Hello!
Hi
Yay, robotics!
yay. Almost through the first season of b5
Warning: extremely annoying notification sound
08:29
@Rahul2001 THANKS
time for fun
lol
It changed, though
It told me to download flash
good
more stuff to download
08:45
my vm hanged

cryptolocker?
haha install started and windows defender went crazy
I feel like Joel at this point: youtube.com/watch?v=Gh0bczrw4NU (contains profanity)

VPN Land, Infinity VPN, Windscribe VPN etc. is their life subscription pricing real? deals.inetinteractive.com/search?cat=390&query=VPN
Pay once and use entire life? How can they exist this way? Do they pay their staff out of their own pocket?
13:38
@Boris_yo What's a "staff" on VPN provider?
@Boris_yo it's for the lifetime of the company, clearly.
What's faster/better? Samba share or ftps? Will use to store and download files
Hmm. Samba I think.
Local?
@JourneymanGeek remote
Will add password in case of samba tho
superuser.com/questions/183548/… hmm, streaming files might help. Will probably go with samba.
I'd prefer sftp
13:51
got samba working
14:42
totally did that 15 years ago :)
but def is cool when you get it working the very first time
15:05
Lol. Samba takes like three commands to get working...
Hi, where could I get some help with systemd?
The internet!
gross systemd
:)
@LukeMoll "some help" is not really specific
I've tried, my google-fu is tiring, looking for a human/chat room
15:06
@LukeMoll eh, we encourage people to ask questions on the site
rather than relying on chat
I've not really dived into systemd myself yet
its garbage
:/ no offense
@GuitarShoeDave all the mainstream distros are using it tho
@JourneymanGeek I've asked one :) having only discovered SE chat recently wondered if someone online could walk me through a problem
well i once spent 30 hours of my life building an os from scratch with toolchains and all
usb bootable os
and i thought it would be a great idea to use systemd with it
HOLY CRAP was it bad
@LukeMoll pretty much every chatroom has its own way of doing things.
15:09
@JourneymanGeek fair enough
it ran like 300x slower due to journald
@GuitarShoeDave 300x slower than systemv?
(You'd get a much less polite response in some other rooms) ;p
@GuitarShoeDave seems a bit hyperbolic
yes 300x slower than systemv initd
I've not really had major performance issueswith systemd 0_0
15:10
@JourneymanGeek try making flash drive bootable os
yeah, true
I run my linux install on a pretty shitty, no name ssd
Hoping to spend a bit more time with my Wacom tablet. Due to limited desk space, I've had to disconnect my mech keyboard.
ah
I was a bit confused before the correction
Not sure if I even have enough USB ports left (and hubs add latency).
what mech have you got?
@LukeMoll you're going to notice a lot of us are hardware snobs ;p
It's my first and only mechanical keyboard. Went out of my way to preorder it from Newegg.
(ranted, I tend to prefer razer hardware myself. I've had a old model black widow ultimate for years ;) )
haha should I mention I run Ubuntu 16.04 on an old Mac mini?
!!therethere
@LukeMoll I run fedora 24 on a beebox ;p
@bwDraco the css for that page just loaded, ooh that's pretty
(moved my Firefox window to my HP U160 DisplayLink USB monitor. The color's atrocious compared to my laptop's color-calibrated, wide-gamut display).
(and a full desktop, and 2 UHD monitors...)
I've got a corsair k65 (non-RGB) myself, Cherry, TKL and looks alright was all i cared about
15:16
@ChatBotJohnCavil That cat's having none of it
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ I distintly recall the cat was bothering the dog first ;p
@JourneymanGeek are you running the desktop on the beebox? the mac's a headless server bc my Pi went funny
@LukeMoll I use it for long running tasks, including my torrent client.
My main desktop is windows 10, full ATX ;)
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ imgur.com/gallery/c2YDP
@JourneymanGeek I think mine is a micro-ATX mobo in a mid tower case, looks a bit ridiculous
15:20
@LukeMoll I actually considered that
I like having spare space to work
I tried filtering for only ATX boards but there were none in my price bracket with the featureset i wanted (didn't need >1 PCI, USB 3, intel gen3)
ahh, I didn't care about too many PCI slots
My current desktop is ivy bridge
finally a good article
@LukeMoll ^
would have been nice to read all of that in nov last year
@GuitarShoeDave yeah i bet :D
15:43
@JourneymanGeek In this case I am not confident in company's long-term stability.
This just reminds of one town in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Forgot the name of town...
medieval architecture is cool
16:01
Yes it is.
there has been a dog barking non-stop for an hour
its starting to sound hoarse
What do you guys recommend as far as backup methods
for what device?
desktops or servers?
why are you backing up individual desktops?
Or are you saying they should all be backed up to a server?
USB car chargers test. Everyone seems to overlook them...
16:11
personally i would set up folder redirection and then everything a user thinks they save to "my documents" is actually mirrored to the server
I have a decent one (Lenmar) which I carry with me. Seems to tolerate wider voltage ranges better than a cheaper unit I have.
If I drive 20V input (power tool battery) into the cheap generic car charger, it overheats very quickly under load and the USB output voltage falls out of spec, dropping below 4V in the extreme case. The Lenmar has no such problem.
you then either back up the server to tape or USB HDD on whatever schedule you like
It feels both scary and weird when there's no blood in your head.
o.O
16:15
hi
So, your thoughts on USB car chargers?
@CattyMcCatFace If there was no blood in your head you would be unconscious at best and dead at worst.
@bwDraco i bought one years ago and its still working fine
it cost me about £5 from a local phone shop

