:09
@bwDraco I can do my own verbal fencing.
An appropriate response would be
NO U!
It sounded funny, but at the same time, it sounded like mockery. I didn't want to give unnecessary attention.
@bwDraco and now you are
and that reinforces the behaviour.
This was an extraordinarily difficult judgment call.
Now, how do we sort things out here? ;p
"Hey, that wasn't nice" is good enough
I wanted to say "please be nice" but I'm still ignored.
01:12
Yeah and we do have other mods to deal with it too. And ROs and I deal with things eventually
The border that separates "flag without comment" and "respond, nudging the user towards the correct action" is really ill-defined.
If someone is mocking me, it is significantly more entertaining to let me deal with it.
So an appropriate response is to grab some popcorn and go "Hey @TOWMN, its not nice to make fun of @Journeymangeek"
My first instinct was to say "please don't mock the mods" but I wasn't sure if bringing attention to the message was a good idea.
If its a new user or someone who is clearly uncomfortable, whack it.
> Please don't mock the mods :P
That last :P can be decisive here.
01:14
especially considering how your interactions with @TOWMN have traditionally been... somewhat fraught with peril
This was a toughie.
I guess I still need to spend more time interacting with others :\
Ah well. No biggie. I guess I'll watch and learn. Going forward, I'll probably be asking on Ask a Super User Moderator: "what's the correct action to take, if any, on <message>?"
I'd have rejected the flag, had I not been having breakfast
@bwDraco a good chunk of the time, a good question to ask is "How would the person the message is aimed at respond" and "what is the intent?"
The question that came up is "what is the user trying to achieve?"
I had determined that TOWMN was trying to get attention but erroneously handled it as trolling.
01:20
I saw it as a throwaway line in an attempt to make a joke.
So, is asking in the mod room a good idea for borderline cases like this?
@bwDraco or leaving it
But can I at least ask if I'm unsure?
The reason I refused to ask was that I was concerned about drawing attention.
Yeah, but more often than not, the answer is "leave it"
I mean, the moment a mod's aware, you have the second highest law of the land handling things ;p
So how serious was this mistake?
01:23
@JourneymanGeek I'm not making fun, I'm making nasty
</hates dogs>
Also how is it everything is so expensive in Australia, except somehow Dominoes and McDonald's are actually cheaper
lol
@TOWMN upside down
Feb 9 at 22:23, by bwDraco
Folks, this is what I mean when I say my lack of a sense of humor is a serious enough issue to cause disruption.
To the point I feel guilty about walking out of Dominoes with a $5 pizza
01:24
@TOWMN I'll supertree you one of these days, just you wait.
@TOWMN If you feel guilty about it, then pay for it next time. :P
@TOWMN more seriously, I wouldn't be suprised if their raw material costs are cheaper
@JourneymanGeek Hmm
Maybe I shouldn't feel guilty then
They occasionally do £5 deals in the UK, but that's still 60% more
Difference is in the UK that £5 is like, minimum wage for a 16 year old kid and could buy two sandwiches or four bottles of coke
Here it's like, not. And can't buy one sandwich. And could just about get one bottle of coke...
@GypsySpellweaver There's no option to pay more for it than the marked price :-/
Also whiskey tango foxtrot
I say "boobs" and get a 24 hour ban accused of trolling someone I didn't know was even here.
I deliberately and explicitly troll that same person and insult a mod, and get no ban.
</consistency of rules application>
@TOWMN eh, you were acting immature
I'm always acting immature, because I am immature
That's kinda how developmental disorders work.
01:29
!!s/developmental disorders/being a cat/
@JourneymanGeek That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
Or to put it politically correctly, "learning difficulty"
@JourneymanGeek That's kinda how being a cat work. (source)
Or to put it politically incorrectly, being retarded.
Well, in fact, I'd say it's muchaifhjhsdjlgvbCKLZXB x
01:29
But my government thinks I'm no longer retarded enough to get my retard benefits so :-/
@TOWMN I have one too. Also, you and @bwDraco have... a rather interesting and annoying dynamic.
2
@JourneymanGeek That's why he's blocked, so we never have to interact
@TOWMN other than him flagging you ;p
@TOWMN Catch 22: If you can complain about lack of disability benefits, then you don't have a serious enough disability..
Well, I've been fighting my condition for years and would love to improve.
