Evening all. I'm a longtime Stack Overflow user but am new to Super User. Quick question: is a question asking how to build a piece of software or an SDK from its source on-topic for Super User?
Its a bit vague. Specific issues during building might be. Expecting the whole process to be explained might be too broad
JAL
JAL
Hey @JourneymanGeek, thanks for the reply. It would be similar to my question over on retrocomputing: retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/q/1394/621 (which is at risk of getting closed over there)
I'm trying to build some old legacy software that had bundled executables for a different processor arch
I basically need to go and fetch all of the dependencies and build them from scratch
lol clippy
erf. Yeah, I think you'd have the same problem here
01:41
You're not contemplating cross-posting, are you? (Don't cross-post!)
JAL
JAL
I figured. Maybe if I get to a specific dependency I'm having trouble building. That would narrow down the issue
Its less a scope issue than a 'breadth' issue
JAL
JAL
No no, I was not planning on that
compilation issues are honestly probably better on Stack Overflow than Super User, IMO
though they're loosely on-topic here for sure
Now, if you're looking for a drop in alternative for a specific library maaaaaaaybe SR might work
JAL
JAL
01:42
Yeah it's tough, sometimes I feel like SO is better for the programming problems but folks are tempted to close stuff like that for SU over there
I think he just needs to run CentOS 4 in a VM :P

lol
or Windows. I'm really trying to build a legacy Game Boy development kit so I can build the newly open-sourced Infinity codebase github.com/infinity-gbc/infinity
would it work on wine? ;p
JAL
JAL
some of the tools might, half of them don't even build with a modern C compiler, so there's that to fix too lol
one of the assemblers they use in their toolchain only has a windows shareware build. a linux build existed at one point behind a paywall but the source, site, and company have long since dissolved
The Telemark Assembler: http://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/questions/1389/was-the-telemark-assembler-available-for-the-unix-or-mac-environments

I don't think there are even any posts about that on SO or SU
unless you fancy writing an assembler from scratch or wrapping the assembler in wine and hoping for the best, you probably should listen to the readme
> Currently the game only builds on a Windows host

@allquicatic Yep I'm well aware of that, hence my project and fork to build the game and tools on Unix/Mac

03:13
Or rewriting the asm bits in more modern asm dialects.
@JourneymanGeek Is the program so performance-sensitive that it absolutely needs assembly code?
03:28
beats me
or rewriting the ASM bits in a more modern, portable, high level language?
Mornin' all
@bwDraco ...it's a GameBoy game.
you could write it in VBScript and it'd run fine -- using WinForms as the GUI. On a 2009 Celeron.

Everyone reacts to the word "feminist" differently, so for the record, I'm not a feminist, I just believe in equal rights for everyone, irrespective of gender, gender identity, religion, race, color, ethnicity, culture, belief, origin, age, nationality, sexual orientation, disability or any other form of bias, for the simple reason, I am not an asshole...

Do you believe in equal rights for women?
                 Yes: You are a feminist

Egalitarianism by necessity would be a superset of feminism based on that interpretation
Bob

@Dog It should be.

A: Feminism being referred to as equality for all, as opposed to equality for women

WS2The earliest reference I can find to feminism is from 1841. At that time it referred to feminine quality or character. Examples of that use exist from 1841 to 1915. (OED sense 1) In the late 19th century the word begins to take on a new meaning with the emergence of the suffragette movement. Th...

Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers critical thinking and evidence (rationalism, empiricism) over acceptance of dogma or superstition. The meaning of the term humanism has fluctuated according to the successive intellectual movements which have identified with it. The term was coined by theologian Friedrich Niethammer at the beginning of the 19th century. Generally, however, humanism refers to a perspective that affirms some notion of human freedom and progress. In modern times...
Wait, no
The philosophy or life stance of secular humanism (alternatively known by some adherents as Humanism, specifically with a capital H to distinguish it from other forms of humanism) embraces human reason, ethics, social justice, and philosophical naturalism while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, pseudoscience, and superstition as the bases of morality and decision making. Secular humanism posits that human beings are capable of being ethical and moral without religion or a god. It does not, however, assume that humans are either inherently evil or innately good, nor does it...

For the fictional religion in the Honorverse see Church of Humanity Unchained Church of Humanity was a positivist church in England influenced and inspired by Auguste Comte's religion of humanity in France. It also had a branch or variant in New York City. Richard Congreve of the London Positivist Society was important to the founding of the English church in 1878. Despite being relatively small the church had several notable members and ex-members. For example, Anna Haycraft was raised in the "Church of Humanity...

Got a server with SSH access? Here's how to set up a SOCKS proxy for browsing on Android. Enable compression for the SSH connection in ConnectBot to reduce mobile data usage, especially when browsing with images disabled.
This is what I do when I'm really squeezed for data.
Bookmark this URL for quick access to the configuration: about:config?filter=network.proxy
Set network.proxy.type to 1 to enable the proxy and 5 to disable.
Add domains to network.proxy.no_proxies_on to exclude sites from using the proxy. I personally exclude Google because of the potential for CAPTCHAs and Wikipedia because they disallow the use of proxies for editing. Besides, they use HTTPS so there's little to be gained from proxying in the first place.
Sanity check:
I got to windows 7 Ultimate DVDs. One with 32bit version and one with a 64 bit version. I got one key which will work on either of them.
(and yes, I know I can only legally install one at the same time)
As far as I know this is the case for all non-OEM windows 7 ultimate setups.
Q: Am I right?
Mostly checking since superuser.com/questions/1116040/… seems to disagree
And I am considering a comment with 'You are wrong!"
This MS community thread says yes you can
The answer is by a forum moderator (though not an MSFT employee), so it's probably right
Thank you. Good to know I am not loosing it

@bwDraco if you have root
Then sshtunnel is easier
It uses redsocks under the hood and a bunch of iptables rules
I have root but would prefer to just use this workflow for the time being. I'm not looking to proxy everything.
Again, there are some things you don't want to run through a proxy.
