huh, someone cleared the star on that message o.O
*poke* @DavidPostill?
@Bob Tidying up ;)
i started playing the stanley parable last night
that is a really odd game
Bob
Bob
09:23
@DavidPostill eh.
I don't know what exactly was cleared, but I didn't notice any real starring-for-the-sake-of-starring.
(my definition of that would be lots of single stars in a short period of time, usually on completely innocuous posts. stars spread out over time on more specific posts that stand out ... are fairly normal star usage)
shrug
I've cleared stars once so far in my entire time here :P
having messages full of smiles starred seems excessive
especially for a monday morning
Bob
Bob
@Burgi shrug we generally don't impose rules on starring
there's been a few star-fests with just the word "NO" I think. was a couple years back.
Adi
Adi
Hi
There were stars of several different posts containing nothing but several lines of ☺☺‌ ....

Would asking about disabling Kerberos auth for Outlook on Windows 7 be on-topic on SU?
Bob
Bob
09:30
The one single time I've ever cleared stars (and apparently told @DavidPostill how to at the time..) was when ~10 unrelated messages got starred in blocks, once per day, for several days.
@Bob Similar to your star-fest of "NO"
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill And we didn't clear those.
shrug
I don't think it's my job - or anyone's job, really - to police the star wall.
But we don't really have a policy on this either way anyway.
@Bob Ah. OK Will leave alone next time, unless someone asked for it to be removed or it appears to be offensive.
Bob
Bob
I'd just ask that you consider leaving be unless it's a repetitive pattern.
the star wall is like the that thing in hollywood?
Bob
Bob
09:32
But it's entirely up to you, in cases like these. If it particularly annoys you, sure, remove em :P (...dunno what the other owners/mods think. we just haven't removed before.)
i think you scared adi off
Bob
Bob
@Adi So-so. It's on-topic to the extent that it does not involve a corporate network.
I have been asked to remove some before by onebree
Bob
Bob
huh.
I probably missed that.
Hm... I'm trying to find the starred "NO"s, but search doesn't work on something that short -_-
It was during one of the flagging incidents
09:34
there are more politics here than in my office :/
Bob
Bob
Ahh... in the interests of minimising attention/defusing the situation, that's a bit different :P
I wonder if I can dump all the starred messages.
o.O 228 pages
@DavidPostill Sorry, I'm just trying to find a bit of a balance between "go crazy" and "no fun allowed".
It's not a problem we've really encountered much in the past.
@Bob No need to apologise, I'm happy to have you as a room owner mentor - especially as none of this seems to be written down anywhere ;)
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill We basically just make it up as we go along :P
So far, we've not really interacted much as room owners.
Special powers, psh. We're just normal chat users. Most of the time.
But we haven't had much drama except in the last half-year, either.
It's really really hard to find the old star-fest :\
There was a mini one here :P
Though that was more an event.
@Bob Hmm. I first joined RA about 6 months ago. Bit of a coincidence ;)
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill You were just unlucky :P

i joined SU properly 6 months ago....

@Bob Well, I tried to steer away from that as much as possible. I ended up with this

Q: How to disable Kerberos authentication for Outlook on Windows 7?

AdnanA bit of background: I'm trying to debug an issue with Outlook taking a long time (20s) to connect to Exchange when being on the same network as Exchange (connected with Ethernet cable) but connecting considerably faster (100ms) when VPNing to that same network (over WiFi, or any outside connecti...

