Remember that metal-metal contact is optimal.

Paste is just to fill in the tiny imperfections. So it should be very very thin, not even really a layer.

'wet' paste helps with application, because it can flow into the gaps

once it's in, it's in. It's all good until you open it up again.

Used to throttle even under favorable conditions.

Seriously, if putting a big-ass case fan behind the GPU exhaust did not help much, the heatsink clearly isn't removing much heat from the GPU die. That means the thermal contact between the die and heatsink has gone bad.

(doing this used to bring substantial and measurable improvements in temperatures)

Before this change, I had thermal throttling even with windows open in cold weather (~50 °F) and my big fan placed behind the laptop to forcibly extract more heat from the exhaust vent.

Doing this is much too noisy and requires the laptop display to be lowered a bit to allow for airflow, so it's only done for unattended, heavy GPU workloads.
