@Bob LMAO
ugh, I am so sick of FGITW... remind me why I try again :P
lol
@allquixotic early bird gets the worm. Second mouse gets the cheese.
and I often go for questions with weaker earlier answers since my answers look better next to them ;p
Anyone knows how is SK Humid SSD in comparison to Samsung EVO 850?
Dang auto-correct. It's SK Hynix.
Bob
Bob
a humid SSD would probably fail pretty quick
@TOWMN I just tested Optus at 2/3 and then 130/28 by walking 40m -_-
08:25
@Bob Heh
I did the same without walking. By switching bands :-P
@Boris_yo Humid SSD is bad

Q: Win 10 inaccessible, stuck in 1920x1080 144Hz

SubravaI have one installation of Windows 10 which I set at 144Hz because I have an AOC G2460 monitor and a GTX970. However, the DisplayPort cable I used has apparently given up the ghost, so whenever I try to get in all the monitor shows is a black screen. I have an older Win 7 installation on a hard d...

interesting question, W10 seems to have changed the registry location of the screen res stuff, or moved it out of the registry entirely
@allquixotic hmm.force it to safemode somehow?
Hellllllooooooooooooo!!
08:41
@JourneymanGeek I was thinking add ChangeScreenResolution.exe to startup items :P
@allquixotic There's a nircmd utility which you can put in startup
but then I was thinking that would fail because W10 wouldn't trust the exe
Make a batch file to change the res
it'd prompt if you trust the exe because it's never been run on the system before
designed to kinda prevent that sort of hackery
Bob
Bob
08:43
@allquixotic ...no it won't
it'd only prompt you if it has the just-downloaded ADS attached (which you can remove trivially, and is only really attached for browser downloads)
or if you have that smartscreen bs enabled, maybe. that one's just ridiculous
And that's only one operator
Did someone withdraw already?
Ah, it was that person from that site.
@TOWMN are you back to photographing cell towers?
do you photograph all of them or just interesting/unusual ones?
08:55
Hm... How many mods get elected?
@Burgi yea. And this one is especially for you
talk me through it
My phone cam resolution is too low for me to figure out what that is anyway but there's a heck of a lot of LTE RRUs
did you lose all the ones from italy/thailand or something?
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN it's too dark out to get the local one (think it was Telstra?) but I'll see if I can find it on streetview :P
08:59
@Bob the one above is Telstra too. In fact most of the ones I've seen today seem to be Telstra
The pen test has begun
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN ^
^ @TOWMN on a park bench taking pictures of LTE RRUs
lol
Bob
Bob
OzTowers thinks that's a Telstra one:
>
Telstra 2G 900MHz
Telstra 3G 850MHz
Telstra 3G 2100MHz Activated 05-May-2016
Telstra 4G 700MHz Activated 27-Jun-2016
Telstra 4G 1800MHz
09:03
they are piledriving on the building site next to the office
everything is shaking
Can you not put a batch file in the startup folder? Does it have to be a shortcut to it?
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN ^ and that's the nearest one with Optus (and Vodafone and Telstra)
o.O there's one in the other direction, on a light pole...
> (Optus 2G 900MHz) Proposed 03-Dec-2004
but yea, Telstra's everywhere
@allquixotic I wrote an answer, but don't have a PC to test it on: superuser.com/a/1188502/432540
@Rahul2001 don't you need to log in?
@JourneymanGeek Oh. Yeah. But I guess you could just use this sequence: <spacebar> - [username] - <tab> - [password] - <enter>
My solution works if there's no password though :P
This is very crappy hack, but it should work, hopefully
Bob
Bob
09:19
@JourneymanGeek system startup reg key does not require user login
@Bob But... my solution uses nircmd, and I don't think the batch file will be run till the user logs in
Bob
Bob
> RunServices and RunServicesOnce are run in the background when the logon dialog box first appears or at this stage of the boot process if there is no logon. These keys are for background services such as remote registry service and are run only once per boot.
If you do it properly, you don't need to depend on login.
If you depend on login, you've done it wrong.
@Bob Eh, not sure, I need to test it once
@Bob It looks like the upcoming Sins 1.87, when it's out, shouldn't require mod overhauls like many past patches have, it will just make the game faster and smoother like we experienced (modulo some connectivity issues)
