There isn't
Sad stuff. It's the prime disappointment in my Moto X Play. Not enough RAM to play a game (say, Hearthstone) and switch over to another app (say, Facebook Messenger) without having to drop the game
That and how I can't use SkyView without a gyroscope.
@JourneymanGeek What's your best estimation as to when the GTX 1060 will stop being out of stock?
@Ariane it varies with country
Also, it's funny how NVIDIA swore it would be different this time around but it's not at all.
Chances are I can find them locally soonish.
@Ariane Supporting project ara ;p
!!wiki project ara
02:11
Project Ara is the codename for an unnamed, upcoming modular smartphone that is made of a central module board with individual modules that can be connected. The platform will include a structural frame or endoskeleton that holds smartphone modules of the owner's choice, such as a display, camera or an extra battery. It would allow users to swap out malfunctioning modules or upgrade individual modules as innovations emerge, providing longer lifetime cycles for the handset, and potentially reducing electronic waste. Project Ara smartphone is scheduled to begin pilot testing in the United States...
I want to eat a live mouse
@cat what have you done to me
@ThatBrazilianGuy Yeah I initially wanted to get a phone from that, but it was taking way too long.
Modular computers could become a thing of the past.
The industry would love it.
@Ariane do you like listening to video game music
That would suck.
Also I wish laptops were more modular
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Somewhat. sometimes.
02:16
wow you're so interesting want to go for a walk together
That's slightly gross
omg xD
I need to stop or Ill get banned from here
Is it possible that my integrated graphics are doing a poor job of upscaling 720p video to 1080? I feel like it's pixelated instead of blurry like it used t obe.
uhm
if what you're viewing is less pixels than what you're viewing it in, it will get more pixelated
Im 19 am I younger thn you
I'm going to stop typing stuff goodnight everyone
You are. Also there are various ways of upscaling stuff. if it's done properly it should be blurred instead of pixelated
02:22
oh thats cool that would help emulating n64 games
I love this song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJZrmEEbFxo
Halo 3 title music
after 1 minute it gives me chills
once on the internet it's never deleted
Welp
02:39
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Not bad. I'm not much into slow music though
hmmm so you like
YES LOOKS LIKE UBUNTU WASNT MY PARTNER AFTERALL ITS DEBIAN THAT WAS MEANT FOR ME
Eh. So basically by changing my motherboard my Windows copy lost its licence. Am I going to need to reinstall Windows 8 and then 8.1 and then upgrade to Windows 10 all over again? That's a PAIN.
on elite singles I meet smart professionals
....OK.
uh did you buy an OEM windows?
once you use that once its locked to the hardware it was installed on and you can't re-use it
you mean windows was preinstalled with your old computer/
you shoulda just bought windows 7 for 40 bucks like I did
if your copy lost your liscense, I dont think you'll be able to activate it again after reinstalling on the new hardware
02:55
I have a Windows 8 DVD I got from the upgrade offer a long time ago. I think it's retail valid...?
it better be retail
hihi
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Please stop trying to hit on @Ariane. Or any other female on the channel. Its sad.
@JourneymanGeek That might get him to start hitting on males.
@Ariane then I'd just hit bite him.
Ow.
03:00
(with appropriate sanctions. Violence bad.)
This is my DVD
Do you think I'm going to be OK?
"Made in USA (Puerto Rico)
@Ariane ought to be fine.
I think you can upgrade from 8 directly
maybe?
there'smoe females?
Wasn't there a way to "upgrade" but get a clean install media? Because honestly having a chain of endless upgrades is beyond sad
@Ariane OH
You can try using your windows 8 key directly while installing
03:03
Installing what? I don't have a Windows 10 media
You can download windows 10 media or generate it from the upgrade tool thing.
er. I would if it loaded
but yea, the media creation tool would let you make an install USB for 'another system'
and you can use that
Ah. No need to reinstall. Just re-entering my Windows 8 key worked fine. Thankfully. I'll need to do a clean install eventually though. I don't remember what, but I remember there were some issues with my PC related to having upgraded Windows before it died.
how do I protect myself from females
bye
....bye
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere I'm not a big fan of having to say this - but I'd like an environment where people feel safe. There's right kinds of arkwardness here, and a tone we like to maintain, and... this isn't it. I'm suspending you for a day from chat. Please take the time to consider your actions today, and hopefully We'll see no more of this tommorrow.
