I plugged a ethernet cable from the dorm wall port to the modem port on my router, and now I'm in the router settings from my desktop

My goal is just to have my devices like chromecast connect to the router and communicate because right now I use the wifi card on my desktop as an access point

The problem with that is that my desktop has to stay on all the time

I was hoping the router could do what my desktop was doing, i.e. receive connection over ethernet and access as a wireless AP for other devices

I could do that with a raspberry pi since I'd have more control but the router is all I have on me at the moment, and I've heard of others setting up routers in the past

however no one I know is aware of the specifics

Now the ethernet icon in the taskbar went from unidentified network to network 3

Ok I just changed the SSID and am letting it restart now just so I can identify the wifi later

Well Factory Reset turns DHCP back on, so of course you'd get back in. :P

The guide that Gypsy linked is Belkin specific, there exists a button in the settings to use the router as an AP, but it requires I specify an IP and subnetmask

I plugged the wall to a normal port on the router (not modem). Plugged the computer to another normal port. Then reset the router and restarted my computer

I suspect that since the router is a bridge to the campus network, it expects login information which is probably already saved on my phone (which would explain why my phone gets internet through the router wifi)
