Q: Troubles with 80486

Diogo noobI recently bought a game entitled World of Warcraft, but sadly, I could not install it on my Intel 80486 PC. I am so sad, because I really love this game Is that anything I am doing wrong ? Sincerely

I think this guy is trying to troll
@DanielBeck I think it's an alt account for the guy you (and others) were arguing with in Meta earlier.
morning
lol
Hi @JourneymanGeek
@sidran32: You remember the joke i always make about legally changing my name to Geek? ;p
@JourneymanGeek Yes... I remember :P
Has decided if i ever get pissed off enough at the parentals, i need to change my name to Geek The Journeyman
since middle names are cool
00:25
That's right, you don't have a middle name?
nope
I technically don't have a sirname either
well, officially anyway
Huh.
and my name is used both firstname lastname and lastname firstname
well, for some reason someone decided to mix the chinese style lastname first, and the alternate indian way of using your dad's name, but left out the son of
So, it should be Firstname S/O Dadsname, I'm legally Dadsname Firstname, but some people do Firstname Dadsname. But i can, in theory use Firstname ProperLastName if i got a deed poll without too much fuss
Heh, how convoluted.
Ya
Amusingly, apparently any SE/SO swag i've gotten has been addressed to "Journeyman Geek"
and well. Journeyman is a horrid firstname and an awesome last name ;p
(I prolly won't, of course. Unless i decide to become an athiest techmonk!)
00:32
:P
@JourneymanGeek how's your XP knowledge?
@Luke: Its been my day to day system for years
But honestly, i don't know what i know unless someone asks, and that little lightbulb goes over my head
55 mins ago, by Luke
QQ: Repair install of XP with IE8. MSOOBE doesn't load because it relies on IE6 or 7. Can't install IE8 in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and cant' log in any other way. Actually, since I restarted I can't log in at all... How can I get in so I can re-activate WIndows XP?
ouch
@Luke: there's something wrong there. If you have a non activated system it should still let you log in
@JourneymanGeek Nope. Repair install clears out the old activation
00:36
no, not the activation, the log in
even if its expired you should be, in theory able to get in
@JourneymanGeek It tells me I need to activate to continue. The activation window doesn't appear because it had IE8 installed. I can't access Task Manager or the Command Prompt
And I can't log in via Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt :(
where can you log in (if at all) ?
No where :(
wonders if konboot will be useful here
any errors?
Konboot?
No, just a message saying (in Safe Mode): YOu must activate Windows before you can use it. Because you can't activate in Safe Mode, restart in Normal mode... Paraphrased
00:39
Warning, can be used for evil piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot
hm, no then
and normal mode won't work either?
konboot won't be useful there then
Got the passwords. Normal mode doesn't work. Just keeps trying Safe Mode
Even if I select Normal mode during bootup
Well... its borken >_>
Damn borks...
Is too used to nuking windows systems if they don't boot
or they perform badly
or i'm just feeling grouchy
Lol
I'm gonna check the BOOT.INI file, because it shouldn't KEEP going into Safe Mode automaticlaly...
00:48
@Luke: honestly, considering the sheer number of variables, this looks like a SU question
there's a few people around who know this sort of deep joojoo things ;p
Damn... Well if this doesn't fix it, I'll ask
Anyways, gotta go... TTYAL

3 hours later…
04:18
What's the general opinion on telling people to go google things? superuser.com/questions/379242/…
@SimonSheehan it's frowned, downvote it
05:11
@Sathya @SimonSheehan That question is hard to categorize for me. It's not obviously off topic, and obviously doesn't fit any of the other categories. The closest I can think of is it being somewhat of a "shopping list" question but it isn't really, either...
05:42
ooh hardware.slashdot.org/story/12/01/17/0014220/raspberry-pi-25-linux-computer-now-in-production-video
06:02
@JourneymanGeek I can't wait for a Pi
@Paul: At the price, assuming shipping isn't too dear, it might replace my mp3 player, and download box ;p
@JourneymanGeek And a million other applications. PoC clustering, home automaton, media PC?!
