pricy tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek but can it run crysis portal?
@Bob depends on what you stuff inside
Does anyone know how to setup a router on a dorm ethernet?
I plugged a ethernet cable from the dorm wall port to the modem port on my router, and now I'm in the router settings from my desktop
hm. eww double nat
But theres no Internet
00:23
@ROODAY start by plugging in a PC and checking what IP address range your dorm uses and whether there's any flavour of captive portal stuff going on
Alright
link unrelated and amusing.
Also, I'm not sure if this is an issue but my desktop also has a WiFi card. The router settings page failed on me when the network icon switched from ethernet to show the wireless networks available
@ROODAY I'd also talk to other people in the drom to see what they did
._. you can't reach the router settings page when not connected to the router.
I wasn't connected to the WiFi networks tho
I was still connected to the router, it's just the icon switched from showing Lan to showing available WiFi
Is there a way to prevent that?
00:31
@ROODAY unplug the router
? I'm trying to connect to it though
@ROODAY follow @JourneymanGeek advice and use the PC, by wire, to dorm network first for network info. You will need that when you power up and try to setup the router.
Do I use ipconfig to find the Ip range?
Yup. If you're going to double Nat you want a different, non overlapping range
@JourneymanGeek Probably best to go with a different class as well. Dorm probably either class A or C, so maybe setup using class B network.
00:37
Ok, this seems to be the relevant information: pastebin.com/C232Et33
The problem I have now is I can't get into the router
It's a belkin me1004r, I know the Ip is 192.168.2.1, but it's not connecting
Keeps saying it took too long
Set a static IP on your computer
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, if you're doing double-NAT then you'd want to keep the DHCP server running
only turn it off if you're not routing (i.e. switch mode)
00:48
@JourneymanGeek @ROODAY since the support page says routers and wireless access points aren't allowed, I'm backing out.
@Bob that is the idea, yes
@GypsySpellweaver Yea, was about to mention this.
@MichaelFrank I suppose using the router as a switch might be okay, but I'd not want to bet my classes on it.
reddit.com/r/BostonU/comments/2lsuyk/… also suggests you may need to let them know the mac address
Yeah I saw that, the problem with that is that the device in question needs to be generating traffic
00:50
@GypsySpellweaver well, a proper cheap dumb switch is like what... 20 quid?
Not sure what that means. I tried registering the mac adddress but it gave me the generating traffic error
@GypsySpellweaver the IT services won't crack down too hard, the worst theyll do is confiscate the router which is a cheap old one anyways
My goal is just to have my devices like chromecast connect to the router and communicate because right now I use the wifi card on my desktop as an access point
The problem with that is that my desktop has to stay on all the time
@ROODAY Switch at amazon for $25, gigbit too.
@GypsySpellweaver I need the wifi capabilities tho for my other devices
Worst case scenario I bring my raspberry pi from home and set it up as an access point but id rather just use this router
@ROODAY hence my suggestion of turning off DHCP and using your router in "AP mode"
@ROODAY Dorm should be hot anyway.
00:53
@JourneymanGeek I still can't get into my router for some reason
It says that 192.168.2.1 is unreachable
@ROODAY factory reset?
Did that before plugging in anything
@ROODAY PC is now on the 168.... net, and has no gateway to the 192.... network.
168.122.136.210 as an ip address looks wrong too
@JourneymanGeek Valid IP for BU residence network
00:54
@GypsySpellweaver that info in the pastebin was the output when I was plugged directly into the BU network, to get the information you said I needed
Right now, the local area connection info in ipconfig looks ok, except the value for default gateway is missing
that might be the issue
@ROODAY can you plug your pc into a router and give us the ip config information there?
you can hardcode that, in theory
actually, as @MichaelFrank said, try setting things statically with a sane set of default
Thats by going into the network adapter -> tcp/ip -> properties, etc?
00:57
@ROODAY step 1: plug PC into router.. Make it dumb switch. step 2: plug router into wall. probably work I _think.
ah, so disconnect from wall first
alright will try
Not sure what that'll do to wifi though. Shouldn't all the wifi gear work off the dorm's wifi?
I was hoping the router could do what my desktop was doing, i.e. receive connection over ethernet and access as a wireless AP for other devices
I could do that with a raspberry pi since I'd have more control but the router is all I have on me at the moment, and I've heard of others setting up routers in the past
however no one I know is aware of the specifics
@ROODAY I've managed to do that with a few routers
but its really router specific
01:01
Mine is the basic belkin me1004r
Says "my essentials" on the side
