is it using FP64? you might benefit from a Tesla or a Radeon instead
I currently have no job
therefore no money to buy a different gpu
therefore, poop.
er...
oh, okay, I had been assuming (wrongly, I guess) that anyone doing something like that would be doing it in a professional context
I'm actually working on launching my new album, which, hopeeeeefully I can sell a few copies of
and THEN
I might be able to eat! \o/
but hey, look on the bright side; a Radeon has a significant FP64 boost over even a GTX 1080, and the RX480 isn't that expensive (nor is a R9 290X)
@electronbeam please don't starve meanwhile :|
Might be a bit late for that
21:04
also. all that waifu-scanning you been doing? NO! THEY'RE MINE! *steals them all*
It's really fun to get recruiters not call you back after you tell them you're a woman.
*scolds* Wait your turn! Higher chat-rep (# of chat lines submitted) gets priority! So, one for JMG or Bob first (can't recall who's got more chat lines), then the other, then me, then ... , then you ;p *poke*
@electronbeam ... :'(
My resume gets tons of calls since it just has my first initial, and then when they find out I'm a girl..... no more calls.
how is that even not discrimination?!
@electronbeam you're fairly certain that's the reason?
Conjecture, approximation 85%
21:06
....'cuz
it's around 50/50 genderness split where I work, and I happen to know that women are extremely employable and useful in tech
I'm extremely employable -_-
maybe I just work for one of the few employers that doesn't discriminate on gender?
Damn. If you lived near here and/or had a INITIALS/I/CANT/USE/WITHOUT/TRIGGERING/TLAs mlearance, I'd be able to get you in, and get a $10k bonus for mahself
they are goin' crazy looking for people with IN/ITIALS
Pretty sure I don't have that one or the skills to work in your crazy thing
but if you wish, we can chat about it in private.
21:09
you know how to diagnose problems, right?
that's 99% of it - have enough grey matter to troubleshoot shit
6 years of service desk experience, I'd hope so
the rest comes from on the job learning
in fact, using your grey matter to diagnose shit makes you some kind of cult folk hero around the office
any options for telecommuting?
21:10
"OMG!!! This person used critical thinking and my software magically works!!!"
IN/ITI ALS makes Lim[telecommuting probability] ~ 0
more like, get locked in a vault all day where you get patted down randomly on entry/exit
Woohoo! Finally found the elusive >150Mbps 4G+ transmitter!
Yeah but then I'd have to relocate AGAIN -_-
Now that's carrier aggregation. @Bob.
@electronbeam but on the upside you'd get random pat-downs. hr-hr ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
maybe from a lady segurity guard
sound like an oppressive and patently un-fun situation, that would have been the situation at CSC and that would drive me fracking crazy
21:14
meh. you get to have fun outside the vault where you have a cubicle/ledge/desk/solitary confinement hole where you have a computer with relatively unrestricted 'net access once you OpenVPN to your dedi
generally only have to spend part time in the vault being oppressed
@electronbeam Yeah well, I can do that too on WiFi.
> VERIZON FIOS
*finger* GDI. Envy. >:(
lol
note to self: Find somewhere to live that has CityFibre gigabit FTTP
I have FTTP :3
gigabit service is coming soon, too
Verizon missed a "T" and gave me FTP instead of FTTP. :( I can now FTP into their servers and download at ADSL speeds, yay me
4
@electronbeam do you feel the heat?
that heat is coming from a nuclear explosion originating at my present location
21:16
Well fios in our area was acquired by frontier so it got slightly shittier
yes, it's several tens of megatons to reach you from here
you should go ahead and de-unfriend me on skype
I think VZW added another antenna to their MIMO solution recently so now I could theoretically get 3x3, but my Jetpack AC791L doesn't support it anyway, and my iPhone is restricted to 5 Mbps by the MVNO agreement
@electronbeam how would I go about doing that? I didn't know Skype supported "Undo" friend defriending across operating system and months
I ADDED YOU BACK
JUST
ADD ME
and the chances of me accidentally undoing blocking some random number ...
