@DavidPostill Just removed the if (J === 0) { //-- Question only statement and its closing bracket
@Mokubai Thanks. Perfect :)
Time to backup FF again :)
Wait, what do 10k users see on the timeline link?
@Mokubai No idea. I'm a 50k user :)
17:03
K
I think labour really starting to get real now
@DavidPostill Well, 10k gives you most abilities so :P
I'm between 10K and 20K, what should I check for?
@Mokubai Give me an example question/answer and I will screenshot.
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill Backup FF? o.O
17:05
@Bob My settings - including all the recently changed GM scripts :)
classic...
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill Ah. I used to do that.
Then I added it to my automatic backups.
Then I set up my own Sync server, so... :P
@Mokubai
@Bob Yeah. I need to automate all that stuff.
Bob
Bob
17:07
@DavidPostill Sync is the easiest, but... see room topic :P
!!tell DavidPostill topic
@DavidPostill For all you Super Users out there. Current topics: Technology, Tea & Taylor Swift. You have backups, right?
I see exactly the same as that screenshot
Hmmm. assumed the red patches went away
ah. okay, even an incognito user can see that stuff.
17:09
Great website
any recommended cloud backup options?
@Bob I do have backups. In 3 locations 1 offsite. But they are manual (I have to connect USB drive and rotate etc). I don't have the bandwidth to do cloud backups as you might remember - 10 Gb /month)
Bob
Bob
@wgwz I've never looked at those much because I upload at all of 0.8Mbit/s :P
Amazon S3 is actually a really awesome data storage service, though you have to bring your own client program
Bob
Bob
But crashplan and backblaze are pretty big names
17:10
Personal or business?
Bob
Bob
if you were going Amazon you'd go Glacier but they don't provide a ready-made client
business
how about cron jobs with git? :P I wish it were that simple
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill Ah, mine are only auto to manually attached drives :P
Mostly to protect against accidental deletion.
i'll take a look at all those though, thanks
Bob
Bob
The offline backups are far less frequent.
Hm. I should add a mount/unmount script to the auto backups. That would protect against ransomware too.
17:11
I hear Arkivum is pretty shit the offical recommended product from my instution...

Arkivum it is!
I don't have any offsite backup solution per se but I back up data to multiple external drives. One has File History, the other has system images.

Nice job Samsung did with that one
If you only have a small amount of data (like 2GB), Dropbox is super awesome
Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop official?
@bwDraco that works just keep them disconnected when opening e-mail attachments (-;
Everything I care about fits in my Dropbox, so everything else could blow up and I'd be fine
Bob
Bob
@BenN If you care about data privacy, Dropbox is super not awesome.
17:13
@Bob Well it's pointed at by Samsung.com's support page
Fair enough
Bob
Bob
Generally, backups of a business server tend to involve some form of encryption...
They're my nearest service centre.
Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop fail
So you could encrypt stuff before putting it in Dropbox
Bob
Bob
17:13
@BenN you could. extra (manual?) effort. much harder restore.
I've looked at Backblaze several times but I'm extremely short on funds so even this is not an option.
Also, extremely limited bandwidth.
A fairly simple .NET program could manage the crypto; derive a symmetric key from a password
i'm still vying for git and cron jobs backed up to bitbucket :P
I've never really felt I needed any sort of cloud backup. I just don't have the bandwidth to support it.
Bob
Bob
@BenN eh... backups and crypto are two things you generally don't want to DIY
17:16
Yup waving a flamethrower indiscriminately over my phone's mainboard reflowing my Galaxy S4's U800 PMIC seems to have fixed it
Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop O_O
what was wrong?
@Bob The old audio bug (had to bend mainboard to get sound and startup)
@Bob PMIC. Power management. The phone was apparently refusing to turn on.
and more recently regular "Sim disconnected you must restart" messages