@Paul: amongst others ;p
I'm really thinking of it as a training-pants PC
(granted, i want to replace my ipod with it, and a 1tb hard drive ;p)
Where will you get a 1TB SD card from :)
lol
USB hard drive
06:17
Get one of those new Victorinox penknives with 1TB on board. They are only $3000 or something :)
ya, they have an ad on it
I was thinking a regular WD essentials drive ;p
and a rubber band ;p
geek isn't sure how he would control that tho
06:21
The pi needs power, as does the wd. A second rubber band and a battery pack.
ya
it would be rather gloriously ghetto
I'm rather hoping they sell a compatible screen for the DSI connector and a case so its simpler
06:38
mmm... Raspberry Pi sounds delicious :)
But with Win 8 supporting ARM, could it run that? :o
Why? Underpowered?
its not a very powerful processor (roughly on par with those 99 dollar tablets), and MS would need to do a port for that specific set of hardware
also, there's one feature (secure boot) which i rather doubt the razzie has which MS mandates
Ya, but you don't have to use secure boot though. Unless it is mandated on the ARM version?
Its apparently mandated on the ARM version
06:43
Hmm.
I was dreaming of an ultracheap Windows home server :P
I probably could set up a Linux home server but I have all Windows machines here. :P
lol
maybe compile windows embedded for it? ;p
But would it have the server functionality that I seek? :P
And since when could I compile Windows Embedded? :P
since ever? ;p
though i suspect you'd need MSDN/MSDNAA to get access
06:45
Windows? Open source? :O
hm, maybe i am getting confused
i almost certainly did
anyway, I don't see how the OS of a device thats sitting in a corner, quietly doing things matters that much ;p
I could switch tamandua to windows, and probably not notice
(the little atom box)
It's easier to get a Windows server to host things and interoperate with Windows properly than to get a Linux server to talk to Windows machines the same way :P
lol
like how?
I run both, and honestly, i hardly notice
Well, Windows uses Windows stuff. Linux uses whatever
including good ports ;p
smb for example
06:48
I know. But they aren't handed to me :P
I know I could do that. But for a first time project, I want something that's a bit more hand-holding :P
Besides, there's nothing wrong with Windows Server :P
lol
Its not windows server, its your choice of hardware/software
but unless we're talking things like AD, the big difference between windows and linux is really the learning curve
Yup!
And AD may be explored >.>
But primarily it's learning curve. I'll level up on the difficulty later on :P
Granted, that is not a problem for me. Linux servers are a surrogate for hardware for me
The difficulty is often appreciated
samba does AD, i think
well more accurately i should be saying LDAP
06:53
I haven't really looked things up yet and researched it since the project is still a gleam in my eye so we'll see :P
lol
If you want to go windows servers, atom, or hudsons look good
We'll see
And eww, microsoft.com is running on Windows Server 2003. I wonder when they plan on upgrading? :P
When they have to ;p
06:55
You'd think they'd pioneer their latest product though :P
Ah, ok, xbox.com is on Windows Server 2008 :P
Geek does think that he wants to move off mini itx systems for small form factor boxes tho
mini atx is a fair bit larger, but i have this irrational hatred of mini itx boxes after my first experience with them
nods
@sidran32 @JourneymanGeek Hello.
I thought that SU ran on Windows servers
I do have space for more than one drive tho
06:57
Hi @Borisyo
Not according to netcraft
Though it does say "OS - Linux" and "Server - Unknown"
@sidran32 @JourneymanGeek Bummer that you cannot change colors of your characters when posting.
@Borisyo Why?
06:59
thats the load balancers
er
Bold, Italics, no underline however.
caching servers
well, BOTH
lol
@sidran32 I don't see appropriate buttons on panel.
really i do not think so
@JourneymanGeek How you did that?
07:00
@Borisyo I mean I never saw the need to use multicolored text :P
even bold works maybe even bold italics
@JourneymanGeek I need underline, strikethrough and colors.
@Borisyo: strikethrough is easy - three dashes before and after the text you want to strikethrough
@sidran32 You should upgrade yourself to 64.
oh, on the site proper? no
07:01
@JourneymanGeek When posting question.
@Borisyo Huh? 64 what?
ahh then no
@sidran32: architecture ;p
@JourneymanGeek Yes
I'm confused. I use 64-bit Windows 7 on my laptop and desktop...
@sidran32 But not your username.
07:02
Oh that... wow. :P
Totally missed that
@Borisyo: you might be able to try using standard markdown. no idea what subset is supported tho
@sidran32 People who are born in a date ending with 32, should also upgrade i think.
@JourneymanGeek So no underline and colors when posting question?
apparently not
I'm not sure tho ;p
I still don't see why there'd be a need for it :P
It's late and I gotta sleep. Night all.

