Q: My program windows and text become fuzzy

Rana Ali RazaI installed a new 2GB RAM on my Dell Latitude E5500 and then installed Windows 8.1. After Installation my program windows, text and the screen started pixelated and fuzzy. I Thought it was due to graphics driver so I installed drivers but even after installing drivers this continues. So I wonder ...

Bad memory causing corrupted graphics on an IGP?
(it's getting late here)
This looks like bad memory to me given that the machine uses integrated graphics. Try running Memtest86+. If the test fails, send the memory module back. — bwDraco 3 mins ago

we're not even halfway through November!

I don't know much about the US political system, but is it possible for a third party to exist?

Oh, wow, thanks

There's a bunch more

Bob
@Rahul2001 Exist, yes, but they have basically no chance to win. Look up First Past the Post voting.
I tried to explain why FPTP effectively forces two parties in messages starting from this, though you can look it up yourself

10:24 AM
cpg grey on youtube has some great vids on it

@Bob We have FPTP but more than two parties

@Rahul2001 us politics never really had regional parties tho

THIS IS HILARIOUS!
> I'm being followed by my tail!
> I caught my tail!
> Someone is biting me!
> Dog 911: Hello, what is your emergency?
> Dog: My owner threw the ball but I didn't see where it went and now I can't find it.
> Dog 911: Did you try looking in his hand?
> Dog: Of course I looked in his h..... aww goddamnit.

Dog
10:50 AM
@Bob they started last week here

@djsmiley2k Account name.

dunno

Bob
11:08 AM
@Rahul2001 is that having more than two in existence, or more than two actually competitive?
as before, US has more than two, but there's a snowball's chance in hell anyone other than the big two will get elected

@Bob the latter

@Bob More than three competitive

Bob
catch-22: can't vote for third party because there's basically no chance they'll win (and your vote becomes meaningless), third party has basically no chance to win because no one votes for them
@Rahul2001 interesting. I can think of a few possible reasons, though I'm not sure which apply
voter education would be one of them. in a perfect world, voters don't try to game the system and just vote for who they prefer.
another would be that as two parties pull ahead, it gets harder and harder to undo
also, how many people don't want the most-likely-to-win. cause often votes for the second big party are actually votes against the first big party in disguise
that also goes along with polarisation

@Bob Party A: These guys don't do anything for us! Party B: Neither do these guys Party C: A NEW PARTY!? Let's give them a try!

Bob
@Rahul2001 yea, but if enough people feel that A is really really bad, and B is less bad, and are aware of the general FPTP issue... they they might vote B because voting C has a chance of letting A win
it's a funny situation where if less people are aware of FPTP issues they actually become less of an issue

11:15 AM
@Bob I don't see a general FPTP issue...
@Bob exactly

Bob
@Rahul2001 it's the high potential for a two-party system to form, that IRF/STV/preferential systems are better at avoiding
but it only happens when people (who are aware) try to game the voting system
FPTP is relatively easily gamed
brb

@Bob Fair enough, there were only two major national parties till very recently
But our's is a federal government, which has its pros...

Bob
s/IRF/IRV/

11:33 AM
@Bob practically speaking, there's a bunch of regional parties that compete in specific areas. There's a few strongholds for the big two. So practically in most cases its a coalition with various small parties.

Dog
11:46 AM
I think my Gaydar needs reinstalling

11:57 AM
sure, all we need is a large left handed metric 3 pound mallet...

Dog
Apparently I was surrounded by lesbians all night and didn't notice

the germans?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, there's a heavy tendency there, but anything can happen. by luck if nothing else :P
then again, the US started with fairly diverse parties too...

@Bob the US is much more homogenous than india is

i'm not sure exaclty why you would notice

Dog
12:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek no the Germans were two days ago
@djsmiley2k well its pretty obvious when you walk into a gay bar the people act a little different

Bob
@Dog they like cats?

