Hi everyone
Is there anyway to bypass the answer character limit? I tried to paste my script but it didn't allowed me
anyone around?
01:13
no, yes
@JourneymanGeek I can't get maven to work in this question
I will pay someone to set it up with teamviewer on my laptop
@William ahh. Might want to comment or ask a question based on why it isn't working, referencing the original
@William have you considered a bounty?
@JourneymanGeek i have tried so many different ideas I am going crazy
had a bounty didn't award it because I couldn't get any to work
do you have a paypal and now how to possible fix it?
wtf it doesn't let me edit the post
If I had a windows 7 box and the time and sufficient boredom (and I might have 2 of the 3 later this afternoon) I'll give it a shot. HOWEVER, I'm iffy about taking money for it and I'll post an answer on SU if I do.
are you on ubuntu then?
01:21
windows 10
getting a VM would be trivial tho
that is a great idea. I would update to W10 if I knew it would fix it but I don't think that would make a difference
although VM are slow
oh, for doing a test run
then I can go "I started with a clean system and installed X, Y and Z in this order and did this and this and this"

@JourneymanGeek I added a bounty superuser.com/questions/1079774/…

What's with the recent spate of people trying to pay for solutions o_O not really in the spirit of SE overall, nor is random teamviewer stuffs
Dismantled an old, broken IBM Deskstar 75GXP ("Deathstar") hard drive. 45GB, model DTLA 307-045.
Platters weren't scraped up or anything, oddly enough.

Finally got around to taking the whole thing apart down to the head magnets.

02:28
The outside of the drive was secured with Torx T8 screws—had to rummage through Father's tools to find a matching bit to chuck into my drill.
The platters were held down with a series of T6 screws.
Either head or media failure—not too sure precisely what went wrong.
The drive worked intermittently before it gave up altogether.
Not quite like this. Again, the coating was intact on the glass.
The platters are being recycled as glass products.

The Deskstar is the name of a product line of computer hard disk drives. It was originally announced by IBM in October 1994. The line was continued by Hitachi when in 2003 it bought IBM's hard disk drive division and renamed it Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. In 2012 Hitachi sold the division to Western Digital who rebranded it as HGST. The first Deskstar product produced by IBM was the DALA-3540; the last was the 180GXP HGST continued the product line after the acquisition, selling the Deskstar 120GXP and Deskstar 180GXP under the HGST brand for a short time and selling new models thereafter...

