WTF, adding in print statements causes threads inside the TS client to hang
maybe qWarning() will work
Dog

If you’re one of those who takes the extremities of gaming culture in jest, you’ll get a kick out of this. The Acer Predator 21 X is not only gaudy, lumbering and unnecessarily equipped with a full-size mechanical keyboard, but it’ll also set you back a good chunk of change. If you have $8,999 (£7,350, AU$12,500) to spare and literally nothing better to spend it on, well, the Acer Predator 21 X is certainly an option.
Want.
Pisses me off though you still can't get G-Sync and Optimus at the same time, and practically no manufacturers specify if it's possible to turn off the dGPU in BIOS
nope, qWarning doesn't work
@Dog I noticed they have space for another display on top of the keyboard.... :P

Dell has the laptop I want in the US for 500 pounds cheaper than the old version of it in the UK
Except in the US 32GB of RAM is a $200 add-on whereas here it's 64 pounds
fucks sake
Spose I could use the 500 pound difference as an excuse to fly to the US
All I want is absolutely everything in a tiny package, for little money. Why is this so hard do find?!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic oh, how did you install Qt?
I think that's the part that messed up QDebug for me
both Qt itself and the project must not have spaces in any of the paths

Dang it why is it so hard to choose a laptop
@Bob o_O
I'm using the Qt from TS itself

@Bob I agree strongly. I personally prefer the Star Wars mod, but without it it's still a good game
I want to help Geek become self-sufficient
because, if you recall, when I ended up being the AI's target, I was able to hang on. I lost, like, one planet
another cool one to play would be Hearts of Iron IV, but that's even slower, and probably not Geek's cup of tea
@allquixotic eh, I find SOSE overwhelming.
04:19
@JourneymanGeek that's fair, but you can make it less so by organizing and focusing on the (few) things that are important
building and upgrading your "border" starbases; managing your "main" powerful fleet with Ctrl+1 (assign it an action group) and keep after it...
if you're expanding, only expand on one world at a time, and when it's stable and fortified, then move on
Its a bit deeper than "my tactics suck"
lol
I just don't feel the game
granted the two things are probably linked
04:43
@Burgi That reminded me of those Aji Ichiban stores in Hong Kong. There's one here in NYC.
!!/wiki Aji Ichiban
Aji Ichiban (Japanese: 優の良品, Chinese: 優之良品) is one of the largest snack food franchises in Hong Kong, established in 1993 by Lai Chan Yuk Hing and Lai Hin Tai, which was the president and managing director, respectively. Despite having a hiragana syllabary no (の) in its name, Aji Ichiban is not a Japanese franchise. There are over 90 international locations in varying international destinations. == Product == Items sold vary by location and encompass a wide range of flavors from both East Asian, Japanese and American cuisines, including beef jerky, dried apricots, Skittles, chocolates, nonpareils...
First thing that came to mind when I looked up "pick-and-mix".

@allquixotic I need to too -_-
@allquixotic Remember when I got targeted and just kept getting pushed back? :\
@allquixotic I've not heard of it.
@allquixotic Depends on AI difficulty :P
I had fully upgraded starbases (granted, I think I was Advent, not TEC) and a fairly large battleship/frigate fleet. The AI came at it with titans, battleships and cruisers... bye-bye fleet. Bye-bye planets. Bye-bye starbases :(
@JourneymanGeek :(
Then again you seem to be the "MOAR BULLETS" kind of gamer :P
At least in Borderlands.
lol
MOAR DAKKA!
More practically, I tend to prefer to have to focus on one problem target at a time
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, that too :P
@JourneymanGeek I don't think you were with us (late night AEST) when we played Stellaris.
Oh god the multitasking.

@JourneymanGeek Well we spent like 3 (4?) nights on SoaSE -- I think it was when quix had hols but you were busy -- and weren't even halfway done.
And the rebellions had just started, which could've been a massive setback.
;p
Yeah, faaaaaar to complicated for me
Even worse when we're picking up after a while
Speaking of which
Borderlands next weekend? ;p

@JourneymanGeek ah.

