Oh I missed a load of messages while I was pooping. Oops.
@DavidPostill Ops I have written an answer to "I have to say your community stinks"... but it's just deleted... :(
@qasdfdsaq Probably inspired by it
It also looks suspeciously like a TAR 21
Oh I used to own noobs all the time with a TAR-21
Never handled one IRL though.
@Hastur Hmm. "This question was marked as spam or offensive and is therefore not shown"
The Godwin probably didn't help.
!!wkiki godwin
@DavidPostill That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: wiki
Godwin is an Anglo-Saxon name. It may refer to: == People == Arts and entertainment Catherine Grace Godwin (1798–1845), Scottish poet Edward William Godwin (1833–1886), English architect Fay Godwin (1931–2005), British photographer Frank Godwin (1889–1959), American illustrator, creator of Connie comic strip Frank Godwin (film producer) (1917–2012), English film producer Gail Godwin (born 1937), American novelist and short story writer George Godwin, architectural journalist George Stanley Godwin, author Jeff Godwin, American fundamentalist, former rock musician Joscelyn Godwin (born 1945), English...
14:13
That's probably the biggest gun I've personally fired
!!wiki Godwin's Law
Godwin's law (or Godwin's rule of Nazi analogies) is an Internet adage asserting that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1"—that is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism. Promulgated by American attorney and author Mike Godwin in 1990, Godwin's Law originally referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions. It is now applied to any threaded online discussion, such as Internet forums, chat rooms, and blog...
And that's probably the smallest.
@qasdfdsaq @JourneymanGeek Just how many goddamn snipers are present in this chat room?

Billy C.Sounds like you've really screwed the pooch now. You cannot make random decisions when doing electrical work. By shorting Line to ground, and doing that repeatedly, you probably caused fire damage to the cabling in your walls between the switches. Now you get to rip down all of the drywall be...

and this is why i will never do electrical work on my own house

15:40
@ArtOfCode Which part of "Is that a joke" "No" made you think it was supposed to be funny?
Don't start insulting people.
@ArtOfCode So posting a joke about image about lesbians is OK but replying objectively to it is ground for suspension. Care to explain the "reason" behind that?
For the record, I didn't ban you.
Someone did.
Yes. Someone wasn't me. I came over here in response to a flag, because your message was quite possibly offensive. It was my intention to delete the message and move on; someone suspended you before I got to it.
15:42
I pointed out a fact from a psychology study. Maybe not in exact 100% verbatim, but nonetheless, not meant to be funny.. You obviously mistook it for a joke, other people clearly find facts offensive :-/
I'd hardly call that a fact. You made an assumption about a group's sexuality based on their profession. That's not OK.
I call it a fact, because it's based on information from a scientific study about gender representation in STEM fields.
But quoting that's not OK, but joking about it and calling it funny is OK? Yeah that's the wrong way round methinks.
More to the point, even if it was a fact, it was stated in a way that didn't attempt to make that obvious, nor did it attempt to justify why it was there.
@qasdfdsaq Quoting that would have been fine; it's a quote from a source. You didn't quote. Nor is joking about it funny.
Nobody asked... plus it was in reply to this:
1 hour ago, by Dave
@RahulBasu I personally like the last image in that comic, since there's not many female developers which makes it 2x funny
Which was in turn a reply to this:
1 hour ago, by Rahul Basu
Actually, 'RSS&M' is kinda catchy.
@qasdfdsaq that is, in fact, a fact.
15:46
Please don't tell me XKCD's are grounds for termination...
Strangely enough, I do read context in chatrooms before taking any actions, let alone suspensions. Neither of those previous messages was worth acting on; yours was.
I dunno, am I suppose to qualify everything I say in here, even in response to a joke, with a link to the source now?
@RahulBasu they're not.
@qasdfdsaq So someone makes an XKCD reference. Someone states a fact. You reply to that fact with saying "female developers are lesbians". Tell me you wouldn't come in from another chatroom, look at that, especially if you're a female developer, and find it offensive.
So again making a joke about lesbians and female developers is OK, but me saying "That's basically true" is "actionable".
@ArtOfCode That's NOT what I said.
@qasdfdsaq Paraphrased, that's exactly what you said.
Anonymous
15:48
@ArtOfCode probably nothing of my business but it takes some really conservative worldview to be offended by being called a "lesbian"
This is why I don't do suspensions lightly. They cause far too much butthurt and argument.
So it's OK for you to paraphrase what I said but when what I said was basically paraphrasing a) the comic and b) an actual scientific study, it's "actioable"
Anonymous
Maybe annoyed but not offended/insulted/etc.
Yeah I still don't see the logic.
@qasdfdsaq It's part of my explanation to you. If someone finds that offensive, I'll gladly delete my message.
15:50
@PatoSáinz I'm neither annoyed or offended personally.
@PatoSáinz That's not the point. What do you do for a living?
Anonymous
@ArtOfCode for now, I'm a sysadmin. Why?
@PatoSáinz So that's like me coming along in response to an XKCD on sysadmins, and saying "sysadmins are gay". It's not the being called gay that's offensive, it's the assumption about an entire group based on a totally unrelated fact.
I'm a sysadmin who self identifies as lesbian, many of the developers, support, managers, and designers I work with in I.T. are also lesbians. None of us find it offensive to joke about the preponderance of lesbians around here.
Anonymous
Hmm well I can understand your point.
Anonymous
15:52
Still, this whole debacle is probably none of my business.
@qasdfdsaq That's fair enough. But that's your opinion. To an objective observer, you're making an assumption about a group based on an entirely unrelated fact - see my last message.
It's just like when people call me racist when commenting on my own race. Some people just actively want to be offended by everything.
Look, this argument won't go anywhere because we're both convinced we're right and only one of us is. What's done is done; I can't unsuspend you now.
Or maybe I just never get offended by any gender related issues because so many of my friends are gay, queer, lesbian, transgender, or just plain don't know.
The way I see it, let's just stop making assumptions and get over with it. If someone can get offended, DON'T SAY IT

I'm starting to feel guilty for this argument now...

