@Burgi analyst, like engineer means nothing
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Daiso, perchance?
so its someone who does 'infrascture operations
@Bob no, specialist store
same place you can buy an immersion blender the size of a small outboard motor
infrascture operations could mean Networks?
wait, why are we buying gloves and pressure cookers? nobody's planning anything nefarious I hope?

A particularly slippery piece of ginger and my knife got into a disagreement. The ginger won. And the knife took it out on me.
12:11
@allquicatic To save you looking we also had a long discussion about how to cut onions without crying ...
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek might be a tad late - apparently I need to do something involving cement and concrete. at 10pm.

Won't the neighbours complain?

So now we have butcher's gloves, pressure cookers, cement and concrete...
@JourneymanGeek Shh. It's the neighbours who will be under the concrete!
12:20
(oh Hai NSA!)
Bob
Bob
nah, had a driveway poured today but apparently it needed touchups
yeah, a hand sticking out of the concrete would be a dead giveaway ;p

nmap/zenmap
on windows
nmap/zenmap for windows
....
zenmap totally runs on windows
13:33
righto
i get asked the weirdest things

Q: Finding the IP address of a walled in router

Journeyman GeekWell my router is not quite calling out, "For the love of God, Montresor!" but close enough. Its somewhere where I have no easy physical access to it. The short version? I need the ip address of a specific router in my network. The long version: I currently have 3 consumer routers, a Dlink DI...

I think this is the last time I used zenmap
turns out our VoIP phones aren't on a separate VLAN
yes. I quoted poe in a question, and have no regrets.
@JourneymanGeek Nevermore!
someone's mobile has stolen the DHCP address of a desk phone
13:47

1. Phones should be on a seperate vlan
2. wifi should be in a seperate...

> Lightening cables are standard.
"IT Director"
@Burgi Only if Apple can be said to be a standard ...
I have 2 lightning cables on my desk and even I don't think they're "standard"
I preordered the iPhone 7 Plus 256GB on release night and paid full retail price for it and I don't think lightning is any kind of a standard outside the Apple ecosystem
14:33
roar
@allquicatic TIL allq is rich
15:12
you know these "find your phone" apps, do they still work if someone has removed the SIM?
15:29
@Burgi Cerberus does. If they remove the SIM, it sends you a SMS with the new SIM phone number.
If you have root, you can install it as a system app, so it survives factory resets.
It does not survive flashing a new ROM, or other more intrusive actions.
It also does not survive dismantling your phone like a stolen car =/
so the standard Apple/android locator apps don't work if the SIM is removed?
Unless there's a Wi-Fi connection, it won't work.
There must be an Internet connection of some kind.
@Burgi The standard phone locators need a working connection.
If your phone is lost, it's probably away from a known wi-fi point.
If it was stolen, the very very first thing the thieves will do is remove the SIM.
rgr rgr
So it will be away from known wifi APs (because the thieves ran away), and no 3G, because no SIM
15:34
i didn't know if it worked of the IMEI number or something
I suppose it might be theoretically possible to locate a phone via IMEI, but I've never heard of that.
someone in the office asked me the question and i geniunely didn't know the answer
Had your phone stolen? =/
Oh, your work office, not the police office. Phew.
The fact of the matter is that if the Wi-Fi or cellular link remains active, it's evidence that can be used against them.
Wait a sec, no 3G because no SIM. But I assume it cabn phone perfectly without SIM
IN fact, it has to. Without SIM it must be able to dail 211
Or 911 of in USA, or whatever $local emergency number is
15:42
999
112
So without SIM it will still contact the phone number.
They'd put the phone into airplane mode to disable all network links right away.