2
@Ariane I'm sorry you had to put up with that. I read back on the transcript and it was kinda inappropriate. I'd have hoped the multiple RO warnings would have done the trick.
03:18
@JourneymanGeek Eh? No big deal. A slightly awkward person is a lot less than what I deal with regularly
Oy vey. Now we have a stalker on chat :/
@JourneymanGeek thanks for taking care of it.
!!/nothingtoseehere
@JourneymanGeek What are RO warnings?
Reviewed the transcript. That was creepy.
I thought I was the only one finding it creepy.
03:25
I was finding it awkward and innapropriate rather than creepy
I thought awkward and inappropriate and creepy were pretty much the same
27 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Please stop trying to hit on @Ariane. Or any other female on the channel. Its sad.
I think creepy is something that makes you scared and worried about your safety
But that whole situation was just... sad, that's more like it, yes
I think @Ariane handled it well
Oh, I was never worried, so creepy is not the right word, I guess.
Did I handle anything? XD
I'll be watching this more closely tomorrow night. Stack Exchange is not a matchmaking service and I'll make sure that this doesn't continue.
03:30
@ThatBrazilianGuy room owner.
Ugh there's this thing though. If I make a clean install of Windows, is the whole process of moving my user folder away from the OS disk going to be a pain again?
@Ariane would be the same as the last time.
Ugh. They didn't simplify the process?
Why do you need to do this? I'd redirect individual folders instead...
Hmm, something about writes and reads to AppData being bad for the SSD?
03:32
@Ariane erm. Shouldn't matter
its harder to kill a SSD by excessive writes than people think.
Are you sure this is an issue? I've never seen abnormal I/O to AppData and endurance is not an issue with modern SSDs.
> endurance is not an issue with modern SSDs.
I'm not sure at all, no.
Well, my SSD is 4 years old
(and heck, I have an older system that pages a fair bit on a shitty SSD and I'm not that worried)
Relly? I've always heard about it
03:33
@Ariane Its more likely you'd have a controller or other failure than wearing out your SSD
and wear related failures are predictable and somewhat graceful
So basically what do you think I should do? Delete my Documents folder, replace it with a junction towards D:\, rinse and repeat for other folders in my Documents folder?
Sigh. I'm trying to implement incremental backups to a server. A shared server.
Predictably, things are not going smoothly.
SHUT UP AND DIE IN A HUGE EXPLOSION, CLIPPY. IN PAIN.
2
I told my client to buy a dedicated server, but noooooooo
Digital Ocean is not that expensive...
I'm tempted to migrate the site to a decent server and never tell them. They'd be none the wiser and I'd be able to provide them better service.
Well, not really. I wouldn't ever do that. But one can dream...
Sounds like a pain. I can't really help, but hang in there.
@bwDraco That's pretty cool. I ended up having to get rid of the game. It just didn't run fast enough on my Nexus 5. Would take ages to load any combat. :(
@MichaelFrank It's really CPU-heavy.
If you missed it, there was some (mild) drama earlier...
03:42
Eh, not in the mood for drama today. ^_^
@ThatBrazilianGuy linux?
@JourneymanGeek Yeah it's a shared hostgator web server. I have SSH access but it's really limited, jailshalled, etc
@ThatBrazilianGuy Try Linode; they now have more memory thanks to a recent upgrade.
ewwwwwwwwww
@ThatBrazilianGuy no rsync?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Yuck.