Im just confused right now as to why I was able to access the router settings page earlier but then it just stopped
@ROODAY We can't walk you through it if you can't get in
Yeah
(and heh, I've been toying with replacing my main router with a pfsense box)
Ok so windows network diagnostics says local area connection doesnt have a valid ip config
Im not sure how to set that manually/what values to put
01:03
that's not a good sign
and why I suggested a full factory reset
I did that before starting this whole process tho, would something have changed just by connecting some ethernet ports?
@Bob
Hi
No, but I'd do it again if I can't get in
@ROODAY Do a factory reset on the router, then connect, by wire, to the PC, no wall at all. In Windows click on Repair Then try to follow instruction at link above.
Repair?
01:05
@GypsySpellweaver keyboard tags don't work on chat for some reason
!!!!!
ah
Ok so I think I realized something
I just did the factory reset again
Now the ethernet icon in the taskbar went from unidentified network to network 3
yes! im in the router settings
Ok I just changed the SSID and am letting it restart now just so I can identify the wifi later
What should I do to set it up as the bridge?
Well Factory Reset turns DHCP back on, so of course you'd get back in. :P
ah
Do i just follow the guide Gypsy put in from this point out?
Ok, so I clicked the use as AP button
It asks for an ip and subnetmask
This is where the info you wanted me to get earlier comes in, @JourneymanGeek ?
hm? Should be dynamic in theory
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN hi
01:13
The guide that Gypsy linked is Belkin specific, there exists a button in the settings to use the router as an AP, but it requires I specify an IP and subnetmask
@JourneymanGeek It'll be asking for the gateway address probably.
Should I feed it the ip and subnet of my desktop that was connected?
That sound's like it's going to only be an AP for wireless and ignore ethernet totally.
@GypsySpellweaver yea, that's what I'm thinking.
Me thinks we is on the wrong road....
01:14
Isn't that what I want? Ideally once I have the router set up ill plug the desktop back into the wall directly (theres 2 ports)
I just want the router to provide wifi for my other devices
That router may not do "dumb switch mode"
@GypsySpellweaver AP mode typically acts as a switch too
did with with my asus until my dlink inevitably started acting up
Won't the LAN port in the dorm have an assigned IP address?
I've even done switch mode with a cable modem/router combo unit. But each one is different.
@MichaelFrank I can check that right now. I plugged my laptop into the port the desktop was, if the ip it gives is the same then I can conclude its the same for that port
01:17
@ROODAY No you cannot! Could be lease from DHCP
AH
Regardless, its a different ip
So what ip should I give it in the use as access point feature?
It looks like it will disable dhcp in doing so
That'd be a pretty shitty/lucky DHCP assignment if his desktop and laptop where both handed the same IP from the DHCP server.
The IP it wants is for the wifi, not the eth
Bob
Bob
> The price of the SDK support plan is 10000 USD
"let's just pick a high price"
@Bob What's my cut?
01:19
@JourneymanGeek What should I do from here? The Belkin guide has two options, the use as AP button or setting everything manually and turning off DHCP
@ROODAY AP button should be simpler.
@ROODAY I think you should be using the IP address from the pastebin, as that's in the correct range for the main dorm router. Feed that into the AP mode setup, and see where it gets you.
@MichaelFrank sounds good, will try
Worst case scenario is it doesn't work and you have to factory reset again.
But really, try it, and if it dosen't work, factory reset ;p
01:21
Worst worst case scenario, IT comes aknockin' and confiscates your router.
True
Or, if you happen to have a bottle of whiskey they might just set it up for you.
@MichaelFrank Too true \o/
Lol
Hmm, so after doing that and plugging it into the wall, my computer said ip address conflict, so it looks like it does assign one ip per device
Ill try resetting and trying with a number higher ip
For those who tuned in yesterday to the wailin 'o the banshee ('clyp' link)-
01:24
@bertieb Yess....?
There were some good guesses, but the actual culprit was (is) a dodgy monitor transformer-- turns out it varies with the displayed image.
Ghetto Chat Markdown why
@MichaelFrank are you planning to keep your nomination up? ;p
Yea, chat always cuts off a closing bracket attached to a URL.
@JourneymanGeek If it disappears I won't complain.
naw, you'd need to do it yourself
wtf
uhh
so
01:26
also, for gits and shingles.... AIbobot has a candidate score of 3.
I plugged the wall to a normal port on the router (not modem). Plugged the computer to another normal port. Then reset the router and restarted my computer
Internet is now working on the computer
not sure why tho
ah!
I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT HKKHGFHKEGFJHEGEJHGJHGE
@MichaelFrank Or short leases. Or port based assignment. Lots of "dorm" systems use ... stupid broken designs

