i'm going to call him in a little while on my personal mobile rather than as an official company thing
dev to dev
'the 4LA is coming for you, hide!'
@JourneymanGeek I always get doubtful about this stuff
wooooooooooo
now i feel like i can beat work

I've got a question
Is it possible for a pc to have its port locked?
'port locked'??
One of my site has a filezilla server (don't ask why) doing FTP stuff
they had a virus warning issue, which was a false positive
I asked them to unplug the pc from the network
since they replug it
you want to block port 21?
11:28
it seems the port 21 is ok
but the filezilla server is configured to open 2 others ports
block with a firewall
namely the 20 and 990

block with a firewall
11:29
this is the error I have
But I don't want to block it with a FW
well as it says ipv6....
you wondering about the error?
but IPV4
either something is using the port already...
yup @djsmiley2k
or ...?
or.... it doesn't have root privledges
11:31
are there any softwares that can check which port are used and by which programs?
It can't be the second option
as the PC has a root admin
netstat
linux or windows firstly?
windows
7
I think you want something like netstat -b | find '990' but it's been a long time...
sounds like we have a winner
did i remember correctly?
11:39
yes for the netstat -b
11:57
WHAT COULD I SEE? COULD I BELIEVE? THAT WHAT I SAW THAT NIGHT WAS REAL AND NOT JUST FANTASY?!
12:34
The YouTube subtitle system has to be the glitchiest thing I've seen in a loooong time.
Power on -> insert smartcard -> type PIN -> wait wait wait -> Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> click a button -> type PIN -> wait wait wait -> start -> Cisco Anyconnect -> wait -> type PIN -> wait -> hit enter -> wait wait wait wait wait -> network access -> wait wait wait while Outlook/etc. load
FML
oh right
!!unban TOWMN
@JourneymanGeek TOWMN freed from mindjail!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic s/wait/virusscan/ ?
@JourneymanGeek apparently Panda detects that growl to toast thing as a virus :S
0_0
@Bob cause... its something its never seen before?
12:46
@Bob the five "wait"s before network access are that; the other ones are just because it's an HDD
I just can't catch a break - the spacebar on my brand new Logitech keyboard is sticking
also, apparently the U2417H is a very hot item; Amazon.com apparently won't have one in stock until April 2... I think the "17" in the model number indicates it's a 2017 part, or at least late 2016... and there must be a lot of demand for them
no wonder those people scammed me - you literally can't get genuine ones
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I hate those things
"it's new it must be bad"
@allquixotic yea the last two digs are usually year
@allquixotic plausible. My 4Ks are P2715Q and I think they're a 2015 model
@Bob and its fine on Defender
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea I know
well, I actually haven't gotten around to setting up growl on linux
and... how many people still use growl 0_0
@JourneymanGeek you're a dog; certainly you've always used it
Bob

12:55
@JourneymanGeek I have 12 stars and 5 watchers on the github project o.O
yay got a SSD finally.
It's a samsung 850 evo 250 gb
@HackToHell hope you didn't get one of the ones with problems :/ the 850 EVO is an amazing value, but not without its problems
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic wait what problems
@Bob I'm tempted to fork it and call it hiss
@allquixotic oh what kind of problems
I can't run the magician in Linux and that's annoying
13:00
!!Am I unbanned yet
@TOWMN All signs point to no
3
-_-
why were you banned?
mindjailed
" moved the hole just a tiny bit in"
13:02
@Bob Write speed drop-off due to TLC -- although the unpowered data retention issue isn't an actual issue, apparently
@jokerdino what's the difference?
@allquixotic actually - support for growl for windows is terribad
and a fork/rewrite would probably obliviate the need for said plugin ;p
@JourneymanGeek I do this a lot
13:02
@Burgi mindjail is just for the bot; banning means you can't send messages in chat
@Burgi Because the dog overlord was being a dog.
TOWMN was not banned from chat at all (yesterday, at least) but was mindjailed
ah
If it involves the !!ban command I consider it a ban
was this a legacy mindjailing or something more recent?
13:04
Otherwise it'd be called the !!mindjail command
I can rename it !!timeoutpen if you prefer with a 5 second code change
> moved the hole just a tiny bit in
Note to self, be very careful when wiggling holes about in future :-o
There's not even 1mm of clearance around the holes it seems
@allquixotic And I didn't even do anything wrong
Not my fault dogs get too confused to follow chat when AMD beats Intel
This is why cats have superior intellect.