Sorry, 112.
Never called it. And I have trouble remembering it after the change from 06 11 (the old emergency number)
Airplane mode does not require authentication to enable.
@bwDraco that assumes they have bypassed the lock screen
15:43
So they then have an ipod (apple or other brand)
But never can use voice or data
And if apple, best never connect it to a PC/MAc with intunes
Makes it mostly worstless
@bwDraco interesting...
Not too sure with iOS.
@Hennes Yes. Without a SIM card, the only thing it can do is call the local police number. Nothing else. Period.
!!tell 32642187 no
And with SIM it can communicate its IMEI.
Hmm, I guess without it might also be able to communicate it.
15:48
qwertyuiop/qasdfdsaq/cat/dog/thing would be all over this
@Burgi They're a fan of... mobile tracking?
Oh actually they are. The whole mobile geolocation map thing etc
they take holiday snaps of cell towers....
feck, i haven't been filling out my timesheets
Mah, time sheet mean getting paid after 2 months time.
I prefer salary
15:58
i am salaried
its so they know how much to charge our clients
16:14
I just got my pay for a week in June
I miss being salaried
16:44
the system we use for timesheets is awful
Yeah, some payroll systems can be really slow.
My job happens to be extremely fast at issuing paychecks, taking a mere four days after the end of each pay period.
Not everyone is so lucky.
It's just a part-time job, though, as I've said before.
Bob
Bob
what, literal paper cheques?
Oddly, direct deposit is not an option at my current employer.
Bob
Bob
I haven't seen a cheque in over a decade
apparently Americans still like em
17:02
I did not think they still existed.
Invalid since, what, 20 years?
Folks here are still using cheques but automatic, electronic payments are gradually becoming the norm.
!!/wiki Check 21 Act
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (or Check 21 Act) is a United States federal law, Pub.L. 108–100, that was enacted on October 28, 2003 by the 108th U.S. Congress. The Check 21 Act took effect one year later on October 28, 2004. The law allows the recipient of the original paper check to create a digital version of the original check, a process known as check truncation, into an electronic format called a "substitute check", thereby eliminating the need for further handling of the physical document. In essence, the recipient bank no longer returns the paper check, but effectively e-mails...
@Hennes I got one last year from the taxman in the UK. I had to ask my bank for a special paying in book as I have an internet only bank account.
These days, you could just take a picture of the check with your phone to deposit it electronically...
!!/wiki Remote deposit
Remote deposit refers to the ability to deposit a check into a bank account from a remote location, such as an office or home, without having to physically deliver the check to the bank. This is typically accomplished by scanning a digital image of a check into a computer, then transmitting that image to the bank, a practice that became legal in the United States in 2004 when the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (or Check 21 Act) took effect. This service is typically used by businesses, though a remote deposit application for consumers has been developed and has begun to be implemented...
17:14
@ChatBotJohnCavil terrible idea
that can be abused so much...
An example of a pure online bank here in the US that does remote, mobile check deposit: synchronybank.com/banking/resource-center/mobile-banking
@DavidPostill what bank?
at hsbc theres always paying in slip u can fill out
@djsmiley2k First Direct. It doesn't have physical banks. They gave me a paying in book which I could use in the Post Office to send them the cheque.
hmmmmmm i think u can use the hsbc ones
As a first direct customer you can pay in cash and cheques free of charge at HSBC .
@arda Yeah, and it's being touted as the latest greatest thing by all the oh-so-modern banks [/sarcasm] here and their apps.