Give me a fifth, please
21:19
request sent
spam sent
or use soemthing encrypted
which one are you?
Telegram isn't secure unless you exchange keys out of band btw
I can't like... reveal my skype in chat
*accepts a friend request from Skype Call Test Service* there, that must be you
21:20
I'll give you a hint
<----------
rhymes with selectron meme?
all of my skype usernames are some permutation of that
Yes.
I still can't find it; are you sure you added the right person?
are you not getting my messages? lol
ok, I just launched Insecuregram
maybe use that in the interim
one sec, updating
ack, shouldn't have said that; now the TLAs can inject their own compromised update
21:23
Oh hey, the whole city is already wired up for ShittyFibre
Except it isn't
Supposedly every phase is now completed (as of May 2016) yet I'm still seeing road closures to build out the CityFibre network this month so clearly that's a lie

Hi there, I ran into this problem today, social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/… , I ended up booting into another OS to delete C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup , which fixed the problem, do you guys think this would be a good candidate for a self answered question?
@allquicatic: Were you the one who had that square-ish Corsair Carbide case?
35 exploded Note 7's, out of 400,000 sold. All this fuss over a 0.01% failure rate?
35 more than what should have happened
21:38
@PotatoCat yar!
the 240.
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse You'd be the luckiest man alive if you sold 400,000 hard drives and only 35 failed.
@PotatoCat disagreed.
@jrh if you can explain in detail the problem you were having and how you fixed it, and it turns out not to be specific to something you (intentionally) did, sure
I'd be glad if I sold 400 HDDs (and kept the money)
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse Regardless. Most consumer electronics typically have failure rates between 1-5%
21:40
Last week I bought a lightbulb and it came in the wrong color.
For 4 days my living room had a yellowish tone
My lightbulbs come in every colour.
Both batteries and hard drives are expected to die, however batteries are not expected to have the "explode-die", but "can't charge-die" and not just a year after release.
But at least it didn't explode :p
I explodified one. Well, I smashed it. Being a LED bulb, it really made no difference and works fine anyway
@PotatoCat Even when you're sober?
21:41
@PotatoCat are you still Woof. I'm a cat.?
@allquicatic I am now a Woof, I'm a cat on a potato.
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse Yes
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse I can also control the colour by talking to my hand
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse Barbecued cat? How cruel! :)
Where is the baked potato?
@DavidPostill Google "churrasquinho de Gato" ;)
Here we joke all meat sticks sold on the sidewalk are cat meat.
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse ah ha!
21:51
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse Hmm. I don't remember seeing that when I was in BR
I've figured out how you do it
jrh
jrh
@allquicatic as far as I know I didn't do anything to cause the issue, I never messed with permissions on the event log directory, it pretty much just mysteriously stopped working a couple weeks back, I suspect may have been indirectly caused by a Windows Update?
Changing your name between guy, gato and horse all the time. I know your secret.
@DavidPostill That's because you are a gringo and everybody was eager to sell you overpriced fancy stuff. Cat BBQ is for a true local experience
21:54
@PotatoCat Oh no! You've found out I'm actually Jeff Atwood!
jrh
jrh
I mostly want to post this because the MSDN article's kind of a mess, a lot of "did this work? no? try this..." and stuff that seems to only get you about halfway there until you scroll down 3 or 4 screens
e.g., "just delete the directory"... well, you can't... not if the OS is running
@jrh well, write it up and it should be fine if you include detailed steps, etc...
22:16
... there is no way this will turn into a shitstorm, right:
We will also be removing Douglas Crockford from our keynote speakers list to help make the conference a comfortable environment for all.
Wait, what did he do?
I am still not sure
some heard him saying, that some talks in conferences are stupid
Oh, I found this article, not sure how widely held that viewpoint is
22:29
*sigh*
Photography is such a huge money sink :\
broke a lens?
