It took me a few minutes to grok the context that was said in

loose ports breed like rabbits?
(And shit like this is why I hope there's no JMG SU equivilent of the Jon Skeet Facts page. Many memes of meta..)
ugh.
Just to note. I am tempted to purge the edits to that.
However there is no conspiracy to hide my occational lapses in memory ;p
@JourneymanGeek The link you posted yesterday says that would be an abuse of the purge functionality.
And I should report you to a CM.
But I'd rather eat.

@Bob my dac daw driver seems to crash windows randomly
I'm probably going to be looking at a new dac once I'm employed again
Prolly a tricked out odac2 with the built in headphone amp option
Hmm. @qasdfdsaq What exactly are you trying to tell us? Is that just some random spew?
@DavidPostill that his mind has been turned to jelly?
@JourneymanGeek I thought it was jelly already judging by his recent postings ;)
14:04
@jiggunjer Ramhound?
@jiggunjer Ooer. Link please ;)
@jiggunjer Weeellll.... he tends to comment a lot. More than he should IMO, sometimes. And he comes off as grumpier than he seems to on chat.
Please be polite to others I am more then familiar with the terminology. The one thing I cannot stand is people who are asking a question, suggesting that I don't understand something about their question, which might be honestly be case but only because of what they wrote. Instead of insulting me and suggesting I don't know what a "drive" is, just clarify the question, and use a more appropriate term. (physical disk, disk, etc ). — Ramhound 25 mins ago
sorry meant to copy link
@JourneymanGeek That reminds me. Don't eat jelly on my birthday ;)

Q: Why is the backup image size limited to 2088958MB?

jiggunjerI wanted to make a backup image of my drive with the windows 7 (x64) backup tool. I deselected any file-based backup options as I just wanted a full image (i.e. recovery + C partition). I got the following error: Then I tried using the free AOMEI onekey tool and it also said the drive was too ...

yeah
I think someone flagged a comment there. Also, I may need to nuke the comments if they're basically one long arguement ;p

@qasdfdsaq Cthulu should stop skipping leg day. And all the other days as well, except wing day

@JourneymanGeek Cross Fire X, it says
so, random snow update: we're close enough to snow time (no pun intended on "show time") that they know exactly when we're getting it with high confidence... snow will be upon us in my area in 6 hours
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek probably displays firmware diag codes
@allquixotic is that enough time for you to get home?
@Bob only seen em on newer boards
and ... I think asrock does that
14:34
@Bob Time isn't a real concern. The snow itself isn't even really a concern. My parking lot is a salt mine. The road I leave work on is a service road to a salt mine, so dozens of snow plows constantly come down that road to fill up on salt. Then the highway gets plowed hourly.
The snow and/or ice on the ground doesn't bother me at all. It's not going to have a chance to accumulate to problematic depth on any roads I'm driving.
Wait
I'm confused. Why is it ATI crossfire X...
The problem is the potential for white-out conditions.
White-out means visibility tends toward 0 m.
@allquixotic be careful!

Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Watch out for black ice? Though I suppose that comes later.
@allquixotic So you'll be leaving after the snow starts? :S
@Bob Much later, yes. Sunday at the earliest, probably even later in the week
@Bob Yes. I anticipate the initial 1-2 hours of snow won't be very heavy. That's just how storms work. The heaviest part is in the middle.
I can drive fine in light, moderate or even heavy snowfall conditions
White-out is a whole different story
Bob
Bob
14:37
Starts in 6 hours... you said 3:30... so you'll be leaving around snow start time.
You follow someone thinking they're going the right way, and you both end up crashing into a bridge or something