i was going to ask what had changed in the last 6 months but i kinda don't want to know
Bob
Bob
@Adi If it's in a corp environment, consider serverfault...
If you're asking about Exchange at all, heavily consider Server Fault.
Adi
Adi
09:47
@Bob Well, this is more about disabling kerberos auth on my own machine
Preventing an application on my machine from using kerberos
Bob
Bob
@Adi Hm. Hard question.
I guess the political answer is to let your admin deal with it :P
Adi
Adi
@Bob :D
@Bob d'oh!
Bob
Bob
@Adi Yea, in that sense it's a fir for SU and not so much for SF, but at the same time the SF guys probably understand this kind of issue better. But they might reject the Q just because you're not the admin.
@qasdfdsaq It's alive now :D
After some 6-odd hours of struggle -_-
I think I need to add some verification to my copy script... only copy if the zfs module exists.
But how the hell do I check that in an initramfs image? o.O
Good to hear. But urgh. I've always been a bit... Uncomfortable about the maintenance of zfs on Linux.
Bob
Bob
09:51
@qasdfdsaq ...yea. Using it is nice but the whole installation feels kinda fragile.
On the plus side, the pool itself survived without issue
scan: scrub repaired 0 in 0h4m with 0 errors on Mon Mar 7 08:40:54 2016
Well you can do it the hard way, of extracting the initramfs and checking it's contents.
Adi
Adi
@Bob I guess if I don't find an answer on SU, I'll ask for it to be moved to SF after I edit it to make it more suitable. Would that be possible?
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Hm... it's a dkms module that was added but failed to build/install. Dunno if that's something that's obvious to check. I'll have to run some experiments later.
Fragility - yeah that's one of the reasons I don't boot off it and have never been tempted to try.
Bob
Bob
I think I can make this whole recovery thing much less painful by backing up my old initrds, and installing a recovery OS to the boot device.
09:53
@Bob isn't there any way to tell it to be a mandatory dependency in the initramfs build process and to just fail if it fails?
Bob
Bob
Also, I need to take some time to pin the SPL version so it doesn't break again -_-
@qasdfdsaq I had it in /etc/initramfs/post-update.d/ -- but I also had a copy in /etc/kernel/postinst.d/
...I should proooobably modify them to only copy across the file it's actually a post- for
Then again... the initramfs build didn't actually fail.
It succeeded.
With a missing module.
I updated initramfs (and the kernel) several times today before figuring out the module itself wasn't building... the build step is completely independent.
It probably doesn't help that I had to actually boot into the OS (with an old snapshot of initrd) to check the modules. Apparently modules and chroot don't mix :P
@Adi You can always flag your own post with a message asking for a migration. But I can't tell you if SF will accept it.
@Bob that's the thing... Surely there must be a way to indicate at some point in the process "fatal error, do not continue build" if module is missing?
I don't really understand the process very well tbh
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq The module build failed but the initramfs build was a separate step. I suppose apt-get should've aborted, but it didn't for some reason :\
Anyway, this happened months ago.
Even my preupgrade snapshot was broken.
Had to grab files from the cleaninstall snapshot
@DavidPostill Oh, this might be the big one I remembered (my message there was joking)
I got them computer parts, and It booted YAY! overclocked the $60 pentium processor to 4.3 already. I need more testing, but i have seen this before where an overlocking board Gigabyte this is UDH3 thing, will allow cranking of the "turbo" mode to overclock any ol processor stuck in it. So again i find that a K is not nessisary although a tweakable board is.
I've never done overclocking, i prefer stability over raw power
10:04
25% over is usually easy and stable too.
Overclocking can be perfectly stable. 25% on the Skylake 6700K is virtually impossible on a normal setup.
although i like the idea of seat-of-your-pants computing
I do all 4 , Overclock, keep it cool and low voltage, and insure total stability too
Overclocking isn't what it used to be :-/
i have a P3 in the garage that i might turn to molten slag one day....
10:06
@qasdfdsaq yes just like when they pushed the GPU clocks at manufacture. you only get what you can get, if they already have it tweaked high, it wont change much without unrealistic measures.
So now i am about to install the win7 64 bit, and previously avoided like the plauge the UEFI booting , and stuck with old school legasy , so things like XP would work and etc.
For UEFI booting all i need is GPT format, and win 7 (sp1) is completly capable of doing that?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek You also need to have your firmware boot off the DVD in UEFI mode :P
Easy way of making sure of that is by turning off legacy boot entirely.
@Bob The kludge of kludges...
is that dual cherry picking action?
@Bob Ok well i am already stuffing the win7 onto a bootable flash stick, and the Motherboard thought it could boot either way to it (although it was not yet a bootable)
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek For UEFI, all you really need is a single partition (no GPT/MBR on flash drive) FAT32 with an EFI folder on it.
There's no hidden boot code in the partition table/partition header/etc.
10:12
Being New to it, I assume I am going to fail once or twice first :-( not sure how "uefi" windows 7 was , but oddly the SP1 disk has a .efi file in it ?
Bob
Bob
Generally, you're better off using an existing tool to create the drive though. Doing it manually is a bit error-prone.
@Psycogeek ...yea, DVDs do things differently. I'm not entirely sure how.
Or maybe it's not different? shrug
@Bob ok rufus(ed) a flash , it is fat32, but no efi folder in it ?
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq ^ Samsung found a way to cram more ads in
@Psycogeek Did you pick the UEFI format?
@Bob Lol. Long press => Info => Hide notifications!
I picked the "both" format using a Freedos?
Bob
Bob
10:14
@Psycogeek o.O
Anyway, this seems about right for the manual way: thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/…
no raid this time, so that is another reason i would be trying this
> €1,599.00 /month

Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek Choose "using an ISO image", I think
@Bob Ohh, to late, i had no ISO other than the actual DVD, which i would have had to turn into an ISO
If it pi$$es me off enough i will be so quick to go legasy
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek I think the Freedos option is if you want a literal DOS disk.
Also, you can do a UEFI install off the DVD directly
10:18
@Bob and that is exactally what it looks like, a Dos boot disk.
Bob
Bob
Yea, no, you don't want that for this :P
phhht, then why it say both, but i see no EFI crap there, figures your right.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek You can try to do it manually if you want...
For UEFI it's basically format => copy => paste => maybe rename a file
i can just convert after OS install also, no?
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Well, it is IBM
@Psycogeek Nup.
Not without a lot of pain.
It's much much easier to install it one way and stick with that way.
back in a bit.
10:23
What happened to OVH's super duper uber redundant power thing anyway
Ahh Ok i now see, when selecting UEFI only it defaults to the ISO mode
So why am I needing to boot in UEFI any ways ? is it faster ?
Cause like it better be :-)
Rufus FAQ says that making an ISO bootable with rufus it probably wont have BOTH. (like i wanted to read another manual)
gigabyte z97x-UD3h Haswell board on 3rd revision 1.02, slightly smaller than full size board.
Leftover 212 cooler, leftover fan.
Power supply that was borked/fried that I patched up long ago
"pentium" 2 core no HT processor 3.2g
2 chunks of 2x8Gig ram
SSD seen in the back left , to install OS before going into case (this time).
the IGPU hooked up with DVI (not dual) on that board which was kinda cool, using the old dell pos 22" monitor , or it could do HDMI.
10:51
@DavidPostill what was that JS you linked last week to show the timeline?
i had a tab purge and accidentally nuked it
nvm i got it
Bob
Bob
11:15
@qasdfdsaq Someone probably "bumped an electric connector"
@Bob ok, found a bootmanager efi thing in the image, and pasted it all over the disk :-) maybe it will find it. . . This time for sure .
ahh chit, now i see why you say to make sure it is only set in the ONE mode, it took off installing before i had a chance to get into the UEFI and insure the method.
okkay, lookie like that did it, freedos still, but with efi bootmanager thing in the boot folder.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek ...I don't think the Freedos mode is remotely correct
then it booted to the flash disk via UEFI, and again started installing.
@Bob well i am this far now, and it (mostly) folloed that manuel method you posted (which i wouldnt have known if you had not posted it).
Of course i dont know what to do now to insure that the SSD will be attempting boot in the EFI method, other than GPT partitions ?
11:38
this is either very very very off topic or more on topic than we care to admit
can you get dehydrated vodka?
sure 1 part gasoline 2 parts water
heh
Or just use "everclear" or bicardi 151 , and 2 parts water. Pretty much the same thing :-)
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek idk. Freedos just sounds wrong :P
To make my "All-In-One" partition Boot+system , I attempted to do advanced formatting (during win7 intall) but in there , instead of doing it before , it still tried to make the &#%@^ other partitions. It provided for no GPT or MBR formatting options, dang thing did not even allow for different cluster size in formatting options.
Bob
Bob
11:43
@Psycogeek If it's GPT, it'll either boot UEFI or not boot at all
If it is all wrong, i will have to fix it after thier condemned method.
MS "Where did you want to go today ?" , Where we tell you to go, and dont forget it !
the "secure boot" part of efi booting ?? does not exist until 8?
flash disk much faster than dvd :-) no wonder why they obsolete that method, that isnt even a fast flash.