03:45
I'll try Linode or Digital Ocean, whatever is cheaper more cost-effective. I think D.O.
@JourneymanGeek I have just signed up for Amazon S3, my intention is to use it for backups. However, I want incremental backups.
There is an official S3 cli tool that syncs, but it is not incremental
@ThatBrazilianGuy I thought rsync did incremental file level ones.
I can't think of any online, linux incremental tools yet
I need to try veem linux, but its in closed beta
I might not be expressing myself clearly
rsync does delta syncs, meaning it smartly transfers only new or changed files
But you end up with only the last state
I want to have multiple, incremental daily backups. Not sure if possible
03:49
@JourneymanGeek Hmmmmmmmm
@JourneymanGeek Sounds nice, but I can't make on a shared server .___.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I think you can run rsnapshot on a local system and backup a remote one?
or the first link
Or install rsnapshot on a server of mine, rsync from production into it, then run rsnapshot. Or...
Dunno, try something :P
I got an error trying to burn my Windows DVD. I only have one disc left so I'll try again tomorrow. G'night everyone.
@Ariane Good night!
Night, too.
03:54
There's an incremental backup for WP that promises to sync to amazon s3 and cure cancer but is in early access, waitlist mode.
@Ariane 'night
04:39
@ThatBrazilianGuy I think the paid version of the wp backup I use does s3
05:12
morning folks
Good, morning.
Hi!
afternooooon
2am ans tomorrow I'll be a mess.
Not here!
Sun is rising up!
05:27
@ThatBrazilianGuy you're always a mess ;p
05:38
@Ariane use a liveusb ._.
DVDs are wasteful in this case
I may have food poisoning
should I stay or logout
I blame this american food
05:57
heh. Current season of Mr Robot is... odd. Quite unlike the first season... there's not as much of a focus in hacking at all. They just show Elliot... going bonkers.
I need to watch mr robot
people are saying is awesome
@AlejandraMoreno the first season is excellent. I'm kinda mixed on the second one so far
But its always been a slow burn show.
I like how most of the technology related things are plausible
Yeah no more tracking someone with visual basic
lol
lol. My "SERIOUSLY?" moment was die hard with a vengence. It was not the massive 70s style supercomputer. It was how they basically has a collection of obsolete PDAs as their magic hacking tool ;p
06:04
@Bob On one keyboard ;p
06:15
one is doing the Alt-F4
lol
@Bob Yeah, its not a show that makes one want to yell at the person who made it to get off his manual typewriter and see what a PC is..
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek the other fun one is when they connect two completely disparate pieces of equipment over some 'interface'
oh, I remember catching a bit of this one
someone with a brain implant literally hooked an ethernet cable by the clip to something around her ear, to "connect" it... :S
oh hey it's on youtube
06:35
Kaboom!
06:55
@Bob that seems terrible. I need to watch that.
Bob
Bob
I think I watched a total of maybe three episodes :P
can barely remember any of it
I think (from looking at them) i would have to have watched that when i was like younger, and right before seeing original star trek to find it entertaining.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek yea it's supposed to be a children's show
I might've watched it during its original TV run
I thought you had found another cool space series, it just comes on after sponge bob square pants
07:18
\o/ Now I can root my old phone.
Blah, google's DNS servers are slow to update in some regions
Updates faster in the US than in india
07:38
@HackToHell in hours or days? and what if much of it has to do with layers of dns caching services in play?
I was directly querying 8.8.8.8 from dig
From San Jose, the update is instant
From India, slow af
looks like the Indian google dns server uses default TTL
US google dns server updates faster

1 hour later…
08:44
\o/ moto G now runs CM13
Probably.
08:56
maybe its an ipv4/v6 problem
its stored in the 8th byte in ipv4 and 9th byte in ipv6
More like, hardly any ISPs do ipv6
oh?
well thats news to me

... not.
The corrosion should really help it and my phone get a good testing... not
Every time I have to ride a motorbike a long distance in the UK it's raining. Every time.