A: How do I use a wireless router as a switch? (even WiFi access)

Journeyman GeekDo not connect the ethernet cable from the tp link to the wan port on the netgear router. connect together regular lan ports on both.

So the blips and beeps at the start were a reboot, causing a changing display on the monitor. Whiter pages cause more interference, presumably due to different patterns or just moar powa.
01:28
D'oh
That was so painless lol
Oh yea, don't use WAN lol
And the wifi works too!
I'll just do a bit more testing but it looks like everything is good
Thanks guys!
@ROODAY for that matter, I should have linked that ;p
So the terrible banshee interference problem was solved by the highly technical solution of moving the transformer slightly further away.
@bertieb amusingly...
01:29
It's fine, i shouldve realized anyways, its what I had to do when bridging another router at home
Thanks again everyone!
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek which makes the 0/40 nominations sound oh so much sadder
@bertieb do you have foil tape handy? :P
I once fixed my homeplug connection by moving it cause the washing machine interfered
What confused me was I was having electrical work done here at the time (another circuit added to the "let's put everything on this"-overloaded ring main) when the interference appeared, so I was confused as to cause
@Bob I don't think I've ever actually used foil tape (googles-- nope)
@JourneymanGeek Was the worst nomination from the Recycling Bin?
naw
guy who used a camgirl as a gravatar and his nomination was "Vote for me, I am cute"
Bob
Bob
01:32
@JourneymanGeek there's something with you and washing machines :P
My original nomination was the second worst
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek is the nom still up?
I initially blamed electrics as 1) recent work and 2) electrics are a bit dodgy- I previously found out that disconnecting one half of a light switch in the living room caused the boiler (in the kitchen) to turn off
I literally phoned it in
@Bob alas, no
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek was it user-deleted? :P
01:33
@Bob Oh?
I don't know where any of those places are. But Wikitravel said there was a beach so I went to it
Lazy sharks not swimming round this way
@Bob I believe so
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN SA isn't really known for its beaches :P
Probably some decent ones, idk
The popular touristy ones are over in Queensland, maybe upper NSW. Then of course the ones in major state capitals.
Why is South Australia hundreds of miles north of Main Australia anyway
Bob
Bob
@bertieb wtf
oh, that reminds me
@Bob But Adelaide is a state capital!
And it's like, the size of the third biggest city in the UK
01:36
@Bob Previous chap who lived here was a sparks... things could be a lot worse :P
Clearly the map is upside down
Bob
Bob
@bertieb uh. licensed?
I think I previously mentioned power for my garage sockets was literally obtained via hallway plug (so I could unplug my garage, which is... a feature not a bug?)
@Bob He probably was, but working on his own home he probably didn't have to follow any pesky things like codes or regulations :P
Oh Ben B is running
01:38
er Ben N
And so's that other guy I dislike
Bob
Bob
@bertieb o.O
Hmm
Does this moderator thing happen every year?
No
It happens as necessary
Why do I feel grumpier about it this time round
Who got elected last time?
@Bob Wtf
01:40
Either we go "Hey CM - We need more mods" or a mod quits and a CM asks "do you need more mods"
@TOWMN me and @Mokubai
That video reminds me of the 'magic' and 'more magic' story
troggy retired. We didn't have a election when slhck retired.
Bob
Bob
@bertieb Ah, that one's a classic.
slhck retired?!
yup

Q: Goodbye Mod team, I'm a mere mortal again

slhckFirst, the tl;dr: Starting today, I am no longer a community moderator on Super User. Over the past weeks, I've made the decision to step down as a moderator. I was elected on July 24, 2012, and it's been a bit more than three years that I've been part of an awesome moderator team. Countless fla...