that means we could play Interregnum and not have it go OOM :D
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic lol
I kinda want to sort out the normal game so I die less before worrying about Interregnum :(
09:26
I don't really have a secret; my whole strategy is, early game, spam the crap out of the early game attack frigates and the most durable capital ship (ideally get 2 of them right away), as a mobile defense fleet and to push back enemy attempts to take planets near my homeworld
then get starbases ASAP and keep upgrading their defenses and trade ports
but that's very much a TEC strategy
dunno about Advent dude
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Yea, I think I can hold out as TEC, but Advent is ... weird
I basically relied on spamming strike craft, which works really well against Vasari and decently against TEC
It fails miserably against opposing Advent...
honestly I'd rather fight Darth Vader than the Coronata Titan; we should play TEC vs. Empire
Bob
Bob
lol
there's something very weird about that one
I remember when we had those 3v3s with @JourneymanGeek... it was usually just a single Coronata left
every other titan would go down
But that one had some crazy regen and shielding (?)
I think it might be very powerfully buffed by its support ships or capital ships somehow
Bob
Bob
> Suppression Aura is a passive ability that decreases the damage output and maximum speed of enemy vessels in range. This ability is very powerful, especially when fully ugpraded, as it can allow the Coronata to slow retreating fleets, allowing friendly ships to overtake them, which is particularly effective if used in combination with the Iconus Guardian's Repulsion ability, which can allow a skilled player to keep a fleet in a gravity well indefinitely.
that's what kept screwing us
oh FFS
that Repulsion threw my strike craft so far away on every attack run
Oh my.
@allquixotic It apparently gets a large damage buff from nearby friendlies:
> Unity Mass is an active ability whereby the Coronata focuses the Unity's wrath into a beam of hatred, targeting structures, starbases, capital ships and titans. This ability gains a stacking bonus to damage depending on how many friendly ships are nearby, up to a certain target cap
09:31
@Bob apparently, the way to instantly pop any Advent ship (including the Coronata Titan) is to spam Vasari Phase Missiles, because they bypass shields
and Coronata can't do much if you're killing its hull directly
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Funny that. Because the way to quickly wipe out a Vasari fleet is to spam bombers, because they have shit for all anti-strike.
> Damage: 2500 -> 3500 -> 4500 -> 5500
Damage per friendly nearby target: 50 -> 55 -> 60 -> 65
That's ridiculous.
And explains why my titan and cap ships kept dying.
> Level 4 50 x 65 = 3250 + 5500 = 8750 : 25 = 350 DPS
TEC fleets are a little tankier, which is why I was able to keep my fleet alive long enough to kill their Coronata in direct confrontation (despite losing 3 capships and a ton of kodiaks)
the Dunovs gave me the longevity needed, and the Kodiaks and Marzas, the DPS
Bob
Bob
> meaning that Unity Mass is better able to retain a consistent level of damage in a pitched battle than the Ragnarov's snipe ability, due to the extra damage partially making up for shield mitigation and armor
single highest DPS in the game maybe?
ow.
maybe if we just don't play against any Coronata Advent we'd be ok :P
Bob
Bob
*shrug* dunno
that feels like cheating :P
09:34
if we play against TEC we'd have a harder time advancing against the enemy but they would have a harder time attacking us
Bob
Bob
I actually wouldn't mind playing against TEC
We'd just have to upgrade emergency facilities a bit
except... their superweapons would kill our planets so we'd need that starbase module that prevents bombardment taking over a planet
Bob
Bob
not like we depend much on planet income anyway
and planetary shields
Bob
Bob
hm. maybe just try fully random next time and see what they get :P
09:35
@Bob 2 Coronata Advents
Bob
Bob
:(
Murphy's Law
@Bob oh, we should try Age of Empires II HD sometime also, it's been enormously revamped for modern systems, supports ultrawide res, Steam matchmaking, awesome netcode, etc
and a much faster paced game, we can finish it in one sitting