06:28
@Bob as I recall, it took BOTH of our fleets combined (and we suffered significant losses of top-tier ships) to repel the Stellaris equivalent of the Zerg
Hearts of Iron IV is Stellaris (same engine, actually) during WWII
@Bob either. I might be able to play something tonight actually
06:53
@Bob - What game are you playing?
@JourneymanGeek What Borderlands game?
@bwDraco the first
I've been unable to play for an extended period of time due to family commitments tho
I was hoping it was Borderlands 2, could use some friends on a raid boss. However, I have not touched the game in ages so it may take several days for me to get accustomed to it (and my character's setup, etc.) again.
06:54
We're getting to that eventually
(50 Psycho with a completed Normal Mode campaign and partially-completed DLC, got bored and stopped playing; very little progress in TVHM)
wow, that's a lot of playing...

Just logged into Gearbox SHiFT. It's been a very long time :P
Ah well. I might just decide to install BL2 once again and fire it up.
All saves are still on the machine.
Maybe I should roll another Psycho and play from the beginning again (albeit with the benefit of Badass Rank bonuses and Claptrap's Secret Stash) to get a feel for the game before going back to my main character...
(Badass Rank applies at the profile level and is shared across characters; Claptrap's Secret Stash is a profile-level storage box to allow for "twinking", or movement of items across characters)

Hi. I bought a WD hard drive, but it turned out I got the wrong one for NAS storage (there is a red and a green). Any way, the hard drive got corrupted, data loss etc. My question is, does this suggest the hard drive itself is broken? Or could I just reformat it and use it as a hard drive in my computer. Would you guys trust the hard drive?
08:56
I wouldn't
I would format the drive, then return it under warranty
WD has a test suite. Run it. If it fails, and it's under warranty, return it. Else if it passes... I Donno. It's up to you.
I'd use it for things I don't mind losing
Data corruption need not be hardware and there is insufficient information to tell
09:28
either replace it or throw it out, data is to valuable to lose, because you use a hdd that's starting to fail.
I learned the hard way...
I waited to long, recovered after a soft-failure, and lost my data
( hdd ) lost its partitions
Bob
Bob
@MyDaftQuestions One question that comes to mind is how you came to the conclusion of "corruption" and what the scope is.
@JourneymanGeek Or it could be different hardware. Faulty RAM can result in corrupted files. Faulty motherboards. SATA controllers. Lots of things.
Even sata cables
Rule of thumb for me is if data matters, the media shouldn't ;p
09:44
Hi¡
I'm getting into deep learning and I realize that my hardware is not sufficient for the purposes, so I would like to upgrade it, since I am on a budget and buying a new PC out of the box is not an option :)

This is my system as of now:

- motherboard asrock 960gm-vgs3 fx
- CPU AMD FX-4300 Quad Core X4
- graphic card AMD Radeon HD
- RAM Kingston 1600Mhz DDR3 8gb
- Hard Disk HDD SATA3 Seagate 1Tb (6gb/s)