Does my chat profile still say Woof I'm a dog cat?
Oh good it doens't
no one pays attention to the profiles other than you :O
at least mine is consistent between the gravatar, the vocalization, and the animal name
1. A picture of a cat, 2. "Meow", 3. "cat"
Bob apparently doesn't have a chat slogan/profile thingy
Parse error; expected Floof. I'm a fox. on Line 1
@allquixotic code it in python?
13:08
@allquixotic That wasn't always the case fwog!
@TOWMN Wao, you actually remember that? :P
I think the animal dysphoria probably reflects somewhat on my identity disphoria IRL
Either way, Dog is Dead.
@allquixotic Oh yeah read about those issues
Geek's chat slogan should be Hello. I'm a wauzer. because everyone knows wauzers speak English
I have a slogan?
13:18
yeah yours is something about subwoofers
ah. Small dog joke ;p
13:32
huh, my random temp passcode for one of my sites was just five zeroes and a 1
truely random.
hmmmmm 4 letter agency... controls planes.... @Burgi o_O
Huh, I hadn't realised Ryzen also rapes Intel for perf per watt
Despite quite high operating voltages
Hmm
And turning off SMT puts it within a couple percent of the 7700K for gaming too
:O
so what's the general concencus now, Ryzen is nice?
@djsmiley2k Its not terrible ;p
:D
it's not bulldozer?
13:48
@djsmiley2k good value, good for hot ambient temps or limited cooling (like in a very small box with few fans), great for professional workloads like video encoding, more than good enough for gaming, but with two major weaknesses, both of them potentially temporary
(1) apparently a driver or microcode bug causing the chip to far underperform targets in gaming (SMT bug, look it up)
(2) due to low yields, no stock and high demand, it's nearly impossible to get a chip, and if you do, you're way overpaying the MSRP right now
@allquixotic being an early adopter sucks ;p
@djsmiley2k It's very nice, and beats Intel on nearly all fronts if you manually turn off SMT while gaming >:|
Hopefully the SMT issue can be fixed with firmware and software updates, given Intel's HyperThreading had negative performance impacts when it first came out, then over the years this went away as software vendors became aware of and optimized for it
They've had ten years to tune for Intel's HT.
Oh AMD just announced their $169 Ryzen 5 CPUs
Who was it wanting to buy an ancient $150 AMD CPU again?
14:03
@djsmiley2k not us :)
we only deal with the mind control chips
@TOWMN @GypsySpellweaver
@TOWMN that Gypsy guy. does Ryzen 5 have an IGP, or would he still have to buy a discrete GPU?
@allquixotic non APU models still
I think its about a wave or two before the APUs
14:23

@AndyK That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: lod, moo
WHO SUMMONS ME?
@DavidPostill should respond to !!mod too
it's a foregone conclusion
14:45
unless Boba Fett HarryMC runs, but that's unlikely
if he does, I have no idea who will win: the more deserving candidate, or will users blindly vote for rep
@allquixotic I'm doubtful harry would tho
.... Actually, what would his candidate score be?
yeah, he never has in the past, and seems relatively uninterested in moderating the site or participating in meta
@JourneymanGeek time to run that SEDE on him
@allquixotic lol
his score would be 34/40 @JourneymanGeek
@allquixotic that's a bit of a surprise
14:48
14/20 badges, full up on the rest
he has 6 answers and 7 questions on meta though
I think the one thing I have going for me if I ran (which I won't) is my rampant meta participation
been more active on meta than main site since 2014 or so
@allquixotic My whole moderation style relies on meta and chat
but there's no real benefit to giving me a diamond when I can already answer questions on meta without a diamond
every time I think about what I'd do as a mod, it occurs to me that the things I don't like to do would become more important that I do as a mod, and the things I enjoy doing, I can already do, and being a mod wouldn't enable me to do them better or easier
I abhor review queues, flags, dealing with spam, bad questions, etc
@allquixotic on the other hand, I can't handle a bunch of stuff without actually metaing.
lol
@allquixotic I hardly touch the main queues
I prefer to focus on the positive aspects of the site: upvoting good questions, contributing answers, helping marginal questions become good questions, answering metas with long philosophical discussions, etc
and smokey does a number on spam
14:51
The flag queue is a pretty different experience than the review queues
its pretty damned crazy how much spam volume we see has gone down
True
I enjoy processing flags even more than reviewing
@DavidPostill has a ton of reviews, flags, and way more downvotes than upvotes -- he's the ideal janitor... he either enjoys that stuff or is just good at it, or both...
me, I would rather spend half an hour crafting a good answer a few times a week.... again, no need for diamond
14:53
@GypsySpellweaver So, I read the transcript and found this:
9 hours ago, by Gypsy Spellweaver
@allquixotic Competitive isn't so much an issue. If I can compile Apache in less than 15min w/o thermal shut down I'm doing good. If I can have FF open at the same time, even better
Ryzen is exactly what you want.
