morning
wow... we have been paying for akismet for 4 years and never used it
Erf. My chair just broke.
o.O
time to go to the gym?
Lol. Maaaaybe. Not that heavy, and I've had it a while.
Basically it's one of those IKEA ones where the arm rests hold up the back and that broke at a screw
On both sides....
a good looking dog like you at the gym would have all the bitches lady dogs ladies fawning over you
08:59
human's about 90 kg

@JourneymanGeek how did it break?
why did @Pops but a bounty on this question, the answers are "meh" and 4 years old with no accepted answer

Q: Computer won't boot after a power outage

GuyToday we had a power outage in my area. As a result my two computers lost power (yes I know I should get a UPS). One of them restarted fine and the other, a Shuttle XPC Model S141H, will not boot. When power is plugged in I can see a yellow and orange diodes come on through the grill but when pre...

did the screw itself break?
or the armrest plastic? or the chair socket?
@Bob the plastic broke

Bob
oh
nothing a ton of epoxy won't fit ;)
09:05
I probably should have crimped the other one too
@Burgi no idea ;p
09:24
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere not me, sorry
I'm a crazy libertarian who releases everything in mit license
I do not think software licenses are good stuff
AWWW
@arda hello! haven't seen you in a long time!
hey rahul
Yeah same
was busy dealing with school and love life
Ohhh... How's it going?
(The love life, that is)
school is on spring break now, and bf is sleeping, so... chat time :)
@Rahul2001 It's going really well :)
Congrats!
Man, I wish that I had hols right now
It's freezing
09:36
hols? do you mean holiday?
Yes, That's British slang for holidays :)
I'm going to ask you to ignore my low level of understanding today, I'm intoxicated (people who are installing a new thingy that heats water is not doing a great job keeping the gas outside), hungry (they also cut water) and cold (no heater, no water, no heat) aand I forgot to take antideps so that just makes it weirder :)
@arda Nope, it's okay, everyone has low days... :)
> Combi Boiler
09:40
@arda Not very common here in India...
It's literally in every house in turkey
and why do we have to install a new one? because dad, who is trying to break up with mom (for acceptable reasons, honestly), canceled gas subscription and then when they reunited the next day and when he reapplied to gas subscription, it turned out that our heater wasn't good enough so we need a new one. yay
Ignore. Lack of antideps makes me a whiny person.
Bob
Bob
> reunited the next day
It's okay, I'm whiny sometimes too...
Bob
Bob
o.O
Yeah, my parents are a lot better off separated
09:51
so am I
whiny sometimes.
Separating me would be messy, and probably painful
@arda so it heats the house and the water?
@Rahul2001 tbh, most houses in india have electric or "random stuff set on fire" for water heating
@JourneymanGeek just water, which then heats radiators
yeah, as opposed to just heating water for hot water
but I suspect a good chunk of india dosen't need central heating
@JourneymanGeek It's not painful for me, I support it even. The messy part is reunion, not the separation.
@arda I think you misunderstand the completely confusing context.
likely
09:55
The so am I is for the whininess
2 people seperating can happen
one person seperating...
10:05
@Burgi fixed the loop!
$data = array_slice(file('messagelog.html'), -50);