01:30
But he still likes to sit there lurking in the background deliberately taking offence at stuff that has nothing to do with him cause I don't even know he's there and flag trolling me
Yeah what you said, more succinctly :-|
And really, there could be much worse concequences. However, you do seem smart enough to go "hey, this gets me in trouble"
@ThatBrazilianGuy -_
If it was anyone else that suspension might stand.
@JourneymanGeek I'm smart enough to interpret and follow rules, if they're clear and consistent...
But you've been here a while. I'd rather tell you where things arn't right, since you clearly seem bright enough to understand what they are.
01:31
"Speed limit 50" - easy
Again, it was borderline and I originally hesitated to flag.
"Speed limit - 48 if the cop is in a bad mood, 60 if you're white, 5 if you're black" - not so easy
@TOWMN you also clearly realise you were mocking me and trolling, and that those things arn't quite right.
@JourneymanGeek Yes but I dislike you because you're a) A dog and b) Ban me a lot
meh, I mindjailed you once
01:32
Just like real dogs and cats we merely... tolerate each other's presence
Let me go check how many times I have suspended you ;p
Also I sometimes use you for Singaporean wisdom
You've agreed with others when they suspended me, that counts the same in my mindjail!
ahh, once
@TOWMN or not noticed ;p
@JourneymanGeek Oh I got flagged? :-(
TBH I was expecting that one
@TOWMN and I manually unsuspended you
01:34
Aww, thanks. <3
Cause I'd rather deal with this ;p
I didn't notice I got suspended actually, cause I was having breakfast :-|
So now you know you got suspended, why, and are clearly aware that was inappropriate behaviour.
I think the suspension did its job no?
@JourneymanGeek See that works
Most useful 2 minute suspension ever.
01:36
Now when other mods suspend me with the totally useless explanation of "Don't do that" pointing to a message saying "I love Burgi" it's f******* frustrating
Why am I even here
But that's why they mail me t shirts every so often ;p
I hardly contribute to the site except when I get one lucky HNQ
Well, on good days you're a valued member of this chat room.
this seems to outweigh the bad days, least for most folks.
And on bad days I get banned and ragequit
If you were an actual troll
01:38
Can you see where I answered my one question this year? :-P
You've seen exactly how much mercy and patience I have ;p
have a Windows 10 laptop I want to prep for resale without reinstalling the OS; any "relatively safe" programs that'll wipe out log files, wifi configs, etc. so I don't have to?
would hate to have to do a manual shred and reinstall
(it's an SSD)
hm
I wonder if sysprep would do it.
or just refresh, then hit the drive with crypt?
@allquixotic Sysprep then wipe unused space?
I thought reinstalling was pretty easy these days anyway
I didn't even have to bother with most drivers on my latest-gen Alienware
Certainly nothing like the old days of install => Reboot => Update windows update => reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Run windows update => Reboot => Done
lol, nice, found it in the settings app, TY
01:43
Don't laptops usually have a "Restore to factory" thing anyway?
Or have you wiped that? :-P
well yeah this is a default retail w10 install lol
Sadly none of my laptops ever survive intact enough for resale by the time I want to resell them :-(
I'm getting back half of what I paid for it
plus already made $20 on loaning it out to someone
Nice. How old is it?
@TOWMN If you find out let me know, I have no idea either (of why I'm here).
01:47
June 2014
it's a low end laptop, too, but a poor person who's a friend of a friend wants an upgrade
Not bad
they have like a gig of RAM and a slow HDD
they're getting a 250 GB SSD and 4 gigs of RAM
Bay Trail-N lol
I need a cheap tablet thing and am almost willing to stoop down to Atom
Gonna see how well the power sockets on Qatar's A350's react to my 240W power adapter
convertible, or just an x86 tablet? or does it not have to be x86?
@allquixotic Needs to be Windows, but convertible or not doesn't really matter. It's just gonna be secondary to my Alienware laptop
For when I can't be bothered with the effort of lifting the huge heavy thing out of my bag (it's seriously a large amount of effort just getting it out and putting it back in)
01:49
....
if you have no income, you are living like there's no tomorrow
flying Qatar? isn't that like 17k per flight?