No reason you can't do both
I wouldn't be a mod if I didn't like the site
and find those things fine
@bwDraco I was very tempted to recommend Ryzen, except for the current price spike (all the parts are selling above MSRP on the open market), difficulty of placing an order that isn't backordered for months, and lack of an IGP; that last part means he needs to buy a space heater GPU unnecessarily... which adds cost and heat dissipation
and heat is already a major issue for his current system design, so I was very reluctant to encourage that, even with a low-end GPU
Hang on to the GT 710.
he doesn't own the 710; it's something he'd have to buy
and if he's buying, I'd say look at Polaris 11, more future-proof for high res displays etc
Ah. RX 460?
14:56
but his budget appears to be around $500 total for the parts he doesn't already own
Yikes.
He'd also need new RAM.
he has a PSU from 2004 (which I believe is ATX 12V, so it'd at least be compatible), an old case, five HDDs (he's not looking to upgrade), and a DVD writer, that he won't be upgrading
@allquixotic the funny part I guess is the parts of moderation I like the most is soft moderation. On the other hand, It feels like I do a lot of it in places where I'm not a mod too.
in my pcpartpicker lists I built for him, I specced out RAM, mobo, and (if I had budget) a new PSU
and a CPU of course
@JourneymanGeek I'm hoping to learn this myself :P
14:57
I still think the i5-7400 is his answer, but he doesn't like Intel
@bwDraco heh, some things scare me. I'm not used to people treating me like the responsible adult ;p
I have lots to do today, though, so I really won't be around much.
@JourneymanGeek I'm sure you'll get used to it
shit, my startSSL client cert is expiring today
Also I just noticed today...
Bit of a spike on main meta. Trying to hit 10K there ;p
@bwDraco in a sense though, its handy not to get used to it
Perspective is handy
@allquixotic Bit of both. I've been doing it because I have the time - but also to keep the site clean.
15:02
how can i get my minion to make me tea?
@Burgi just glare at him
@Burgi if you're not paying him to do that, you can't :P unless he does so out of kindness
looks like I have no reason to renew anything with StartCom
Like that
Make sure to wag your tail slowly
15:06
@JourneymanGeek, I really wish I'm as mature as you are.
Perhaps it's a matter of talent, but I'm sure I'll find a way forward.
@bwDraco I don't think anybody's mature 100% of the time
yup
I've occationally had bad days
I'm usually mature except when I ragequit out of the Sins of a Solar Empire game @Bob and I were playing because we were royally fucked and I was mad :P
hmmm... mysqli_real_escape_string turns booleans to strings...
I'm finally starting to realize that I have a tendency to demand too much from others IRL and this is likely to bring some serious positive change over the next few weeks and months.
15:08
@allquixotic IIRC their certificates are currently useless
or days where I go "I can't mod"
ANd yanno, that's fine
It happens.
@BenN Indeed! I just verified that in Chrome 57. A site whose cert was valid yesterday (that I own) is now invalid :(
@BenN @allquixotic hasn't this been in the works for a while?
Yep
I switched to manually using Let's Encrypt. Not the most convenient, but free and works
15:09
@JourneymanGeek yep, since October, but I thought they'd do something to get Mozilla, Apple, Microsoft and Google to reverse course on un-trusting them
apparently they haven't
I'm 24 and it took me ages to come to the realization that I'm too pushy.
@BenN see, I really can't automate my cert renewal for all the daemons I have that need SSL certs, and I'm not going to pay $100+ USD per year per domain because I have multiple domains and subdomains
I guess the only way to go is up.
I loved having multi-year StartSSL certs that would apply to wildcard, and being able to get more domain certs without paying more money
That was nice :(
15:11
does anyone else offer that?
I'd pay $500 for the privilege and still save money compared to buying individual certs per domain
Maybe DigiCert? Not sure if that's exactly what you're after
this is actually a huge issue for me right now, because I'm hosting a Joomla for a community and it's about to go live
I really wish I had the resources to maintain the sort of server infrastructure you do...
