upside down middle finger with a overlong pinky? Elephant taking a train?
and HP's old logo seems timeless to me
@Bob : I don't suppose you noticed your phone getting slower after you rooted it did you?
@JourneymanGeek Nah, it's just with all the cut backs and cost savings they've now run out of horizontal lines.
it's dq now if you flip it upside now.
ily ilij dy Jij
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Uhm... I pretty much rooted it before doing anything else.
So if it is slower I wouldn't know anyway.
@MichaelFrank well, it was dy before.
00:20
@JourneymanGeek HP logo on the new Spectre.
That HP managed to make the machine so unbelievably thin is truly an engineering tour-de-force.
...and nope, we're not talking about low-power Core m.
Ell
Ell
Hi guys
> hyperbaric cooling technology
Interesting. HP's using a positive-pressure approach to cool the system.
who will actually buy it
@CMDEmu people who want a thin laptop I suppose
Bob
Bob
00:31
wont they just buy a mac
like they do
No?
I wouldn't
same
but im not the majority
HP also boasts their cleanest, fastest software image yet. This should mean less bloatware and a setup fine-tuned for performance.
It's not marketed towards the majority.
00:33
so macs are for specical people
ok
I'd actually think most people get something cheap
there certainly specical
@CMDEmu Macs are for people that want a Mac.
what if thats what they think that they want
...I'm going back to work now.
00:34
then they might.
Machine is probably free of extraneous bloatware, except for a few HP-specific utilities, and has probably been configured for performance.
Bob
Bob
"configured for performance" my arse.
@bwDraco that was more or less my experience with the steam
I did wipe/rebuild it eventually for windows 10
11
Yup, last model
I probably use it like most muggles use a tablet ;p
Bob
Bob
I'll believe it when I see it. Even then, that sounds like another upgrade/compat nightmare.
you buy the computer, uninstall the bloatware, install all of the drivers, install your fav apps, copy your data from external storage
00:36
hi people
how yall doing
then its tommorow at that point
There are a few ways to tune Windows for performance. OEMs have more control over the underlying configuration; it's probably been optimized for performance.
s/uninstall all the bloatware/ make a recovery disk, then wipe the system.
@allquixotic currently only feeling like I got run over by a tiny clown bicycle ;p
@Bob ^ (since he knows the whole running joke ;p)
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco Oh, sure, because Microsoft deliberately makes the base install suboptimal... not.
There is a chunk of that handled by the chipset drivers... like just about every other laptop and desktop in existence.
Also tiny bit silly to speculate about stuff like that on zero evidence.
00:38
my "optimizing for performance" ==> tweak page file size, use Bitdefender instead of Windows Defender (disable Windows Defender!), use PerfectDisk to defrag, use hardware RAID with a top of the line RAID controller or HBA, and download vendor drivers for custom hardware that Windows doesn't have the best driver for out of the box
I heard microsoft added noise to the windows installation disks because there was a few megabytes left over
just data with no meaning
@allquixotic most of which you can apply to any desktop.
@CMDEmu that's like saying I heard cashiers add air to your grocery bag because there was a little space left over
@CMDEmu I heard they put a mouse on the moon, and its eating the damned cheese.
Idle speculation is boring
who did you hear it from
Bob
Bob
00:40
@allquixotic Eh. First is use-dependent. Second is bloatware if included by the vendor. Ditto for the third. RAID is very specialised. Vendor drivers are an expectation for preinstalled images, and nothing special.
I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you
@allquixotic raid controllers are bad for boot time ;)
well then I wouldnt belive it if I was dead
darn, that was a very dyslexic error to make it.
Bob
Bob
Point being, you don't really get much more optimal than a base install plus chipset drivers.
Anything else is usually snakeoil.
I hate it when people use the word dyslexic that way
00:41
MS has no reason to pad out an installer. Especially when in a release or two, optical drives are going away
