We're not talking about 980M. We're talking about the desktop 980 adapted for laptops.

That card has a fully-enabled GM104 and is rated for 150 W.

Well, whatever is in here, which runs at nearly 1.2GHz, 2048 CUDA cores, 7Gbps 6GB GDDR5 with 2 dps supporting 4 displays daisychained 2x2 at 4K resulotion.... that one, that doesn't do more than 120W electrical

@Asmyldof In practice, the card will draw less than that. That's just the peak TDP. You'd probably 150-200W under typical gaming workloads.

...hang on. The 980 Ti has 2816 CUDA cores (GM200, 22 of 24 SMMs).

The 980 has 2048 CUDA cores (GM204, 16 of 16 SMMs) but 4 GB or 8 GB of memory, not 6 GB.

The new GTX 1080 has 2560 CUDA cores (GP104, 40 of 40 SMs).

The Pascal SM has 64 CUDA cores, while the Maxwell SMM has 128 CUDA cores.

But the faster memory and lower power use is not to be sneezed at

@JourneymanGeek what? Titan X has a fully-enabled (24 of 24 SMMs) and higher-clocked GM200.

At the far high end for HPC use, the Tesla P100 uses GP100 with 3584 CUDA cores (56 of 60 SMs).

Essentially the main selling point of the titan is being a marquee product

The 980TI was a more sensible buy, since it was a lot cheaper and provided most of the performance of the titan

Titan X is about 40-45% faster than 980 (50% more CUDA cores but slower clocks), but 1080 is at least 60-70% faster than 980 (and a whopping 200% faster in optimized VR workloads).

Hence NVIDIA's claim that 1080 outperforms Titan X, and it's not by a small margin.

Once drivers are optimized for Pascal, the gains could be even larger.