@qwertyuiop o.O

Ah shit, the SIM disconnected issue isn't fixed. But audio is
can a civilian buy a de-militarised naval submarine?
@Bob I wouldn't roll the crypto algorithm myself, just the program that applies them to the file. I would test it, of course
Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop oh, those. I used to stick a bit of folded up paper in there.
loose clips
I really wish Windows allowed me to store multiple system image backups on one disk.
@Bob Nah it's not the contacts or the clips.
17:17
@bwDraco Using Windows Server Backup?
Bob
Bob
@BenN to each his own... I'm perfectly capable of writing a backup program; at the same time, I'd never do that.
@Burgi I feel that this could be a phrase that begins an awesome story ...
Bob
Bob
easier, faster, and cheaper to buy a ready-made one
It's probably another solder joint somewhere that got cracked or loose from me bending my phone 5 times a day to get it to start up

Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop what on earth have you put that poor phone through?!
17:19
As it stands, all the above problems on my phone were worse when it was cold, and generally didn't occur when warm. So at the beginning it was super annoying because I didn't know what the problem was but it'd always start when I left the house and actually needed to use the phone.
@Bob I dunno, before I lost my S2 I was using it for months with all the screws lost
Bob
Bob
@BenN I used that one right up until a certain accident involving a CMOS wipe and RAID/PATA mixup stuffed up my drive IDs and made it completely forget about all the backups it took.
@Burgi And you need the means to sneak up on and do something to said yatchs?
i was thinking more bond villain/captain nemo crossed with keeping up with the joneses
Bob
Bob
I won't go near Windows' built-in backup with a ten foot pole now.
Anyway, whatever's wrong with my phone feels like an "analogue" problem. That's about 80% fixed.
17:20

Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop dammit I need me one of those :P
@Bob Have you made sure it's not the connector or socket sub board? You can get replacements for those for like $10

@qwertyuiop It probably is, but that phone's long retired now.

Heck, S4 and G4 are both gathering dust.
Surprisingly enough, I have all that equipment in my house -_-
OK, expect for the RF spectrum analyzer
Bob

The G4 has a likely faulty VRM on the board. Hasn't failed yet but it's in that batch.
@Bob No warranty/insurance?
Bob
Bob
@qwertyuiop I have... the right column -_-
@qwertyuiop No insurance. Warranty... is iffy. Taiwan model. Very good chance LG will refuse a repair in AU.
I pretty much cbf'd and got an S7.

@qwertyuiop I like the power on diags.
"If the battery voltage is too low, plug it in!"
It tells you to check the frequency of some oscillators later down that page.
I guess I have something like 2.5 working phones now?
The S4 only has one of its four problems left, and it only happens when you put it in the fridge.

Q: Tethering using a Nokia N8-00

Emanuel LandeholmMy trusty old ZTE Android wich I used as an wireless access point for my computers was stolen the day before yesterday... I have a Nokia N8-00 but it seems to be really flaky... I had to d/l an app to get basic internet connectivity tethering working, but lot's of sites using https fail miserably...

I had an N8... lost it in a taxi in Hong Kong :\
Was a pretty nifty phone, actually.
Heh
Taxi was where I lost my S2 too. I liked that one. I still miss it.
17:36
@qwertyuiop why is your phone in a fridge?
I've never lost a phone :/
@djsmiley2k testing how well i managed to fix the Cole bug.
I lost my wallet twice, once at college (and someone nicked the £80 I had for someone, for their PC) and once after buying a chinese take away

@qwertyuiop My S2 replaced that N8 :P

well customer service at jungle disk is good. i submitted a form with my email and got a call from a rep within an hour, not a total sales pitch convo as well

Prosopagnosia /ˌprɑːsəpæɡˈnoʊʒə/ (Greek: "prosopon" = "face", "agnosia" = "not knowing"), also called face blindness, is a cognitive disorder of face perception where the ability to recognize familiar faces, including one's own face (self-recognition), is impaired, while other aspects of visual processing (e.g., object discrimination) and intellectual functioning (e.g., decision making) remain intact. The term originally referred to a condition following acute brain damage (acquired prosopagnosia), but a congenital or developmental form of the disorder also exists, which may affect up to 2.5% of...
I can't recall names generally
I've managed to not lose my wallet for 15 years now. But I have lost my keys at least 5 times.
but faces are fine