Mine looks like this:
Bob
Bob
@allquicatic Hm?
Some minor rain and tropical storm-force wind gusts are buffeting the extreme southern and eastern reaches of my state right now, but they're forecasted to completely miss me... basically, Hurricane Hermine swiped near me, but it's now disintegrating into basically a thunderstorm, and it's not even going to hit me
furthermore, the storm is moving northeast, which is away from me
So really you dodged a thunderstorm, not a bullet.
Tbh a bullet would probably have done less damage.
16:23
I carry this with me: anker.com/products/A1271011
A rain of bullets however....
20.1 Ah, 74 Wh.
@CattyMcCatFace I mean, if the entire tropical storm came directly over us, it would probably throw our lawn chairs all over the place, tear off tree branches, etc.
Hmm. I smell sock puppets.

@allquicatic uhh... no? :P
I did mention to him that I probably wouldn't be there at around <time>
@allquicatic you guys have scary storms :(
@allquicatic did you get that update thing sorted?
@Bob no, but the person who was working through that hasn't been around
16:41
What's the risk of backing this?
Bob
Bob
losing the money you backed it with
The question is "how high is the risk?"
At this point, it seems like the risk is quite low, but I'm not sure whether to proceed here.
@Bob or it lethally exploding
Bob
Bob
or that
This may be the first crowdfunded project I'm backing. Do I proceed?