@allquixotic It's so big it barely fits into 17" laptop backpacks and I've never managed to find a 15" bag it'll fit in at all
@allquixotic Err no it's like, £580 return from UK to Australia
I think I've still got most of the 200 quid I drew a few months ago ;p
They were the cheapest option on Skyskanner at the time (Turkish were £480 on a different date though)
Emirates, now they're the expensive ones
@allquixotic I think Qatar's basically decided to turn themselves into a low-fares long-distance transit company
Pretty much everyone I saw getting on or off Qatar in Doha was basically just transferring from one flight to another. Didn't see even one person actually going into the Exit lane
Qatar is in a pretty decent location for Europeans transiting to Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. And sometimes South America too. Even saw one itinerary where it was cheaper flying via Qatar to USA
Also Qatar flies direct from Edinburgh to Doha then Melbourne/Adelaide/Sydney whereas BA and/or Qantas require changing in London and Sydney to get to Adelaide
01:54
way I see it, you probably either have a huge inheritance, or have earned a fortune (and in either case aren't telling us), or you're a drug dealer, or you sell P2417H monitors on Amazon marked up by $50 and labeled as U2417Hs
@allquixotic Lol. Sadly, none of the above. And I'm trying to save money now rather than living like there's no tomorrow.
(I didn't extend my stay in Oz, saving me like, £500...)
I'm also a first-gen immigrant with parents who grew up in dirt farms with no running water or electricity, so no inheritance there...
where'd they emigrate from?
If memory serves, china
01:58
Yup
amusingly, I have no clue what @TOWMN's gender is
@allquixotic: the way the money situation really turned out was I spent two and a half years living in a boring shithole with no life, on a fairly decently paid IT job, never going out and spending all my spare time at home playing computer games on my 6 year old Nehalem system.
@JourneymanGeek that's fine, neither does my doctor
Oh
That actually gives some context.
If I may ask, what does your passport say/what do you present as?
Or as one performer at the Adelaide Fringe festival put it, good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, trans, intersex, and everyone else who just can't be f***ed subscribing to a gender.
@JourneymanGeek Passport says male. I present as confused. Hence why the Thai immigration officer looked at me and went "Why u look like woman?"
Ah ok
I'll stick to they then ;)
02:03
that's what you'd get if you came to Trumpland
I looked at her and thought "yknow I'm glad we're in Asia cause back home someone would kick up a riot about that"
Also in Europe people would kick up a riot if everyone drove around like madmen on two wheels completely ignoring all traffic rules and signs. But I'm glad in Thailand the police don't give two f***s as long as you pay for their donuts once a month
... I'm shocked...
cops in thailand eat donuts too?
Why wouldn't they?
I think there's a global union of police gastronomists who require that to work as a policeperson you have to like doughnuts
donno, regional preferences?
I'm pretty sure in india it would be chai and buns or something
02:08
Regional preferences => regional donuts
@JourneymanGeek so basically Indian donuts
"China" is more like "Chai-na" amirite? :P
salty doughnuts
vada!
I've had them. :)
one of the pushier Indians at work took everyone to lunch because someone was having some event -- either new to the company, leaving, transferring away, got some huge award, I don't even remember -- 3 or 4 years ago...
learned I was veggie and took me down the veggie line at the Indian restaurant's buffet and had me get EVERYTHING
sambar, all the chutneys and sauces, vada, dosa, various things with "masala" in the name, etc
02:11
lol
sadly they didn't have poppadoms, which I really like
and only learned that later
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic You can just run the reinstall/wipe/rebuild thing from within Win10... no need for install media etc
lol
appalam > poppadoms
also there's two types of those, rice, and ulundu.
IIRC Sysprep keeps some logs and probably the WiFi passwords too?
@JourneymanGeek the poppadoms I like are made of gram flour
02:15
@allquixotic the difference is poppadoms typically have baking powder in em
appalams don't (and are bigger)
the rice ones are slightly spicier and have a different texture
(also, the microwave trick)
you can lightly smear water on unfried poppadoms, and microwave them. Effect is mostly like frying ;p
Bob
Bob
beanshell, fishwife... Java lib naming is fun
org.fishwife.jrugged is maintained by Comcast :P
Well, good night. I'm hoping to start the day earlier tomorrow.
02:31
There's a place called n******s bounce in Australia...
British comedian mentioned it.
HOW HAVE YOU NOT CHANGED THE NAME
I think I'm buying my next tablet at a pharmacy store. No, really.
Heh.
@TOWMN nsixasterisks bounce?
@TOWMN Nutsacks Bounce?
I think we have a few places like that here in NZ.
> New Zealand is set to rid of its racist place names in the South Island.

Three place names in North Canterbury containing the word "n*****" will be changed due to the offence caused by the word.