foreach ($data as $line) {
    echo $line;
}
cool
sorry dude, i have been a little busy in the evenings
Hehe, it's okay
@Burgi Do you happen know how I can make it show lines from between the file though? As in from 20-30 maybe?
Ok, nevermind, I think I got it...
10:25
Hi, is this the right SE site to ask questions about Linux in general? (Specifically, a question about the diference between tiling, composing and stacking wwindows manager, and some questions about specific distributions)
@Rahul2001: That was it, sorry for the inconvenience
@DrakaSAN Technically, Linux is on-topic here too
@Rahul2001: Sure, that's why when I couldn't find Linux SE (what I was searching, forgot it was Unix & Linux...) I came here, but the questions are more about the internals of linux than how to use them :)
No problem, enjoy
10:32
@DrakaSAN U&L is quite technical
11:30
how can i convince graphic designers to adopt version control?
@Burgi I don't think you can...
@Burgi explain it to them , in the end of the speech tell them why you think that is the only way.
if they already understand the explaination, then it is just a 15 minute lecture and nobody wants that, they view it as punisment and will think about it
If they think your splaining and convincing could be a good thing, and you did not tick them off when they present (to you) thier viewpoint also, then they will think about it
then followup somehow, before you realise most of them didnt . . . think about it for long.
11:58
@Burgi the way programmers do? Pretty darned hard
12:09
GIT has LFS now which can handle photoshop and indesign
@Burgi Relying on Git+LFS for version control of PSD files is like putting your compiled binaries into Git for version control of source code
That being said, I don't know any proper version control systems for any graphics format ;P
@Burgi more like any form of version control for non technical folk needs to be invisible
At the studio I worked in, they did this by the means of a horribly convoluted set of scripts and a big, specialised storage system which I can't remember the name of, which did its own daily backups
12:43
To complain about bureaucracy, please print this fillable PDF and deliver it to department XN-IV sector 00BETA room 215B on thursdays 11AM-2PM. Must bring your SSN, gov issued ID with photo, marriage certificate, all school reports since kindergarten. All in triplicate, originals included
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol
@DavidPostill Yes, I'm mad at bureaucracy, can you tell?
I passed the exam for some university-level distance education course.
Distance education or distance learning is the education of students who may not always be physically present at a school. Courses that are conducted (51 percent or more) are either hybrid, blended or 100% whole instruction. Massive open online courses (MOOCs), offering large-scale interactive participation and open access through the World Wide Web or other network technologies, are recent developments in distance education. A number of other terms (distributed learning, e-learning, online learning, etc.) are used roughly synonymously with distance education. == History == One of the earliest...
This distance education course requires me to enroll physically.
The "signup form" they want me to print is not even a fillable PDF, it's just the same signup form I filled for the exams a few months ago. Literally the same, as in the same URL.
Please print and bring your enrollment form => domain.com/exam-signup/your-data-we-already-have-because-you-already-filled-it-a‌ll-and-it-is-on-our-servers.php
Now I have to print it and take it to a 2hs away trip.
THIS IS SO DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB
Oh, and it's open 10am-6pm TODAY ONLY so I have to miss half a day's work. Yay.
@OliverSalzburg i don't think it matters for images as they are not compiled but as @JourneymanGeek says the process needs to be transparent and simple
@ThatBrazilianGuy doesn't matter, can you not just say you were working all day?
13:19
@Burgi something like owncloud with a 'specific' working directory and its own versioning would probably work well enough
blah
@Burgi it feels like we're starting with a solution and working back to the problem
what's the actual problem? ;p
Are you trying to build a system for 'oopsies' or collabrorative work?
both
its all theoretical of course as the graphics people are in silo thinking and are happy to redo a ton of work if they lose it
13:40
So... We broke up :(
why?

in post-europe britain we will all have our own nigel farage to personally request websites for us
@JourneymanGeek xD
14:40
@Burgi Say that to whom? The only contact info they have is a phone number that no one picks up.
Besides that: HA HA HA HA HA HA. You surely know no true bureaucracy.
One of the papers they want is older than @Rahul2001.
i was you commit the F word towards your employer
And I have no idea where it could be. The papers, I mean.
@Burgi ...why would I do that? I think you misunderstood something.
so you didn't lose half a days pay...
i 'reguarly' have to get my birth certicate out
14:44
I told my boss I had to miss work today so I had to go to *dumb department nr xyz9/73".
Boss said: "sure".
@Burgi We're not paid per day / hour, we're paid per month.
still in the UK you'd lose half a day
If I get sick, I still get that day's pay.
o.O
I think technically if I miss work for personal reasons my boss would have to enter it in some system and I'd miss that day's equivalent pay
But every boss I ever had in this job told me they're more concerned with results than with hours worked.
Now let me get back to completely freaking out on where the hell this old piece of paper could be.
I've found a photocopy with an official stamp saying it's an authentic copy and theoretically it should have the same value as an original.
ah fresh icon
14:47
I've seen people being denied stuff when shown these "authenticated copies".
What's the f#@$@% point of them, then? Getting our money? Hmpf!