@djsmiley2k Linking names to faces of people I don't meet regularly is near impossible :P
yeah
There are times when Bob and JMG the concept show up in my dream.
@Bob this... happens to me sometimes... I just can remember a face or name, and then suddenly it comes back in a flash... should I get myself checked?
Bob
Bob
there was this guy who recognised me (somehow?!) from uni, at a shop several km away, who I'm sure I've never actually talked to before
how on earth...
not me
17:41
oh god last night, my dream, dafaq was that about
some weird zombie monkeys and other things
Bob
Bob
@Rahul2001 idk, not really much to do and I'm not saying I have that particular disorder, but I definitely have quite a bit of difficulty recognising people
maybe just some people are really good at it
and 'we' (no idea who we were, other than I was included and there was a number of people) were trapped in some kind of weird game thing
I knew we had to escape, but kept trying different routes out of this area, with no success
Portal?
eventually I had a monkey on my head, it was holding me down some how, then my wife woke me up as I realised that the monkey wasn't real, it was part of some simulation of if i'd had to go outside where ever we were
I don't have dreams that often... according to my mom, I'm a deep sleeper...
17:45
you got sleep apnea?
I have, i stopped dreaming properly around the age of 12
Only now, after 3 months treatment, are my dreams starting to return.
Anyone ever got recurring dreams?
@jokerdino sometimes...
I used to dream constantly that I was on a P&O ferry
there was a human sized cat and dog on board, in some kind of weird fight to the death
sometimes the cat was on my side, sometimes the dog
sometimes neither, or both, and I was stuck in the middle
It was always a P&O ferry, weirdly specific on that point XD
The best dreams were teh lucid ones
Especially one where I tried to read a book, found the letters kept changing which made me realise it was a dream
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k how do they treat that anyway?
17:48
@Bob for mine it's a facemask that pressurises the airway
Bob
Bob
ah
Hm... I once woke up and realised my eyes were already open...
It was weird
o_O
Never done that.
Oh and saometimes in my lucid dreams I'd choose to wake up, that was also weird
Yeah... it was a year ago, I'm not sure about the details...
Tho i was once 'trapped' in a lucid dream
17:50
@djsmiley2k What? How?
I knew I was dreaming, but couldn't control it, and couldn't wake up
In my dream I was screaming at my wife 'Im Dreaming, wake me up!'
but in reality I didn't actually say anythign I don't think
@djsmiley2k I don't think anyone normally can...
well, I do sleep talk
me and my brother used to have full convos while we were asleep
cept they didn't make any sense
Bob
Bob
o.O
I want to hear a recording of that
I'm supprised we didn't drive my wife insane