I'm going to upgrade my gaming PC's disks from 2x500MB hybrid HDDs in raid0 to a 128GB SSD + 1 TB HDD for data storage.
A moped (/ˈmoʊpɛd/ MOH-ped) is a small motorcycle, generally having a less stringent licensing requirement than motorcycles, or automobiles, because mopeds typically travel about the same speed as bicycles on public roadways. Strictly speaking, mopeds are driven by both an engine and by bicycle pedals, but in common usage and in many jurisdictions the term moped is used for similar vehicles including a scooter. Mopeds occasionally resemble powered bicycles, more commonly called a motorized bicycle. Some mopeds are of a step-through type design, while others are step-over designs, having a motorcycle...

@qasdfdsaq That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
Too bad
I upgraded the CPU and motherboard recently. I could've switched it from AMD to Intel but I wanted the transition to be as smooth as possible and switching the entire platform out from under the Windows installation seemed like a risky proposition.
17:03
@BenRichards I did a while back, it wasn't as straightforward as a same-vendor switch but wasn't too hard either
Sticking with AMD, even sticking with MSI for the mobo mfgr, things went as smooth as butter. Just had to call Microsoft to revalidate Windows.
@qasdfdsaq I know it isn't impossible. But I wanted as few things to have to deal with as possible.
Ell
Ell
meh balls to this. I'll wait a week and install everything from scratch instead
I started getting BSODs and my cloud sync clients started forgetting credentials and settings and stuff. Since they're still the same drives I had when I built the thing a few years ago, plus being in RAID0 anyway, I figured I might as well just move to a better drive setup.
Wanted an SSD anyway. I like that boot speed.
And I can game pretty well on it. The graphics card needs upgrading next at some point, but it still works just fine.
I can max out most games and get 40fps pretty easily
Or more
I have yet to really benchmark this, but I suspect that the AMD FX processor will help me out a lot anyway since I also do music production and that hopefully makes a lot of use of multicore floating-point processing.
40fps? Peasant
I know!
But it's better than what I was getting before. Things were almost unplayable.
My gaming laptop was trumping my gaming desktop. Now things are back how they should be.
17:09
@allquixotic How do you set up a chatbot? Just Curious?
It actually seems to cap at 40fps in a few games. Not sure why that's so special. I suspect I'm hitting the upper limits of the graphics card
Or CPU
Hitting the limits of the graphics card wouldn't cap
Who knows.
I can try throttling the CPU or overclocking it and seeing what changes
The graphics card is a Radeon HD 7970 3GB/1GHz
So it's capable, but a couple years old
I had a Radeon 5870 and that could do more than 40fps...
Specifically, I'm getting 40fps with The Witcher III at max settings (even with the NVidia stuff all the way up) as well as GTAV with things turned up as far as I can without blowing over the GPU memory limit.
Oh, the card can do more than that on other games
It just is recent games like those are capping at 40fps in gameplay for some reason
It very well could be the CPU
GTA V is heavily CPU limited.
@allquixotic So, I can just make one?
I can only get 108fps, and I've got the fastest CPU you can buy.
Maybe The Witcher III is as well?
like, no stackexchange rules or anything
17:14
Never tried Witcher myself
My gaming laptop has an i7-somethingsomething and NVidia GTX 860M
I was actually surprised that my all-AMD desktop could handle The Witcher III better with even the NVidia gameworks stuff turned up all the way than the Intel-NVidia laptop.
Even if the laptop has a weaker GPU
That's because the 860M is feeble.
Then again I have an 840M which is more feeble
All hail feeble mobile GPUs!
I can run Rollercoaster Tycoon at 3000fps though
I wanted something that was capable but it didn't have to be a super powerhouse. Also, I didn't want to be carrying a mini aircraft carrier in my backpack
Hehe
I also didn't want to spend $3k on a laptop
Oh crap I almost missed lunch
17:18
I was about to, then I realised I didn't really need a powerful gaming laptop
Turns out when I'm on holiday I spend more time holidaying, than playing computer games
I resolved to get a gaming laptop after I brought my desktop to PAX East 2013 for BYOPC. Which was great and all but a huge hassle to bring everything into the BYOPC area. I had to get help from one of my friends if I only wanted to do a single trip
Though it was still cool showing off my PC to other people there and I do enjoy BYOPC since it gives you a place to retreat to and relax while still being within a stone's throw of the main floor

Anyone remember the old PokéMon Games for Gameboy?
Yes.
I think that Red was the only one I ever played.
@BenRichards Heh.
I have an uber-large PC case that would be even harder to cart around
This one is pretty large, you can tell. That's a 24" screen btw
17:34
But my flatmate has a mini-ITX box for his gaming PC. He planned on taking it to work and back as a laptop... that didn't happen. But it'd be still quite easy to take to gaming events
It's also super heavy. Like 70lbs without being filled IIRC
There's a new game out, at least for Android, called Pocket Mortys. Played very similarly to the old Pokemon games, but with many Ricks and many Morty's (assuming you watch the show Rick and Morty)
Mine wouldn't be too bad, if it weren't for the full custom-loop water cooling system and dual 240/280mm radiators...
My last machine had 8 hard drives in it, which made it pretty heavy >_>
But the new one just runs 2-3 SSDs, and the rest on my network server. Completely diskless on everything but my server now
Ah, my bad. It's probably 70lbs with everything in it. It's 30lbs empty.