nice issuer
@djsmiley2k Is it better or worse than here? Almost all our certificates are sel-issued. +_+"
Great way to train all users to "just always click allow and it will work"
17:43
Come on, PositiveSSL is really cheap.
Heck, Let's Encrypt will do it for anything not particularly sensitive.
Let's Encrypt is slowly being adopted. Slooooooooowly.
The behemoth size of government institutions is a big obstacle.
There's about 70k persons just where I work.
To check on my paycheck and employee info, I need to login into a portal used by multiple institutions, some this size or bigger.
I get about seven self-issued certificate warnings for this site.
@djsmiley2k It's free at the Post Office as well. They are just up the the street. The nearest HSBC is a bus ride (4 miles).
18:06
OH MY GOD NO
I just accidentally sent a mail to the univ with it ending "Arda Ozkal, uwu king". Self note, joking around in a serious mail and not checking it before sending is a bad idea
uwu king?
uwu is smug anime face
like this
just realized I forgot syncing thanks outlook
I hate hate hate using C-x C-c to exit emacs. I just fat-fingered that key combo again, so I was inspired to post that. Every time, I'm thankful I reconfigured Emacs this way :P
18:28
@arda This always confused me!
But yeah, remapping C-x C-c to do nothing has saved me so many times.
They're quite fond of boxes. (photo caption: "Inside the box inside the box inside the box are three smaller boxes with various cables and such.")
I have an Oculus Rift, and use it a lot (mostly for Elite Dangerous right now). Looking forward to the touch controllers coming out. I may get the PS VR though for my PS4 if there's any good games for it.
18:53
@BenRichards is it as raw, buggy, demanding, and laggy as everyone says it is?
@allquicatic I never heard anything like that. It works great. Very rare that it has any hiccups. I regularly use it for 3-4 hour long sessions.
If people have problems with it, it's probably because their computer doesn't meet the Oculus recommended minimum spec or they turned the graphics up too high. Elite Dangerous has a "VR Low" and "VR High" preset for the graphics. If I don't deviate far from VR High, it's silky smooth and wonderful. If I turn everything up all the way, it's fine on the monitor, but doing so in the headset drops the apparent framerate.
The drop in framerate only affects in-game animations, though, and not head tracking.
The Rift software is very, very good at making sure that head motion is tracked without lag, no matter what graphics settings. It seems it projects your view onto a space in your field of view, and if you turn your head too fast to update, you just see empty space slowly filling in with in-game graphics.
But I only ever have that happen when I have the graphics turned waay up past VR High in Elite Dangerous
19:10
5 hours ago, by Burgi
someone's mobile has stolen the DHCP address of a desk phone
that resally shouldn't happen
Also, for VR.... I wear glasses
I do too. It's slightly annoying with the Oculus Rift but once you get used to how to put it on and take it off, you can wear glasses inside it without many issues.
k cool
My main problem with the Rift headset is that I have longish hair and if I don't push it out of the way properly before putting it on, I get hair in my eyes, which both itches and distracts :P
That, and if I'm at all sweaty when I put it on, the lenses fog up. But a desk fan in my face also fixes that problem :P
I just want bionic eyes
with zoom functions, IR infraspectromy, etc etc and a VR plugin
19:34
AR is awesome too
hi @Bob thanks. It was the card reader that was ko and the card too that was ko. piece of sh** both. Just spent 2 weeks on the stuff.
anyway ranting aside, thanks for your help
20:28
i've spent all evening trying to get my parents familiarized with smartphones
Just heard from my niece who has started at Manchester Uni - 2 rapes, 1 overdose and 1 suicide in the first week ... :/
yeah its all over the news
that said university is a very stressful and lonely time
well i found it lonely
21:11
same kinda
tho depression and social anxiety really didn't help
tho by the point i made it to uni, i'd already decided i wasn't ever going to let the world win
hey guys what is the white thingie doing on a full side SD card
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Can you post an image or describe it a little better?
lol whoops
wikiedia will probably tell me or duckduckgo
lock lock lock
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I still don't understand. You are asking about the lock?
21:27
I think I'll tell you after going back to sleep
<shrug>
In other news, Windows 10's Windows Defender suddenly decided to start recognizing one of my programs as a virus and therefore removed all copies of it from my computer -_-
I only knew about this because Dropbox poked me saying I had recently deleted a bunch of files
oh. my friend's windows 10 computer had some file "corruption" as well. a bunch of his pictures are meshed together, half of one picture is across another picture, etc
I stole someoes sd card that has the lock broken off, she said it doesnt read cause the lock is gone
so im look hmm interersting why dont I take it and put it in an sd card reader, if it dont read ill pop off the top off my reader and see whats going on
21:50
ohh wikipedia says tahats a write protect lock thing
SO in that case maybe the absence of the lock is just confusing his reader?
wonder if I stick it in my video camera will it have a baby like malicious?
Say again?
I mean if it has malware on it will my video camera run shell hardware detection ;) and die
I would be very surprised if malware that worked on PCs also applied to your video camera
I'm not saying it's impossible that someone's developed an exploit for your camera, but it's highly unlikely
maybe when the malware realizes my camera doesnt have internt capacity it will decide it isnt worth the risk
My guess is that the malware would never even run; I don't know of any video camera that places code on the SD card
21:59
Thanks for your 2 nickels Ben :)
woops i just wiped out my imei number information from my efs partition on my phone.. gg
now my phone officially has no imei number
2
/me claps
oh well..
best part is i thought i had a backup of it
but recently hosed some of those on my sdcard cus of how much diskspace it was using
for each backup
22:23
oh thats possible?
WHAT if lets say I have a phone thats locked
and I change its IMEI to a phone thats UN locked
is it unlocked? :)
come on we're super users here. we should know all this!
define "locked" first? locked to a specific carrier? beloted trash locked into the firmware? Still under contract because it isnt fully paid for yet?
that would be super illegal even for me to comment. :)
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere: fineeeee, read up on nv_data.bin
But yeah, you probably could..
You'd need root on the phone though.
23:25
@GuitarShoeDave I know some drugdealers persons who would pay a lot for a phone like that