@bob cya
The newest version of Win10 refuses to see some drives, identifying them as RAW, and prompting for an NTFS reformat. It’s easy to accidentally reformat the drive.
This might have actually happened to me
06:50
it has occured here also all the way back to XP, where a partition not recognised by the system, instead of the system showing a state of confusion "WTF is this,I dont know what do do" , it tosses up the authoritative "lets go ahead and format it". Because i never believed any error that windows put up, i always decline.
That doesnt stop it from comming up and a person hitting enter because they were typing something.
is the requester really defaulted to destroy on an Enter?
Dog
Dog
!! Caaaaaaaaat
Dog
Dog
@Psycogeek I think the default option goes to the format disk dialog where the user has to press enter again and then confirm
ahh right, processes like that have final confirmations
Dog
Dog
I should hope so!
06:58
To be fair: The dialog stems from "right click->format"
Its a tough decision. Do you assume users know they want to format the disk or not? Having multiple confirmations boxes is the reason people complain about UAC...
I mean people hate UAC yet it literally is no different then typing sudo :$
I remember doing that with a corrupt floppy, windows did not see a Fat table (or whatver it is on the first few blocks), so it was time to start all over.
Perhaps people should just read dialog boxes before spamming the enter key?
:-)
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell ok, don't touch the GTX950 for a gaming build
How come?
Bob
Bob
It's approx on par with a GTX760
which was mid-range... three years ago
@HackToHell Basically, if you want to future-proof, you'll want to go for something better. But I don't know how much other cards cost there.
07:05
just never believe MS, that is simple. If it tells you you have a memory problem, check for a bad driver. if it tells you a new piece of hardware is failing, check for a driver. if it wipes out all your data with tiny imperceptable errors on copying , then check for ram (or ram timing) .
The day the machine knows what is wrong with itself, or even troubleshoots itself correctaly, is the Ultimate MS achievement, not Stupid web tiles :-)
Bob
Bob
If you can find a GTX950 for ~$140 (USD) then that's actually pretty good for the price. But $250? nahhhh
760 wasn't mid-range, it was below mid-range because the 770 was mid-range it was basically the 680/690
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound That makes it worse :P
770/760 used the same chip 780+ used the better chip
@bob - Happy to hear my suggestion worked ;-)
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound I normally count x70/x80 high, x60 mid, x50 low-mid, below x50 not worth looking at (vs iGPU)
07:06
I am shocked the 950 is similar to the 700 series though
Bob
Bob
950 isn't quite as bad as I first thought, but it's still not something one should be buying new in 2016, let alone for 250 USD.
@Ramhound If only you were here when I was trying to get onto the preview builds!
No; You shouldn't be buying it. Honestly with the performance delta between 900 and 1000 I wouldn't get any 900 series.
Well the preview builds would have been tricker. You would have still had to use the .ISO if one was released for Enterprise/Education I don't know if they were. In theory it will work in the future, and once your on that branch, you would stay on it
@Bob 950 average market sale price on e-bay ~$125 ebay.com/sch/…
How you would get out not sure. Easier on Pro/Home
Wait for the 1050/1060 if you want a good card for a good price
Seriously the 1000 series took a huge jump
all we have to do is wait till the 1000 peels itself off the ceiling in price too. (from jumping too high :-)
Right now both new GPUs are not available everywhere with 10+ on the shelf for anyone to lower the price. 6Months i percieve the prices will finnaly drop more than $100 on things like the 1080 and 1070
Bob
Bob
07:17
@Psycogeek yea but the one in @HackToHell's build is double that
1060 is exactly where the 770 when I bought it
The 1070/1080 seem a little high though
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound With preview, I think I should've been able to grab a standard preview ISO.
Didn't think of trying that at the time.
Thank god for MSDN downloads, though... much easier than trying to wrangle something sensible out of the MCT.
I suspect at some point
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound They are. I got the 1080... paid too much for it too :P
@Bob Okay, thanks
07:21
@Bob oh you got it? do a test for me, put a Wattmeter Kill-O-Watt , multimeter on the whole system somewhere. then run a lame ass game, that takes about 1/2 the effort for that GPU to run it in HD 1920 kind of res, and tell me about how much power it sucks when running at 1/2 rate. or half clock, or half cocked :-0
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek I need to get a kill-a-watt first :P
also I run 4k now, which is why I had to go all-out on the GPU -_-
Hm. I also don't have afterburner anymore
@Bob ahh just go out to your utility meter and count how many times it Spins
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek lol. my UPS gives me a rough measurement
includes the monitor though
close enough.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek wait, what's that about half the effort?
do you want me to run a gpu stress test at full and half clock?
something like furmark, or unigine?
I'm confused.
07:24
All I want to know is would it use about as much power as the 2 other new cards the AMD 480 and 1070 , doing something easy and simple.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek if you can give me a step-by-step of how you want the test run, I'll follow that
I'm kinda confused what exactly you want me to run :P
Man I love Amazon
@Bob might be cheaper offline
I have Mega Rolls, Dish Soap, Laundry Soap ( all of the largest size, name brands ), all three items had a coupon, and some other items all under $100 :$
GPU prices seem to be very high online, no idea why
Asked him to buy it offline
07:27
AMD's newer cards had to be patched to use less power :$
Couldn't find any AMD cards
Is there a GPU shortage or what :O
They used more then the PCI-E called for
take a Beast of a card, then test how much power total it gets up to when beating the heck out of it,, say with furmark for example. Then take that same beast and do something that only takes 1/2 the GPU load , a lame game with v-sync on, at only normal high res. Then see how much power it takes then.
TL;DR: If you lost, play what didn't come up next, If you won, play what they just played...
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek You're gonna have to give me a min, Afterburner is being funny
oh dammit I need 4.3.0 beta
07:33
The assumption is , doing the same WORK as a little card would do with the little card using less power, with the big card doing the same work , with a greater level of parrelleing . more transisters working together on a lite workload, at lesser clocks or even lower voltages.
Can a Beast Video card (of the new tech) use less power walking , than the lesser card does while running at top speed.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek Baseline is ~150W idle.
Fluctuating 143-148
137, 164... :P
Stress test, ~380W
ahh there we go
Bob
Bob
1280x720 windowed, AA off, ~190FPS
is this furmark?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek yea
I'm gonna throttle to 50% in Afterburner and check Furmark FPS again
fan on 100% for a min to cool it back down under 40 deg C before starting
@Psycogeek Capped at 50% TDP, ~260W total system power draw, ~120FPS.
~900-1000MHz GPU clock, 5005MHz mem clock (auto)
If I remove the power limit it goes up to 1620MHz GPU clock, 5005MHz mem clock
07:44
so 100 watts less to run it easy? which is about 110 watts for the gpu?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek ? yea it fluctuates but I'm looking at about 100-120W for the GPU at 50% TDP throttle (via Afterburner)
vrses just keeping a desktop drawn
Bob
Bob
And that does the Furmark 1280x720 windows without AA at about 120FPS.
@Psycogeek Yea, idle on desktop at 150W -- unfortunately I can't turn the GPU off to get a no-GPU figure.
"idle" being one 1080p60 display and one 2160p60 display with Firefox.
which should be negligible
@Psycogeek Also this is with a FE card.
Interesting that the listed TDP is supposedly 180W.
Hm. Possibly CPU usage. Lemme check.
most GPUs suck thier most power when working, so we could toss 10-25watts .
But we could work from the Top Down, like you did and then make assumptions about the Max power the GPU uses, from other sources to know what the top wattage is.
Bob
Bob
Yea Furmark uses a whole CPU core too.
i7-2600.
@Psycogeek Much easier to throttle the GPU than it is to find a game that has ~50% utilisation :P
@Psycogeek Single core Prime95 stress is 180W total.
Hm, Furmark might be using two cores.
07:51
ohh shoot forgot about the cpu also using more power when running the benchmark. But furmark does not use a lot of cpu. and we can know the % of cpu usage of furmark during the tests.
Bob
Bob
Ahhhh there we go. Prime95 two threads at 200W.
"If not, I believe Windows Insider is still free, no?" - This is what is wrong with places like Reddit. It is full of people who have no clue and just randomly say stuff.
Bob
Bob
That adds up.
380W Furmark 100% - 200W two CPU core = 180W from GPU under load.
180W is GTX 1080 TDP.
That is what is kinda cool , and much of the reason why specific benchmarks are chosen for analisis. they were the ones that did the best at concentrating on one hardware. furmark (gpu) and prime(cpu).
@Bob 1080 uses more than thier claims. it was all lies.
if the 1080 only ever used 180W it already would topple 1070 and 480 in Work/Watts ratios
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek What I find interesting is that Furmark sometimes uses one core and sometimes two.
Weird.
@Psycogeek Eh, normal for peak to exceed TDP, I suppose.
07:58
@Bob what was the cpu percentage for furmark when running the Full load testing?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek btw idle clocks fown to 139 MHz GPU and 405 MHz memory.
@Psycogeek Right now? 15%.
But it was 25% before... :S
@Bob so thats like 25 watts for haswell and skylake?
On my gig board (and asus) the MB software will actually tell the CPU wattage use and ram and the combined
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek Hm. I might be able to get that from HWiNFO.
gotta go grab a copy of that
I presume something like this question isn't on topic? It basically a software design question.

