Haha.
@JourneymanGeek and 50% of the dog videos are "Ash eating XYZ"
lol
blames the fact that its VERY hard to play with a dog, and video him at the same time
00:18
Ohai.
How are you, @JourneymanGeek?
Does anyone know why sometimes explorer.exe locks down files?
Eg, you can delete the file until you kill explorer or restart
@SimonSheehan: maybe something is using it?
00:31
@SimonSheehan: Could it be a permissions issue, or some type of background-thing?
but you don't know what it is, or it didn't unlock it?
Well, no other process is using the file, but it locked down

Q: Question of the Week #35

nhinkleNow we're into week 35 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any question that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity's sake. We are...

waits exactly one minute
I'm making a command-line thing that'll essentially be a stream of new Super User questions
fudge.
I've had such thing already, Growl like.
Dunno the exact name but searching for Growl on StackApps should do...
@TomWijsman: I'd prefer mine to be this way, without Growl.
@TomWijsman: Besides, I need something to do xD
Growl is optional, @Wuffers.
@TomWijsman: Well, I'll just work with this. It's something that's keeping me from being bored!
01:15
It just displays questions in command-line form, or you can get them to appear in Growl.
Yeah, good luck. :)
I've actually nearly got it :P
I've got it to get the questions via the API, I just need it to check for new ones every minute, which should be easy too.
I just get the questions, wait a minute, get them again, get the difference in that, and boom.
Just remember the id of the latest question. :)
:P
shugs, does things his own, albeit inefficient way
I still have that "download all questions from a site" script laying around doing nothing...
Why the name change @wuffermarkmrman?
01:17
@nhinkle: Just something I made up xD
Personal meme? :)
Not really? XD
Testing this is such a pain XD
I have it waiting one minute before getting new data.
Wait a minute, find out it doesn't work, fix, wait a minute, repeat.
Whoop! It works :D
Or not...
There...
waits another minute
I sure hope this thing isn't just getting stuck.
seems like it is
01:38
It's taken me 6 years to figure out what in God's name this key is
XD
Took me a while, too.
Literally, 6 years
Until I googled "What in gods name is this weird mac key"
01:52
lol
the t shirt key?
wait.
you googled those exact words?
Yes
now when i do it, it doesnt work..
weird...
@JourneymanGeek either way, one weird key :p
02:18
For such a good site... Lego isn't doing well :( area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/10919/lego

I hate clearing up
wonders why the hell we have two boxes of ADSL splitters
Clearing up?
o.o
ya
trying to throw out anything useless
ahh okay
I've got a "crap drawer" for that
lets see
Thompson ST536 thats been set for use with our local IPTV service...
do we need it? no
are we going to throw it out, no
02:28
Lol
...
I explained very carefully to mom how totally useless ADSL filters are, and that i was going to throw them out....
"Leave it, i'll sell it in india"
god, the woman seems to have taken leave of her wits

2 hours later…
04:47
@JourneymanGeek hey, if she can make money, then let her LOL
@JourneymanGeek what are they? internet something?
05:00
ADSL filters are those glorified splitters
with a high and low pass filter so you can use ADSL and a phone at once

The next time you’re taking a look at our Frequently Asked Questions list, you may notice some small changes:

A few months ago, we had some discussion on meta about whether home networking questions were within the scope of Super User. The community proposed via Super User Meta that we update the FAQ to more directly represent that home networking questions are allowed on Super User, and always have been – it just hadn’t been specifically mentioned in the FAQ.

In the course of this discussion, it was also agreed that we should include a statement to the effect of question …

I scare myself sometimes
I found out the correct linux kernel module/ethernet adaptor by random googling of a processor model, and sheer luck, and the guy who asked has better linux skills than i do ;p

Last week, there was a lot of hubbub on Meta Stack Overflow about a system message that ran on Stack Overflow. The system message read:

SOPA is a dangerous law. It breaks the Internet and threatens sites like Stack Overflow. Protect the Internet!