@ThatBrazilianGuy this is why I have two official copies of my degree cert ;p
Hopefully @JourneymanGeek doesnt make me change it

what would be the best versioning tool for sourcing excel spreadsheet?
thats a good question
there are 2 different (popular) formats
one format is a compressed zip file renamed
that consists of xml garbage
thats easily sourceable / versionable
the other format.. not sure.
I read about Tortoise somewhere
but it does not seem to be easy to use
you could just use regular git, but dont use excel files.. use csvs instead.
15:35
thing is we have a lot of vb macros within these excel files
maybe possible with VS 2015
I've always wondered how easy it can be
would it be a good question to ask on super user?
i think theres a sep xml file for like macros n stuff
git should be enough then...?
yeah and some sort of wrapper
15:44
what kind of wrapper would englob the macro issue?
if you dont want the repo publically accessibile, i recommend getting an account that allow you to make your business repos private.
I want to use bitbucket for now
if we are going for private hosting, we would switch to git lab
but not now

Q: How to perform better document version control on Excel files and SQL schema files

Marcus ThorntonI am in charge of several Excel files and SQL schema files. How should I perform better document version control on these files? I need to know the part modified (different part) in these file and keep all the versions for reference. Currently I am appending the time stamp on the file name, but I...

its source controlling stored procedures that i don't understand
@Burgi: Its a bit different, but versioning databases isnt that difficult.
@Burgi: All you do is script out all your model.. you use that as a base.. and make changes to that base script.
@Burgi: Anytime you introduce new objects, you create migration scripts and track those.
@Burgi: Also redgate has redgate source control which is pretty beast for db platforms.
Which SU you like to be?:
In computing, the superuser is a special user account used for system administration. Depending on the operating system (OS), the actual name of this account might be root, administrator, admin or supervisor. In some cases, the actual name of the account is not the determining factor; on Unix-like systems, for example, the user with a user identifier (UID) of zero is the superuser, regardless of the name of that account; and in systems which implement a role based security model, any user with the role of superuser (or its synonyms) can carry out all actions of the superuser account. The principle...

i don't understand the question
By the way, How meta got his place as hat/top in the logo of meta.SU? I found most of has parallel or bottom position.

@Dog I think Verizon's LTE Advanced deployment currently throttles any given connection to well under 100 Mbps even in ideal conditions (completely empty tower, perfect signal strength)... not sure what the exact figure is but it's at least 54 Mbps
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic Damn
We have some throttles here and there, usually 100Mbps being the lowest and they're usually strategically raised in areas where higher speeds are possible (e.g. LTE-A deployed areas have 150Mbps/200Mbps caps, some areas have none)
AFAIK we're currently on 3x3 MIMO
Dog
Dog
There's one 100Mbps capped LTE-A 300Mbps tower I know of, and a couple 150Mbps capped ones too, that was middle of last year though
Industry insiders have told me 3xCA (450Mbps) being rolled out will see caps increasing to 400 or removed altogether though I fail to see the point of capping at these levels to begin with
@allquixotic CA != MIMO
(Most phones have only 2x2 MIMO, though it's possible network towers are capable of more I'm yet to see any end user device support it)
I'm disappointed by the lack of 3x20 CA tbh. They were waxing lyrical about it last summer, and it's been in the network deployment plans for over a year. Still only place I know of that has it is the test site at Wembley Stadium, London
Dog
Dog
> Apple has chosen to implement 3-Way Carrier Aggregation on the downlink and 2-Way Carrier Aggregation on the uplink for contiguous Band 7 or Band 41. Higher Order Modulation (DL-256QAM, UL-64QAM), and Higher Order MIMO (4×4 MIMO) have not been implemented.
> Therefore, the peak theoretical downlink speeds are limited to 450Mbps when aggregating three 20MHz wide LTE component carriers.
450Mbps is a 2x2 3x20 speed
3x3 would give you 675Mbps.
16:36
well at least my phone will support Verizon's maximum speeds for about 5 years :P
I doubt they'll actually lift the throttling to 450 Mbps any time soon
Dog
Dog
Yeah, you see later on it reports supporting 2x1 MIMO only
Regardless, thanks for the link. I like this site. Nice detailed technical insights and none of this warbley marketing bollocks or completely incorrect use of common terms you get on most sites