2 hours later…
09:01
@sidran32 Seriously, why is the main account not suspended? How much disruptive behavior is required for this?
By the way, if someone's interested, I archived almost all of the comments he later deleted from Meta. I'm thinking about adding them to my answer there. The other comments just don't make sense otherwise, and we can't have that.

1 hour later…

1 hour later…
11:51
@sidran32 That is exactly why you need a linux based pi - it would be like therapy
12:18
@Sathya thanks! My internet connection was dropping frequently and my router told me SNR values were abnormal, I wanted normal range.I am getting 6.5 - 7.5 dB :( . Got to call my ISP.
12:38
@HackToHell Hello?
12:58
@Boris_yo yes
13:52
@HackToHell ah, seems like phone line problem
@Sathya yes, Getting slight interference in phone also, looks like the wire's getting crappy.
14:21
hi @PeterGrace
Hi there!
how're you doing?
Could be better, have a bit of a cold so working from home today. Yourself?
@PeterGrace ah. I left work early today, temperatures yesterday were quite low, esp what I'm used to. Woke up with a headache & mild fever
It definitely seems like there's a germ floating around BosWash, friends all up and down the eastern seaboard are complaining about colds on facebook.
14:25
funny thing, same here :)
@Sathya where are you located?
@PeterGrace India, in Bangalore
Ah, how cold was it yesterday?
It was -11C when I started my commute yesterday -- that is "flash-freeze-your-mustache" cold.
@PeterGrace haha
it was about +11degC / 51F here
the average temperatures is 24/ 75F
you work off the NY office?
Nice, it's supposed to get up to 50F later today in Philadelphia
Yep, I live about an hour northwest of Philadelphia, commute to NYC.
g.co/maps/wy25u <-- if you're curious about the distance, it's quite a commute.
14:29
@PeterGrace :o
takes you like an hour and hour to commute?
That drive line is incorrect for what I do -- What I do is drive to Trenton, New Jersey and take commuter rail from Trenton to Newark, then take the subway from Newark to Manhattan. All told, it's about 2 hours, 15 mins each way.
youch
It's a long commute but the benefits and pay is worth it :)
well, that's good to hear :)
14:53
reads up
say what! That looks very interesting
15:24
Alright...
By the looks, Windows 8 Beta could release when I finish my exams. Good timing! (:
@TomWijsman Just for you <3
@TomWijsman armed guards? outside an electronics plant?!
@tombull89 amusing that no one gave a crap all these years
Also, die, Ubishaft.

"But Ubisoft’s Anno 2070 will refuse to reinstall if you just swap out something as simple as a graphics card." http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/01/16/ubisofts-activations-monitor-hardware-changes/ http://www.guru3d.com/news/why-guru3d-probably-never-will-review-ubisoft-titles-anymore/
@Sathya Yeah, saw that on Reddit last night. DO NOT WANT.
@tombull89 Yeah, apparently. But that might make some kind of sense given the amount of material inside, if you go count the products all those workers are working with...
Well, it's a good way to get less people to buy your game and more people to pirate it. I won't be playing it at all, for sure...
I dont mind activations so much, except when i have 3 days to play games, the first one install and configure, the next piddle with activations junk, the 3rd something going wrong. I just wanted to play :-)
15:47
I hate it when things (not just games) break when you are like "I have some time left, I'm gonna do that for a moment". Y U NO WORK :(
I am playing a new space simulator, RealSpace, travel at the speed of light to distant planets. I figure i should be at the first new solar system in 30,000 years.
:-)
@Sathya no ubuntu ?
@Psycogeek got a link to it?
@PeterGrace fictious.
15:58
:(
Its like the guy who asked to have the "game" parts removed from the sub simulator, I want to play for real. 6months at sea
I may have purchased Microsoft Space Simulator when it came out.
won't confirm it for sure, of course.
wat happend?
4 trucks and 7 cars damaged on the highway.
16:03
@TomWijsman what led to the pileup?
hope no one's hurt
@HackToHell One dead, four heavily injured.
Nothing is mentioned about how it happened, but given that that amount of cars/trucks is involved I guess someone did a serious driving mistake or drove way too fast.
Hmm, interesting part on how they take pictures of the accident such that the cars and such can be taken away as fast as possible.
@TomWijsman poor guys
We saw something similar happen in front of us when we were on vacation.
A car literally flying to the right...
Walked back over the highway to see what happened (already other people near / can't help much more due to language barrier).