@Bob why is it bloatware if included by the vendor but good if the user installs it? :P
@CMDEmu I'm dyslexic. That was a classic letter transposition, since b and p are basically similar rotationally/translationally.
@allquixotic you get to choose.
oh well thats fine then
and lots of vendors install norton (eww eww ewwwwwwwwwww) or mcafee
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Because third-party software should be user choice? If BitDefender preinstalled isn't bloatware, then McAfee isn't bloatware. Norton isn't bloatware.
00:42
people tend to use the word as if its a bad thing even if they dont have it
@CMDEmu I am pretty careful about how I use it
Bob
Bob
@CMDEmu ...Dyslexia is a bad thing. Not something people have control over, but it's still mostly (all?) negative effects.
it is what you make of it
Bob
Bob
Just like my being short-sighted is a bad thing.
@Bob not really. It means making an effort, but there's various associated benefits
00:44
@Bob I agree it should be user choice, but some bloatware is better than others... it seems that most vendors tend to choose the worst possible solution in the market (or one of the worst, at least) to chuck on systems as bloatware... and I think they should, at worst, bundle the installation files and let you choose in a click-through setup wizard whether to install or not
2
@JourneymanGeek Excuse me? I've been using Norton for years with absolutely no trouble.
because a lot of programs don't uninstall 100% cleanly (leaving around files, registry entries, sometimes even programs or services that run on startup!) so you'd really have to be diligent or reimage from vanilla Windows to eliminate them
ah superfish
Its problematic in terms of written language and math, but the same underlying cause means I'm very good at visualising a problem
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm? Thought the definition was quite literally 'difficulty reading words'.
00:46
@bwDraco general consensus has been that it tends to be a performance hog
@Bob meaning, yes, but the underlying cause is basically something like your brain processes imagery differently
some little part of my brain sees a b and wonders if its a p or a d
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic That's happening on Samsung phones now. Still kinda annoying.
@allquixotic I think my last thinkpad did that with AV
but I'd really rather build a system to what I want, not who pays off my OEM ;)
The way I visualize, I see the image in my mind as a canvas that I draw on virtually.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm. Last I checked it was 'cause unknown and might vary by individuals'.
@Bob there's some pretty good, effective programs for dealing with it
Bob
Bob
00:49
shrug if it works for you, good :P
We've had the whole font conversation right?
^ ^ ^
anyway, in context, the b p transposition was not me missing the home row like the other day
it was basically my brain going 'derp'
00:51
or perd ;p
dislexia can be really annoying at times
Amusing thing is I have Sublime text set up specifically to mitigate that
you can go round in circles and fool yourself without even knowing
00:53
(tip, if you don't like the typical 'fat bottomed' dyslexic fonts, the adobe source fonts are good, free beautiful fonts that have many of the attributes that help)
Secret mod sauce.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek So. Gunship with giant building-leveling cannons hit archer. Archer trips over, and gets right back up.
I get it's for balance and unit strengths/weaknesses, but it's still pretty funny to see :P
o0
@Bob I need to pick up that mission post campaign but the cheeve hints that lots of arty would do the job ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...that sentence confused me :P
Strangely, it was the first half that was confusing.
Post campaign?
It was the last allied mission in Uprising.
I want to try that mission once the whole campaign is done, without cheats
OH
I thought you meant AOTS ;p
Bob
Bob
00:59
o.O
Gunships?
which also has an archer
Bob
Bob
:P
donno I'd consider almost everything there a gunship ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, I did manage to do the AotS one eventually, so you could try doing the same thing? :P
Bit of luck involved though.
yup
hmm