instead of like 3 nights
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic o.O
I've actually never properly played AoE
got in a bit before dropping it
played through AoM quite a few times though :)
Does AoE do multiplayer campaign anyway?
09:38
a game that came out after AoE II based on the same engine, Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, hasn't been forward ported to modern systems, and the difference is striking
@Bob campaign? dunno, not sure, probably not though
Bob
Bob
ah
I remember playing AoM skirmishes against the AI
the AI was ... poor :P
I still love Rise of Nations, going from stone age to information age as a single contiguous civilization
Bob
Bob
Either it does nothing, or it builds a huge army and wipes it out when you've barely started (if you set difficulty high enough)
@allquixotic That sounds like Age of War :P
if you're good, you can out-tech the enemy and have, like, stealth bombers against their hot air balloons
aircraft carriers vs. triremes
09:39
battle tanks vs. cavalry
> Oh no! We could not detect that Flash was enabled for your browser. This game requires Adobe Flash to play, so please install or enable it if you wish to play.
die, Flash, die
Bob
Bob
2003 game
I wonder if it can even run :P
@allquixotic It's ... a flash game
Quite a good one actually
@Bob huh; Rise of Nations is a 2003 game too
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I meant Rise of Nations was 2003 (from looking it up) :P
Age or War was 2008
@Bob I played it in January of this year, so yes
Bob
Bob
The peak of in-browser flash games :(
Those were some good, time-wasting years :P
09:41
I think the limit of Rise of Nations' screen res is either... 1600x1200 (DX8?) or 1920x1080
it definitely can't do 3440x1440
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Lots of older games have issues with higher resolutions
Or just weird resolutions
can't remember if it was AoM or RA2 but one would barf on 1366x768, and I remember issues with DirectDraw on Intel iGPUs
3840x2160 would probably kill it :P
the oldest games would only support 4:3, then the next gen of late-era WinXP (SP2/SP3, Vista RTM days) would support 16:9 but not any res, and often had a limit around 1080p
Lol.
even some 2012-ish games still don't properly support 3440x1440
09:43
@TOWMN your paws look odd
3 hours on the bus, 21 hours on the plane and 10 hours on the train to get from Edinburgh to Adelaide. And the first thing I do? Buy a ticket to the best of the Edinburgh fest show :-/
hey folks
@TOWMN I thought you were out of money?
To see something I probably saw back at home six months ago anyway. Derp.
@allquixotic but I'm not out of credit cards!
09:45
Actually Amex just increased my limit by £4k
No idea why
Bob
Bob
@TOWMN oh, you did end up going to Adelaide? lol
@FleetCommand FWIW, that patent nonsense question was probably... I donno, in some language I don't read
@Burgi clearly they're a polydactyl cat.
10:02
@JourneymanGeek singlish?
user226528
10:14
@JourneymanGeek Are you talking the question for which I retracted my tag? I did use Google Translate on it. But after reflecting on it, I realized that it might have been a poorly written programming question.
user226528
I realized that after clicking the edit button by accident.
non-english questions should be flagged as mod intervention and closed
user226528
@Burgi That is exactly what I did. Except, in the explanation, I wrote "patent nonsense".
Yup and mentioned it in chat
ah! i misunderstood and thought you were talking about patents! lol :)
user226528
10:20
Wikipedia writers and editors contribute a lot of brilliant prose, but occasionally some patent nonsense. This falls into two categories: Total nonsense, i.e., text or random characters that have no meaning at all, such as a passage of lorem ipsum text. This would include strings of characters produced by random banging on the keyboard. Content that, while apparently intended to mean something, is so confusing that no reasonable person can be expected to make any sense of it. See word salad. If the meaning cannot be identified, it is impossible to accurately copy-edit the text. == Not to be... ==
user226528
This part of the text: "Content that, while apparently intended to mean something, is so confusing that no reasonable person can be expected to make any sense of it."
yes i realise that now
user226528