16:46
@allquicatic wat
So I legitimately feel bad for this guy - he's clearly completely clueless and is being exploited by slightly more clueful / devious scammers who shovel these people in there
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ That's the max supported clock.
@Bob by the end of the video it's revealed that this specific tech support scammer was running a domain controller on the box he was using to do the scamming, and the scammee / "victim" got him to set syskey and bios passwords on that domain controller
...thus preventing anyone else from logging into their scamming boxes :D
@allquicatic own computer? Supervisor's computer
5:10
Bob
Bob
16:52
@allquicatic ... ... ... I mean... how?!
Bob
Bob
How does someone supposedly new get access to the DC?
@Bob I think it started out by the "victim" asking the guy to walk through the steps for him and tell him exactly what the screens on Syskey say, then he made him set a password somehow with a clever Jedi mind trick :P
then the roles reversed and the guy willingly set a BIOS and hard drive password
I guess he got access to the DC box because they didn't have any other place to put him?
these guys wouldn't have the OpSec discipline to hide away the server in another room (or the money, really), so they probably just use their infrastructure as desktops
Bob
Bob
16:54
@allquicatic Why do they even have a DC? :P
In fact... you can't even log in to a DC unless you're a domain admin.
That's reconfigurable though
(and by default it also lets in members of several other groups, but that's a nitpick)
@Bob it's not hard to imagine this guy sitting down for the first day on the job, then his boss logging into the system for him and telling him to call these numbers and read this script
Bob
Bob
@BenN Eh, not normal users :P
if all the other boxes were full up, well...
Bob
Bob
It also wasn't particularly easy to reconfigure last time I tried.
16:55
I would guess they have a domain so they can push out GP stuff
Bob
Bob
Like, you pretty much have to drag it kicking and screaming.
Bob
Bob
(yea, I know there's a group policy for allowed accounts)
> now no computers work
Bob
Bob
@allquicatic Ah, yea...
16:57
I'm of the opinion that this is cruelty. The scammer may be doing wrong, but now we have another person on the streets...
It's debatable. The reverse-scammer stopped the scam operations for at least a little while, protecting gullible people probably
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Substitute scammer for, say... cartel member.
@bwDraco two wrongs don't make a right; if the only job they can get is as a call center scammer illegally stealing peoples' money and information, and there's literally no other job available, then they're better off on the streets, honestly
Obviously it would be better to let actual legally authorized authorities handle it
I have no pity for people who get owned when they are trying to steal something from someone else.
16:58
Sure, but I have serious concerns about the ethics behind this.
There's no due process here.
Maybe it will make them think twice about scamming in future.
Now that they see how it feels
Jun 19 at 3:56, by bwDraco
I got myself in big trouble today by intentionally giving a street performer far more money than is necessary (folks were giving $1-3 typical, I put in $20).
The web is still very much a wild-west as far as the law is concerned
I've had a history of being gullible.
how'd you get in trouble?
17:00
See context.
@bwDraco that's because many countries (India is hardly unique in this regard) willfully turn a blind eye to businesses whose whole operating principle is to defraud others; as long as it looks like a fairly ordinary office building from the outside, they don't care what goes on inside
that, and they don't have enough manpower and political will within government to actually find and shut these businesses down
@allquicatic I wouldn't say it's willful; it's more like the government is underfunded.
I wonder if the US government is doing anything about international scammers
Not really our jurisdiction . . .
You're probably right. The scammers are defrauding US citizens though, so it might be a tricky question?
17:02
user education is just as important as stopping the scammers... over time, the scammers will get better at appearing legitimate, and users will get slightly more wary of blind calls and suspicious emails and pop-ups
yeah, that certainly makes it a bit of a grey area
@allquicatic indeed, some (most) of these people just shouldn't be falling for
it's a cat and mouse game that will ultimately end with Indians learning to speak perfect American English without a hint of an accent and using zero-day exploits to immediately root peoples' systems as soon as they visit their website, plus very sophisticated VM detection countermeasures that end the call if the "victim" is running a VM (because all these counter-scammers do)
well, any of them that don't end up getting that sophisticated will have less and less effectiveness over time as cultural awareness increases
Hopefully, poor societies like India will move away from this as their economic status improves.
India's GDP per capita has improved dramatically over the last decade, but it's still very low.
Cybersecurity is a growing concern both in the military, but also in the private/business sector. I just wish people took the time to learn a few ways to avoid the most obvious/crude attacks
17:06
it's challenging to give a good life and a good job to as many people as we have in the US with as many resources as we have here; it must be unbelievably difficult to impossible to give a good life and a good job to many millions more people, in a much smaller area, with way less resources
yesterday, by bwDraco
Start here for a discussion on how India is a booming technology country: http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118?m=32017575#32017575
@bwDraco Indeed. Always wondered if improvement was a cause or an effect of diversification and all that
@allquicatic yeah
unfortunately, there will always be tens of millions of homeless extremely poor people in the US, and, like hundreds of millions of extremely poor people in India -_- even if they end up gainfully employing ten times as many people as we do
I've always wanted to give back, even with whatever little cash I have.
These days, when it comes to allowance systems for children, I'm seeing lots of recommendations to earmark at least 10% for charity.
Even though I'm still under an allowance system (and will continue to be paid allowance until I make enough money to support myself—the photography job is not enough), I budget about $100 a year for charity.
I've been looking for more and better ways to support folks living on the streets. I now routinely drop quarters to folks who are just sitting there on a sidewalk.
I personally like and donate to Child's Play. Basically, you help children in hospitals have fun by playing video games, helping them get through rough times.
17:13
It sucks for these people to get barely enough money to buy food.
No shelter, little leeway for even clothing.
I mean, there are more important problems in the world, like hunger, homelessness etc, but imo even though this is not that important, it still deserves donations.
Homeless shelters here in New York are actually worse than just living on the streets.
I actually started six years ago by giving to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. About half their money comes from individual donations, last time I checked.
@CanadianLuke Sorry, I had to go offline yesterday... Maybe the next time you're free?

Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire, also known as Cossacks of Saporog Are Drafting a Manifesto (Russian: Запорожцы пишут письмо турецкому султану), is a painting by Russian artist Ilya Repin. The 2.03 m (6 foot 7 inch) by 3.58 m (11 foot 9 inch) canvas was started in 1880 and finished in 1891. Repin recorded the years of work along the lower edge of the canvas. Alexander III bought the painting for 35,000 rubles, at the time the greatest sum ever paid for a Russian painting. Since then, the canvas has been exhibited in the State Russian Museum in Sai...

Bob
Bob
@arda heh, he walked right into that one...
@bwDraco ok, I'll continue to be completely honest with you. Donate because you want to help, talk about it when asked. This sounds a bit like bragging (and I personally dgaf but some might think that it is annoying).
Indians working at call centers get paid hardly anything, and they are very poor, so they don't always see taking from the rich as wrong...
My apologies to anyone offended here.
Let me know if there is a tradition or something, but if you are poor, you don't get married. Or at least have children.
17:30
So what are my options to make my dollar go farther in helping homeless people?
@arda No, you get married and have children, so more members of the family can work for income... At least, that's what happens here
@bwDraco donate to homeless shelters.
@arda Yes, we call them "homeless shelters".

Q: What does decreasing exponential growth of resource consumption look like?

allquicaticIn Prof. Al Bartlett's famous lecture, Arithmetic, Population and Energy (this one was given in the year 2001), he explains the arithmetic of exponential growth of resource consumption and population growth. However, in several moments during the lecture, he admits that growth rates have fallen ...

TL;DR: plain steady exponential growth doesn't continue, in actual natural processes; it gets so far then drops off a cliff. So what does that "steady decrease in the growth factor" look like?