I've been with her since I was 16

I have a Windows Server machine that has gone to sleep. The network card responds to ARP queries, but Wake On LAN is off. I can only connect to the network via VPN, but I can remote into any other server on the domain. I've updated Group Policy for that machine to disable sleep, but since it hasn't woken (I waited >12 hours), it hasn't refreshed the policy. Is there anything I can do to wake it? Will it wake automatically at some event, or do I need to go and physically wake it up?
how do you know it has not crashed or locked up instead?
It's a brand new machine, so I'm fairly certain it's just sleeping
the task scheduler can wake a machine to do some scheduled process, then go back to sleep again after the task is done and the delay for sleep is hit. so yes there is possibilities for it to wake.
many of those tasks are set for early morning 1-3am kind. that is why often you hear of people complaining that the machine wakes up at night.
Bob
Bob
Pretty sure Server doesn't sleep by default
If at all
18:28
@BenN I don't see why it'd wake
I think I remember needing to disable sleep on other servers, but I forgot to check it on this one
but again I often don't deal with this level of setting up
i'm normally handed a server already built etc, 'here you go it's ready'
@qwertyuiop: How did you wind up with a defective Galaxy S4?
18:45
I've always been afraid that I'll say something embarrassing in my sleep... what if I shout out the name of my crush and my sister hears it? Shudder
19:04
as long as the 2 are not the same person O-o whats to worry. they say a person would not normally do in thier sub-concience what they wouldnt do in thier conscience. I have carried on whole conversations while asleep, and nothing was so memorable for the people to even remember the details.
Also, for a lot of people (including myself, fortunately), anything they say in their sleep is completely unintelligible, without any resemblance to actual language
i would rather talk in my sleep then speak when drunk, now That can be long lasting effects :-)
19:47
piles of (pata) drives sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/sop/5662000026.html to go with it
anyone know if you could be screwed by ransomware if you are using something like crashplan or backblaze? could ransomware somehow encrypt the encryption keys for those programs? and you wouldn't be able to use a restore?
If a piece of data needed to access your stuff gets encrypted, then you're in trouble
Fortunately an encryption key could be easily written down on physical paper or committed to memory
20:27
@DavidPostill I'm so frustrated right now...
That code you gave me worked awesomely, but is giving me random errors three if conditions into the batch file :(
And I can't for the life of me figure out what is going on...
Now I have to resort to dirty tricks :/
@Rahul2001 Make a question :)
@DavidPostill I'll make a question if I cannot figure it out by dawn... :P
Is PowerShell an option? PowerShell is pretty great
@BenN not really, because I will be running this in school, and powershell is disabled in the computer lab...
They uninstalled it? Or script execution is disabled?
20:35
@BenN it asks for the administrator password of you try to run it...
Is the shortcut set to require elevation? You might try running the PowerShell program directly, e.g. by typing powershell in the Run dialog
@BenN I tried, I don't know what they have done...
I think I might try copying the powershell executable from another PC...
If that fails, you could probably just bring in a .NET program that does what you want. Alternatively, just ask the IT people to allow PowerShell
This guy has some pretty useful software...
And... I've run out of USB ports...

rant, wtf is the point of forcing ppl to scroll to the bottom of EULA
@wgwz um... how much time does it take you to press ctrl + end?
fair enough, but the point still stands, why should i even have to do that! :P
i prefaced it with rant, so it may not be totally reasonable
I guess they want you to at least skim the EULA
Like people would actually read it instead of scrolling by
21:21

well that sucked. My lg phone is 1920x1080 and has slim port capability (HDMI adapter wire thing).
I am trying to hook it up to the computer monitors (dual use) using a DVI adaption. all the monitors have DVI (and vga) .
finnaly on the 3rd monitor it works without digital noise.
the monitor is a 1920x1200, but the aspect the phone displays on it is more like 1920x600 .
none of the (few) monitor menu items will fix it, but what is strange is , , something to do with how the HDMI to DVI adapter is working?
all my brilliant plans up in smoke again. my next step would be to have a simple DVI switch to swap between phone and computer.
22:32
i am thinking it would be a little impractical to have a 42" HDMI monitor in a 8foot trailer :-)
both of the hdmi tvs cope properly with the phones HDMI adaption.
I found the original (non cheap POS from china) DVI to HDMI adapter, and it does work on the other 2.
and it is single link looking style, so they must have connected the other adapter up oddly.
But now the aspect is wrong on all 3 :-(
ahh well they never said the phone would output 1920x1080, out of that port, even if its tiny screen is.
22:57
Love Android. My ringtone now randomly plays a "morphin time" clip from a group of clips from the power rangers TV show
23:18
ahh that tiny usb micro stuff isnt going to hold up to 365+ more connections anyways, the resolution is 1/4 hd for some reason, and it works iffy on the hdmi tv already. NEXT!
23:54
oh my there are like thousands of android boxes out there for cheap that could play my recorded videos.
now if they would adapt proper to a dvi monitor, that would be, the goal:
Have some very low power consuming device to do the simpler tasks (watching video, minor browsing) hooked to the same full sized desktop monitor. then have the desktop too, which will suck up power.