Just disinfected a computer. There is a mystery that I can never solve: When I went to university, I never saw a boy whose laptop was infected. I saw infected computers caused by boys, but never a personal laptop owned by a boy. Not only I thought that was impossible, I thought boys were conspiring never to let me see such an infection.
what about the girls? did they not have infections or just freely shared them in the spirit of transparency?
user226528
Oh, virus party!
user226528
There was once this girl who was persuaded by social engineering to uninstall her antivirus and install a virus. She never stopped giggling, which annoyed me to no end...
user226528
I overcharged her for repairs though.
user226528
And she knows it.
user226528
10:55
Serves her right.
was she drunk or high or both?
user226528
Regrettably, neither.
just stupid?
user226528
Very stupid... and I think... turned on by me.
forgive my scepticism

a question about log rotation, would it be better suited for SU or SF?
user226528
No idea
user226528
"Log" is considered software, so I guess SU takes it.
user226528
Unless there is something explicitly server about it...
user226528
11:27
Is it?
yes
but SF is super grumpy
log rotation.... is fun
i'm wondering what the question is
user226528
Try asking it here first. We'll give you an opinion of where.
morning
Where's DragonLord?
Funny how someone who should be a dragon slayer specializes in SSD... Reality is stranger than fiction.
11:35
asleep
In his layer probably...
At Garrotte Gorge.
How do I set up log rotation for PHP in IIS8? @FleetCommand @djsmiley2k
our current error log is 500MB
this is the closest question but has no solution and appears to be platform agnostic serverfault.com/questions/11892/…
user226528
Well, since there isn't really anything strictly "managing information technology systems in a business environment" in it, post it on SU, especially if you think SF is grumpy.
@Burgi would probably actually belong on SF
thanks boss!
11:45
tho. PHP... IIS....
was this something that your predesessor crapped out?
@JourneymanGeek inherited environment, yes :(
elections.stackexchange.com/#superuser is up. All your election related statistics in one shiny place.

@DavidPostill have you only ever asked 1 question?
Well, its slightly broken, but it actually kinda works
@Bob why lol? It was in my plan all along
Well as soon as I heard of the Adelaide Fringe anyway, after I'd been in Melbs for a few days
11:58
@Burgi Yes, on main. Several on meta.
@DavidPostill trying to be the Jon Skeet of SU, eh ;p
user226528
@JourneymanGeek Who's John Skeet?
@FleetCommand low budget, flawed clone of Jon Skeet
there's a reason we have shog9, and not shogs 1-8 as a CM
Bob
Bob
John Skeetâ„¢: now with extra h!
12:03
@FleetCommand Are you serious?
user226528
@DavidPostill Serious about what?
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill he is not ready to join the true believers!
he is lord high supreme commander
think of chuck norris but with a keyboard
Jon Skeet is the highest rep user ever on the SE network. He's so far in front that it is impossible to overtake him.
> Jon Skeet can recite π. Backwards
is that pi?
user226528
933k? Is that... is that real?
@FleetCommand NYET!
@FleetCommand Yup
user226528
12:11
Holy Molly...
user226528
How did this guy make it there? With a time machine?
he invented SO
He basically grinds out great answers with ridiculous consistancy, and has been around pretty much from the early days I think
user226528
Huh? I thought JS invented SO.
lol
JS = Jon Skeet?
12:13
lol
user226528
I meant Joel Spolsky.
user226528
But yeah. Fun coincident.
Tis a joke!

Q: It's over... Jon Skeet has 1008K rep and 7 bronze badges

blehJon Skeet hit 1M total rep network wide. And apparently has 7 bronze badges. Something has to be done.

they have the same initials... coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Skeet's like the chuck norris of SE ;p

thanks @bob!