Even Ars gets something wrong at least once by now.
Dog
Dog
That's the kind of testing I like to see. Not the "We drove around town a bit and didn't notice any dropped calls" most sites do
Interesting to see Apple's implemented upstream CA. Not seen that advertised anywhere yet. Engineering menus on my S7 implies it has the capability too, but no networks support it despite it being far more important than this 450Mbps downstream bollocks.
@Dog of course, if you're sucking down data at some of the rates that are possible with these new high-end CA configurations, in the US, and you don't have a grandfathered unlimited data plan (which are quickly being strangled/shut down), you're probably paying about a dollar per second (or more) for the metered data you're accruing
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic I usually stay out of data usage conversations these days because either my usage is so utterly untypical or I'm just obliviously ignorant to how people can possibly eat through 10GB+ a month and complain it's "too little" if they don't use it as their main home broadband connection
Can we please delete this question? It's too embarassing... Thanks Valentin! — guerda Apr 7 '10 at 13:34
16:44
it'd be like saying "yeah, the power company just opened up a new line to my house, I can get up to 15000 Volts x 400 Amps!" and then using that and going "well shit, now my electric bill is $250,000"
Dog
Dog
I mean the last figures I saw were average usage of 1.5GB per month on unlimited 3G contracts and 2.5GB on 4G. Those were years ago, so probably in the 5-10GB range now. But still.
When average usage was <3GB people were complaining 4G sucks because what's the point of these speeds when you can only get a maximum of 20GB a month! That's so ridiculously low!
People now continue to complain 50/100GB/month packages are nowhere near enough, despite average usage still being well below 10GB I'd bet.
Bearing in mind too... LTE hasn't really improved spectral efficiency that much over 3G. It's just made it a whole lot easier to give an entire sector's capacity to one single user.
450Mbps might not be useful to one person but when you have 100 people drawing on that capacity it's better to have 4.5Mbps each than 1Mbps each...
"I could eat through my entire data allowance in X minutes"
My response: They didn't build that ultra-high-capacity tower just for *you*, one person.
@Dog yeah, but nobody is going to even attempt to apply workloads that would quickly run them dangerously toward their data cap, which is why usage remains low -- people are smarter than that -- there are things people want to do, and would do if they had the data cap to allow it, but instead they realize what their data realistically lets them do, and they basically use it as an email machine and the occasional GPS nav
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic Except these figures I'm quoting are from the (only) network that has unlimited data usage plans (and most users are on it).
also, "average" is not a good algorithm to apply to this problem; you're counting millions of users who treat their fancy $500 iPhone/S7 like it's a cell phone from 1994, and don't even know they can use the browser to look up when the hardware store closes
Dog
Dog
Did I mention most people pay for 3x bigger allowances than they actually use because they drastically overestimate their usage?
16:48
most people are stupid; that doesn't mean they wouldn't use the features if they knew how to use them, it just means they're dumb
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic From a network planning point of view, I'm afraid the average "stupid" person is weighted heavily in plans :-P
also, I'm sure a lot of people would cancel their 3.5 Mbps ADSL that drops out in the rain if they could get unlimited 10 Mbps over cellular
Dog
Dog
Networks, plans, and allowances aren't built for geeks, enthusiasts, or engineers, they're geared at the "average" dumb person.
Welp, just set up brand-new fridge.
Dog
Dog
Heck I could apply the same whinging to phones and laptops. So much harder to find something i want these days that hasn't been dumbed down, shinyfied, or had half it's power removed for MOAR THINNESS to make it attractive to the general public.
16:51
I still believe the cellular network has the capacity to become a viable primary internet connection for many people who have poor / no landline service