01:09
@JourneymanGeek Is the clown bicycle light enough for voice? :P
@Bob throat is still a bit painful
nose is 90% clear
Bob
Bob
Ah.
@JourneymanGeek Probably a bit late now, but I generally find lozenges => less coughing during the cold => less throat pain during and after
Often none at all :)
yeah, I was taking the industrial strength ones
now I'm doing ricola, since its tamer
Bob
Bob
Industrial strength o.O
Nose has always been a bigger issue for me than throat :\
the red ones tend to burn up most weaker colds before they get bad
Bob
Bob
01:17
o.o
@JourneymanGeek I think I just went with these last time. Mixed with these
fairly standard stuff
claritin works well for nose issues unless its a full blown flu
and I got drinkable lemon penadol now <3
01:42
I dont even have a sense of smell
02:10
ugh, watching a vive review. Soooo coool
I might even have the space for it.
Bob
Bob
Does it fit dogs?
this might be a problem, yes
I guess you could fit it on a GSD....
also
02:26
the audio is still crackly
this is just rediculoustly shit
02:40
context might help
as would calming down.
Bob

02:51
@JourneymanGeek and now ms au subscription centre calls me... and seem helpful. Either because I got a different person or because ms us gave them a good kick up the...
@Bob probably both
Bob
Bob
03:04
@JourneymanGeek well, everything seems to be moving along now. Did get asked a lot for feedback so ... The latter is more likely :P

03:16
@JourneymanGeek I've still not tried that
Probably should try it on the speech recognition lines :P

And the humidity level doesn't fall below 60% all day
@Bob I'm sorry, what did the fox say?
And spotify isn't working :'(

2 hours later…
05:54
gads who are the clowns that spend that much money to invent this stuff ?
this one qaulifies as "larger" than the similar ones made in the 1970s
was it this guy?
It was bad enough when they strapped a cell phone to your head, but if they ever intend this stuff to be anything more than a cheezy 5 minute gadget, they need to start with making a good viewer. and again that aint it.
Frenel lenses ? seriously a good glass lens costs dollers.
It'll likely get smaller over time. I don't think 70s headsets had head tracking, and least 90s 3d goggles apprently gave you pretty bad headaches. there's a ton of technology behind that.
this isnt "the future" , this is kludged together prototypes somehow making it all the way to market., they make full HD res lcd pannels that are less than 1" in size.
They have developers 3d "bending" all thier imaging to (basically) fix what is a totally improper lensing and display system.
You also need a high refresh rate
and a lot of other things
and this is you just not trusting anything remotely modern again ;)
Yet somehow review sites are going gaga over pure garbage, when there is known technology that is itself becomming old even, that they do not apply.
There's this thing called "a sense of wonder"
New things can be cool. and sometimes being cynical of everything all the time can be tiresome.
06:05
I would expect this "modern" like what were seeing to come out of the garage of a 14 year old genius, not out of teams of engineers
the problem is they are now following the leader, instead of making something that would actuallly be used , and become something other than a 5 minute gadget of cute that will be obsoleted along with the rest. They could create the VR that wins, the one that 15 years later people are still using. The one that is built with quality, not built to try and make a quick buck with cheap junk.
This is what they have done with VR everytime they put it out. that is why it never catches on. the hype comes in, new products are made, few people buy them, the whole idea drifts off into oblivion. Repeat in cycles
06:20
hmmm
i'm not at all hyped
I couldn't care less, most of it will disappear, little things will stick around (like eye tracking)
eye tracking could be really useful for UI design, disabled people, all sorts
Passport office, where eye tracking shows the person who just authorized that passport didn't actually read what was on the screen...
eye tracking in cars - you think you looked left, but did you? The car thinks you didn't and it noticed that big truck that you missed.
Then again automated cars ftw.
these are real lcd pannels, you can buy at an electronics shop, there is no mystery future. and they come in HD. the picture of this is Old, the device it is from was at least 1 year old before that.
Remember the Virtual Boy?
20 years later, we have commercial viable and actually usable VR systems.
The review on tested was about an hour.
The fact that there's three competing headsets tho...
valve has the best hardware, oculus has the most mindshare, OSVR's the cheapest, and you might be able to build your own/upgrade as needed
youtu.be/u6CARe34Nxg?t=334 "virtual reality is comming out of our labs and into reality" 1992 :-)
I was watching this actually youtube.com/watch?v=l3Wa6HYjqQw
late 90s 3d goggles
06:36
Did nvidea finnaly drop stereoscopic 3D out of thier drivers? It was one reason i always wanted to get a g-force card over the amd offerings. to play for a few hours with 3D lcd eye blocking style.
looks like its still a thing
there is nothing modern about
strapping a overwieght piece of junk on your head, and dancing around with 2 sticks in your hands :-)

What I truly fear, however, is the potential fate of Seoul, a cornerstone of the global economy and home to Samsung, LG, and countless other big corporations.