Bob
not really much info there, but that same quote is repeated in a few places
Oh, here's the original source
Comments disagree *shrug*
lol. I just went to flag a spam post on su, only to find I had autoflagged it and it was already deleted in < 20s :)
lol
@DavidPostill blaaaame smoookeeyyy ;p
12:24
I think 99% of spam gets handled before I get anywhere near it
@JourneymanGeek Makes it harder for you to have fun nuking users, right? Or do you still get mod notified about the deleted spam?
Nope ;p
I miss quite a few
but shrug
@JourneymanGeek Here they are if you get bored :)
I just take a bite out of the review queues
Not as big a bite as you it seems tho
Smokey takes all the fun out of nuking spam...
@JourneymanGeek this i don't understand
@Burgi >_>
I could tell you, but then I'd need to kill you
(Actually no one knows why its a 9 as far as I know ;p)
is the 9 a second g like in snoop dogg?
@JourneymanGeek Mod close votes are binding, right? What would you do if you weren't 100% sure if something should be closed?
Comment and leave to the community?
12:44
@DavidPostill throw it in here ;)
Typically though, if you arn't sure, its fine to leave it for a bit. The community or other mods can deak with it
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Or use a sockpuppet robot dog? :P
i prefer the pistols at dawn solution @Mokubai has suggested
@Burgi aibo shouldn't have enough reputation to VTC
ping ping ping all for the other B's!
@DavidPostill your votes are binding so you should generally be certain, nothing wrong with waiting for another 4 community members and being the 5th which is roughly a "normal" vote

What happens if I allow?
if you click on an email link, a new message will open in gmail
@Bob Is this joker?
It opens email links? Probably mailto: links...
12:53

I am still on Windows Live Mail... in addition to Gmail.
Ewwww.
I though WLM had been burried

@JourneymanGeek @Mokubai Thanks for the words of wisdom.

@Burgi Seeing SW through the eyes of an 8 year old is interesting
@DavidPostill basically you should never really feel that you absolutely must do something. If you need to and can then it's all good and cool, but must is not really your job IMO.
@DavidPostill if you do get elected then you might want to revoke your smokey autoflag ability, they will be binding.
13:14
@Mokubai I think that is taken care of automagically - but of course I will double check :)
If they only apply to foreign sites for mods then fine, i don't know smokey that well... I just check occasionally for spam on SU.
Yep, confirmed by ArtOfCode. It's automagic.
No worries then
4 hours ago, by Rahul2001
Hm... How many mods get elected?
There can be only one
13:19
:(
We can vote for multiple though?
@BenN like highlander
@Rahul2001 That's correct. Voters rank their top three choices
Ah, yes, I remember now :P
No bad hair day as well. It's a plus.
@BenN sadly. Hard to choose.
13:25
I think two mod slots would have made choosing a little bit easier.
2
@BenN Though if you attack @DavidPostill with a broadsword.... ;)
thought a few others would run as well though.
6 more days.
But that 1 slot is kinda discouraging I guess.
13:43
@fixer1234 should stand
Is that pgeek?
What happened to psychogeek (sp)?
@Bob: I wonder if Optus performance is so flakey because they're erroneously trying to use 256QAM on B40
Either way they kinda suck in Adelaide CBD. >600Mbps of spectrum, >300Mbps allocated to handset, <30Mbps delivery.
Oh and found a way to do infinite speedtests without using data. Spotify is zero rated...
@jokerdino he was talking about putting his PC in his RV and it had brickdust or something in it
13:55
@Rahul2001 You vote 3 in order of preference
Since there's only one opening, if your favourite candidate has no hope of winning, the votes get transferred to candidate number 2.
and so on.
If there's more than 1 opening - the votes for winning candidates goes the same way
take a look at CGP Grey's video on the single transferable vote
Or maybe our phones don't actually support the optimal CA combinations, since it seems you might not be able to just arbitrarily combine any bands:
@TOWMN -78?
So in the last election, if someone voted for me first, and @Mokubai second, their vote would go to @Mokubai once its certain I won
@Burgi ah, it's not the same person?
13:57
no?
alrighto
fixer's profile says virginia which is east coast, i think pgeek is california which is the west coast
@Burgi he would be one of the ones I'd like to see