Dog
@Bob the two straight girls and one straight guy in my room are all cat lovers too

Its not every day a cat walks into a gay bar...
2

Dog
@JourneymanGeek well that's the thing, I didn't know it was a gay bar

I doubt those have flashing rainbow signs right?

Dog
12:40 PM
Until I left and it was pointed out to me that the place was basically a gay bar but officially a... regular bar
@JourneymanGeek nup

@JourneymanGeek Schrödinger's cat walks into a gay bar. And doesn't.

@DavidPostill No one knows if it did, until its observed.
Then it demands to be let out again, then let in, then let out...

Dog
Excuse me. I only demand to be let out when I want to see if I want to go outside not back in
The door needs to be open for one to make an informed scientific decision.

wife is ill so im soloshopping, this could be good or bad

@djsmiley2k As in "what did you buy that for, you should have bought this instead you idiot?" ;p

@djsmiley2k Apparently the first time my dad did that, he accidentally bought 2kg of cumin....
(we usually buy much smaller packs)
._.
HNQ might be broken slightly

2:23 PM
@JourneymanGeek Why do you think so?

@DavidPostill something I consider trivial turned up on the hot questions list
its one of those "embarassingly simple throwaway answers"
not sure if it HNQed but it got 4 upvotes over a very short period of time

Bob
@JourneymanGeek lol, how long did that take to use?

@Bob er...
in theory its a year's supply
I think they either returned it unopened or swapped it for other things
I forget
well half year's
I think we usually buy 250g packs

Bob
ah

2:30 PM
@JourneymanGeek Hmm. "I am a low vision, so I always increase DPI." That makes the text smaller surely.

I think he means resolution...

@JourneymanGeek Yes. But increasing that also makes text smaller.

decreasing your resolution makes everything look bigger
wait
._.
Thanks, now I am confused

Bob
@DavidPostill s/DPI/DPI scaling/

So... what is OP really doing?

@JourneymanGeek still don't have it? :(
though, I suppose singlish would be... difficult... if it crosses over into other languages much

ah
I can set other places
not sure if UK or india would be a better fit

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't even use it :P

@Bob I break voice recognition

Bob

hey all
so the saga of the dying harddrive...
i managed to dig out my IDE caddy from the attic
i plug the poorly drive in and it pops up in windows fine
i browsed to the folder where all my mum's files are and i start a copy

@Dog Oh, I have an "I didn't know it was a gay bar" story too. It's funny, in hindsight... I guess.

while its whirring away to itself i browse the internet for a couple of minutes then an error message pops up "unable to read from drive". I look down at the drive and there is smoke billowing out out of caddy
i was in that much shock i just stared at it

Why the hell am I reading the "Cute cat theory of digital activism"?

it was only the smell of burning electronics that made me realise wtf was happening
i think the issue was with the caddy and not the drive

Oh, so that's the origin of the fridge method of HDD recovery!

5:46 PM
hehe
but the drive now won't power on in a brand new caddy
i think i need to post it off to someone to get the data recovered...

Not satisfied with all his rep score, now @JourneymanGeek uses his sock puppet to gather even more points:

AibobotThat's the standard tenkeyless Num Lock key layout found on many PCs. Turn off Num Lock - on my Lenovo, it's Fn + F10, but the combination may vary by manufacturer.

@Burgi that costs $$$
uve got backups, right?

yes but my mum hasn't been using them

.. now she learns the cost of backups :/

yup

5:51 PM
im serious about $$$

i think the control board is fried
yes i know

u might be able to find an identical board...
that can work

its an older drive

ebay
all depends how muchg that data is worth

based on the crying, i would say pretty darn valuable

5:57 PM
Ouch.

oh dear
i almost had that at work

these guys offer a free consultation: www.krollontrack.co.uk
i've never had a real electronics fire before

@Burgi I had my old style VDU in the office catch fire many (~20) years ago. That was fun ;p

Localization seems to be the biggest challenge with Cortana.