Really freaky if it happens some cars in front of you!
Nice that they actually go and trace it out and find the source...
@TomWijsman yaes, I saw an bike accident once, horrific
@HackToHell I had one some years ago, while I was distracted by something at the other side of the street I ended up crashing into the back of a small truck. Somehow, my feet were suddenly over the steering wheel and I fell down on the floor. Not really injured though...
16:20
@TomWijsman You gotta be more careful. Even if we are careful, other roadsters might not be so it's risky.
A friend of my friend died in an road accident, so I am careful while driving.
@HackToHell: It was in group and the car was parked, I'm pretty careful on my own. If I remember correctly it was someone from our class that walked outside to join us on the trip. Because he lived so close he didn't have to come to school first to drive back again...
@TomWijsman hmm..I am going to sleep, got to get up early and finish some homework. See ya guys :) . Pleasure chatting :D
@HackToHell Good night.
on average ~100 people a day in the US die in auto accidents, some ~2000 injured, yet it is not news, nothing new about it.
@Psycogeek Yeah, but we're a small country compared to the whole US.
News here could be considered exaggerated...
16:30
if a person lives to be 60 years of age in the US, I calculate they get 3 chances to be in a accident that could get them injured.
The result of this is traffic being blocked between Brussels - Antwerp - Amsterdam, and also on a local level.
If Brussels - Antwerp makes up the half of the country's height, it surely hits the news if that amount of cars are involved.
I guess just two cars crashing do not hit the news.
i think it should be news daily, like right after telling us that 3 people died in a car bomb in iraq, to just toss into the end of the program, a By the Way 89 people died in the us that same day in auto accidents.
@TomWijsman Didn't the F-Secure guy in his talk at TED trace the first computer worm/virus/... also to St Petersburg?
Link. Wasn't the first worm, just a random example (infected image file). Starts at 10:00 or so.
16:57
@DanielBeck Yeah, similarly I tracked down that executable to Bentley University, I wonder if more information would be obtainable from it.
Jan 14 at 12:29, by Tom Wijsman
> CompanyName Bentley University
If only I could get the inner resources...
Probably no tracking information there though.
Well, we could contact faculty.bentley.edu/details.asp?uname=wvanderclock about it. :P
See research/consulting/practice.
17:12
@JourneymanGeek You may be interested to know that I like my Das Keyboard so much, and I found myself getting typing fatigue at work, that I bought a Das Keyboard Professional Model S Silent to use at work. :P
It shipped yesterday. I'm once again stuck refreshing the track package page over and over again. :P
@Psycogeek 100 per day? That's a lot.
In Germany (population 82M) it's around 10 per day. And the US doesn't have 10 times the population...
@DanielBeck When you have a country as large as the US, with so many miles of roads, it's not, really. Still sad though.
People are much more spread out here and probably drive much more than in Germany, my guess would be.
I wonder if there's a statistic tracked about how many miles are driven in a country every day...
Hm. This says that in 2008 there were a total of about 3 trillion miles driven in the US... bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2008/06/chart-of-the-da.html
Can't find anything similar for Germany, at least quickly
17:28
i dont know how they figure it either . **the U.S. leads this statistic with 16,155 miles per year per person ** so many factors involved.
@HackToHell RegSetValueEx(HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\Fi‌rewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List\C:\Documents and Settings\Test Lab\Application Data\TrendVXC\TZX8VASJ7I.exe, REG_SZ: C:\Documents and Settings\Test Lab\Application Data\TrendVXC\TZX8VASJ7I.exe:*:Enabled:Windows Messanger) [c:\windows\system32\reg.exe]
CTRL+F: Messanger
@DanielBeck When it comes to even attempting to understand how much driving in the US goes on, how many supertankers of crude oil are piped in each . . . Day. about 14 Supertankers a day in 2010
This list of countries by traffic-related death rate shows the annual number of road fatalities per capita per year and per vehicle-km in some countries in the year the data was collected. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries caused an estimated 1.26 million deaths worldwide in the year 2000. The average rate was 20.8 per 100,000 people, 30.8 for males, 11.0 for females. 90% occurred in low and middle income countries, with South-East Asia and Africa having the highest rates. The number of vehicles in the fatalities per number of vehicles includes 2-wheelers a...
US 8.5 deaths per million miles driven, Germany 7.2.
Croatia 548..?!
Hm. Road fatalities per 1 billion vehicle-km shows that the US is only slightly above Germany, so we may not be too different.