No wonder it's not popular among the locals here :-/
09:54
Hey guys, I was just in the process of building a NAS with Debian and setting up Samba and so on, and I came across FreeNAS out of nowhere and it looks really promising, does anyone have any experiences or opinions they could share about it?

@MattJensJensen Never used it :P
It's largely a friendly UI and preconfig slapped on top of BSD and ZFS.
@MattJensJensen its freebsd based and not bad. ZFS is nice, and you have maybe 2-3 other options as nice, pretty much
Bob
Bob
If you like having full control and are much more familiar with Linux, you might find BSD a bit annoying, if only cause it's subtly different and some commands will do things you don't expect.
If you're happy living in the friendly-UI world, then it should be easier.
ZFS is definitely more mature and better documented when running on top of BSD.
I'm pretty much used to running Ubuntu and Debian servers by ssh, so if FreeBSD feels like macOS terminals, I might cry
Bob
Bob
10:08
@MattJensJensen It will :P
@Bob nyah.
Bob
Bob
FreeBSD and macOS share a closer common root than Linux and BSD...
@Bob Stability is my biggest concern here, and compatibility with Windows, Linux, and macOS
Bob
Bob
In that macOS is literally based on a BSD.
@MattJensJensen samba works with everything.
Bob
Bob
10:09
@JourneymanGeek mixed it up :P
I will be the only one using it, but I'll be filling it with a couple TB from two operating systems over the next few months
I do believe there was a debian based NAS distro tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek IMO none of them are that popular or polished.
and there's a hack that lets you run synology's NAS platform on a PC as well
I'd also like to be able to run a git server, perforce server, and automated tests on it for the data
10:11
@MattJensJensen what's wrong with just rolling your own, outside the webui?
open the js console of this page
there's a hiring message
Just like in Azure
:D
@JourneymanGeek I'm just very unfamilar with ZFS and Samba and hardware raid, I've been doing remote management and never having to worry about those components my whole life and want to be able to get it up working by monday
@MattJensJensen samba is simple. ZFS is not that difficult to get started on, especially with a distro like this, but hard to master.
@JourneymanGeek So right now I'm thinking of starting up by installing Debian 7 or 8 on a 120GB SSD and than playing with samba and ZFS with two 4 TB drives in hardware raid 1
ah
@Bob probably knows the zfs rabbithole better than me
Samba's pretty much 'read the docs'
10:15
As per this wonderful community's suggestions I picked up two HGST NAS drives
Really, thank you all for your kindness and helpfulness
ahh, the good stuff ;)
I'm glad they came in water-tight anti static bags
Bob
Bob
@MattJensJensen @JourneymanGeek The ZoL wiki has guides for installing ZFS. It's very straightforward.
that's standard 'bulk' packaging
Bob
Bob
10:17
Root on ZFS is harder. They have a guide but I have an updated doc that works better :P
@Bob I was planing on putting the root and all OS components on a 120 GB SSD just how I normally set up Debian/Arch and then the two drives in raid would be ZFS
Bob
Bob
And @allquixotic's version: gist.github.com/allquixotic/d09e4a3db1f0944330e7 (he did a L2ARC & ZIL)
@MattJensJensen Yea, that's nice and simple then.
Also consider setting aside an SSD partition for a L2ARC if you want.
One of the things about ZFS is it loves RAM.
L2ARC is a read cache and ZIL is a write cache.
@Bob Do you think 120GB is sufficient for all of that?
Bob
Bob
@MattJensJensen Do you think 20 GB is enough for your OS and all updates going into eternity?
The bigger question is whether your SSD can survive write-heavy loads :P
If it's TLC, don't even bother. MLC, maybe (depends on your workload, and the specific drive model). SLC, great (but expensive).
@MattJensJensen You can always start simple with a small OS partition and leave the rest unallocated so you can set it as cache later if you want.
How much RAM do you have?
