@JourneymanGeek yup, appears it is approximately linear
there was a bug in W7-ish (with only certain graphics drivers / cards, I believe) where the per-pixel RAM cost in dwm.exe was astronomically huge
but on the whole, its not a lot of ram
there was a forum post somewhere (maybe on SU) where some guy was like, if I run my monitor at 1024x768 I'm fine, DWM "only" eats 500 MB of RAM, but if I run at 1920x1080 it eats like 8 gigs
@Burgi rofl
15:27
Has anyone tried f2ko.de/en/mvnc.php ?
no
need some help to get in the right direction: I've got a broken 1tb external hdd which isn't recognized by windows. In the past I was able to mount them with ubuntu and used testdisk to restore the data/partition tables. But there's not even a device under /dev for this hdd. quick tip where to start to search ?(I'm not a linux genius but willing to read :) )
15:43
Restore from backup
@Annaduh He obviously doesn't have one
@SaintCore dmesg
if nothing shows there it's very very dead
you g ot a usb caddy for it?
Oh wait you said external
so yeah, tail -f /var/log/dmesg
plug it in, hope something appears
If that doesn't work, try removing the drive from the enclosure and using a caddy you can drop a drive into
if that doesn't work.... freezer maybe
if it would be mine, there would be a backup @Annaduh
dmesg says:
new SuperSpeed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd
New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1
....(some more detailed information about the vendor)
and then 4 times:
usb 2-1: reset SuperSpeed USB device number 4 using xhci_hcd
ok
So the 'device' itself is at least trying to connect.
normally there would be the path to the assocaited /dev right ?
*associated
15:51
not at this point
that's the kernel seeing something connecting on the usb bus
and then it failing any further than that.
it still could be a usb keyboard/mouse/hdd/sausage/rock/etc
Has it ever worked on this system?
well to be honest the device sounds really strange. from my opinion it sounds like it would try to start reading from the disk and stops immediately
clicking?
it could be a number of things - something bust in the caddy, power, something actually bust in the hdd
no not at all, sounds more like "scratching"
15:54
ooo dear
Did someone drop it?
he said no, but that was also my first thought :D
That disk right now be like..
nice :D
replugged the device, got again the reset SuperSpeed USB message 4 times and the "sound" repeats also four times(sry for my bad english :D)
15:57
you're doing fine, that disk is likely screwed
Can try removing it from enclosure and inserting directly into pc however unlikely to work.
well thanks anyway, will try this out next week at work. Thanks anyway for your help and have a nice weekend (:
you too, tell your users to make backups in future! :)
already done, more then once^^

!!caaaaat
Throttling torrents is stupid.
Throttling stupid is ...
It took too long to download this raspbian image...
16:43
@djsmiley2k nope no luck. the hdd also don't work when plugged in directly to a sata-port. anyway thanks :)

@Bob I couldn't read past the first page

Gee the S7 camera is so much better than the Z3C camera in low light it's not even funny
19:16
@Annaduh <fud> gee this is such a great camer KABOOOOOOM!!!!!!! X_x </fud>
@allquixotic S7, not Note 7.
S7's don't go Kaboom.
Heck none of my phones have ever gone kaboom, though I did have one Ebay battery once that kinda went oval shaped randomly while sitting on my desk (was a few years old)... I chucked it into the battery recycling at that point
:-O
Apple's Airpods still aren't actually available to buy? :-o
19:39
yup, they've moved into a new age of non-existant products
much better than non-innovative