Looking over the internet it seems that the first upgrade I need to make is to change te graphic card with a cuda/cudNN compatible GPU (so nvidia).
._.
@user5609462 essentially you can generally replace any arbitrary modern video card with any other arbitrary video card as long as it fits in your case and you have the appropriate power adaptors
But no idea what's the 'best' option here
sometimes GPGPU tasks run better on AMD and hardware recs is probably the place to ask if you can go "I need to run this this and this, and I need these features on a budget of 2 clams and a bone"
Also, get a decent SSD. And without knowing what exactly is bottlenecking, its hard to say what you really need.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Depends which APIs @user5609462 is using.
@Bob hence the sometimes ;p
Bob
Bob
If they're using OpenCL, then maybe AMD. Look at benchmarks, do a price/perf comparison.
CUDA is Nvidia-only, AFAIK. It simply won't work on AMD cards.
09:59
ah yeah
Bob
Bob
So if CUDA is a requirement for the software @user5609462 is using, then Nvidia is the only option.
Bob
Bob
However, if you're writing your own program (and not in e.g. a college course that requires CUDA), consider using OpenCL instead for broader compatibility.
@user5609462 Also, depending on how much you actually need to run, you might find it cheaper to use a hosted solution, e.g. AWS, Google Compute Engine, Azure, etc..
^ what he said.
Bob
Bob
AWS definitely offers GPU instances (with very beefy compute-heavy cards that are >$2000 ea if you wanted to buy the hardware). Azure is introducing them now but limited availability for the moment. I don't know about Google Compute.
e.g. for 90c/hour you get access to a single Nvidia K80 GPU.
A 2-GPU Nvidia K80 card would cost $4000.
10:07
I'm using tensorflow on python so I think CUDA is quite essential to run on my own machine
Bob
Bob
@user5609462 Ah, looks like it supports OpenCL, but only experimentally. So, yea, you're better off getting a Nvidia card.
Or consider offloading to a hosted server.
@user5609462 What kind of budget are you working with? And what kind of runtimes?
Say, estimate how many hours per month you will be running this application.
And also estimate how long you want to do this for. Are you just playing around with it for a few months and maybe move on to something else next year? Do you plan to keep going with it for five years? etc.
It's highly likely that running on AWS/Azure will be far better value for money than buying a single new GPU.
(Unless you wanted to get a better GPU anyway for gaming :P)
The AWS/Azure method would also give you access to a far more powerful CPU and more RAM at the same time.
@Bob thank you! I will do the math :D
@user5609462 You can use the CPU mode of TF to build the initial version of it on smaller data and for the final training you can either spin up a GPU node in AWS or a cluster based on the size of the data. It shouldn't be too expensive.
Bob
Bob
Oh yea. Listen to @HackToHell, he does machine learning stuff :P
(not the advice you want, but the advice you need (tm) )
Bob
Bob
10:17
@JourneymanGeek Ha. That's why giving the reason is important :P
"I want a better GPU on a budget." => "Sure, get this gaming-oriented GPU."
@Bob Well I didn't give any solid suggestions ;p
Bob
Bob
"I want a better GPU on a budget for compute/TensorFlow." => "Since you don't need low latency for gaming, you're better off renting a server."
just that any GPU he got would likely fit ;p
I mostly deploy ML stuff these days, but yeah AWS is >>> getting a budget GPU because it's still going to be slow
AWS has monster GPUs and you can effectively run them for a fraction of the cost of owning one

does TOR entry node know your IP Address?
Hey, does anyone here have Windows 10 experience? I got myself into a shitty situation - a driver update Windows installed automatically got me a black screen with cursor scenario.
I'd do a system restore, but it requires a local user password - my computer uses a Microsoft account and the Microsoft password doesn't work.
cc @OliverSalzburg
So, I tried a lot of stuff until now - but it won't budge - I'm very close to just formatting it but I'd rather not spend half a day doing that and re-downloading everything
Feels like shit :D
(Also - I thought maybe safe mode with networking could work but it doesn't)
I vaguely remember that being a known issue.

@DavidPostill the irony is that st anthony is the patron saint of elves

nah i was making it up

what is interesting is that he is the patron of lost articles and the seekers of lost articles. Is that a conflict of interest?
another conflict is sterility and pregnant women

There is a St Nyssa, and apparently Nyssa is "friendly elf or fairy" to Scandinavians :)

@JourneymanGeek lol. I wonder which answer it is referring to?
@JourneymanGeek I do remember early win10 installs automatically updating drivers and messing up the graphics part. But I only needed to solve that once. (I pulled the dedicated card and use the on CPU graphics in combination with my local account).
@Hennes I vaguely remeber a similar issue when I first upgrade but totally don't remember how I fixed it
Bob
Bob
floof
I assumed it was fixed by now. It was something with an incompatible driver.
I assumed that after a few weeks MS would have pulled that driver from windows updates.
The initial fix (IIRC) was to set windows to never update drivers automatically.
15:26
I never make assumptions about fixing anything ...
Yeah.
I gave up about freshly installing windows 7; 12+ days 'searching for updates' is just to long.
(And yes, I also tried the cumulative updates. Same result... )