I'm after: pay a flat rate and be able to get as many wildcard domain certs as desired, ideally with a expiry >= 2 years
meaning *.whatever.com, *.whatever2.net, *.oasoekf.va, etc. etc.
then tomorrow I need *.flabberghast.in and it's $0 added cost
Alas, I'm still short on funds and I can't afford a good dedicated server just yet.
15:18
@BenN that's way too expensive per domain, unfortunately
I'd be willing to pay, like, $50 per *.foo.com wildcard cert (for one domain) per year, but no more than that
Yeah, and it doesn't seem to have the add-certs-any-time thing
I'd prefer a flat rate unlimited domains of course, but if I can't get that, I'm looking for the cheapest wildcard certs out there
why the hell is such a basic thing so expensive?
every CA seems to assume I want $50,000 liability insurance and legal indemnification from them
I want a sequence of bits that will make peoples' address bar show a lock icon
That is LITERALLY ALL I CARE ABOUT
oh, and low maintenance (bye, Let's Encrypt)
How many domains are you trying to secure?
I personally use Comodo Positive SSL, purchased through Namecheap.
@allquixotic you can setup Let's Encrypt to auto-refresh
**Today**? Let's see:
Domain #1: the root plus about six or seven subdomains
Domain #2: the root plus three subdomains
Domain #3: the root plus two subdomains
There is no domain #4 yet
wow, I thought this was a bug
Hell with you, Google! -- seriously? why the hell would you intentionally hide this critical info from users?
even IE 11 gets it right ffs
15:30
>_>
@allquixotic wait, you're linking HTG quoting SU on a SU chatroom? ;p
@JourneymanGeek HTG came up in Google before SU :(
I know, I know ;_;
boooooo ;p
debates the cone of shame
this almost looks too good to be true
alphassl.com wants $149 for the same thing
and they're backed by GlobalSign, which is ridiculously expensive
hm kickstarter.com/projects/boboseye/… an iphone case that's an android phone. Whut?
@JourneymanGeek What on earth?
I don't get it, how does that even work?
15:47
Hi, excuse me, who do I approach to find torrents. Besides my local search engine?
@Nick The pirates who live in the bay
user226528
Aren't there any torrent directory or dedicated torrent search engines?
@Nick The guys who kick a**
@Rahul2001 do they exist anymore and even if they do, I don't think they chat much. They're mostly spam.
@FleetCommand Not sure.
@Nick Oh, they exist all right. They're like the only ones law enforcement hasn't been able to take down.
And they still give away some pretty good loot for free
15:49
Say I want a torrent to all the episodes of the Japanese anime K-ON!! in 1080p quality
It's hard to find that exactly but I know some one out there has it.
How do I find my special someone?
@Nick I would consider discussion of finding downloads that intentionally violate copyright law to be off-topic for chat, as a room owner... @JourneymanGeek feel free to weigh in
Did your try the obvious? search for torrent directory
Ofcourse
@Nick Then that is all the help we can give you ...
and now, I'm an editor at DMOZ. Well, that escalated quickly.
15:52
@Nick What did you expect?
user226528
The original quote is "Boy, that escalated quickly".
@DavidPostill I think google omits the best ones. Can someone dig out a torrent agreggator from the underground?
I don't believe we should help with such pursuits here, sorry
@DavidPostill You mean the help you can give me. I'm sure @Rahul2001 has some nasty ideas.
@Nick Someone probably can. We already told you (several times) that you shouldn't be asking here. Please take the hint.
15:55
@Nick Cannot share here, unfortunately :(
@BenN Yeah, me neither. I miss darkweb SE. Too bad it didn't pass beta.
user226528
There was a Dark Web SE?
@DavidPostill hint taken. Crushed into lemon juice. Thanks for the refreshing drink.
bye folks
I'm sorry @AndyK if I upset you.
15:56
if there are individuals here who do want to help you, I suggest you arrange a way to talk to them off the SE network, like Gitter or Snapchat or whatever you prefer
@FleetCommand Deep Web made it to private beta
I believe its Official Reason for failure was a lack of useful original content
we won't object to you sharing contact info in here, and you can delete it after the other person gets it
@Rahul2001 You have my mail. Reach out to me with the details.
@allquixotic Whatever happens, don't call the cops till it's actually time to call the cops.
15:58
@Nick too late; I am the cops
Oh noes... oh wait, that's a good thing.
@allquixotic RED ALERT!!
You're already in my pocket.
I don't have any deposits in my bank account from anyone named Nick...