Bob
Bob
08:02
ooooh it shows actual GPU power too
@Psycogeek idle is 9.3W
Furmark is 180-182W
50% TDP throttle is 90W on the dot
@Bob thats crasy , and sweet
Bob
Bob
O_O it gives me UPS measurements too?!
@Psycogeek I think the important info for you is the 190 FPS and 120 FPS figures at full and half TDP.
Bob
Bob
Afterburner can go down to 50% or up to 120%.
Gig power, when running prime (OC) 4770 haswell
@Bob and you could also set the clocks too? like 800GPU and 2500Mem
Bob

@Psycogeek 50% TDP has more effect than any core clock change I can make.
@Psycogeek tbh I don't know what furmark figures for GTX 1070 are... does anyone have a 1070 here?
@Psycogeek I'm gonna be away for a bit, but I'll test with Unigine a bit later vs 1070 with the same settings and see what happens
that is so cool the software gave so much data even the UPS
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek It somehow gives more data than the UPS software!
Bob
Bob
Basically my Unigine test will be lowering TDP until it matches 1070 FPS at same settings
I'll do that later and ping you with the results
great
so now you have enough data for a whole blog post, or Tech artical, put it up somewhere and get someone to pay for it
First we need a really attracting title. Power Showdown , Can the 1080 run on 1 solar pannel :-)