@bwDraco just like 1980s amercian army recruit commertial.
it is just missing Captain Korea
Bob
Bob
Meh.
Just another Monday.
@Bob This is a genuine threat against South Korea this time around.
Bob
Bob
I don't know if you're aware, but this isn't the first time they've issued threats like this.
Nor the second.
Nor the third.
Or fourth.
In fact, I'm pretty sure this is a monthly exercise for them, if not more frequent.
I'm pretty sure we have systems in place to deter and intercept this sort of attack.
Bob
Bob
07:03
@bwDraco Just as genuine as the last dozen times, sure.
The problem is that Seoul is so close to the DMZ that intercepting missiles from DPRK territory before they get there is not exactly going to be easy.
also the problem is the US additionally aiding in wagging the dog.
To be honest, I'm bloody scared about Seoul's potential fate.
Alas, there's not much we can do about it.
Note that I didn't mark that video NSFW for no reason.
Bob
Bob
Protip: stop giving them attention.
That's what all this posturing is about.
@Bob Flagged relevant chat messages for mod attention.
That was foolish of me. It has no place on chat.
07:13
you know how many times russias leader told the american leader they were going to blow them up? during the height of the largest concentration of nuclear weapons ever? I am sorta surprised those idiots didnt already destroy the whole world. or mayby they did and we all went to hell a long time ago
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco There's no need for that either.
I'm just saying... sure, laugh at the typically horribly CG'd videos, but they've been making the same threats for so long that there's no value left in them.
If you spend your time getting worried over these you'd never get anything else done.
It is YouTube, do we really even know if they werent "embellished" by someone competing with the show saterday night live?
lol.
@Bob finished the soviet campaign.
Dropped a satillite on the statue iof liberty to finish it off.

@JourneymanGeek They kinda have. They joined in on the sanctions this time around.
without chineese tech goods , good luck making those high tech missiles, even the US cant do that anymore :-) without 'em.
07:23
@Bob I mean enough that they go "hey, your leader is an idiot. Maybe our brothers in the korean communist party would be kind enough to assist him in accidentally getting a heart attack. While falling down a flight of steps, twice out of a window both times...cause he was knifed in the chest, while running away from ....
Is there any reason to pick a motherboard that appears to be designed without regard to cost?
(Street price well in excess of $500.)
MSI apparently went "we're building the very best possible X99 motherboard, no matter how expensive it might be."
@bwDraco the extra $200 will get 1 patch paid for ?
$300 for ram, $300 for video card $300 for CPU, put all that on a $100 motherboard, is like putting a 454 V8 engine in a pinto.
07:38
It's basically the PC motherboard equivalent of the Enzo Ferrari.
It's distinct from the rest of the MSI X99 lineup, above even the XPower series.
It's the most direct successor to the Big Bang-XPower II (X79) board.
You figure that is mostly just another "revision" of the other x99s they already created , could be most of the bugs and flaws would be worked out by now too.
Again, designed without regard to cost.
MSI quite clearly sought to make a motherboard that stands in a class of its own.
Looks like they've revised the DDR4 memory slots a bit.
@Psycogeek The board is meant to be in a class of its own. It goes beyond even the ASUS ROG Rampage V Extreme, from what I can tell.
Get this: It even takes registered memory!
> Supports RDIMM 1Rx8 memory module(Operates in non-ECC mode)
08:01
You hear a bunch of guns shooting outside your front door, what is your first reaction?
A) stick head out door, before drawing target on it.
B) grab camera , this is sure to make YouTube
C) lay flat on floor behind thick parts of wall, be alive to cleanup bodies in the morning
@Psycogeek Get down and get the cops ASAP.
D) Pray they're looking for somebody else
E) send your 9 year old http://www.ndtv.com/offbeat/9-year-old-reporter-breaks-crime-news-posts-videos-fires-back-at-critics-1339213
(thats what made me think of it)
F) Hide and use a selfie stick to record the action
he who takes selfie with devil. Need long selfie stick.
08:11
@Psycogeek soon 9 year old shot
Speaking of selfie sticks, they need a damn gyro mounted on them
lol
stuff like that exists
or you get a chicken
Hell its india, so, you probably could walk into a store and buy a live chicken ;p
Isn't DJI a manufacturer of UAVs?
What happens if you want to take a photo pointing up or down?