@bwDraco turning it off is the biggest challenge

those are my fav

when did intel buy mcafee?

6:42 PM
beats me, never knew
On August 19, 2010, Intel announced that it would purchase McAfee for $48 a share

Intel Security Group (previously McAfee, Inc. /ˈmækəfiː/) is an American global computer security software company headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and the world's largest dedicated security technology company. The company has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel since February 2011, and now forms part of its Intel Security division. On September 7, 2016, Intel announced a strategic deal with TPG Capital to convert Intel Security into a joint venture between Intel and TPG Capital called McAfee. TPG Capital will be the majority owner with 51% of McAfee. == History == === Earl...

February 28, 2011

Hey dave, sup babe
:D
I used to always sing songs about my name. One was "dave the babe", our name makes the best rhymes

are you on glue?

the branding on the mcafee site is now more intel than mcafee

"Intel is distancing itself from the name of its top security product, McAfee, after years of having its name dragged through the mud thanks to the misadventures of its founder, John McAfee.

Intel (INTC), which bought McAfee in 2010, will rebrand its subsidiary as Intel Security. But Intel will keep the logo we all know well -- that red shield that lives on many of our computers' toolbars."

well that explains that
Mr Mcafee is an odd character

2 hours later…
8:20 PM
yes, yes he is
seems millions of pounds does that to people

8:33 PM
I am going to continue to use Norton.
I will be getting another 5-seat license from Amazon when it's up.

eww
norton was one of hte worst I ever had the experience of using

As much as folks here don't like Norton, I can confidently say that for the last six years I've used it I have had essentially no trouble with it.
Norton Security (then Norton Internet Security) was overhauled for the 2007 release, with dramatic performance improvements. I have been using it since the 2009 release (maybe 2010, don't remember) and have been very, very happy.
The 2007 version involved a significant rewrite of the antivirus engine and UI. I still remember the full-page magazine ads boasting dramatic reductions in resource consumption and scan times.

8:49 PM
i've had no issues with mcafee since 2001 when i bought my original license

wat
just use malwarebytes and windows defender

I've has no issues just using avira and now avast for the last couple of years, together with comodo firewall (all free) . No windows firewall or AV here.

i've had the windows open since but the house still smells of burnt electronics

@Burgi It's hard to let out the magic smoke ;p

9:03 PM
my parents haven't commented on it so it may have gone or might be impregnated on my clothes or something

Bob
9:31 PM
@DavidPostill Ahhh, because it's the person's fault McAfee has such a bad reputation!
*cough*
@bwDraco Yea, no... dramatic reductions from "are you kidding me?!" to "oh come on..." don't really help that much.

its likely impregnated in ur nostrils

Bob
It's not necessarily something you'd identify as coming from the A/V, but if you do a speed comparison with lots of small files being copied from an 'unsafe' source or, say, extracted from an 'unsafe' archive - you'll often see dramatic differences. I'm talking >2x.
Best of all, it's not even consistent enough to properly test. Some days/files, it won't make that much difference. Others, I'll wonder why an extraction is so slow, realise, disable real-time protection (work machine...) re-do the extraction, and it'll be done in a couple seconds.
That's not even the worst part. Nope.
The worst part has gotta be the false positives. Of which there are many. In fact, dozens of false positives and not a single real detection in years.
If you include the alarmist "tracking cookie" detections, I'd even call it thousands of false positives.
More if you include the stupid insights crap. Oh, file has only been seen a couple times, great. And you can infer safety from that? Pull the other one...

Dog
10:11 PM
@Bob Same!

10:25 PM

11:13 PM
@Burgi what happened?

@JourneymanGeek Start here:
6 hours ago, by Burgi
hey all

Where are the Kaby Lake business Ultrabooks?
My father needs a new computer soon.

Ah.
@bwDraco kinda broad. What are you looking for?

Something along the lines of a ThinkPad Yoga. The machine must be of the convertible variety (at least capable of folding back for use as a tablet), and ideally has a detachable keyboard.
Pen input is a plus.

ah
Not quite my thing.