i wanna go home
21:29
@BenN lol
21:51
I've recalibrated my laptop's display for 90 nits rather than the 80 nits previously set. This is partly because 80 nits is too low for my external Acer monitor to run consistently at (it's really temperature-sensitive, for starters).
@Annaduh wow
I hope to recalibrate the Acer display soon.
I wouldn't buy them anyway; BeoPlay H8/H9 are much better
That's one of the drawbacks of a cheap monitor: less consistent performance. My sample also suffers from rather bad IPS glow (although it's never really bothered me).
22:21
What's the disadvantage of not using GeForce Experience?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm fixing up a computer for my nephew, and he's not 13 years old, so as far as I know, he's not allowed to have an account. But without an account he can't have GeForce Experience which as far as I can tell means no automatic driver updates.
22:38
@WilliamMariager a parent can make the account for the minor
and you just stated the disadvantage yourself
no driver updates
Yeah I figured that'd be the only option. Not exactly great. Way to go NVIDIA. I wonder if Windows Update will still keep the newest drivers?
@WilliamMariager Windows Update doesn't update to the newest drivers, no; it will occasionally update to WHQL certified drivers about once or twice per year, depending on how frequently they want to update... possibly just the ODE drivers
you can still download the latest drivers without having an account; you just have to go to nvidia.com
you can also sign up for their mailing list to get an email each time a new driver comes out
Yeah, they way my nephew screwed up the computer, I doubt he'd be able to handle that. :P
I guess he'll just have to wait for when I visit to get updated drivers.
well why can't the parent take care of it? it's their computer as long as he's a minor, they should be responsible for the maintenance
They're more tech illiterate than their child.
22:44
if the parents are not computer literate enough to update the drivers, you can't exactly blame nvidia for covering their legal ass and not anticipating the edge case of a kid who's dangerous with computers enough to break them but wants the latest drivers and the parents don't know jack about computers
Well, they could just have an option of not having to have an account to have a secure system. :)
if (1) the kid weren't dangerous with computers or (2) didn't need the latest drivers or (3) the parents weren't so computer illiterate, there'd be no problem
@WilliamMariager secure? the GeForce Experience drivers have absolutely nothing to do with security; they're purely for performance on the latest AAA titles
in fact, being as performance focused as they are, I wouldn't be surprised if they're significantly less secure than the extremely well tested Optimal Drivers for Enterprise, which are released way less frequently
if there are security issues in drivers, Windows 10 generally pushes out the fix as an update
Also for graphics drivers?
the GFE Game Ready drivers are on like a 2-week release cycle; no one, and I mean no one, is good enough to be able to rigorously vet a driver for security vulnerabilities in that period of time
@WilliamMariager they do push graphics driver updates over Windows Update in Windows 10, like I said; it's just not often, and I don't know if there's any particular schedule, though security updates would definitely be a reason to do it
Obviously, but if an exploit is found, you'd like to get the update that fixes that exploit. I'm sure it's not very prevalent in graphics drivers, but it never hurts to keep the system up to date if possible. :)
22:49
@WilliamMariager security issues in the graphics stack are surprisingly common, but much of it is only exploitable by code running as the user on the system, which could wreak as much, if not more, havoc without doing anything to the graphics subsystem
things like information disclosure (reading from dirty buffers from other programs) and hooking into other processes using the graphics stack as an intermediary... but if you have a malicious program on the user's system, why waste time doing that, there are easier, juicier targets like their session cookies, password files, documents, etc
Yeah that makes sense. Anyways, I'll just leave it to Windows Update for now. Appreciate the help.

Q: Computer chip in human brain

William LwangaI would like to find out how to inject the computer chip into a human beings simultaneously to the entire world within a short period of time. This is for my science fiction movie.I don't need the one that physically removes the part of the skull. The intravenous one is OK but how can this be achie...

23:32
...the update requires me to turn RAPID mode off and on again. This will require a couple of reboots. Please stand by...
...and we're good to go.
(serial number removed)
No GeForce Experience seems to be a gopod thing.
If you install it you might get lots of popups of new drivers, and then it cosnsitently fails to install any
The only advantage I found to it is to grep the eventlog for URLs (which it fails to access) and then copy and paste those manually into a browser.
23:50
@Hennes Never had an issue thus far.
Every driver update I've done through GeForce Experience completes cleanly.
100% of the time (well, one the only computer I use an Nvida card in)
Contacting the website times out for me, but not if I try it via a browser.
Perhaps a locale-specific issue?
Applying the latest update...
I have so many neglected apps I need to update manually :\
I don't update the graphics driver as often as I should...
Update complete.