one one computer i had certs disabled and removed, replaced by the user having to say yes or no. Nothing fishey about the Gambino certificate authority :-)

Q: Order of addition matters in Excel 2010 floating point?

kmortI was entering a few numbers in Excel 2010, and noticed what appears to be a floating point issue. I took the sum of four numbers, expecting zero, and got a very small number, close to zero. I thought, "okay, floating point issue, sure whatever." But then I noticed if you add them in a different ...

argg, if UEFI boot is more "secure" uhh then why is one of the partitions Fat? Didn't they say that NTFS was more secure :-) none of the viruses have gotten smart enough (yet) to takeover the extensive software in the new UEFI setup, or figured out how to admin straight into a recovery and submit a delete all :-) but what if they did. other than an antiquicated system that has worked for 20 years perfectally, this EFI booting junk seems to make it worse?
With my All-In-One partition , i am able to backup all aspects of the system, including the boot parts. one partition backed up , that covers it all. Cant seem to Force (even) the UEFI method to be an all-in-one?
posted on March 07, 2016

Oh, hello. Didn’t see you there.

. . . although by trying to force it, I did manage to get the system to put the EFI (system) boot junk after the OS partition. right fine backwards mess i got now, just not an All-In-One, which i assume will never happen if the EFI needs a Fat partition.
like a FAT partition, is what acccessable by like anything, or any simple system, so if MBR was suseptable to rootkit virus junk (uhh it is really small) how would a lowest form of fat partition, accessable by about anything, going to be "better". Without (of course) other software that I do not even use.
Hi All
I want to ask you question if you maybe know something about windows, I just cant find it on google
Basically at my work, I have profile with network share where is my desktop and my documents
Yeah that clipper is insane, he says try finding it on google, that's what I am telling I cant find it on google because it's difficult to formulate the question
lol
16:59
So I want to move my work profile which is desktop and my documents on network share, to the local folder
it is also weird to see even win10 users (WHA') going legasy MBR booting. Does the high end computer user need to actually Boot to a >2T disk ? No because they got SSDs now.
I have dead-slow windows7 laptop and I just put readyboost using 64gb usb3 stick and so far it has some mega-gains as the HDD is what is very slow, it has also 4GB ram only
Ray Tomlinson, who invented email and made the @ sign popular dies aged 74
@AndrewSmith supposedly the users folder contents and pointer to thier locations can be changed with a drag and drop, that was at least true for a few generations of the windows. also see pic
the location can be changed via the properties , of the psudo folder that holds that stuff, in the "location" tab.
Will be going out to run an errand today; availability will be limited as I'll only have my phone to keep me online.
17:12
those locations are all stored in the registry.
Myself i would not use the MyStuff locations, as they do not represent fully organising stuff OCD, more like the designated Pile to dump stuff. Also because your files are already on a Net share somewhere, it might be an even better time to leave them there, and store them properly locally organised , and not in a MyPileOfJunk folder area. Then you have another set of them backed up.
17:28
. . . also programs like to use these MyJunk folders for thier uses, mixing up YourJunk with ThierJunk, so I let them use those locations, and the limited stuff they put in can also be cleaned as needed, without conflicting with Myjunk which I wont store in there.
17:38
Uhm dumb questions, how do I do use db_name in oracle
@HackToHell How to know the current database name community.oracle.com/thread/693814?start=0&tstart=0
"You could query GLOBAL_NAME or V$DATABASE. Or use SYS_CONTEXT() passing 'DB_NAME'."
...
The underprivileged can use select sys_context('USERENV','DB_NAME') from dual or sys_context('USERENV','DB_UNIQUE_NAME') from dual
Yeah, I kinda worked around
It's weird
@DavidPostill Thank you for your reply !
I ended up pulling from V$db

great, random pop-up message in chat reminding me to "Be Nice"

they only show that to problem users
(just kidding I got it too)
I got it in every single open chat tab