@sidran32 That's where the distances come in. Per 100k capita is almost 3 times as many.
17:33
Hmm, the TrendVXC folder must mean something.
Funny how that Ainslot is a false positive but shares the typo.
The domains requested by the program don't exist, the IP the data goes to is connected to AT&T.
It probably matches the same IP as his SU answer. I guess he is just using names of random companies (and what not) and random executable names to post the executable at a lot of places.
17:55
@TomWijsman Is somebody posting suspicious programs on superuser?
@Psycogeek Someone did a few days ago, I don't think you can view it.
Et voila, first thing on the news, traffic chaos. xD
@HackToHell Okay, news got a whole animation on it. A car from the right lane accidentally drove to the left lane and so got in front of two cars. There were four trucks driving after those two cars. One of the trucks had to avoid to the right, causing the other cars behind it to crash too.
So, all lanes blocked. To pass over it, four hours of waiting what is otherwise 10 minutes...
@DanielBeck Yes, when we were in Croatia, we saw nothing but accidents. :D
Unusual roads, etc...
18:34
Just took apart a new iMac... Need a toilet plunger
@Luke to take the mac apart, or did you just turn it into one?
19:01
Awwww, I wanted a word count on my edit :(
I see last nights "outburst" on meta got culled...
@Mokubai I still have it, if you're bored.
19:30
@Psycogeek To take it apart to get at the hard drive :P
Not sure it's worth keeping, I'd just assumed that the meta topic would have been clipped down rather than culled.
So, when are these snowmen going? Or are they here until spring?
@Luke ebay.com/sch/… One time some replacement kit came with these plastic pry tools. they came in handy for those stupid plastic snapping junk. If that doesnt work then a sawsall and nuts and bolts to finish
Ya gotta love the plastic snap together stuff, right after you break 2 of them :-), you figure out the "system" that device uses, after that it comes apart like magic. Web pictures help, I find them right after i get it apart too .
Anyone know how to remove frames at the top of all web pages (on a wife that is inserting them)?
@soandos dont understand the question. to remove frames hit the "remove frame" button, when that dont work, try "remove wife" button. Right click in the internal frame of any location that is being framed by another location, and Copy Paste the internal frames URL, paste back into address bar. Remove the crapware ?
19:45
@Psycogeek, it is not a SU frame, it is a general frame the appears on all pages I load (unencrypted)
I meant on a wifi network, not on a wife
public wifi?
who is the frame from? , how does the addresses show in the address bar? what browser? What does the frame say?
as in the frame is added by the router?
20:05
@Mokuba @ps Yes
I want something like in firefox where I can click "Show only this frame" but in chrome
Ah, I'm an FF user I'm afraid
It seems like a simple task to be honest, just take everything between the HTML tages that are in the frame, and load it is a new web page. Not sure why this functionality is not built into chrome.
20:56
@Psycogeek Ya I seen those. I"m talking about the aluminum iMacs, model A1224
@Luke so they dont have "quick Assembly" snap together factory whipped out snap and go catches that were assembled with no care as to how anyone would dissasemble it? Like todays plastic cars?
i could tell you about a time long ago in a far off land, when you took the 18 screws (not 4) out of something, and it just came apart. Like a miracle, weird thing was back then the products also lasted so long taking them apart was just for fun.
21:40
I f*ing hate patent lawyers. Specifically Apple patent lawyers.
does this mean we can go back to flip-phones that cover thier critical screen parts with other usefull parts of the phone, so you can jam them in your pocket with your keys and not worry?
How about dual monitor phones that are the same size as say an iphone, that Flip/fold out to a full 5" screen with a slight creace in the center :-)
If Apple had their way the only choice other than their crap would be chisels and slabs of stone, and even then we wouldn't be allowed to call them "tablets"
Could it be apple is just trying to get samsung to sell them thier pannels cheaper :-)
I think all the GPS makers would be able to sue apple, because they had a design like that before the ipod even existed.
and patent or not, a patent isnt who hired the lawyer, but who actually thought up the idea (the intelectual property) First.
21:55
Patent lawyers enable and encourage this kind of obscene stupidity. I've got no problems with people coming up with real innovation and ideas and having some right to be able to make use of that idea, but what Apple does is just a mockery of innovation
How much of it is just "corporate wrangling" that they know it is rediculous, but because they are publicly owned corporations they have "obligations" to thier investors?
