@Dave What is I shine a really bright torch on the fibre?
Sorry I can't stop laughing at that one
00:30
That's handy
BTsync has a encrypted folder option
00:50
@Bob wrong
Pretty much everything other than TDD lets you send signals both ways simultaneously. That includes ADSL, HFC, and most FTTP implementations
@qasdfdsaq I thought you had transmit and recieve lines?
@JourneymanGeek Only on enterprise fibre
On a phone line too. 4 wires no?
Nah. Phone lines only use 2 wires. In reality, you can make do with 1
DSL over phone lines is full duplex and uses FDD. Lower frequencies for upstream, higher frequencies for downstream. VDSL interleaves multiple US/DS bands.
The number of upstream and downstream channels is fixed by the standard. ADSL, by definition, assigns asymmetric numbers:
Also, due to effects of FEXT and NEXT at the DSLAM you wouldn't get symmetrical bandwidth anyway even with a 50/50 FDD splut
My god why do I even know these things.
01:11
Someone thought it was a good idea to only provision 40GB to our VDIs...
Now everyone is running out of space and engineering won't up the size! D:
@qasdfdsaq DSL suffers from really bad attenuation over long distances, which significantly limits bandwidth if you're not within a few thousand feet of the DSLAM.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Sorry - I did clarify a couple messages down that you can get around it by transmitting at different frequencies, with different time slots, etc..
DSL speed drops off fast once you're about a mile away from the DSLAM.
Bob
Bob
More accurate might've been "both signals at the same time on the same frequency"
Maybe code division too but I'm not sure how that works and how that differs from freq and time

In a timely what?! D:
@PatoSáinz Well, we've been seeing more and more zero-day exploits and attacks that do this. That's why it's imperative to keep everything up to date and take regular backups.

The Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA), also known by some legislators as the "Great Internet Sex Panic of 1995", was the first notable attempt by the United States Congress to regulate pornographic material on the Internet. In 1997, in the landmark cyberlaw case of Reno v. ACLU, the United States Supreme Court struck the anti-indecency provisions of the Act. The Act was Title V of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. It was introduced to the Senate Committee of Commerce, Science, and Transportation by Senators James Exon (D-NE) and Slade Gorton (R-WA) in 1995. The amendment that became the...

@bwDraco then it's not bleepingcomputer's problem anyway (and those John Does still are fine)
Consumer FTTP (e.g. GPON) uses WDD. DSL and HFC both use FDD.
Incidentally LTE, WCDMA and GSM also use FDD, though LTE has optional TDD it's only really used by the Chinese and for backhaul in the west
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq There's no practical difference between the two, though, apart from naming..?
> The term wavelength-division multiplexing is commonly applied to an optical carrier (which is typically described by its wavelength), whereas frequency-division multiplexing typically applies to a radio carrier (which is more often described by frequency). Since wavelength and frequency are tied together through a simple directly inverse relationship, in which the product of frequency and wavelength equals c (the propagation speed of light), the two terms actually describe the same concept.
Bleh.
Yeah. They're the same thing. But W is generally used in place of F on optical media. Except with RFoG.
Mainly cause optical transcievers and lasers tend to be specified in wavelength rather than frequency (because 1400nm is easier to write than 220000000Mhz or whatever)

I'd be surprised if Enigma Software is able to sustain the claims that "ESG's SpyHunter product has received top industry certifications" (page 4) and that "Defendent's conduct is willful and malicious" (page 10). The latter is very hard to prove, even in the presence of evidence of commercial motivation.
Most flagship releases are at RRP.
I already bought one.
Flagships tend to remain at RRP for about 3-4 months after release.
@Bob That was a wild guess. Apparently, quick math suggests its 250000000000000Hz
Heh, that works out to be 250 THz. Not bad for a wild guess.
Bob
Bob
Hm. That might be perfectly timed to fit within my 6 month period to reclaim any price reduction :P
Or I could wait 3-4 months to purchase.
Would also let me avoid any teething bugs and see some good reviews.

oh boy, you know you have a problem when windows support technicians are baffled.
**I am posting here for the moment, but I can create a proper question if you deem it appropriate**
summary of the situation:
- 2 days ago, updated from win7 to 10 succesfully. multiple reboots with no issues.
- yesterday, black screen after login
- I can lauch task manager and from there firefox and an elevated prompt, I cannot launch win update or file explorer (continues)
- looking around it seems that win10 does not like SSDs (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3025096)
- I have run sfc /scannow and the log mentions that opencl.dll does not match
now:
1) how is opencl.dll connected to a black screen?
2) the windows tech support suggested to reinstall win10 from an ISO, but this would prevent me from reverting to win7 if it fails to solve the issue
does any of you have any suggestions on what I might try?
Bob
Bob
@Federico Windows 'support technicians' are usually baffled :P
Bob
Bob
@Federico opencl is gpgpu
but that implies other graphics driver issues...
@Federico Windows 10 has no issues with SSDs over HDDs afaik
your link is for the technical preview, which was beta software
@Federico If you were concerned about 'reverting' to win7, which has a 30 day limit and is overwritten with a win10 major update anyway, then you should/would have taken a proper image backup first
you can try to manually update your graphics drivers
You can also try creating a new user. Apparently the win10 explorer occasionally stuffs up a user's profile. If the new user works, we can troubleshoot the old profile more from there.
about graphics, I have:
- disabled the driver of the CPU graphics (after the issue occourred)
- a NVidia graphics card
- updated the nvidia drivers after the win10 update, but afterwards I proceeded to play and reboot with no issues
about the 'reverting', I am concerned about it for these 30 days
how can I create a new user?
Bob
Bob
@Federico ah... no control panel, eh. is this Home or Pro?
@Federico try uninstalling the nvidia drivers and installing from scratch
09:33
should be pro, but right now I can't recall correctly
Bob
Bob
you can try the new user first if it's easier
@Federico launch lusrmgr.msc
you can go to the Users folder on the left and then right click in the middle pane and select New User
will do (I am not at the PC right now, but I am investigating all possible options)
Bob
Bob
lusrmgr requires Pro
if you're on Home try launching control userpasswords2
I dunno if that works on win10
maybe netplwiz or netplwiz.exe
I will try, else I download the nvidia drivers and perform a clean install of them
Bob
Bob
@Federico uninstall the old ones first, if you can, before installing the new
09:36
will be fun with only task manager and cmd :D
is there a way to launch the "programs and feature" control panel from there?
Bob
Bob
@Federico If you still can't get into a user control panel, you can use the net user /add command
or whatever the powershell equivalent is
it goes net use username password /add
where username and password are ... yea
Bob
Bob
@Federico You could try appwiz.cpl
but I dunno if that works on win10
it also might not work at all if Explorer is broken
the netplwiz is special cause it opens a dialog rather than a special explorer window
@Bob not all, from task manager I can browse around normally
Bob
Bob
other cpl widgets are within explorer
@Federico task manager isn't part of Explorer
09:39
@Bob not even the "browse" option for the "launch new task"?
Bob
Bob
@Federico that's a bit of a funny case :P
It's not hosted by the Explorer process, afaik
I think control panel is
ok, I see
Bob
Bob
they're part of the standard Windows shell widgets, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's hosted in Explorer
concerning the opencl.dll, this is what sfc tells me in the log:
Hashes for file member \SystemRoot\WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-r..xwddmdriver-wow64-c_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.0_none_3dae054b56911c22\opencl.dll do not match actual file [l:10]"opencl.dll" :