if anyone is interested in the reasoning: meta.stackexchange.com/a/276570/216955
Hmm This will appear only once per user -
I got it twice already
Maybe you imagined it like we imagine you.
17:59
I had the mesage ont he PC at work, and just on the PC at home
@Hennes This will appear only once per user per persistent-browser-session-state? :P
Once per user per device per chat room?
@DavidPostill not even that; if you clear your browser's cookies each time you close your browser, you'll likely see it every time you visit chat
I usually clean out cookies, so I hope this will not become one per day per 20 rooms
@allquixotic :/
Time for a greasemonkey script ;)
18:06
Actually, that is a good idea
I could just use uBlock to block it as an ad
why would clearing your cookies force you to see it again?
@tereško is this another reason Not to visit the MS store? As that game was going to be one of those store exclusive items? Lionhead studios aquired in 2006 Killed by massive corporation in 2016. Par for the lifetime of other (i thought were great) MS items.
Try it @JohnB.
I logged in to chat with a different browser and did not see the pop-up again
18:08
Maybe it's server side.
I just reloaded "Ask a Super User Moderator" where I've been logged in for several days and got it. If I reload RA I don't see it. Maybe it's not shown to room owners?
@DavidPostill did you have that open in a separate tab?
@JohnB Yes. Separate tab in FF.
@Psycogeek as an AMD card owner, I dont think I have any reason for using WinStore
I would blame this on their apparently non-robust check of whether or not you've seen it before
18:11
I logged out of RA and back in. Still didn't see it.
but if you see it again after you've reloaded all your tabs and such then I'd say that is not the intended behavior
I did get the pop-up.
@DavidPostill Don't worry. I'll remind you to be nice.

@Dave sure but all the non-human species (higher forms of life) do not speak english (for the most part) and they dont tend to discriminate, so as a human form of life your stuck with other humans discriminating you.
19:27
To the older and wiser folks here: What are your thoughts about the way society is going over the last several generations?
Technology has taken us so far, and yet some argue it's making our kids lazy. We're not learning to do things the old-fashioned way any more.
Feb 26 at 18:40, by bwDraco
I'm not one to let myself suffer from the falling baseline that is modern society. I try to do things the old-fashioned way: meticulous and austere.
@bwDraco: there's a good song about that.. its called Deadmau5 - The Veldt
On LTE right now.
kids get to /have to learn much more stuff than before, just because none of it will feed anyone, or build an economy (manufacturing) or make them actually smarter (the web) , they still have more active neurons :-)
I'm fortunate to have been brought up on older principles that emphasized hard work and attention to detail. I'm rather concerned about the "Instagram generation" where people are not being taught the same essential skills children were once taught.
There's soo much disinformation on the web. Sites like though will be good tools to actually learn something though.
19:33
now if they would stop it with all that stupid history (everyone repeats anyway) dump the math (the machines do better) cut out the spelling (spell check works) They could all be rocket scientists before the age of 13. But they have all the old stuff and the new stuff to learn.
My experience with google searching though yields me to websites like peoplewhodontknowanything.com 90% of the time which makes it very difficult for me to know if something i'm reading is accurate.

Yeah yeah, stop teasing me just ssend me the damn phone already
Best Buy is selling it around here.
Don't get me wrong. Technology has advanced our society in ways we never thought were possible. It's critical, though, that our children aren't becoming lazy and utterly dependent on it.

making me the fool for reading them. In referance to Fire and forget.
Sometimes, it really feels like society is regressing...
We're essentially breeding people who have no desire to actually work or do anything useful. We'd rather glorify morons whose only achievement is the conversion of oxygen to carbon dioxide because they "look good" on camera.
STEM fields are dying because people would rather look good than do something good.
Agreed, I think some attributes of society are suffering diminishing returns but other things are making up for it. I believe we're still off balance as a society and there's a lot of work that should be done to correct it though
19:55
@Mokubai LOL, but absolutely correct.
Dija see the movie "Idiocracy"? "The years passed, mankind became stupider at a frightening rate. @Psycogeek: That movie, ill never forget it. Definately a funny movie though.
... Makes you wonder
The handcrafted, meticulous approach to work people once took is dying. That's what I hate about society these days.