attempting to shovel feet of snow at a time is a good way to break your back, especially as an out-of-shape, obese 30 year old
so I'm going to shovel it every few inches
just a quick walk and shovel, very little effort
@Bob naw, that's for the wild animals to do.
you wait until it's heavy and you can end up in the hospital in pain from pulling back muscles
@allquixotic heh. I hit the point where I decided I needed to loose weight.
I'm going for short, sensible early morning run now.
@JourneymanGeek :D
I hate to bring up this topic, but, what tool can I use to make creating an HTML email less of a pain?
The mail just has to look the same on all clients ;P
A drill?
@OliverSalzburg do you want a pony with that?
14:42
@JourneymanGeek Last time I used Notepad++ and lots of <table>
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Flamethrower? :P
@OliverSalzburg which wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm tempted to suggest compozer. No idea if its still around, or if they changed its name again
Bob
Bob
(yes, I know why that wouldn't really work. heat capacity. and police.)
@Bob apparently it causes ice....
though I heard of people using hot air blowers... or large jet engines...
@JourneymanGeek Well, it works. Even with the shitty Word-based HTML render in Outlook
Bob
Bob
14:44
@OliverSalzburg aka bane of my existence
@Bob You regularly deal with that?
@DavidPostill Happy Birthday!!
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg nah, not regularly. was mostly a joke. (just like outlook)
@JourneymanGeek there's actually a snow blower on rails in Boston designed to clear train tracks of snow... and it uses an old J52 fighter engine from the Korean war to both propel itself and blow snow
@OliverSalzburg I don't think the same is possible. Different email clients will display html differently and they don't all support the same set of css commands.
Bob
Bob
14:45
did have to set up identical signatures (with different names/titles) for an office once, though. that was painful enough.
@allquixotic that's what I was thinking of.
The client "just wants their CI in the email" :P
@RahulBasu Thanks!
I seem to remember it as a mig engine for some reason...
@DavidPostill Yeah, I know. I just wonder if there's something that allows you to use the most common subset or something like that
14:46
we don't have any of that heavy duty equipment in Maryland because we typically get less snow than the northeast
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg easy solution is to have an email that kinda works and a link up the top to a proper webpage
they also have, up in NYC and Boston, big trucks that use energy to physically melt the snow and make water, then they dump the water in the sewer
@Bob Yeah, you gotta have that anyway, but people won't expect that with this kind of mail. It's one of those regular office event invitation emails, not a newsletter
So we kinda want to stay within the context of the email client
We're using plain text right now, so there's lots to improve ;D
@OliverSalzburg Use mailchimp ;)
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg The simple answer is to not bother with too much fancy layout-ing.
14:51
@DavidPostill That's what we did the last time we sent a newsletter. But they really aren't doing anything special and their templates weren't so special either
@OliverSalzburg Or design your invitation as a PDF and send that.
@Bob Yeah, you're probably right :\
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill That's a great way to filter out all security-conscious users from your office events! :P
@Bob Sledjacking!
14:52
I really envy that cat with the donut cushion :(
Looks comfy
@Bob Then send a bleeding card in the post!
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill What? I can't hear you over the shredder :D
@OliverSalzburg You can design your own templates ...
lol
@DavidPostill That's what we ended up doing
Bob
Bob
But, yea, there really is no easy way out for consistent email.
14:55
And this is an email sent from our own platform, MailChimp is really not a service that would do us any good
@OliverSalzburg what if they use pine or mutt? ;p
@JourneymanGeek Then we're fucked
But they probably won't, because our application is very tailored towards office use
Most clients use Outlook, Notes or something similar
:(
Bob
Bob
No love for Thunderbird? :(
@OliverSalzburg That's why I suggested a pdf attachment. Can be read in any mail client ...
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg The German machinery exports...? :P
15:00
@DavidPostill A "Please see the attached PDF document to see event details" takes people out of the context of the email client and raises spam flags
Bob
Bob
Heh. PDF attachments (any attachments, really) are firmly in my do-not-open-unless-expected bin.
@OliverSalzburg <shrug> You can't please everybody
The "events" I'm talking about here are not like "Big Summer Party 2016", but more like "Important Meeting with Client XY in Room 8"
The mail should have some branding though to make it "look legit" :P
So it either has to have our CI or that of the client
So use a png for the branding and plain text for the important stuff.
Bob
Bob
That's especially fun when Outlook decides not to render the PNG as you'd expect :D
15:09
@Bob <shrug> You can't please everybody ;)
LOL. Now I remember why I mostly use plain text emails ;)
I've used Forte Agent for many years and MailChimp for the occasional newsletter.