@MichaelFrank score 1 for the "customer retention services"
@Psycogeek Yea, it was gonna cost me $50AUD up front to cancel... Or I can keep using the service until Feb 2017 for $70AUD.
AKA " the squeaky wheel gets free lube"
@JourneymanGeek that would be a good starter pack (and the price ~600$) to solution the Queasy cam.

Do kids in the US get to do internships from grade 10?
Cuz my principal just told me that I can do one from a cyber security company here in India and I'm confused...
sure, i dont know the popularity and the extent, but at least some high schools and or class types can require doing a minor internship based on quantity of hours.
@RahulBasu Go and do it. It will be good experience and you can later put it on your CV ;)
10:39
@DavidPostill I probably will unless they find an internship in a robotics company...
:)
web search shows that beyond any requirements there are endless opportunities for probably every high schooler in any area ever, to be able to. Even though many workplaces would view interns as a waste of time effort and training funds. Therefore any oppertunity that one would be presented will either be doing shit jobs for no pay, or getting valuable training for free.
@Bob Lol
To be fair though, to a non-techie, it's a reasonable question to stumble on
Did anyone notice any mention of power usage during NVidia's keynote yesterday?
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky There's an edited version, gimme a sec
@Bob lol
That's just trolling
But imagine asking a non-sports literate person (e.g. me) the following question:
Which of these is not an association football law:
1. The ball
2. The offside
3. The referee
4. The goalkeeper
I've seen this before :D
How many groups are there of order 2?
@JesterTran It depends ;)
@DavidPostill Assume I've just been introduced into group theory.
3, because 0 can be assigned to a group :-)
@Psycogeek Not quite follow...
@DavidPostill As I thought, thanks
!!wiki Finite group
In abstract algebra, a finite group is a mathematical group with a finite number of elements. A group is a set of elements together with an operation which associates, to each ordered pair of elements, an element of the set. With a finite group, the set is finite. == History == During the twentieth century, mathematicians investigated some aspects of the theory of finite groups in great depth, especially the local theory of finite groups and the theory of solvable and nilpotent groups. As a consequence, the complete classification of finite simple groups was achieved, meaning that all those simple...
Thanks!

This version looks better ;)

What's wrong with IE?
!!google What's wrong with IE?
@jokerdino did you want my list? I use it and the IE "engine" and not the others ever. Doesnt close properly leaving parts of itself laying around. screws up HTML5 video playing in weird ways , even though it is fullly usable for that. Doesnt really have the best control of what goes on. Assinine alignment of tabs that should be closest to the web page they represent not the top.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Edge? It's fine. IE11? It was fine two years ago.
The problem is people are still using outdated versions
...and I'm expected to support it
they all could use a simple Row of large Icons that toggle "feature" of all types On and off, providing the users simple fast and more complete control.
11:24
Just figuring out the best way to rustle few jimmies.
@Bob I'm pretty sure there's places that use IE6 ;p
@Psycogeek You mean like this?
@DavidPostill sure, that will work. But i was thinking more like icons that represent both the item itself that is "off" and a visual change of that icon to represents clearly its state of being on or off.
Big JS logo with clown face, and nose that turns green or red :-)
A big ugly X made with scull and crossbones for activeX , that turns to a happy face when it is off
A Gif Anim button with a cat anim that stops when it is off
An obnoxious italics AD that flashes spazmoticaly when switched off says NoFraud
a big A made with dildofont , that just dissapears completely when flash is off.
that just leaves a big BS icon, that changes colors from red to green, for assorted "other" blockings.
Right next to that should be a drag and drop Trashcan, that looks like it could handle nuclear waste
This of course is to add more elements to the BS list.
11:46
Gyazo(CTRL+Shift C Combo) not working when Visual Studio is run in Administrator mode?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Nah, that's vanishingly rare now.
IE8 is all the rage.
Oh, still technically supporting IE7