For the intents and purposes of this post, let’s bypass the controversy surrounding whether or not this is an appropriate use of system messages and simply focus on the important parts: why SOPA and PROTECT IP are bad news for Stack Exchange, the United States, the Internet, and the world. …

Here we go again.
I don't believe it.
I think I'll suggest on Meta.Apple.SE that Mac OS X-related questions be migrated to SuperUser.
Let's hear some of their arguments why this is a completely braindead idea.
17:47
@DanielBeck What question are you reffering to?
18:13
@soandos Newest Apple-related on Meta.
18:40
@DanielBeck Perhaps that was a tad harsh
19:32
hey @BloodPhilia
20:02
Hello everyone
took some neat photos today in class with a DSLR camera..
Geeky pictures, of course
@SimonSheehan If you are looking for feedback, I can't really tell what you are focusing on in most pictures.
20:17
@TomWijsman Not looking for feedback, just sharing :P
I've never used one of these fancy camera's and thought it was cool!
<3 it crowd
Is it just me, or did the Chat link at the top of SU.com disappear?
not just you
Ok. I wonder why...
@iglvzx it has been that way for a while
At least an hour I think
21:11
(LOL. Just noticed the little snowman)
It seems to be rolling out throughout the SE sites. Some still have the Chat link
Its somewhat random, sometimes its there, sometimes it links to the blog
@JourneymanGeek ????
why?
donno
unrelatedly meta.superuser.com/posts/3811/revisions i'm slightly amused that someone corrected my lolspeak
There is no mention of this change in Meta.SO. Maybe I should ask about it
/me sighs
21:15
@iglvzx please do
trying to spring clean. Its a little daunting
@JourneymanGeek it is not even winter yet...
@soandos Aha! It is not a bug. But a feature:
12
A: Eeeek! Where did the chat top navigation link go?

ScroogeIt has been replaced for 24 hours by the blog link. When the blog is no longer "new" it will return.

Its school holidays
so trying to get things no one bothers with done
21:18
@soandos However, it is a not a good feature in my opinion.
@iglvzx agreed
I'm writing up a feature request on Meta.SO right now. We'll see what the community thinks
yay
i found a obsolete, annoying old bit of irreplacable software i need to do a full nuke and pave on one of my systems
system requirements, 486 dx2, min 8 mb ram....
21:36
haha
Its annoying since it, for some reason, tries to install fonts each time its run, and needs to be run as admin as a result
which totally messes up me trying to run everything as LUA
and its not really worth virtualising either
Applying to jobs again..

Q: Don't replace the Chat link with the New Blog link in the header; truncate (...) long usernames

iglvzxThe reasoning for not including both the Chat and Blog links in the #hlinks DIV is a bit silly. @kyle people with long names would wrap – Jeff Atwood♦ Aug 10 at 1:46 http://meta.stackoverflow.com/a/101470/172108 If the problem is long usernames, why don't we truncate them temporarily, ...

22:05
Oy!
Noy?
I never arrive here on time!
@BloodPhilia Haha
22:54
'Evening.
brilliant :D
Announcing the visit of Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer!
Haha, nice @studiohack
@Wuffers who said that was me? ;)
I have no clue why. But iTunes is making me restore my iPod...
It's working perfectly fine.
23:38
@studiohack That is nice. Goes well with our snowman notifications
@iglvzx check out the first page of MSO's users
@studiohack: Don't you think the website, and the bio gives it away? XD
@Wuffers lol, I was kidding
Oh man. Snowmen.
I'll give @Wuffers some snowballs. here goes
@Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers @Wuffers !
23:40
@studiohack Which page exactly? meta.stackoverflow.com/users
@studiohack: It only showed up as one notification :P
notice the names of the first couple of users
many of the mods have changed their names. this guy is Robert Harvey, a SO/MSO mod
@Wuffers
there. two more @Wuffers
@Wuffers
@studiohack Ah. I see. It would be funny if all our avatars became elves or something on Dec 25. Similar to the Unicorn Apr 1st joke.
Restoring my iPod from last night's iCloud backup.
Thank goodness for that.
23:44
@Wuffers Close call!
@iglvzx mhm
I just hope this doesn't mean there's something wrong with the iPod itself...
Perfect.
downloads all his apps again
Woah
magic.
It started downloading all the apps I had on there when it backed up :D
@Wuffers iOS 5.0 and iCloud have definitely improved the 'restore from backup' experience.
@iglvzx: They certainly have! All my apps are in their right folders and everything :D