16:11
no
legitimate streaming services are the best place for movies
I need them for my collection. :3
Dont tell me people here don't use torrent?
Bob
Bob
Do I need to add "requests for piracy" to the room not-topical list?
@AnimeshAshish VTC opinion based
I apologize for my mistake.
@Bob Not all torrents are pirated ...
16:14
I still apoligize @Bob
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill And I never claimed they were.
There's nothing wrong with discussing the mechanics of bittorrent.
There is something wrong with asking for sources for "software/movies".
Basically: it's something we do not discuss here.
I download LibreOffice from the official torrents
@Bob : I am a newbie, I am bound to make mistakes. The best part is I get to learn from them. I hope you cut me some slack in future. I don't know much places to ask this. So, I went ahead. My bad. I hope I am forgiven.
Bob
Bob
@AnimeshAshish Sorry if I seem annoyed - we've been getting a fair bit of this recently.
@AnimeshAshish There's no problem. You're fully welcome to stay and ... uh... chat. Just not about things against site-ToS :P
@Bob : I am glad I am not flagged. Can you atleast suggest me where I could get ask this to get my query answered?
*ask
Bob
Bob
16:18
@AnimeshAshish Sorry - all I can really say is "not on Stack Exchange"
There are other forums with more lenient policies.
@Bob : So I switch my question to "What are other forums with policies linient" enough to discuss this.
Bob
Bob
@AnimeshAshish Just to be clear (because apparently @DavidPostill objects): if you're asking whether the BitTorrent protocol is preferred over HTTP when offered by the legal owner of a work, that's fine. If you're asking about other software, movies, etc., that are not officially distributed via BT... don't do that here.
@Bob : I am discussing about the former one.
But the switch-ed question is left unanswered.
Bob
Bob
There's an important distinction here because the former would be talking about relative efficiencies of the software protocols, while the latter would be more into discussions of what such sources might be "safer" or "more complete" or... yea.
"Any linient forums that I can find where discussions related to torrents aren't objected at all"
@Bob And when I say "arent objected" it means I don't have to think twice before shooting another cannon. (in simpler, wittier words)
16:25
@Bob I'm not objecting - just making an observation ...
Bob
Bob
Eh. I'm not about to flag or anything like that. The original message was supposed to be a light reminder. And it was only about piracy. If that's not what your request was about, that's perfectly fine.
@Bob : You still haven't answered me. Any other "forums" with lighter rules?
@DavidPostill : Any idea when will @allquixotic would be online?
@AnimeshAshish No
Bob
Bob
And to answer that first interpretation: HTTP tends to be more available (and easiest to use). BT can potentially provide higher download speeds if it's a well-shared file, as many large open-source software projects tend to be. BT has some protocol advantages such as built-in checksumming, support for folder downloads, and better download resumption/partial downloads.
Which method is "better" is rather situational and also depends on personal preference.
HTTP tends to be the best one to try first, simply because it's easier, especially for smaller downloads.
If you're on an unreliable network, BT might be better (w/ checksums and resumption).
@Bob : Can you tell me the websites which are considered "best" in getting torrent links from. If thats in the domain of being in the "green zone" of the chat.
Bob
Bob
16:31
HTTP is definitely more lightweight - less network traffic/noise/overhead, less CPU usage if you're on a very slim machine.
@AnimeshAshish From the official distributor of whatever you're trying to download.
e.g. Canonical provides official Ubuntu torrents here: ubuntu.com/download/alternative-downloads
I have heard "piratebay" is the best and "kickasstorrents" are offline. So..
Bob
Bob
... and that goes well outside the "we can discuss the protocol, but not piracy" bit.
I so miss you @allquixotic :(
@Bob : Thank you Bob for your esteemed precious time. I am highly obliged that I got the tremendous opportunity to be shared and included in your time. I'd owe you for the information you imparted :)

@Rahul2001 : ARe you from the ones that woulld consider keeping it private? (I'm asking that am I allowed to ask about where do you live {state etc} from you)
@AnimeshAshish Uh, depend on what you want to ask. I probably would want to keep a lot of stuff private since this is a public chat room, but you can ask anyway.

As 15 is a very young age to start with. Did you read a book/course
@AnimeshAshish I picked up a book on HTML from the library when I was in 6th grade... That got me started with actual computer programming. Have been doing robotics since 4th grade. I have always been interested in technology and stuff...