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic The way things are built now (in the UK) I have to say they are not.
@Dog the problem, here, is that we have so much fucking land area, and houses are so spread out, that the networks literally can't afford to bring fiber to everyone's home
I still have no idea how they managed to bring phone lines to every home; that involved a fuckton of government funding that the government does not wish to pay again for fiber
Despite the large number of reviews indicating technical problems with the app, it runs just fine on my Nexus 5X. It does seem to use an awful lot of odd permissions; those have been disabled through the OS.
Dog
Dog
Don't get me wrong, wireless is an excellent way to provide fast, reliable internet to vast areas if done right. But right now the spectrum just isn't there for primary broadband use.
16:52
definitely not the fucking Republicans who now run everything
@Dog it can be there if you increase tower density; it's much cheaper to run cables to a few centralized locations (say, a tower at the edge of every neighborhood) instead of having to run cables down every street, dig up every street, etc
Dog
Dog
Edinburgh consistently ranks among the top 3 fastest cities in the UK for 3G/4G speeds, yet in neighbourhoods where even 15% of people use it for their primary home connection it'll still plummet to <1Mbps at peak times
@allquixotic Well that's basically what they're trying to achieve with 5G
consider the silly extreme: spectrum is irrelevant if every person had a tower to themselves... on the other extreme, they figure out how far it's physically possible to transmit an LTE signal somewhat reliably, and build the towers at that maximum distance between each other
Dog
Dog
I mean quite literally the only difference from 4G to 5G is 5G uses more towers.
somewhere in the middle is a happy medium that allows true unlimited (300 GB per month or more, if there's a cap, per user, without charging $450+/month in data fees) for primary Internet connection usage
Dog
Dog
4G was supposed to benefit a lot from high tower density, small neighbourhood deployments, and thousands of lamp-post microsites, but exactly zero networks have bothered to even start doing it.
Instead they basically said bugger it, we'll wait for "5G" -_-
16:55
it's frustrating because the landline carriers don't want to bring high-speed landlines here, and the cellular carriers don't want to offer unlimited cellular
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic Considering you still get congestion on cable networks with >5Gbps capacity per node, I think you vastly underestimate the demand fixed home connections place on ISPs.
they're basically saying "hey, all you technical people who want decent Internet connections? go live in a 5 foot square box and cram yourselves in at a population density that makes Japan look rural, so we don't have to run as much cable, save money and maximize our ROI"
Dog
Dog
Even if they had an LTE tower for each cable cabinet, it'd still have 1/10th the capacity.
@Dog Oddly enough, I have never encountered any significant level of congestion on my Spectrum Internet connection.
Dog
Dog
It'd never work in cities with skyscrapers, but then again, there's good FTTx coverage there anyway.
I believe the UK government is heavily invested in using LTE to bring broadband coverage to the rural areas that can't be covered by FTTx so we'll see how that goes in practice...
16:58
On the other hand, I've had serious congestion problems in some places on AT&T, including the inability to even make calls reliably despite an excellent LTE signal.
Dog
Dog
(As it's basically a public infrastructure project backed by the government rather than relying on commercial feasibility in those areas)
@Dog our government is too, and our carriers pay lip service to it, but then charge a standard $5 to $10 per GB going rate, and this is for suburban deployments, not even close to rural
Dog
Dog
A few companies have started up providing wireless fixed broadband to underserved areas, though they don't generally offer unlimited either and rarely expand very far
there are no grain silos or fields anywhere near me; it's a built-up community of around 80,000 people in a fairly small area
Dog
Dog
@allquixotic Well we have (for now) that EU business of guaranteed minimum service of 20Mbps or something to everyone by 2020