N***** Stream, near Arthur's Pass, will now officially be named Pūkio Stream after a native grass found in the area.

N*****head, located above Lake Sumner, will be called Tawhai Hill after a species of native Beech Tree found in the South Island.

N***** Hill, to the east of Arthur's Pass, will be renamed Kānuka Hills after a species of native tea tree that grows in the area.
02:34
Yea, here we go.
wow, we totally don't have that many places with that name...
@MichaelFrank yeah, here apparently they protest heavily anytime someone suggests changing the name.
I'm sure there's a less offensive reason for it...
They like "WERE NOT CHANGING THE NAME IT'S ALWAYS BEEN CALLED THAT"
Comedian goes "Not before you guys came here it didn't, that's not what the natives called it!"
i'm lazy so I want to be able to boot up my Windows partition from inside a VM instead of rebooting.
But people say it can corrupt my data and I'm lazy and don't want to reinstall Windows and all my Steam library.
I'm calling it the Lazyness Paradox.
02:36
@JourneymanGeek No, it pretty much is how it looks. They're historical places, named during times the word was much more commonly used.
Apparently comedian also said you can't search for it by name on Google maps but that's obviously a lie.
ah
@TOWMN FAKE NEWS!
Maybe on desktop the autocomplete censors n****** like it does on instant search
@TOWMN dosen't autocomplete
So Google's stance is basically: If you wanna search for racist terms, you better know how to spell it, cause we ain't helping!
3
02:39
@MichaelFrank just see what happens when I scroll down...
@MichaelFrank according to the comedian you have to enter the coordinates but evidently on mobile maps they've either learnt I can't be offended or just haven't implemented the censor
> they've either learnt I can't be offended
This is plausible
@MichaelFrank good job my autocomplete on my phone keypad can bridge the gap!
Also, golliwogs
I have a golly at home. No idea where it came from though.
Apparently they hid them for a week from shop fronts when Oprah came over
Oh and if anyone's in Adelaide I'd recommend going to see the show "Australia: A Whinging Poms Guide"
You learn all these super facts and more.
@MichaelFrank I don't think I've ever seen one IRL
I read poms as something else.
02:46
Maybe I should buy one and declare it at customs to see what they say
@JourneymanGeek Using Google Maps app in iOS 6, iPod touch, I have to get the first word, but not the space, then it suggests lots of places, including many with pseudonyms, like Lost C**n Lake, MT
I don't think they're illegal anywhere, just frowned upon?
"anything to declare?" *Pulls out a Gollywog and waves it at the immigration officer"GOLLYWOG!!!!!!
@JourneymanGeek :DD
@MichaelFrank I'm yet to understand why they exist. BRB Wikipedia...
02:48
@TOWMN It's a black person...
Or a depiction from like the late 19th century?
Well this explains everything nothing
Pretty much it's a leftover from when casual racism was fine
> The image of the doll has become the subject of controversy. Its depiction of black people has been accused of being racist, along with pickaninnies, minstrels, mammy figures, and other caricatures. The golliwog has been described as "the least known of the major anti-Black caricatures in the United States".[1] In recent years, changing political attitudes with regard to race have reduced the popularity and sales of golliwogs as toys.
@JourneymanGeek wait it isn't fine? Shit.
been a while since I visited here
Hi!
02:55
Hey @BenN!
> In March 2007, Greater Manchester Police seized two golliwogs from a shop after a complaint that the dolls were offensive.[6]
@JourneymanGeek do you live in here?
;p
I see you're quite quoteworthy :P
> On 1 December 2016, Australian Aboriginal activist, author and filmmaker Dr Stephen Hagan caused a national controversy[15] when he labelled Toowoomba the “most racist city in Australia”[16] after a display of nine golliwog dolls were placed by Terry White Chemists underneath a sign[17] inviting shoppers to “Experience a White Christmas”.

@TOWMN fgures it'd be qld and wa. qld was the main state that wanted to have/keep slaves...
@studiohack vaguely.