Welp.
"PC Game Supply". Supposedly a reputable company. God forbid you ever trip their fraud detection bullshit, though, because there's absolutely no way they'll ever be able to help you get through.
What a waste of time.
16:42
@Bob PDFs? Really?
16:53
Ooh @JourneymanGeek is back from exile!
@ThatBrazilianGuy PDFs are able to embed a lot of objects and I wouldn't be surprised if someone managed to embed something nasty in the PDF 3d stuff for example. Interchangeable file formats are getting too smart for their own good. Unless I know the source they're on my "instant delete" list too.
11
Q: Can a PDF file contain a virus?

BegueradjCould a PDF file contain any type of malware?

Considering you can embed malicious code in Word documents, yeah.
PDFs are basically just a markdown document with code to be executed by the printer.
The spec is very complicated and loose. One of my friends had to write a PDF writer/reader for a co-op once.
Similar idea to postscript, really
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards PDFs are far more complex then Markdown
Far more complex/precise than HTML+CSS too, ignoring animations.
It's also a very common infection vector. Lots of ACE vulns in readers over the years.
17:27
Please be advised that I will likely be offline for most of tomorrow due to an incoming blizzard. Even if we do not lose power, I likely cannot do my usual moderation work as I will be on my tablet to conserve power.
@Bob right, looked it up, and you're right
But I left my statement since it's on the right track anyway :P
17:44

Hi! Off to lunch!
18:10
18:22
I love this planet 9 thing.
I will forever lovingly refer to it as Planet X, though. :)
IX
(Even though I was all for the reclassification of Pluto)
Based on the criteria that demoted Pluto, I think this Planet 9 would need to be classified as a dwarf planet.
...if it exists.
Not at all
Because from what we can tell, it fulfills the criteria. It's massive, somewhere between Earth and Neptune, too.
Part of the criteria is that its orbit has to be mostly round. They're saying if it exists, it has an extremely elliptical orbit.
No, outside Neptune.
Outside the Oort Cloud.
18:24
No, I'm talking about how big it is
It's bigger than Earth
Ah, yeah.
Its size isn't the only part of the criteria, though.
Three parts. One is its size.
Early theories are that it got flung out to the outer solar system in its early days
Two is that it has to clear its neighborhood.
Three is that its orbit has to be mostly round, not elliptical.
They're saying its orbit would be extremely elliptical.
18:25
Thing is, there's also the concept of rogue planets, which are still planets despite not orbiting anything
It doesn't qualify based on the criteria they set for Pluto.
So it wouldn't be a conventional planet, but a planet nonetheless.
May be a new category
Yeah, I could agree with that.
Too massive to qualify as a dwarf planet, I think
...if it exists.
18:25
Right
But yeah, Planet X, because this is a beautiful convergence of conspiracy theory and science that almost never happens :)
Well if it doesn't exist then there's something doing something weird out there that we probably don't want to know about.
Haha, no, we definitely want to know about it!
It could have been something that passed by the Oort cloud close enough to push objects.
Alternatively, we could hope that this is evidence of a Mass Relay, and find out that Mass Effect was right!
But then we'd have to hope that Reapers aren't a thing, lol
I remember someone here pointing me to this case, I think it was @CanadianLuke....
18:48
@Mokubai <Insert fat mom joke that references gravity and outer planets>
19:33
@qasdfdsaq Well, it's big and out there so.....

1 hour later…

Designing and building a scramjet engine is so much easier in KSP than in RL.
21:14
Then build it in KSP and port it to real life.