11:29 PM
trumps 8hr energy drink finnaly wore off, his first words were "What Have I done?"
later on that day he wrote a book called "My Struggle"
Then asked an intern if he could annex Poland to Kuwait
At the end of the day he discovered that the 50 illegal mexicans he deported all worked for him
Another good day in paradice

@Bob and @Dog know convertibles better.

Bob
huhwhaza?
@JourneymanGeek I only really deal with the lower end, and haven't really kept up with latest-gen :\
@bwDraco Question: how solid do you want the keyboard to be?

Ah. Hardware recs question time?

Bob
i.e. folio case like Surface Pro, or solid hinge connection like Surface Book?
Do you want the main tablet to use the keyboard as a stand (convertible laptop/tablet), or have its own kickstand (tablet w/ keyboard slapped on)?
@JourneymanGeek Does hwrecs work well for this kind of question?
It seems like one of the really really vague ones
Convertible/Kaby Lake/pen ... actually, there might not be so many of those :P
@bwDraco Also, budget.

About $1000-1200.

@Bob would get more eyes on it. And talking here helps narrow scope

Bob
@bwDraco Ok, that's actually mid-low end.
High-end easily goes past the $2000 range.
Low would be down to $500 or so, and depends on sales.

We have some wiggle room, though.

Bob
eww, this pomegranate iced tea tastes like cherry candy
@bwDraco Do you know what kind of keyboard you're looking for?

Mechanically attached (à la Surface Book).

Bob
11:42 PM
The solidly attached ones are much easier to use on the lap or sitting in bed, and the keys themselves tend to be better. But it's also almost always bulkier.
Ah, ok.
@bwDraco There's a slight variation where they're still magnetically attached without a lock, but do have a proper hinge.
Though those might only appear on the chinabooks :P

I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer.

Bob
@bwDraco Any particular reason you want Kaby Lake?
It's not a particularly big upgrade over Skylake.

Performance and efficiency. On mobile platforms, Kaby Lake provides a significant boost in performance while maintaining battery life.
We don't want an older platform, because we want the system to be good for at least five years,

Bob
There's always a newer one, though. Will you be waiting for the die shrink?
@bwDraco Oh yea. Core-M, ULV, or full-(mobile)power?

@ThatBrazilianGuy that's not me. he's got a moustashe he's a robot. (Also, I didn't expect that to HNQ. I 'need' those repcaps ._.)

11:49 PM
I think we're going to be looking at a type-U processor.

Bob
I suspect at 1000-1200 you're probably going to end up with Core-M. Maaaaybe ULV.
full-power doesn't make much sense on a tablet.

Type H is a no-go on thin systems.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Journeyman Qeek. No relation to Journeyman Geek.

Type Y processors aren't going to give us much in the way of sustained performance, which we need.

Bob
11:52 PM
@bwDraco Sustained performance in a tablet actually tends to run into heat issues.

It'll be a 12-13" system.

Bob
Consider if you really need the tablet form factor, or if a traditional (ultrabook) laptop might be more suitable.
14" is massive for a tablet
I'm not even sure if one exists

11.6" is going to be too small.

Bob
There are a few permanently-attached convertibles around there, but I don't recall a detachable one.
Oh wait Surface Book is 13.5"
@bwDraco If you weren't fixed on the whole detachable idea, h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/…

Bob
11:58 PM
unfortunately, kickstands are more common h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/…

A business machine is strongly preferred.

Bob
@bwDraco eh, I'm actually browsing through a Canadian proxy right now :P

Dog
@Bob What why

Bob
@bwDraco IMO you're asking for too much for $1200
@Dog Because that's where my OVH server is

Dog
@Bob When combined with the inevitably badly designed cooling solution, sure

11:59 PM
We can push over $2000, possibly even $3000, if necessary, but that's unlikely.

Bob
And because I'm at work