I've always been quoteworthy tho :p

Blackbirding is the coercion of people through trickery and kidnapping to work as labourers. From the 1860s, blackbirding ships in the Pacific sought workers to mine the guano deposits on the Chincha Islands in Peru. In the 1870s, the blackbirding trade focused on supplying labourers to plantations, particularly the sugar cane plantations of Queensland and Fiji. The first documented practice of a major blackbirding industry for sugar cane labourers occurred between 1842 and 1904. Those "blackbirded" were recruited from the indigenous populations of nearby Pacific islands or northern Queensland...
wtf is a golliwog
@BenN re: https image fix. In the old ones, ca. 2009, I find many with user screen shots that are dead. I've started to mark the Status column with 'User screenshot no longer available' rather than just 'Image no longer available.' My thinking is that for some images it's possible to recreate/substitute others, but for a user's screenshot of the problem/example nothing can be created to replace it. Your thoughts?
@JourneymanGeek Your thoughts too?
@GypsySpellweaver those are complex and need more serious triage.
Pop a comment on Ben's meta question
I have been able to recreate some example screenshots, but "Here's my partition layout" is hopeless.
Which means major edits or closures imo
So leave em first
@JourneymanGeek I've been keeping a local list of ones that are nuke candidates. Basically one-off issues with no future value.
03:09
We can put the new mod on it :p
Just saw a cute little wauzer cross the train line on his/her own
@JourneymanGeek Trial by fire?
@Bob that's what I thought too
The golliwog, golliwogg or golly is a black fictional character created by Florence Kate Upton that appears in children's books in the late 19th century usually depicted as a type of rag doll. It was reproduced, both by commercial and hobby toy-makers as a children's toy called the "golliwog", and had great popularity in the UK and Australia into the 1970s. The doll is characterised by black skin, eyes rimmed in white, clown lips and frizzy hair. Though home-made golliwogs were sometimes female, the golliwog was generally male. For this reason, in the period following World War II, the golliwog...
Https image fix? Huh?
Surely changing images from HTTP to https or vice versa shouldn't make any unavailable
@TOWMN any http images won't load
@GypsySpellweaver and a great chance to learn the tools if they aren't familiar with it.
@TOWMN Dead image links mostly are from temporary versions of imgur.com, not because of protocol change
03:17
@GypsySpellweaver oh
Trust Australia to be the place that's upside down and wrong way round on everything
It worked at the time, but 7½ years later the screenshots are gone. Makes the original question harder to follow, and the answers even worse :(
Trams are more like trains, trains behave more like trams...
3 is the lowest setting, 1 is the highest setting...

@TOWMN Which side of the tap is "hot"?
@GypsySpellweaver the one marked C
Yeah that was the other one I was trying to remember... "H" gives you cold water, "C" gives you hot... :-/
@TOWMN Hope it has red paint, at least?
03:22
It's worse than the Russian reversal.
@GypsySpellweaver Blue goes with C, red goes with H
Even the tub drains the wrong way, right?
4G covers 800km+ rural countryside routes with two trains per week but not the state capital suburbs with two an hour
@TOWMN That one makes sense: Need the 4G out there cause there ain't no wires.
@GypsySpellweaver there's no wires on the train in the suburbs either
@GypsySpellweaver there ain't no people either
The 4G is only on the train, not in the area?
Bob
Bob
03:27
Welcome to Australia! Where the 4G in the area is MIA.
Seen all you pics of towers, thought they were in the open
@JourneymanGeek Comment posted.
Time to stop fixing anyway. Too many pending edits. Got the brakes applied. Need to check-in on other sites as well.
I should check what timezone my flight is in... I'm not making that very expensive mistake again...
@GypsySpellweaver back in the old days Google calendar didn't adjust timezones on the mobile app...
@TOWMN At the price of a flight, not sure I'd trust it now either. Brain power is cheap.
03:40
@GypsySpellweaver heh cost me 3x more for the emergency flight after I missed my first one, then that one ended up four hours late on a 50 minute journey...
Airline still owes me €300 compensation but then they went out of business while the EU were still making up their mind about whether "technical issues" counted as the airlines fault
Hey @Bob, are you an immigrant?
I mean more immigrant than white Australian "natives"
Well if you go back enough even the natives were immigrants, though I guess it wasn't a country at the time humans first settled Oceania
Hmm maybe I should look up what an immigrant is on Wikipedia
this is so incompetant that I'm not sure if its spam ;p superuser.com/questions/1189535/…
@TOWMN am I? I was born here, but culturally I'm quite distinct from locals of the same "race"
and most locals assume I'm not
@JourneymanGeek no
So the native Australians were migrants not immigrants
@JourneymanGeek Can't tell either. Legit Q, but link is wonky <shrug>
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN Ehhh... no? I was born here, lived here all my life. But parents were immigrants.