I only have 8GB RAM in this machine, and to be honst the 120 GB SSD is just the worst SSD I had lying around
Bob
Bob
10:23
And will the server be doing anything RAM-intensive other than acting as a file server?
@Bob Probably running tests, and baking executables and lightmaps, ideally a build server too
Bob
Bob
@MattJensJensen There you run into a bit of a problem... ZFS recommends 1 GB RAM per TB of zpool space, and the rec I see is 8 GB minimum too.
Absolute minimum is 4 GB apparently.
@MattJensJensen Yea, no. Just no...
8 GB RAM, with 4 TB zpool, and as a build server?
I mean, it'd work, just don't expect good performance out of the thing...
@Bob So pick up some RAM and remove some of its responsibilities? haha
And the SSD is MLC, I just checked
Bob
Bob
@MattJensJensen Ok, I just looked into a few more updated resources - 4 GB is still the minimum, but unless you want dedupe everything above that is just icing.
That leaves you with up to 4 GB for other server activities.
@Bob Hmm, that's good news
Bob
Bob
10:28
16 GB total would be more breathing room though.
And the CPU is fairly decent, is there an expectation of heavy CPU workload from ZFS and Samba?
fucking hell to enable CORS on Azure CDN
I have to fuck with their API
How much fucking time is it going to take to add that
Is Azure that much of a hassle?
Bob
Bob
@MattJensJensen Not really, no. Especially on HDDs that won't be that fast.
Yep, sucks too much
10:34
@Bob Awesome, so I might have some headroom for build work, considering it's a K model i7?
Bob
Bob
@MattJensJensen your CPU will be fine, but RAM is the bigger concern
could always try it and add more RAM if it's too limited
or use the SSD for cache but then you run into the possible wear problems
I'd recommend you back up the OS in a ZFS dataset/snapshot so if the SSD does die you can replace it pretty easily :P
Oh okay, I'll give it a go as it is and see if performance needs it. Again, thanks so much, I can't show enough gratitude for the advice mate
I see some weird chat happened in the morning.

@jokerdino actually no
I missed most of it XD

I suppose I never managed to find myself at that levels of desperation.
ah ryao is there
Gonna say he did a huge amount of work getting it on gentoo
It seemed more like a troll, I mean, best case scenario you instantly make someone fall in love with you over SE chat, what then?? ha
@JourneymanGeek that's after most of the action, boo.
10:53
lol
@MattJensJensen heh, d00m. Not sure for who tho.
@jokerdino yeah. I swear. I walk in and I'm like "who did toilet on the floor".
and you see the dog hiding behind the curtain
@DavidPostill I read them all.
@jokerdino alas, I'm usually the one who knocks barks.
So, the dog is totally not at fault here ;p
@jokerdino :)
10:57
what surprises me is that she continued to stay in the chat.
I would probably walk out at some point.
I mean, that's what happened with onebree when xyz said some things to her.
OK, nuff drama-ing.
@jokerdino she handled it in good humor
@DavidPostill I didn't know I could physically cringe so much
@DavidPostill should have booted him when you posted your reminder.
@jokerdino With hindsight yes, but he behaved for the next couple hours until I went to bed.
On this mobo only two of the SATA ports are blue, I'm pretty sure that means that only those two are SATA 3 and the rest are SATA 2, does that completely ruin my NAS plans for this mobo?

@djsmiley2k Yes, it goes up to 40 when the queue get to a certain size. It seems to be when it hits somewhere around 1550 total posts awaiting review.
k
Oh, but not on rep? shame
You get 20 and then some time later (not sure how long) if you go back to the queue you get another 20.
12 hours
it told me
11:31
@djsmiley2k It lied. That 12 hours is the time left till the count resets (which is midnight UTC). It also says that after the first 20 and then gives you another 20 some time later before the time is up.
@Rahul2001 He's unlikely to come back and read the transcript when the ban expires.
Oh, he's been banned?