01:42
@Bob That's absolutely amazing.
Fair enough, can relate to time pressures (disappears for another 18 months)
That building with 5 antennas per sector and space for 3 more I photographed?
At least 3 of them are fake
@JourneymanGeek So the most active mod in here is also the newest? Where the hell is everyone else from before
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN o.O
@TOWMN around
@Bob Yeah
Bob
Bob
01:44
@TOWMN "in here" => not all mods are active in chat
Well not actually fake
Bob
Bob
@random is fairly active
I got a photo of round the back, just a plug and ~10cm of black cable that's been cut off dangling out the bottom
But it's the first time outside of America where I've seen them basically give up on "sectors" and just put up a whole row along the entire side of the building...
But it kinda makes sense if some of them are so old and crap they only have one input (modern ones have as many as 8 or 10)
Bob
Bob
idk what a sector is...
@TOWMN there's (least in theory) a process for replacing inactive mods. It hasn't been triggered yet
And not all mods do chat
01:47
A sector antenna is a type of directional microwave antenna with a sector-shaped radiation pattern. The word "sector" is used in the geometric sense; some portion of the circumference of a circle measured in degrees of arc. 60°, 90° and 120° designs are typical, often with a few degrees 'extra' to ensure overlap and mounted in multiples when wider or full-circle coverage is required (see photos below). The largest use of these antennas is as antennas for cell phone base-station sites. They are also used for other types of mobile communications, for example in WiFi networks. They are used for limited...
j/k
Basically most mobile stations are divided into 3x120 degree "sectors"
Hence triangles
and indirectly, one of the things that probably helped me get elected is I'm kinda noticable on the internet ;p
@Bob Top comment...
> She's a fan of light entertainment.
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN oh
Triangles everywhere
Even on google.com.au most of the search results for "Mobile mast" seem to be examples of UK ones
Then again I am logged in my Google account
They be almost always sets of 3 even when it should be 4
Bob

Triangles, what triangles?
I've never actually seen a >3 sector mast even though they should exist in so many places
@Bob Still a triange
Bob
Bob
D:
Oddly shaped one but nonetheless it's 3 sectors when you really should expect 4 on a 4 sided building...
Hey guys, I have internet access through the router but devices like my google home can't connect. I suspect that since the router is a bridge to the campus network, it expects login information which is probably already saved on my phone (which would explain why my phone gets internet through the router wifi)
Notice there's none on the bottom
Bob
Bob
01:52
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE
Updating my phone (again)...
They do the same with 4 sided church towers, and leave one side empty :-/
Is there a way for the router to just give internet access but have it act as the traffic for the router (at least from the pov of the campus network?)
@ROODAY double nat
;p
but that didn't work
The problem with that I think was registering the mac address
01:54
Or maybe there are aand I just can't see them. But that would be a first, out of literally hundreds I've checked
(Then again everything's the wrong way round in Oz so)
I was never able to because it kept complaining that the device wasnt generating traffic
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN ah
@TOWMN I see 3 shadows along the bottom :P
can't find a better angle of it though
Once i saw a 4 sided church tower with three sectors, and one set of fake ones to make the empty side not empty
@JourneymanGeek I guess there's nothing I can do except wait till I can bring my raspberry pi from home and set that up :(
@Bob Yeah, not sure where they're coming from, could be the left side ones
It's odd the numbering system usually allows 6-10 but I've literally never seen a single >3 sector site. Ever.
Which is stupid
Everyone is stupid
(name of festival show I saw last night)
Wow in Oz you have to go through six steps of "Next" to skip over $500 of shitty extras to order a $5 pizza
Then again, $5 pizza they must be making a loss on that, it costs $5 for a small bottle of Fanta
Bob
Bob
01:58
@TOWMN or just click the payment tab...
the next button is a lie :P

> with new bands coming available perhaps that’s what Optus has been holding off for. New bands would include 4G900, 4G1800 rural, 4G3500 metro but also, I think we will see more 4G2100 deployed as well
... ... ... 4G3500?!
@Bob Oh :-|
TIL.
Bob
Bob
> Optus also recently added their first 4G3500 tower to its network in preparation for their “LTE-advanced pro” or LTE-A enabled network. This is a stepping stone technology on the way to 5G, offering speeds above 1Gbps which Optus is calling 4.5G, and will eventually reach 70% of metropolitan areas in the next 12 months.
Well once again Bob enlightens me

damn. wonder what phones'll support 3500 MHz