No, but the cost of the sort of equipment that the pros is absurdly high
I'm a sports photographer by trade but I really want to get into serious bird photography. I've been reading digitalbirdphotography.com and while I have some of the equipment needed, it's not enough.
well .. that makes it an exclusive hobby
I selected a rather oddball system, Pentax K, which isn't really recommended by the author of that online book. While they do have more lens choices for wildlife these days, it isn't really at the same level as Canon or Nikon.
I have a Pentax K-3 II and a pro-grade telephoto zoom (DA* 60-250mm) but it's just not enough reach. The next purchase on my mind is the Pentax 1.4x teleconverter ($600), followed by the D FA 150-450mm super-telephoto zoom lens ($2500).
I also need a tripod and Arca-Swiss head (and plates).
I've considered switching several times, but the cost of comparable equipment on Canon EOS is presently beyond my means.
Besides, I've been shooting Pentax for almost six years and I'm just used to the Pentax way of doing things.
I've captured images of a Great Egret in flight once (with an older camera body, a Pentax K-5), but I've been constantly bumping against the limits of my gear.

- Replace DA* 60-250mm lens.
- Get a wide-angle lens.
- Get a longer telephoto lens (D FA 150-450mm).
- Get more prime lenses.
- Get a teleconverter.
- Get ND and polarizer filters.
- Replace flashgun (mine has a broken battery access door).
- Get larger, faster memory cards.
- Get a tripod and a Arca-Swiss head to go along with it.
- Get the upcoming Pentax full-frame body when it comes out.
- Get another camera body as a backup.
- Build new PC with fast CPU and lots of RAM for photo editing.
- Purchase an Adobe Creative Cloud membership.
(click through for the complete list)
I've acquired a larger memory card and color calibration hardware, and got my DA* 60-250mm replaced since, but that should get you a sense of what I want to get.
I also need a gimbal head for the tripod.
Anyway, going to be AFK for a bit as I go home. See ya in a bit.

> we had a small exchange [in the backstage] - “the talks as the day went on just got stupider and stupider.” He said. “mmm.” I replied
Wait, is that all?
Pretty much. There's also these, which don't seem offensive at all to me:
> He said that weak maps was one of his favourite new features and said that he was worried that programmers would overlook it because the name didn't seem very masculine, probably jokingly.
> Crockford refers to the old web model as promiscuous and his proposed model as commitment. By placing promiscuity in a negative light, Crockford slut shamed the audience.
...and that's it, in my understanding
Further open-source-related drama (linked in the Reddit thread): Exhibit A, Exhibit B
I have no patience for that...
23:24
hey guys, got a question about a build I'm getting ready to start ordering hardware for. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/9KLTnn
I'm going to be using it for 3d graphics/video editing/gaming, using applications like Blender/Maya, Substance Painter/Quixel, After Effects, etc. I will probably be getting at least 2-way SLI within a few months, just don't want to break the bank too badly in one go. Any thoughts, recommendations, etc?
23:34
Get the 6900K instead of the 5960X. Same socket, slightly higher price, but better performance.
good point, thanks for spotting that
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ go skylake
You've got two SSDs there. I assume the 950 PRO is the boot drive, but what's the 850 EVO doing there?
(that said I'm off to sleep)
@arda Skylake currently goes up to 4C/8T. There's a reason he's selected an 8C/16T HEDT processor.
23:42
@bwDraco Applications mostly, lots of texture accessing etc, I work with game engines a bit as well. I hate loading screens :P
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ I'd evaluate 2x 16 over 4x8. Pricier but you have room to go 32 gb
Polaris 10 in a laptop. That's pretty encouraging for AMD—plus it's a cheap GPU unlike the NVIDIA counterparts, making for a competitive high-performance mobile gaming solution that shouldn't break the bank.
@JourneymanGeek HEDT systems support quad-channel memory. His apps are probably memory-intensive.
